Do you guys think a piece of media can ruin a character? Let’s say we have a beloved character, and a new story with them becomes so popular that it acts as the blueprint for the character going forward; and let’s say that new, mainstream version is inferior to the way they were before that character changing story. Is the character ruined? This is a question I have seen raised so many times when people talk about the Deadpool movies. Movies that are incredibly popular, and thrusted the character from a character known only to comic book fans to a character that my grandma has heard of. Many fans don’t like this interpretation of the character because too much focus is given to the humour, without the tragedy, of which the humour is attempting to avoid. Further within this subset are people who aim to prosecute not the movies for the beginning of this trend, but the 2013 Deadpool video game.
This game… is something, but let’s get it straight, this is NOT a proper story game, there is no narrative here deeper than the spandex on top of Wade's disfigured face, or at least, I’d argue that's the case. With a game like Deadpool, starring a character that is almost always aware of where they are, be that a comic, a movie, or game, there's always room to think about the game as a meta piece, with the presentation of the character being in and of itself a critique of the characters state; but we might be getting a bit ahead of ourselves. Let’s be real, most of the people who bought this game because it’s the epitome of insane fun. Deadpool is one of the funnier games I’ve played in a while. Is it a constant stream of gut busters? Not really, and when a game is hurkling punchline after punchline for five hours straight you’re bound to have a few stinkers, but there were just as many jokes that I genuinely laughed out loud at. While millennial humour is definitely the topic of choice for many of these, some of the jokes are timeless all the way from cute cutaways to a shockingly topical reference to Dr. Disrespect
Deadpool is a character that is far more popular than he was when the Deadpool game released. The Deadpool 2013 game was the first mainstream attempt at sanitising Deadpool, which would be followed up in the Deadpool movie, Deadpool 2, and eventually Deadpool 3 or officially Deadpool and Wolverine. The Deadpool PS4 game, though because it is an old Deadpool game it was released on earlier generations too, is often cited as the game that ruined Deadpool. Well, did this game ruined Deadpool? That Boy Aqua attempts to answer that question by analysing wade wilson, the mask, and the deadpool gameplay to find out. Aside from Deadpool DLC in other games, we have yet to see another deadpool game this funny. The Deadpool game gameplay is likely responsible for this, but the best deadpool game moments make this Deadpool look good years later. This is not a Deadpool review, simply a Deadpool game review. Though it will discuss the Deadpool origin, and ultimately Deadpool will be explained.

I'm 23, and when this game came out, I got it just a few years later when I got a PS4. This was my very first time ever seeing Deadpool ever. So when the movie came out a few years after that, I liked it a lot and then went back to play the game. The game has good moments, but then bad moments, but I actually like the gameplay. I feel like the movies took the best parts of the comics and games and just made it work for the movies. It's not as annoying as the games, and it feels like Deadpool is smarter than what he acts like normally, so I believe that the movies found a sweet spot, and that's why these 3 Deadpool movies are doing so well

I was at a convention recently that had Nolan North as a guest. During his Q&A he said that he was not given a script for this game the devs wanted him to ad-lib all his lines for Deadpool. He admitted if you are playing this it’s basically “Me with no filters and all of my random thoughts at the time.”

Honestly the game just feels like a vacation for deadpool, even as someone who likes the serious side of the character I don't at all think it "ruined" him. Even the most popular takes on the character (the movies) plays out the serious moments, like Wade getting the cancer diagnosis, getting revenge for being tortured, and pretty much every scene with vanessa in the second movie. I don't know man comic fans can get really really annoying about adaptations

I think it's because the general public's view of the character is that he's a walking pun and reference dispenser. People misunderstanding Deadpool is what's lead to all the copycats in recent years like what DC has tried to do with Harley Quinn and Punchline.

@@Android-Twenty-One Well-put, glad that other people saw that too. And i mean, sure, it's fair if people would prefer if the game had some darker tones. Honestly, i think that'd be a bit better. But as it currently is, it's different, and it's great for what it is. A gamey, simple game made from the perspective of a delusional, childish maniac with a notable lack of care about most things around him. And that's kinda cool imo.
I didn't even know Deadpool wasn't always like this or that fans are divided on how he's written, this game was my first exposure to him so just assumed he was always like this
To me he is bit of both. He has is serious moments but he also bit insane too. Dude has immortality (though he can die but he seduces literally death itself and gets into fights with thanos over her) i mean imagine having immortality that even if you manage to die death just brings you back whenever you want to go back you can just do whatever be free and let loose.
Back to what i am saying deadpool is like yakuza series they have their drama serious moments but they know to let loose and have fun too that life isn't always got to be full of grit and grim
They're really not divided at all, Ive never heard anyone complain about Deadpool like this, his original appearances no one thinks about or mentions because he wasn't interesting then. He was a straight up villain at first and way more serious. It was such a small time frame he was like that

It is just such a brilliant idea that he has this habit of getting close to death and is excited to meet death again.
I was initially disappointed that movie deadpool's girlfriend is an actual person, but by the end of the first movie I got over it and figured that this lovestory was actually kinda real.
That they actually then go ahead and had a new interpreted version of exactly that dilemma by having her be the entity he meets in death, that was a gutpunch I should have seen coming.

The “$100 million budget” was part of the joke because their actual budget was pretty small for a triple A game. The joke was “you blew 100 million dollars in one level and now you are stuck with this.” The actual budget was about 7 million

Similar to the venom films, people are complaining about how the characters are but they are pretty damn accurate lol. If you don’t like those versions of the characters you probably won’t like the comic version much either.

I think when people say “Deadpool is ruined” they are more upset by Ryan Reynold’s personality seeping into the character and the current state of Marvel. I like R.R as Deadpool, but I can see how people are getting tired of him and would point to this as the inception of the “annoying” Deadpool. (Which is funny given R.R’s portrayal of Deadpool isn’t far from the comics)
What people should be more upset about is Spiderman 2099 from the Spiderverse movies seeping into the comics version, Miguel wasn't always a complete edgelord.

It’s crazy how we live in a world where even casuals don’t really like Ryan Reynolds for his accurate portrayal of the comics but people can really like a water down Deadpool who has no substance and no interaction with his characters other than trying to inappropriately touch females in his own video game that’s crazy to me.

But Fall of Cybertron is the one game that I replay atleast once every year and the first game that I installed on my Deck and played through before installing literally anything else. Heck i regularly listen to the OST when doing stuff, Catacombs Guardian, Shockwaves Torture Lab, Burial Ground Fight, Hatch Fight and of course the banger Main Theme are incredible pieces of music. The game is pretty much the perfect themepark action game imo

It’s annoying how people think just because something has substance means that you can’t have fun with it or find it funny. I don’t think this game ruined Deadpool because personally for me this game was really awesome and tons of fun in my opinion.
The thing is the character was ruined because deadpool was always a deep character he made jokes just to hide how hes always in pain or hating himself and after this game we NEVER got that vesion of deadpool againg after this game from this game to today deadpool as just become a joke character hes not deep at all anymore
@@thatguyfromA6915 This is also the fault of his comics though. He has some runs that add good depth but also many runs that just forget about that depth. Those runs are what this game focused on which is fair enough. The movies are actually trying to add some seriousness to him so I don’t get how he is ruined.

False this game was my introduction to Deadpool and what solidified me as a fan.
Well I had to break it to you buddy but this game literally tells you nothing about that poor other than the general conceptuses. You still know nothing about his world or his enemies or his supporting cast which people often forget that Deadpool‘s best friend will always be weasel you also probably don’t even know if you’re supposed to have a raspy voice. If you’re a fan through this game then you’re just a fan of this game but not really Deadpool and I’m not saying this to gate keep mean like seriously this game does not represent him well it’s still a fun game but he actually doesn’t touch females inappropriately and has way more interesting lore surrounding him in his comics
Seeing Cable as a floating taco and hearing “You like tacos, Wade?” will never not be funny.
It sucks that the developers of this game after it released essentially became just a support studio for Activision, they may still be open but lets be real they aren't around anymore if you know what I mean.

I get some people don't like how the game doesn't take itself seriously and is a full on comedy action game. But with all the superhero video games out there, I think it's alright to have the one goofy game go to Deadpool.

I hate the idea that something can ruin a character. Deadpool has been around for a long time, one game and a few movies didn't ruin any of that. Maybe the stories changed a bit going forward, but so what. You still have decades to fall back on. It's like Halo. The tv show is awful, as were the last few games, but that doesn't retroactively ruin the original games made by Bungie. People that make these arguments are pathetic.
Do you not understand it's just a way to describe the problem those additions have into the series of relevent entries as a whole? They call it character assassination in literature and shifting to a bad direction is something makes an entry shit and fans of the total should bring up, unless you hate the customers saying what what a miss in a series they are invested in.
This is where you’re wrong the people who actually make the argument that substance and respecting the source material is bad and having a bad inaccurate representation is good. That’s what is a pathetic argument. This game is supposed to be a official licensed product and what would bring Deadpool into the main stream so you think that this game and at least represent him well and as far as adding substance into this game that’s not necessarily bad you can still have a overall goofy funny game and have fun with it while having substance. It doesn’t have to be 100% accurate but it also doesn’t have to be a 100% degration of the character

I have never seen Aqua's face before and I was surprised to see someone so gorgeous
About how there used to be a deeper person beneath the mask/the humour - I remember one Deadpool comic where he is on Genosha, investigating a murder that seems to make no sense because the footprints are completely disconnected with one of them on the ceiling. Everyone else is confused how this happened and Deadpool just shows them, performing an acrobatic act that perfectly matches the footprints. The scene is funny but not played for laughs as he realizes he was the one to kill the victim and he doesn't remember it or why he did it. So on one hand you have jokes and funny scenes but the topic was grim, about a man whose brain is constantly eaten by cancer to the point that he can't control himself. On Genosha he was finally somewhat accepted among the mutants but he had to leave because he realized he would always be a danger to people around him.
There was also a segment in a different comic where he sets up a perfect assassination while the X-men try to stop him (he thought he was helping) and it was shown that he often follows plans he made while somewhat cognizant without knowing the meaning behind them. It was all very funny but also tragic when you realize that there is a deeply intelligent and tactical person somewhere inside but it's held back by his constantly degrading and healing brain.
I think you're talking about Cable and Deadpool, it isn't genosha but rather an island that cable owns, which is a peaceful and diverse island, also the guy he killed was a reformed terrorist
@@Over-Packed You might be right, I do remember that the victim was not exactly innocent. To be fair, it was a bigger plot outside of the Deadpool series so I don't know anything outside of what was in the issue. I saw mutants on an island so I assumed it was Genosha.
I mean yeah he was a crazy good Canadian SF operator if I'm remembering his back story right. Deadpool is hyper lethal, but he's also just completely insane with cancer eating his body at a rate so fast that he's constantly in a state of pain and dying. Yet he still finds joy in life and that's why I fucking love him.
And then we go what you explained with some thing in a positive manner or something that had substance and that’s what this game should’ve had but he’s casual idiots are arguing saying that the game would be bad or not as good if it just focused on the substance switch that couldn’t be further from the truth

Great insight. I got a voice acting background and have to say Nolan North's voice has been such an inspiration for me since the first Uncharted. The vocal training was really tough, sometimes without noticeable results for months but actors like him are a great impulse to not give up; was almost Leon in those new RE games :) Great video.

I will give you that I think the psychology nuance of Deadpool in this game is amazing or at least pretty good and the entertainment value is through the roof with a comedy for the most part but unfortunately past that there’s literally nothing left it’s either just straight up bad bastardization or it’s just paperthin dryness

It’s not even yapping it’s actual fans versus casuals whereas the casuals think that the substance is bad and the bastardization is good we say otherwise. The game is fun but you’re literally settling yourself or less if you like this version of him because it’s a more bland version you don’t get to explore much from him and he has no interaction with his characters and as far as the females go he just literally goes for Harvey Weinstein mode so I don’t really think that’s an enjoyable version
I just think it’s easy for you to say this because you don’t know the character outside this video game
Honestly, I really enjoyed the game. It’s not a good adaptation of the character, and the combat is not that good. But the humor was good enough to keep me entertained from beginning to end.
I was also lucky enough to find a copy of the game on PS4 for €15 back in 2022. Which is a perfect price for it in my opinion.
It’s nothing extraordinary, but it is a fun ride, and it deserved better than to be delisted and (legally) lost to time

Before Deadpool came out in 2016 I was already very interested in the character, had played this game and read a lot of Deadpool comics. And I think in a lot of ways it did get lost in translation that the pathos of his character being that he was a mercenary before becoming a mutant he was tortured and Just wanted to die. Quite a lot of the runs in the comics did Lean more on the humour but I keep thinking to a particular story called the good the bad and the ugly where he finds out he had impregnated a woman who had his child and that she was interred and killed.
But he also has been a horrible asshole who tortured his friends and could be immensely selfish.
I’m glad you were actually educated in the comics they are really good and I really wish we had more representation of Deadpool in this form

This isn't the sole fault of the game. This started with Daniel Way's run and only further changed Deadpool's character from there.

My first introduction to Deadpool as a character was in X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse. I was definitely surprised by his voice lines when you first met him and was very pleasantly surprised when he was unlocked at the end. I thought he was sick af being able to teleport, regen HP, he had guns, swords, for some reason Nitrogen bombs and was shown to be a wisecracking silly guy who took up mercenary work, I loved him, I always thought the newer iterations of him were a bit odd.
I have to give you the biggest respect in this comment section for actually having that experience because realistically X-Men legends to an ultimate alliance Deadpool are the best iterations of Deadpool outside his own comics and John Kassir as Deadpool Is super criminally underrated as Deadpool and is essentially need to finish the voice of Deadpool considering Deadpool is supposed to have a raspy voice it sucks that they don’t ever have him reprise his role

None of my friends, or anyone I know personally, have played Rise of Apocalypse or Marvel Alliance, so it's always been hard to explain who Deadpool was to me in comparison to who he was to them.

I think this game is OK. I liked it more than movies (sorry Ryan, you're great). Don't forget there is also Ultimate Deadpool as the boss in "Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions" game from 2010.

I think there are two takes on Deadpool: caring about Wade Wilson, and not caring about Wade Wilson. Personally, I could not care less about Deadpool’s past. He IS the mask, and he’s a silly stupid immortal guy that I can enjoy as a side character. It’s a difference between wanting depth or being fine with something entirely superficial.

Guys as a comment down here somewhere said: This is basically Deadpool in a game he made, everything including Rogue making out with and absorbing his powers for the Rogue Deadpool sequence was basically the video game equivalent of a self insert fanfic. Its why even his D list villains are absolute babes or are modelled as smokeshows, because its a Deadpool power fantasy. In one game you meet all the hot D List villains, the hot X Women, Wolverine, Cable, Death and youre basically walking through a power fantasy with Deadpool as the writer, producer and illustrator.
So of course its gonna be campy and unimaginative, Deadpool was (speculated) basically a campy unimaginative ripoff of Slade with more cursing and a 4th wall awareness that would make Pinke Pie blush. Can you blame the man for making a game about him after his *own* image?

This game didn't ruin Deadpool, it's him in full effect that understands the overall continuity of the character that isn't aiming to focus on ciritical parts of the character (like his backstory, origin, or more serious and eventful moments).
People don't dislike the movies they did because they have humor, they dislike the movies because it took the more serious and mildly thought provoking aspect of the character and pretty much discarded it.
This game didn't do that, it is the more manic and hilarious part of the character. It doesn't accurately explain who Wade is as a person. He was a hippocrite in his origin putting off being a better man. Not bad enough to be evil, not decent enough to be good. He was aware if this and wanted to aim for ending on a high note and the worst thing possible that could have happened to him did happen to him, he becomes immortal. That is what the tragedy is built off of. I can understand people not having the taste for him acting "wacky" but it's part of his declining mental stability and desire to escape the reality he is stuck with. The same issues he had as a man being made "super" with him.
That's why this game isn't some type of decline or change. Its late into this story, its part of that continuous arc and realized development.
This is all different than the movies, selling cheapened versions of it with him just being a wacky asshole with a heart of gold. It's a significantly less complex character that comes across as confused tonally because there isn't really any good good reason for movie Deadpool to be as messed up or zany other than just choosing to act like an idiot. He's just bothered by looking ugly and annoying for the sake of it.
A heavily damaged man with signifcant problems and a heavily miserable existence making all his vices turn into manic insane coping turned into some horny slub with low self esteem.
I don't get the idea that fans have that Reynolds' version of the character mainly emphasizes the jokes.
The first Deadpool movie is about Deadpool getting cancer and trying to cope with it and being desperate enough to get involved in a program where he was tortured and ended up disfigured which lead to self esteem problems and not feeling good enough for his loved one which lead to him being on a revenge path.
Deadpool 2 is about Deadpool feeling hopeless and without purpose because of Vanessa's death and trying to cope with the pain because his suicide attempts failed. He then finds purpose in trying to help save this abused angry trauma filled boy by helping him keep his innocence and what good is left in him.
Deadpool 3 is about Deadpool trying to prove to himself that he matters and isn't worthless baggage that brings more trouble than good to everyone else around him.
I'd say the Deadpool movies are a lot more serious than people give them credit for and is a lot more serious than runs like Daniel Way's run and everything that came after it that became memepool. The tone is somewhat similar to Duggan's, Mark Waid's and Joe Kelly's takes.

People act as if this game is a harmless rendition of Deadpool when realistically it is. The game is really antithetical to his own character here. This game dosen’t need deep emotional moments, but it still should’ve had substance. It lacks that, any real interaction with the cast, no actual supporting DP characters like Weasel and Blind Al, Deadpool is a creep to his female cast, and he’s just watered down. I understand they don’t have to make it completely accurate, but they also don’t have to degrade the character either. This game definitively is the worst thing to happen to Deadpool.
Comic books aside, the character was already ruined by X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

For Daniel way, while from what I know (since I’m not too familiar with his comics) his writing does show Wades more depressed side and while I get why people will find it pretentious I think the voices in Wades head show that really well, which does add more depth to his character even though I see where the complaints come from at least on some level. The problem with this game and why people say this game specifically is cited as “killing” Deadpool is because it’s written more to be goofy than tell a story. As for the game, I personally I feel like a game that utilizes the environment more would work better for Deadpool over a typical back and slash especially Daniel Ways version, though I’m biased against a lot of hack and slash games so take what I say with a grain of salt.
