The entire Jagged Little Pill album is so good! She helped set the stage for female singer/songwriters to realize it’s okay to express their raw emotions and pain, unapologetically through their music.
The scary part is that she was only one of a dozen Canadian Female Led Rock Bands in Canada at the time. It was glorious, and so different than anywhere else.
This album is incredible. Forget the commercial success, almost every song is brilliant, lyrically, emotionally, sonically, instrumentation, contextually etc. She was, and still is, a truly special artist and this album was, to simply describe, was “the perfect storm”
All these decades later I still know every note, every word of this song- it’s still the only song I’ve ever heard by a female artist (I’m almost 50😳)that expresses THIS level of anger. I think (besides her unique voice and a star studded band behind her) the reason this song became so popular and beloved is because of the expression of her anger at his betrayal ... The brutal honesty of how angry betrayed and hurt she felt was perfectly captured in this song. And that’s something you still don’t get to hear from female artists!
Well said. Taylor Swift had a few songs in the 2000s, but I think those fall under Bubblegum Pop. As far as Angry Rock, one of the only current songs I can think of that expresses anger like this is "Animosity" by The Warning.
I had my daughter listening to this when she was closer to college age, to my surprise I was walking into her crew meet and heard it blasting from the warm up room..she had it on the warm up playlist and had her whole crew team into it-I felt a little proud moment knowing I had a little bit part in introducing about 20 college girls to some real music!
There is a hidden track on this album. You had to wait a few minutes and it’s one of the most ethereal songs. It’s called Your House. You so t regret it.
friendly reminder, I pan the camera to help prevent the video from getting it blocked. I was able to get away with not doing it as much this time, but I still had to. Thanks for understanding. Enjoyed this so much.
Alanis...Goddess, weirdo...love her. She's amazing live... In this video, the beautiful and extraordinary Taylor Hawkins on drums....damn it, we miss you 💔
The in-your-face lyrics tend to overshadow the incredible performance from the musicians. Flea sounds like someone said - you figure this out. Nasty bass line - nasty
This album skyrocketed here to the top and the fame ended up overwhelming her that she took time off to go to India to balance out. Uninvited is one of my favs by her. Cheers 🇨🇦
Taylor Hawkins on drums too...such a phenomenal line up of folks performing on this one. Look into the Lilith Fair if you want to see what some amazing woman musicians were doing in that alt/post grunge time 🖤
He's on the video, but he isn't in the recording, he only joined her band after the album had been already recorded. He played it in the live versions of the tour (and you can hear the difference, it get's a lot more shuffle).
Alanis raw talent, raw words, everyone knows what she is singing about. when my grandkids are teenagers and old enough to understand the meaning of this song hope they enjoy it as much as i did, timeless I'm 60 and i can only hope they pass it along for the next generation to enjoy and pass it to their children.so thank you Salvog for keeping it alive .it needs to be heard.
This spoke to so many women of all ages, so relatable, of being unexpectedly kicked in your gut by someone you cared deeply about. The grief, deep heartbreak replaced by the raw angry wrath of a banshee who gave everything and was thrown aside without a care, pushed to the edge of insanity but empowering as a new strength was found to walk away with an "you're loss, I'm worth more..." ...btw we ALL knew who it was about, definitely his loss.
Every time I listen to this song I have to play it two or three times minimum. You can hear in her voice and see in the video, she is just metaphorically bleeding all over the stage, someone ripped her heart out and she is holding it up to the light to show everyone what they did. In a world where women still get discouraged from taking up emotional space, that's such a powerful thing to do.
Oh yes! I agree so much with this. The 90's also gave us Tori Amos, with Crucify ("So you can make me cum / That doesn't make you Jesus") and Hey Jupiter ("if my heart's soaking wet, Boy your boots can leave a mess") - but You Oughta Know was sheer anger + hurt. Women generally aren't allowed to be angry, and this song was so damn cathartic and unique. Totally an anthem for every woman ever dumped.
This song was groundbreaking when it came out. Unquestionably. Lyrically, vocally, everything. Groundbreaking. I love some of her acoustic performances of it because you hear the hurt, not the anger.
Thanks for your reaction! This whole album is terrific and won her a Grammy award. Although Alanis claims she wrote this for herself and it is not about any one in particular, actor Dave Coulier (he played Uncle Joey in "Full House") states this song is about him. Alanis was a teenager at the time they were involved and he was quite a bit older. David broke it off to date someone his own age. Some of the lyrics were direct statements to him and the time line of when this song came out are about right. That is Taylor Hawkins playing drums in this song.
Oh man, you definitely inspired me to break out Jagged Little Pill. I played the crap out of that album back in the day, and sang with it at the top of my lungs. It is so empowering, cathartic, and both lyrically and musically impressive. I just love that Alanis played God in Dogma, the cult classic movie written by Kevin Smith starring Matt Damon, Ben Afleck, and about 10 other insanely good actors and comedians including George Carlin, Alan Rickman...seriously, everyone was in that film, it was an embarrassment of riches, and Alanis's God just made me so happy, lol.

This is a masterpiece, she is an amazing song writing and an absolutely perfect singer. Thanks for show this to new generation.
I just saw her sing that at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in LA...Picture 10,000 women on their feet screaming out the lyrics of this song. Powerful.
This song is so good. You really feel this one. Every time she says “But you’re still alive!” Like it’s an accusation you want to ask whoever that is why he isn’t freaking dead yet. And when she says “And every time I scratch my nails down someone else’s back, I hope you feel. Well can you felt it?” My face just mirrors that emotion. I’ve never even had a nasty break up like this and I fully empathize. The lyrics are good, the production is good, that base line is so good but her delivery drives it to 11 out of 10.
You should react to all her songs from this album. One of the best albums ever made by anyone. Also her performance of the song uninvited at an awards show is amazing as well
The Jagged Little Pill album is a masterpiece. Alanis' lyrics are some of the best in the business. One of the few artists who can write whole songs were the lines/lyrics don't rhyme so it comes across more like the story she is trying to tell. Alanis is the GOAT. Her live performances are superb too.
Mad to think that if not for Madonna, this album might never have gotten out there. They recorded the album first then shopped it around looking for a record deal. Every major label turned it down. It was Madonna's small record label Maverick that signed Alanis Morissette and released the album. It's the biggest selling debut album worldwide of all time, at 33 million copies!
I’ve seen her 5 times in concert over several decades and every time she sings this, she has the same amount of emotion as her video. One time, flames were coming up from the stage all around her. It was awesome!
There was a bonus track on this album called Would you forgive me love, and every time it played my infant daughter would cry and cry, almost like it was painful to her.
Personnel on this track include Flea on bass (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Dave Navarro on guitar (Jane's Addiction/Red Hot Chili Peppers). Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters) RIP was featured as the drummer in the video and was in the band at the time, however was not on the recording. Great artist, great song, great album. Check out one of her live performances, her voice is incredible. I would suggest the live version of Uninvited.
I was 12 or 13 and grew up during the best time ever. My older sister had this album, and I was OBSESSED. 90’s alternative is my absolute favorite, and Alanis is at the top of the list. I LOVE her honesty, and anger, and the vibe she brings to all of her music. She doesn’t hold back with her thoughts, words, or feelings, and that was just so refreshing.
Great reaction! Alanis was my favorite female artist at that time. Her album Jagged Little Pill is amazing. My favorite song of that album is Hand in my Pocket.
This got heavy rotation on MTV - back when MTV played videos. So this was huge. Radio stations bleeped the bad words. I bought Jaged Little Pill. Everyone I knew had the album. Again, this was huge. So honest and raw. I found it refreshing.
Absolute ferocious bitterness - an astonishing piece of work. Jagged Little Pill was an incredible album, this track was the lead exposure and it's still ferocious to this day.
I absolutely love this song!! She said it was so emotional singing it in concert on tour- and I think about the guy in the song (and those of us that heard it when it came out knew exactly who it was about as did he - it really wasnt a secret) poor schmuck heard it everywhere he went for months! That's right cheater, think about what you did! And know everyone else is too every time this song is played! Genius
The song "All I Really Want" is my favorite on this album. All the songs are amazing on it. This song launched a whole bunch of awesome music by women.
Such a fan! This album came out when I was graduating college in New York City. My five year relationship had just ended and three months later he was married to someone else! I remember blasting this song on repeat screaming along. It became my anthem as she put into words everything that was going through my head. Alanis rocks. The whole album jagged Little pill is beautiful and they eventually made a Broadway play called jagged Little pill using all the music from this album! Welcome to Alanis. Can’t wait to see more. Love your reactions. ❤️🫶🏻✌️
Oh yes, this whole album was a staple of mine in college (1996-1999), especially this song after a particularly nasty breakup. It was on top volume in my car with the windows down (except I would turn the volume off for the 'f' word, lol). I think my favorite song on that album is "Forgiven". And yes, I still have this album on my playlist and listen to it often. Also, interesting fact, Alanis was on the Nickelodeon TV show "You Can't Do That On Television". I used to watch that in the 80's and remember her being on it.
Alanis is a musical goddess who doesn’t get the attention or credit she deserves these days. Definitely check out more of her work and if you like it, you should check out Fiona Apple. Musics geniuses.
She has a lot of great songs. My favorite is "Uninvited," which isn't from this album but from a movie soundtrack. But JLP has a lot of great songs on it. My fave from it would have to be, "All I really Want." It's her other really "hard" rocking song from this album. There are few other really good ones, "Hand In My Pocket" and "You Learn" are more upbeat songs. Also, it was one of the first CD's to have a "hidden" track. Which was a trend in the 90's. Certain bands would record additional music or messages on the last track of a CD, but it wouldn't play until after a few minutes. Most people, when they hear the last song on an album end and then silence after that would think the album's is over and take the CD out and play something else. In her case, the "hidden" track was number 13, even though there were only 12 listed on the back cover. It's an alternate version of "You Oughta Know" and after about a minute of silence, she sings an absolutely haunting and heartbreaking acoustic song. Check it: ruclips.net/video/NltkkFv4F9E/видео.html
The whole album is fire. I could not get enough of this in 1995. Still love it. You know, it occurs to me that if you like this song you might wanna listen to the Pretenders' first album, especially the songs Precious and Tattooed Love Boys. One of the best debut albums ever.
The soundtrack of my teens. My three sibs and I each bought our own copy of this album so we didn't have to wait and take turns. This song exploded, it reached us all the way here in the Philippines and this was pre-internet.
Basically it is a song dedicated to an ex-love after a breakup where, although she wishes him well, she has a few questions and feels perhaps some of their issues were unresolved, and she may not be experiencing a complete sense of closure.
Yeah because she was strung along by someone who led her to believe he was being honest and sincere... most likely due his own baggage. He used her body and wasted her time. Should have made it clear... "I'm not looking for anything serious atm". So easy to say... but some people can't seem to utter the words... but they can rattle off every other lie in the book 🤣🤣!
Very sad... Gen X men could be some serious douche bags at times. They say boomers are oversexed and players etc.. but in my experience Gen X men were far worse.
@@Not-Ap I don't judge people or men by the generation they are from. Every generation has its own range of good and bad people. For me this song doesn't feel "very sad". It became an anthem for women because it acknowledged that women were empowered to call out the bad behavior of men.
Actor Dave Coulier ('Joey' on Full House) had a relationship with Morissette in 1997. Discussing the first time he heard ‘You Oughta Know’, Coulier said: “I’m driving in Detroit and I’ve got my radio on, and I hear the hook for ‘You Oughta Know’ come on the radio. I’m like, ‘Wow this is a really cool hook.’ And then I start hearing the voice and I’m like, ‘Wow, this girl can sing…’ And then I was listening to the lyrics, going, ‘Oh no. Oh, I can’t be this guy!’”
She was pissed...one of the best female rockers telling it like it is...
The entire Jagged Little Pill album is so good! She helped set the stage for female singer/songwriters to realize it’s okay to express their raw emotions and pain, unapologetically through their music.
Yeah this album ruled the planet from mid 90’s on!!
She is beloved amongst metalheads, because she was real. Just as heavy, but in a different way. 🤘
The scary part is that she was only one of a dozen Canadian Female Led Rock Bands in Canada at the time. It was glorious, and so different than anywhere else.
there is no bad song on jagged little pill. glad i had the opportunity to grow up on it
@@jaredknutson6484 AGREED AND DITTO!!!!!!!!!
I went thru a divorce in 2000 while i was pregnant, and that was my cross to bear and i played this song over and over and over. Thank you alanis
❤
When people say Jagged Little Pill was big, it literally cannot be overstated how hard this album hit the stage.
This is from one of the biggest selling albums of the 90’s; not just “…by a female.”
The whole album slaps.
This album is incredible. Forget the commercial success, almost every song is brilliant, lyrically, emotionally, sonically, instrumentation, contextually etc. She was, and still is, a truly special artist and this album was, to simply describe, was “the perfect storm”
She performed this at the Grammys with a candlelit stage, wearing a long, elegant dress, much more quiet and way more intense and scary.
All these decades later I still know every note, every word of this song- it’s still the only song I’ve ever heard by a female artist (I’m almost 50😳)that expresses THIS level of anger. As far as Angry Rock, one of the only current songs I can think of that expresses anger like this is "Animosity" by The Warning.
That's because there's zero talent around these days
@@bloodybutunbowed291 XXI century blood, Exterminated, Queen of the murder scene, Shattered heart a of them by The Warning as well! 👍

You need to hear Marianne Faithfull's Why D' Ya Do It from her album Broken English. From 1979, just as raw and powerful.
this song was a gamechanger. loved it then, love it now.
This album was the first CD I ever got.
When i scratch my nails down someones back, I hope you feel it!
Love it! Never heard before.
There is a hidden track on this album. You had to wait a few minutes and it’s one of the most ethereal songs. It’s called Your House. You so t regret it.
Alanis is a badass! Amazing songwriter and such a distinct voice! Would love for you to react to more of her!
Brutal album, but utterly amazing.
friendly reminder, I pan the camera to help prevent the video from getting it blocked. I was able to get away with not doing it as much this time, but I still had to. Thanks for understanding. Enjoyed this so much.
I actually like the camera pan technique. It's an interesting method of avoiding getting flagged if it works.
My first concert was her Jagged little pill tour!! Still love her!!
This wasnt just an artist. She was fierce and killed it
Angry sarcasm is so my groove, this is the best bitter bad break-up song Ever!
That album is stellar. Absolutely fantastic!
The ULTIMATE "You broke my heart, and I'm not happy about it" song!!
It’s really cool to see you hear these songs for the first time. I guess we just took her for granted. Rock on
This album skyrocketed here to the top and the fame ended up overwhelming her that she took time off to go to India to balance out. Uninvited is one of my favs by her. Cheers 🇨🇦
More more please..
When this song released, every man in the entire world collectively FLINCHED. We felt it. LOL
MASTERPIECE
This whole album is fire! But my favorite song is from the soundtrack for City of Angels called Uninvited.
That’s the one!! 🔥🔥🔥
This!!! Uninvited is a masterpiece
this was the anthem my mom and I sang at the top of our lungs for years after my father left..... It's an amazing song of female power and pain!
Taylor Hawkins on drums too...such a phenomenal line up of folks performing on this one.

Awesome singer and I'm proud she's a Canadian
She starts more chill with her vocals and then it builds this intensity.
I discovered Alanis Morissette and Pearl Jam at the same time in the 1990's and made compilation cassettes. They are still favorites on playlists now!
This song kicks ass. Alanis is a heroine.
Alanis goes for the throat!!
She murdered this song. Love it.
I used to blast this in my car.

Her and Dave refuted this recently but I do know it's a popular theory.
This is true, when I first heard this I said someone hurt her BAD!
Taylor Hawkins is in the video and played on her tour, but it's not him on the record.

I saw her in the summer of either 95 or 6 when this album came out. She was the closing act of an all day outdoor venue. She even had a mosh pit!🤘🔥
She did an acoustic version of this on MTV (I think) that was amazingly powerful.
She won a Grammy for her album Jagged Little Pill!
I love all her music. It doesn't all rock this hard but it is all unique and interesting.
This album blew up LA Radio - she is a huge talent and the whole album was a hit. MORE FROM HER

The soundtrack to 33 million people's lives in 1996... My favourite solo female singer.... the band were tight and yes Taylor Hawkins on drums 🙏🙏🙏
The world tour for the 'Jagged Little Pill' album had Taylor Hawkins on drums, prior to his joining FooFighters.
This whole album is so good. Not a bad song on the whole thing. Great reaction!! 🙂
The song is about her bitter breakup from "Full House" actor Dave Coulier.
@@Not-Ap It is about Dave Coulier from the sitcom "Full House".
You Shoulda Know that Alanis was out there.
One benefit of the record companies and radio stations is that they promoted artists.
The whole album is worth a listen.
You MUST do a deep dive on the entire Jagged Little Pill album.
For a lot of women this became an iconic anthem. Still great.
@@jainthorne4136 That's a very enlightened way to look at it and I never thought to look at the song that way myself which is also far healthier.
I knew this song would make you blush! LOL
Great album. Not one throw away song. Hit after hit. Taylor Hawkins on drums for this one. Phenomenal.
I murdered this album when it came out!! Alanis is one of my top 2 go to girls, she does amazing music, and suck a unique voice!
The song and entire album is AWESOME
