Maybe that is because some of us are still wishing for the Versus XIII version. 😉 I like the original so much that I have downloaded what trailers I could.
The thing I love is that people moan no matter what when the versus trailer came out everyone compared him to sasuke and basically called him a edgy emo.. so they changed him and now people complain that he's not dark enough or as edgy. make your mind up/
I think over time things have changed, back then people didn't like Squall because he was too edgy or whatever, and they didn't like the OG Noctis either, but now, those types of characters are more well received, so the reverse is happening. Or at least that's my theory.
@sobekflakmonkey I like your theory. It's been 10 years. That is a LONG time, and things (as well as the views of those said things) change, sometimes dramatically so. Noctis isn't bad at all. I don't want him to be TOO emo that it becomes his defining trait because I would like nuance in his character, but he's just the right balance. It's like with Lightning (favorite FF protagonist). She wasn't really emo, but had enough nuance to balance her out to make her more human and relatable.
I loved the initial concept! The new version is shit! From wanting the game really badly I changed to definitely not gonna buy it.

Except VS Noctis is far cry from Sasuke, aside from the looks. Noctis was never an edgy teen set on revenge for anyone nor he curses the world for his miseries. Noctis just simply want to protect his kingdom like a true king does. Unlike XV version who constantly whine like a bitch.

gummibears27 Development set backs, maybe they thought it didn't fit the FF team, maybe higher ups didn't agree with it. There are a number of possibilities. With big games like FF they usually stay away from anything too edgy so they can please everyone.

I liked the direction they were going with FFvsXIII. You were basically playing as "the other side" of most FF games. You were with the kingdom, the empire, the guys who dressed in dark colours, lived in omnious buildings and had to fight against the Warriors of Light (i.e., the character classes). It was a nice, philosophical and cozily dark way, with plenty of potential for tragedy, of saying "You know when you're 'The Good Guys' and kill a dozen or so of these guys, most of them without a second thought? Well, we're going to make you think about how 'The Bad Guys' also fight for what they think is right, also have friends and loved ones and how 'Bad' you might come across to them in most FF titles."

vs13 felt like an epic urban fantasy tragedy. Your main character is a king who's at most trying to defend his dwindling country so has to basically murder invaders without a second thought. It was quite pragmatic and things have to be done out of duty. The people you're fighting too is just doing it for well resources and somewhat ala Game of Thrones. It feels like everyone is in a very gray area and will not end well no matter what happens.
15 feels like a boy band on a road trip. There is a disappointing drop in grandeur and seriousness.
Oh well. Can't do anything about it now. Glad they made the changes. I prefer a light air to escape the bullshit going on the world right now. If I wanted to experience depressing, dark things I'd go to the news.
To be fair, this is a much better alternative than real life news. 2016 wasnt nice at all.
gotta admit, I do love Noctis's outfit from the very first Trailer for Versus XIII. Hope we get something like it in the game.

Eric Vu It might be the fact that the old 2006 outfit looks a little more regal with the cape in the back, and the extended collar. Whereas, the new outfit is more understated and modern looking. Not to mention, a little less intrusive.

imagine being a fan of final fantasy since u'r 10yrs old in 2006, its like, i've been waiting since i was 10, now im 20yrs old and had graduated from high school and is currently in second yr college and its finally here!
But since the game is mediocre, your kid's dream are crushed and you have to turn the page, forever.

FF Versus 13 may be based on the 'Omen' concept of FF15, where Noctis is 'alone' against the world.
FF15 skews away from the 'Omen' into a 'Hope' concept, where a younger Noctis struggles against the fate of the Omen.
FF Versus 13 has the 'anti-hero' possibly fight and end up killing the 'heroine'.
FF15 instead tries to bind them together as fated couples.

Have you played the game? I'm genuinely asking because, in the more recent trailer (the one where he follows the dog around), you can see a corrupted Noctis killing her. I know it's a dream but maybe that "Omen" concept you speak of is still present?
But I do agree that the more 1vAll concept we see in the very first trailer seems much cooler, but I'm still hyped.
If you think about it, Omen actually resumes you the whole game... it begins with the roadtrip...- 1ºpart og the game-to change to doom tale.. - 2º part of the game - details as the boat alissia but all destroyed, not having magic weponns at some point, the assaut to the army complex, the train and all what happends there... the elevator (which is the end of a fight in the second part of the game).. well, i see so many that it will take me a while to described. but please think that if noctis is light (actualy his name can be translate as ligh in the sky night somewhat) , ardyn is darkness (ardyn is a twister version of "arder"--> to burn, so could it be burning the sky light somewhat)
So, IN OMEN what you see is the travel which Noctis has to make though the game + Ardyn representing darkess and killing Luna (Alissia chapter)

Due to cut content. The Omen trailer is null and void. The game cannot have that setting in the current story. Has there is nothing that can create or change Noctis into that demonic version.
There is a leaked story regarding the original plot for 15 and 13 Versus. Regarding if that leaked story is true or false...Well lets just say its content fits the Omen trailer better than the game itself.

The opening to XV was one of my favorite intros in a long time.
I'll say this in my opinion, I think versus would have a good story because it's dark and it's like a Romeo and Juliet story between noctis and Stella, and then they changed it to 15, took out Stella and replace it with Luna and storyline is about reclaiming your throne, lighthearted. I'll miss Stella tbh but regardless I'll buy the game because I been waiting for 10 years! 🙂😊
I was actually thinking the same thing. I liked that Stella and Noctis had the same powers. In some ways it was like what if Tidus and Yuna had same powers. Also Stella was awesome.
Cept the original one was also about reclaiming your throne (if you watch the trailers of when they were invaded and looking at the picture of Etro).
True but I liked that Stella was an anti-hero/villain who had Noctis's powers. And I think Noctis story was interesting in the FFXIII mythos of etros. Seeing that like the sorceress from FFVIII Lightning and maybe even Stella like Rinoa had to take the place of sorceress or goddess. Also, seeing Lightning and Noctis dish out damage would be amazing.
Can understand that
One can have XV with Lunafreya and Stella. The best thing would be if they were siblings and Stella inherited a power similar to Noctis's and Lunafreya is well the oracle. Having a family member who can suffer the same fate as Noctis or even worse choose to change her fate by becoming a villain would be interesting. Similarly, if Lightning was present in this universe she could then empathise with BOTH Noctis and Lunafreya. The game may then involve you, as either Lightning or Noctis, to choose a side temporarily. After all, from what I saw in Lightning Returns, Lightning doesn't mind if a pretty unpopular end can happen. Unlike Noctis she has more anti-hero elements. Which, however, could then be challenged by Noctis, in turn, she could challenge him. Aside from having a pretty more detailed romance like FFVIII which was integral to the the game this would just be also a good way to explore how Noctis, Lightning, Lunafreya and Stella both view their respective roles and etro in the grand scheme of things. This would allow Noctis's reasons for wanting a throne and Lightning's own personal journey get a wider dimension both individually and collectively.
I have NEVER seen that Omen trailer. Holy fuck that was brilliantly directed. and the music, utterly captivating.

That was the main reason why I loved the character design the first time I saw the trailer. I'm really dissapointed in the change of it I was actually hoping for a ruthless protagonist willing to bend the world to his will to protect the things he cares about even if he seems evil to the world. Now he's just this bro who's on a road trip to save the world. It really bums me out because it would be nice to have a REALLY dark final fantasy on today's current gen consoles

CezaMVO as great as that looked look up some research on how the game was supposed to be made throughout that version then at the same time look at the Final Fantasy games that came out at that time Final Fantasy 12 for instance it's just wasn't taking off Final Fantasy was slowly going downhill yeah there were a lot of fans me one of the biggest I love the 12 and 13 and I'm one of the very few people that I can sit down and play Final Fantasy 10-2 without wanting to throw my remote through the TV however public rating was slowly going down and even though that showcase look cool story that they were going to go with had major flaws too many that they decided to take a step back every team that works on the Final Fantasy project is pretty much new and absolutely terrified happy but terrified because it's such a famous title that you either do it right or you fail and never get a job again like I said do some research

Apologies on my part too then, and I agree that the end result of 15 was way better. Just the pure freaking emotion from it was just insane, and just that Noctis realized what he was supposed to do, and did it willingly with such knowing assurance for the audience- Ugh.. Just euphoria right there.

Waifu Slayer of Carim I finally figured out why we were so interested in FFVXIII -- the whole night city setting, the anti-hero, the mafia-like royal family, the opposing heroine -- it's very 'Batman' ish. You know how people love their Batman. That said, I'd like to see a Batman-like Final Fantasy, and FFXIII was the perfect opportunity to showcase that. But.... oh well.

It's very interesting to see how far the development has changed for this game... Although I have to admit that I'm very curious as to what the game would have been like based on the other gameplay seen in the older trailers- how differently it would play, how different the story would have been etc...

what made me fall In love with versus was the dark setting but now a decade later all of that has been stripped away :(
Same here, as well as the fact that he was a prince who was at war with his love interest. Yet everything was scrapped and turned into a driving simulation and even his bodyguard became an annoying character that didn't respect the king he is supposed to serve.
I love the direction they took XV in vXIII made Noctis look like a broody edge lord which is waaaaay over played in Final Fantasy. Plus, XV's love story focused on the platonic love as brothers and placed romantic love as a secondary theme. The themes of love make the sacrifice Noctis has to make feel all more poignant and realistic. It was hard not to cry at the end of the game.

+Tyler Hood The thing I hate most is that Tabata butchered what Nomura had envisioned with Versus. xv and versus aren't even the same game. I wouldn't be upset if it was Tabata directing from the beginning...Basically I am upset about not getting what was advertised. I understand change, and that trailers don't represent the final game, but there's a lot of content cut. The leviathan battle isn't nearly as epic as Nomura's take on it.
I wouldn't know about the leviathan fight. since the spoiler nonsense I have mostly been ignoring videos. But I understand. I would have loved to see what nomuras final product would be. However the company slams him with too much so ten year delays happen. So far my biggest issue with XV looks like the magic. But the rest of the combat at least looks superior. Maybe that's just better hardware and being a finished product though.

Of course, I'd love to see his approach to Final Fantasy (versus was his FF), but I'm happier that he is able to focus on the series he has built for the last decade.

lucariomew358/2 I think their designs both for their respective roles. Luna isn't really much of a fighter and is more royalty. Stella looks more casual because she is playing the villain role.

FF V XIII Noctis was a badass already. in FF XV, it took him the death of his fiance and 10 yrs of suffering and despair before getting his act together. Even then, he wasnt as badass like Noctis was in FF V XIII.

TheKidMarl H you mean like titanfall 2 and cod? both their sales were bad in spite of their insane promotion. ff15 already is a niche game that doesn't even appeal to old school Ff fans necessarily. it may well die if the game turns out mediocre. it has 10 years worth of hype to live up to, the last other game in that category is Duke nukem and we all know how that turned out.
Like every FF nowadays, it'll sell like crazy and some very loud people will say that it suck and keep babbling about how supposedly good is FF7. I have to admit that the marketing was pretty weird for FF15. It's like they started with some bad ass trailer at first, then went silent, in the last year, it was like a dating sim for women and then the very last trailer was awesome. So I have high hope but I expect a long part of some Japanese boys band road trip.

Am I the only one that thinks that the old game looked way better? Like a more serious kingdom hearts? That and Stella was way more interesting. Having his same powers while also having a connection, not wanting to fight each other but being forced to. So much wasted potencial over what? A vacation with your buds? FFXV feels like a ova to Versus XIII.
Noctis in the first 2006 trailer looks like a merciless ruler, but in 15, he's actually a really chill dude.

Grab the deluxe edition. Noct has the option of wearing a suit so-to-speak.
you get that versus noctis suit close to the end of the game. the Deluxe edition suit is actually the suit noctis' father wears in the versus trailer.
What you see on the 2006 trailer, it would have been nice to see the Kingsglaive (or at least the loyal ones) fighting the Magitek soldiers, defending the palace just like Noctis does. Instead of seeing just one guy, seeing 3 or 4 that end up heroically overrun. It would have been great to see that IMO!

Gabriel Dalposso Tetsuya was still involved you know? He moved back to efforts on KH3 once his work for FFXV was finished. I'd say his work was great. The dungeon work was pretty poor though. I've been streaming the game on my channel and my camera got locked in the hardest main dungeon. (Main meaning it wasn't one of the LV99 dungeons)
actually, he step back and now we only have the character design from him. Before he was the Director of the game, role that was passed onto Hajime Tabata (the same that directed Final Fantasy Type-0 for Consoles). It appears that SE wanted to try a more mainstream approach with this game, so it developed like a modern action game. But imo, this had sooooo much more character before...

Yeah the vision looked better but he was unable to bring in coherent direction for it for 7 years. It was only in the last 3 years of development that the game was actually taking shape. The scenario for the game was already completed by 2010 which Ferrari indirectly confirmed when he said that the changes in the plot happened every three or four months and is different from the script he received in 2011. The one who constantly changes his mind in direction is not Nomura, it's Tabata and Shimomura confirmed it when she compared how they work. She said Nomura would think deeply on what he wants and it takes long for him to approve but when he does, it won't change. Tabata on the other hand always give greenlight way too soon and make changes later on.
The musical bit was him joking and a bit desperate to get the game out because SE's management pulled back his resources and team and use them to create other games (XIII trilogy and XIV) and that's why Versus didn't fully enter production until 2013, but by then SE decided to kick him out of the project because they'd rather have him in KH3 and VIIR.
I'll never forget looking at screen shots of the teaser in a game informer magazine back in 2006. I said "I can't WAIT until this comes out!" .
Both of them were good concepts. I'm just partial to Versud 13 due to character design, futuristic dystopian backdrop, and the anti-hero aspect. The only other game I can think of that Square made which gave off that vibe was Dirge of Cerberus. Versus is basically the Batman of Final Fantasy; would've obviously been badass. I'm on love what they did with Noct's personality in 15 even though it would've been the same in Versus, I feel like it suits the world and story of 15 better.

That 2006 reveal trailer always gets me. It's super dark and astonishingly badass. However, I feel that the changes made to the game were appropriate because it looks absolutely incredible the way it is currently.

Honestly, I could see teen drama stuff on that 2016 trailer version. It was like watching some Hollywood actor go emotional drama in those scenes with the wolf. The old trailers have that classical Squaresoft appeal to me just like back when it was still FF8 and Parasite Eve that I had my eyes on.
So basically....I loved the game (FFXV) I was looking for a nice adventure I could sink a lot of hours into as a casual gamer and it wasn't bad, the Kingsglaive movie set a nice tone for some trademark visuals and an easy enough story concept. I don't mind the game having lighter tones but people should know it's not necessarily one or the other, it's really only light hearted in broad day on an easy hunt, some of the bases you take down can be challenging, the caves/dungeons were eerie, and the whole second half of the game was very dramatic and throws you head first back into the seriousness of the situation, Chapter 14 draaaaaagged but it was pretty much creep city, and you don't always have your pals around. I didn't want a endless battle after battle of bots like what VS looks like it would have been. XV has a pulse of it's own, and was exactly what I was looking for. To those talking about Noctis being whiny well he is, I mean look at him he's a prince, even Vegeta cried (several times) but Noct and crew all balance eachother and if you actually play the game in full instead of trailer bashing you'll see his development from Prince to King, it is a story afterall folks.
I think many people, including myself, were expecting a tragedy or anti-hero kind of story, and it was a disappointment to see that the game ended up with a story that has the overused and mainstream themes of friendship and good vs evil. I mean, the game is far from being bad, but there is nothing especial about it. I don't remember any scene or element in the story that is memorable. Also, the game has bloody awful sidequests.
laloGMful respect your opinion, though for me it was very entertaining. Also Ardyn proved to be an interesting villain.
laloGMful Personally I found several moments to be memorable. The Boss Fight with Leviathan, Noctis breaking down in front of Cor when they were talking about his father, Noctis's final farewell to his friends and that final campfire scene. Also anything involving Ardyn was a joy. I even found the side quests enjoyable thanks to the banter between the four main characters and the genuinely fun gameplay. The game certainly has flaws in the execution of its story, but the actual story itself is quite good in my opinion. It just needs to be further elaborated on. Hopefully the expansions will fix the problem. Even in its current state though, it's still easily my favorite Final Fantasy since IX. Maybe it helped that I didn't really follow the development of Versus XIII. I saw the initial reveal trailer and that was about it, so I was able to go into XV without any preconceived notions on how the game would and should play out.
DevilHunter1994 Yeah I'm in the same situation I found out the game had been in development for 10 years like a week from release, and didn't think much of it since technically a character concept can count as development. Lol Oddly enough after watching the comparison I realized I had a desktop background of Noct from VS on my old PC that blew my mind that it was the same guy now in FFXV, because like I said had no idea. I'd imagine it'd be harder for fans anticipating VS, but to receive XV, but well if you strictly experienced XV you probably had a completely different experience. And yeah dude I think without Kingsglaive and some informative RUclipsrs I watched after beating the game the actual depth of the story maybe lost on some players, it's worth the research because the game can be a little vague, especially the past with Ardyn.
bLAKE cRAFT Agreed. The supplementary material is one complaint that I can understand people making. It kinda sucks that you absolutely HAVE to see the supplementary material to understand the story. I feel like all that really should have been in the game proper, or at least bundled with it. Still, the movie and anime are very enjoyable, so I can forgive it somewhat.

The real reason they re-make it 'this' way is because of the release of FF7 remake for ps4 which is coming soon after FFXV while KH3 is in development.
And if you've played FF7 , it's set in a 'dark gloomy ass' environment.

The gameplay alone in 2006 is way better than hold one button simulator. Also, it takes place in the FF13 world, while 13 is not the greatest. It actually had a really good set up to the world and lore about the gods. 13-2 and 13-3 touched on the concept a lot of what I believe Versus would have been. Especially since Versus was focusing on Etro. The goddess of Death. But they get the guy who wrote Dissidia to make a main title. As if Duodecim didn't have a laughably bad story.

It looks it was originally planned to spend more time in Insomnia which would have been awesome. I kept looking forward to exploring a sprawling metropolis which never happened. Still loved the game though.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII has now become Verum Rex and part of the Kingdom Hearts storyline. Somehow though it feels like there’s way more going on in this story than we realize because XV also connects to this first trailer in the book

I've completed 15 now and all of the side content too which I'm sure many other people have by this point too, but I just can't help this empty feeling that it is a huge tragedy this game took almost 12 years to finally release, meaning so much of the original game and script was scrapped, and if I'm perfectly honest, the finished product storyline was so watered down. We barely got to see most of the characters shown in the trailers more than once each.
