She sounded weak where she should be strong (no conviction) which also doesn't reflect the overall mood of the song. Just my personal take on this.

She was saving all the power for the end. She definitely brought it.
You should react to Amber performing at the Oliver Awards with “And I’m Telling You” for when she was in Dreamgirls. I know you did her Glee version, but it’s great to see how she developed as a signer.
Also great to see it live and not pre-recorded vocals.

There's nothing wrong with her voice. "Wicked In Concert" last year was about to create new arrangements of the original songs
You didnt listen to what she said, did you? She's not complaining about the voice but on the production value of the performance. Who ever mixed it in the editing of this show dialed down her powerful vocals. I can understand what she's trying to say.
This sounds so off tempo. I don't like this version. Not a power house performance

I watch them consistently! Great demonstration of her voice that weren’t Pop/Hip Hop.
I thought the same. We know she CAN sing the song but I thought it was very subdued of her. I didn’t think she was sick, I would say the composers(whoever in charge) probably told her when and where she’s allowed to deviate. My guess anyway..
I'm not a Glee fan, but even before you made the comment that she sounded muted I thought the same thing. She's holding back, but the question is was she sick, as you mentioned, was it the composer, both? The whole song I feel like she could have been a powerhouse but was holding back for her range.
personally I feel like it was the composer and the arrangement. she’s hitting all of the high notes at the end perfectly fine so I don’t think she was sick she was probably just told to pull back a little which is a shame.

I kind of liked the lower "everyone deserves..." actually. Might have been a stylistic choice so there would be more emphasis on "FLY!" It's different, but I don't hate it.

I don't know how to put it into words, cause I don't know all the jargon, but Amber was one of the most underused voices on that whole show. (Right up there with Naya, truly a shame.)
Gotta say I was really annoyed with the lyric mistake (no, not the part that's modified for a solo version). They should've asked her to do another take, it wasn't a live performance. That's more a problem with the production here, not her. Singers make mistakes, but in a recorded performance, production should catch and fix that.

It was mixed with priority to the orchestra and not the singer. It's a shame that producer is going to have own it. I'm sure they thought it was "good."

No one has said this yet. But Amber had surgery on her vocal cords some point after glee. I don’t know if this is before or after. She is obviously babying her voice

I think the mix was kinda....unbalanced, but I think it was more that she was making the stylistic choice for it to be soft and airy to start so she could build. Possibly, as you said, because she had a cold and had to save her voice for the end.
amber is not mercedes. that's where the disconnect is. yes mercedes would've brought it quicker, but amber likes to build more to keep us on the edge of our seats. she does so often especially after glee. it is not unlike her to use that airier texture. she's honestly not nearly as much of a powerhouse as mercedes is, especially in her recorded music. we must be careful not to trap black actors in a box after they reach success in a specific role.
also, yes i believe she did have a cold. and i agree with the mixing

Maybe, just maybe Amber is not cut out to sing that song??! Don’t get me wrong, I love Amber / Mercedes very very much but not every singers can sing every type on songs… and please respect my opinion ok. Have a nice day you all and stay safe. ☺️
You are right that not everyone is cut out for every song, but I do not believe that Amber is wrong for this song. She sounds different than normal in the beginning, but by the end it really starts to get into her cords. She has a Broadway belty voice with amazing range and this is the song to show it. I would say that this performance isn't amazing but it isn't the song or the singer, just a mix of Amber being a little off her game and obviously production issues with mixing with the orchestra.
I watched this when it aired and I just thought she was singing it different then everyone else does. I thought Amber was amazing during the show.

You need some patience. She takes her sweet time to hit those high flying notes at the end and every understated note before it was measured to create anticipation. I liked this version.

I love Amber and her voice, she's a literal vocal goddess. But even when she sang this song on Glee with Lea and Chris, I don't like her voice with this song.

Keep in mind too, Glee ended 6.5 years prior to the Wicked In Concert show (almost 7 years as of now. Sniffle). I’m sure Amber’s style on the show vs now has changed.

Miss Audrey - I agree, the mix is way off. Also, this isn't a Glee performance, this is from a PBS special, which often screws up the mixing. But I must say that I like Amber's vocal arrangement - it's just enough different from Idina's (and everyone else's) version to make it special in it's own way.
Well I will say that Amber purposely sings differently from the character Mercedes Jones, so that could also contribute to why she sound different to what people are used to hearing on her glee days. Amber has talked about how she was constantly put in a box and made to sing a certain way while on Glee and it frustrated her.
Personally, I'm not a fan of this performance. Defying Gravity is just one of those songs that is better when it is performed with the full orchestra and background characters. You need EVERYTHING for this song to work perfectly.

Please do a react for Beau McDermott singing this song at Britain’s Got Talent 2016!!!! She is 12 years old and sings this more fluidly than anyone I have seen at her age!
This was mixed and produced be PBS. They had to push it out on public television airwaves, so it had to be very condensed. Kind of a downside of live broadcast television
I think that one or both things happened here: 1) her talent is way way way higher than her accompaniment and I think she was told to calm it down by “the powers that be” 2) the sound mixer is the guy that mixes just talking pubic access shows and doesn’t deserve to mix amber EVER

I think it's a stylistic choice. Amber sings live with an orchestra and she does it very well but unlike you I believe she measured her interpretation and chose to balance it between broadway style and gospel style

She very well could be sick. It’s like she knew that it wasn’t completely in her so she purposefully held back in the beginning so she could let it rip for the ending notes .
She also may not have been allowed to add all of her “Amber Rileyness” to the table since the Wicked producers don’t love making too many changes to the song. This was an official Wicked celebration thing and used as marketing for the Broadway show.
