“Thank U” in so many levels is a prayer for me. It’s manifesting you might be torn in pieces, but still can make it. A breather to let go and reunite and remain standing. Such a love letter to one self.
It inspires me too
Well said
There's always something about this song that brings me to tears...every time...even after all these years. Beautiful and so human.
Me too. Every time I hear it.
Me too. Just rips my heart out every verse but with hope
Same here. Gratitude is powerful
@jiggity76 Me too. This song conveys the journey of self-discovery & wisdom as honestly and effectively as “You Oughtta Know” conveys the anger & brutal heartache of betrayal and a destroyed relationship.
Me too and I'm glad it's not just me. I'm a 51 yr old man and i'm sitting here with tears running down face. Gets me every time.
She is a truly unique individual. Her voice is one of a kind and her willing vulnerability for her audience is deeply giving. Her music healed a lot of us.
The moment I let go of it / was the moment I got more that I 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 handle / The moment I jumped off of it / was the moment I touched down ... ♡
Very powerful song. Baring it all, literally and emotionally. Invites us all to do a little self-reflection.
She's thanking the negative things she's had to put up with. Made her stronger.
Jagged Little Pill is one of the best albums ever ......this album won an Emmy.
JLP is a pretty perfect album.
But this was actually from the follow up....Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie.
A much more dense cryptic somewhat darker album.....but quite intriguing and worth repeat listens.
Thank U is easily my favorite Alanis song ever. It's too perfect.
I am 44 and grew up with her music. I want to thank you for reviewing it and bringing it to new audiences. Here are some lesser-known hits that you might enjoy. It does not mean you have to showcase them, but they are pure Alanis all the way. All I Really Want, That I Would be Good (will rip your heart out), This Grudge, UR, Unsent, So Pure, Your Congratulations (again, will rip your heart out), 21 Things I Want in a Lover, Underneath, Incomplete, The Reasons I Drink, Smiling, Just a few to get you started. The evolution of this artist is amazing! I hope you enjoy these tunes
And Front Row, and Tapes (this songs one her bests and powerful with her voice)!
@@GregVD Agreed!
So glad ppl are appreciating her again. There was so much flak about her voice, ppl saying she was screechy and couldn't sing. But her lyrics were raw and honest, and her voice was the perfect vehicle for what she had to say. Anything with a softer edge would've been much less effective. She had a message and a voice that perfectly matched it. ❤🎉
My favorite song of hers, close second would be uninvited
She is just magic, loved her since first time I heard her back in the 90s
I wish I could hear Alanis again for the first time.
You need to hear the live version she and her band performed during the pandemic, each in their own homes. It's really stunning, and she still sounds amazing. Search for "Alanis Morissette - Thank u -Live - Budweiser Stage At Home 7/25/2020." It's incredibly powerful.
Thank you, I didn't know about that and this album was one of my favorites!
The songs are unique because most of her songs are about her life
That is true and someone I like alot that is also like that is Justin Furstenfeld from Blue October. He too has a great voice and excellent songwriter. I like songs with deep meaning and they both have recorded plenty.
Supremely talented. She’s so strong and humble. So beautiful
anything you'll ever hear from her that's live will blow you away... doesn't miss a beat or a note... truly unique
Allansis is my all-time favorite female vocalist, Robert Plant is my favorite male vocalist. She is so talented all around. Great singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and from watching her videos I think she would probably be a good actress. I love the "Ironic" video where she potrays different characters during a car ride.
She's INCREDIBLE!!! ❤
unsent, guardian, so pure, are some great alanis songs that don't get as much attention.
Her time was around the turn in music like Nirvana and Ajice in Chains and Pearl Jam
She's simply amazing. You're right there is nothing/nobody quite like her. One of my favorites. For another powerful woman, I suggest watching Kelly Clarkson's "meaning of life" Nashville sessions specifically. She's such a powerhouse.
Love your reactions to her. I hope you react to her song Hands Clean and Smiling.
This song live honestly changed my brain chemistry
Try Alanis' "Hands Clean" or "So Pure"
You hit the nail on the head: The songs are truly unique !
A favorite of me is "Mary Jane".
All the best from the Netherlands!
La escuchaba siempre durante un duelo que vivi muy doloroso y es sanadora la música 💜💜Alanis siempre eterna
My favorite song of hers lyrically.
love this song and video
She is sheer brilliance.
This one always helps me slow down and express gratitude - Thank YOU, Alanis!
I did not understand the lyrics of this song when I was 20, but now after recovering from severe childhood emotional abuse that I didn't even know was there, I understand every line. It is about recovering from abuse and awakening spiritually. From the vulnerability (symbolized by her nakedness) to the negative effects in ones life (addictions, illness) to cope with the abuse, to the spiritual awakening that we are all immortal divine pieces of god, to the part of forgiveness, because that's the only way to finally free yourself from your abusers. Your 'teachers' along the way to spiritual growth are terror, disillusionment , consequences (of your choices) and your biggest friends along the road are silence (to help you process), frailty (daring to feel the pain), nothingness (gives peace) and clarity (obvious). Not equating death with stopping is realizing we are immortal souls in a body (reincarnation). Thank you Alanis Morissette, such a wise soul
Honestly I basically love all of her songs, even the ones that never made radio play. I probably could sing the entire album of Under Rug Swept by memory, heh. 'So Unsexy' is such a powerful song. A lot of the songs in that album were a reaction to the way her musical mentor took advantage of her in a relationship for way too long, iirc.
FINALLY THIS RECORD IS MENTIONED!!! That is just a hair below Jagged for me. But not? 21 things, So Unsexy, Precious Illusions, HANDS FREAKING CLEAN
Have you heard her Uninvited? If not, hurry. Do the LIVE version at the Oscars ...or Emmy's can't recall which it was......
Great, great melody. The chorus is an all-timer. And the lyrics are next level. As others have pointed out, the video represents the vulnerability of baring it all and just laying your feelings out there.
Thank you. I came here originally for the for the reactions to women. I am still making my way through them.❤💛💜💚🧡❤
You should give Sinead O'Connor a shot (everyone listens to her #1 'Nothing Compares 2 U' (which is great.... but....) You should maybe try 'Troy' 'Thief of Your Heart' 'Jackie' or '3 Babies' if ya do give her a go. (she's like my 5th favorite females voices of all time.... I think VH1's countdown of '100 Greatest Female Voices' had her at #22.)
It's so funny....I was 15 when this song first came out, and I didn't like it. Never connected to me at all.
Now? It's one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time. It's perfect.
It's SO simple...just 3 diatonic chords thru the whole song. But it WORKS. It's kinda dream pop, but with a groove and break beat. Something about it is supremely catchy but also really poignant. It's just...perfect. Aurora, one of my favorite artists and humans ever, did a cover of it....and it's excellent, for anyone who's interested. It's pretty faithful to the original, but Aurora's voice works on it. The vibe of the song and the lyrics even feel like something Aurora might have written herself.
Wowwwwww ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ great energy
Thank U SalvoG for posting. You learn, for classics. Reasons I drink, for current Alanis Morrissette, or Rest. If you do Rest you must do "Mitchell's Joni Mitchell ~ Big Yellow Taxi + Both Sides Now (BBC - 1969)"
I want to recommend Tori Amos and PJ Harvey! I'm loving your videos, btw
Talk about chills you guys this is nuts!
Thank you. That’s one my favorites of her music.
"That i would be good" Alanis Morissette..MTV Unplugged 🖤🖤
Your next Alanis should be the official “One Hand in my Pocket” video. You’ll dig it.
Love this...please watch this on "Storytellers" I think vh1. She's live and she explains the song...
Alanis is definitely one of a kind. LOVE her!
You have to react to her lives performances ! perfect voice
If you love the vibe of this song, try "Uninvited"...this is the warm-up for that song!
This song always brings me back to my first real heartbreak from my first love. This song is beautiful and nostalgic. I will always have a special place in my heart for this one!
I love this song, she is an amazing singer . I’ve only heard this type of ‘yodelling’ on an album I have by Dadawa called Sister Drum. They are a Chinese group and the album is in their own version of a Tibetan spiritual style of music. The first song especially ‘Home Without Shadow’ has this singing style and the whole album is contemplative and meditative
Aurora will sometimes do that kind of vocalization.
In fact, she actually covered this very song, Thank U.
I do love how the song ends....with it fading out on Alanis just freeform chanting over the top. The melodic choices she makes are so interesting and emotionally perfect.
Another great song. Very quotable lyricism. I still listen to this album on the regular. :)
A beautiful song, with a message that we should all take, this song sounds like the sound of my cell phone a thousand years ago...
So great
Love this song! I recommend Hand in My Pocket.
Another one I like is Crazy. It’s actually a cover of a song by Seal. Both versions are good.
incredibly beautiful visual and auditory composition
Big favourite of mine-i find it quite emotional x
Yes you definitely got to hear this live
Do “you oughta know”
She's so frickin' talented
There is a live version and it sounds even better
these lyrics kill me.I aspire to reach that
My favorite Alanis love you
You're right, she's so unique
Please check out Ablaze. A newer song of hers about being a parent. So beautiful!
Underrated AS HELL, but one of her (many) BEST SONGS, is called "Unsexy".
"The moment I let go of it was the moment I got more than I could handle. The moment I jumped off of it was the moment I touched down." Those lyrics, man...first time I heard those lyrics I was like...yeah, that's it. The whole song is beautiful and deep but those lyrics right there...that's hard-earned wisdom. I play this song often to remind me not to be afraid to let go and jump off.
Glad you got around to this song, another Alanis hit. Great insights and info. I noticed that you've also done some Broadway reactions. With Alanis' involvement, there was a Broadway musical called Jagged Little Pill that used songs from Alanis' album. She wrote two additional songs for the musical and they're both great, Smiling and Predator. You should check out Predator, from the cast recording on youtube so you'll get the full orchestration. It's sung by Kathryn Gallagher who plays a high school student who is assaulted at a party and then has her classmates blame her or claim that she's lying. The song is emotional and haunting. Alanis also posted the demo of her singing the song. It's on her youtube channel.
It's the antithesis to "You Oughta Know".
It's been a while since you done an Alanis video. Have you thought about "You Learn"?
Next Alanis song and official video must be “Hand in my Pocket”. It’s a no brainer, really.
There's no video for it, but you should listen to Forgiven from Jagged Little Pills. It's such a unique and powerful song.
The Storyteller performance was at The Roxy Theater, New York 1999.
like no one else, as you say
Never a dry eye for me with this one 😢
Great stuff. You really should check out Bjork.
Do "Hands Clean". Pretty epic.
My favourite Alanis song is "Forgiven" from Jagged Little Pill followed by "Wake Up" from the same album (though I pretty much love the entire album), but there are no music videos for either of those two. "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" is still my favourite album of all time but its a bit more "esoteric" than Jagged, a lot of songs written in her (self described) "stream of consciousness" format which I find is hard to follow on first listen, but there's a beauty in the lyricism matched with the beat you discover after listening a few times, a bit like a rap but as a song (lame description).
And she’s from Canada.
I will second the recommendation to check out her live version VH1 (or was it MTV) Storytellers.
After that, check out a performance from a few years ago. The years have not diminished the power of her voice. The opposite. When she sings "Thank you..DISALUSIONMENT"....well I won't spoil it.
Dude I am in heaven here love you
Have you listened to any Supertramp yet? “Logical Song”? If not, you’ll love it!
Alanis always blows me away with her unique voice and amazingly powerful lyrics. She's in my top 5 female artists ever. That said, if you appreciate comedy, there's a parody of this song by Mad TV called "Wash Me." Mo Collins' impersonation of Alanis is accurate and hilarious.
Another Alanis comedy song would be Alanis's cover of My Humps, very slow and mournful and hilarious!
Omg I forgot about Wash Me, that was so damn funny.
I sugggest:
Reasons I Drink
Smiling (album version or live, NOT the music video)
Sympathetic Character - Woodstock 99
Rest
That I Would Be Good - MTV Unplugged
I am no expert, but my top 5 female vocalists are: Anne Wilson from Heart, I guess Adelle, I guess Celine Dion (I guess because I am not really into either of those two, but I recognize their quality) and to the side of those 3... in her own little box of HOLYFRUCK is Alanis... and I don't know who my 5th is haha, but it had to be a top 5 not top 4.
Please do All I Really Want.
Please react to Pentatonix "oh come all ye faithful". Since christmas is around the corner feel their version of this popular Christmas song really incapsulate the joy of christmas. It is very different from other covers.
I would love to hear your reaction to “All I Really Want”…it’s quite different than this song is all I will divulge…don’t want to spoil it!
Please do Perfect by Alanis. She is amazing.
Only non-jagged little pill song that I liked of hers. Jagged I liked every song though, one of the best albums ever imo and it isn't even my genre of music
Original is the word your looking for. 😁
I wish Alanis & Fiona would team up.
More nostalgia…
Please react to "Fiona Apple "
Hand in my pocket? Didn't madonna sign her to maverick or something
This song is just too short.
