great video my is like the one on the right. it is used in the summer and then in the winter I have to use a humidifier because we burn wood and that dries the house out. thanks for the video
Nice informative video. I've always wondered why the dehumidifier pumps out warm air as opposed to an air conditioner which pumps out cold air, even though both use a similar system with a refrigerant gas running through coils.
I rented one from Home Depot and have it under my house right now running with the hose going out of my crawl space. It's been pumping out water for the last 3 days like a champ, I'm very happy so far.
That's essentially what an air conditioner does, although its purpose is, of course, to cool a room instead of remove humidity. Some A/C units do have a dedicated dehumidifier mode, though, which directs the heat outside and has the added benefit of not needing to be emptied since the water is expelled outside as well.
Well, this video just answered a question that I haven't thought about for around 25 years. Our elementary school computer labs had two dehumidifiers like the brown unit on the right. I wondered what those things were, but it's easy to get distracted and forget to ask things when you're five years old and in a computer lab.
I have that old Kenmore dehumidifier. I got it at the dump, 11 years ago. It has worked in a 50 degree damp room. I think it's time to check for dust, don't you. I want a second one just like it. Thank you for the video.
So the aqua dry is by Kenmore? I'm looking at buying one locally listed. Clearly it's vintage but most older things run better and longer than the newer stuff. We've burned out a few newer dehumidifiers. Maybe I will buy that older model. Is yours still going?

I have an old Berns Air King DH 17 Dehumidifier and it worked good last year after I put a ball bearing in the fan motor to replace the bronze bushing that seized up about twice and year and had to be lubricated. But, now the coils are freezing up even when I take it out in 90 degree weather outside It has a relay and another round component on the side of the compressor but I don't know if they are both good. Someone tole me that this type of unit has to cycle the compressor off and on to keep the coils from freezing because it has no sensor in the air flow. Do you have any idea of what could be wrong with it?
Hope you guys can help me with my dehumidifier problem. The compressor comes on and off but is only blowing cold air. I took the unit apart and cleaned it , fan works well. It will draw a little water but will never output warm air . I live in a colder climate, if that helps helps. I hope you can help me and I will order parts if needed from you. Thanks for your time.
harry andrews The capillary tube is a small tube in the sealed refrigerant system and restricts refrigerant flow. I thought Relative Humidity % #'s fixed & negatively correlated to temperature, based on this video, it says after the room air's water's squeezed out of it in the Dehumidifier, it's heated and sent back out and what happens? I'm confused.
The fan cools the pressurized (thus heated) gas; when the pressure is released, the gas cools. The idea is to obtain a very cool surface that will condense the water, which removes it from the air. Same as a glass of ice water that condenses water on the outside. The trick is to maintain the cold surface when warmer air is being passed over it. Hence, the air-conditioner-type setup.
The RH is a setpoint. The biggy is the condenser coil that cools the air below its dew point. As a unitary device, the air is reheated when it goes through the evaporator coil; the room will get warmer. The moisture in the air is removed by condensation, not "squeasing" and therefore reduces the water vapor of the air.
My dehumidifier has a small compartment above the water reservoir - What is it for? I was wondering if it was to put vinegar or oil to give a better smell in the room?

That would be an air conditioner. That has the evaporator inside the room and the condenser outside the room, so it gets cold air without getting reheated by the condenser.
I'm looking for one that you can set it and forget it. I want easy. I want it on all the time, especially the cold months. I don't want to be going home at lunch hour just to drain the bucket or else I'll have a flood in my bedroom. I guess I will spend five thousand dollars to put a drain in the middle of my bedroom. Humidity is usually low in cold temperatures, why would it be needed in winter? If you don't want to have to constantly be dumping out the water, you can attach a hose to it and have it drain into a sink, if you can have it sitting high enough. When I had to use one sitting in a position too low to drain, I used a small water pump controlled by an electronic level sensor to turn it on when the bucket got full, so it automatically emptied out the high drain.
If you keep the coils clean, you can drink the bucket water or water your plants with it. Liquid gold. Run one outside and get Free purified water from mother earth. Have it run off solar panels and you end up with Off Grid water as well.
