Hearing of John Prine's death wasn't a kick in the teeth or a punch in the gut. It was a shot in my heart. An explosion of grief. Prine was one of the most human of beings that I have ever 'known'. His warmth, love, and humor has always been a balm for our times. The missing might be unbearable.
Feeling was the same here. I knew he was hospitalized, then a few days later, I myself was unexpectedly hospitalized. I didn't know it, but my gallbladder had gone to the dark side, and was trying to kill me for years. 2wks ago it decided to finish me off. It inflamed my pancreas and liver. After days of test it was confirmed the gallbladder was the culprit, and a relatively routine surgery set off a domino recovery, all other organs immediately reversed course and returned to healthy function. The morning after surgery, I woke early, and decided I had to know if Prine had made it too, or was at least still hanging on. Sadly, no, he had passed on 8-12hrs earlier. We passed each other in opposite directions. I'm still crying, days later. After a good cry, I started playing his music, nonstop, into the open air, and I still am. I've made several new converts to the gospel of Prine!

This is when I became a fan of John Prine, actually about 1978, 79. So many good memories of seeing John Prine in concert over the years, listening to his vinyl albums, which I still have today. When I moved from SC to NM in 2002 on my way I wasn't able to pick up a radio station for miles somewhere around OK and TX. No music. I started singing John Prine songs to my little dacschund for about 3 hours. She was entranced and wasn't so bored. Neither was I, by the way. Sadly, my little Lucy passed away in 2016. John Prine has been a part of my life for over 40 years and still will be. There are so many of his songs that resonated from way back and are still meaningful now and I'm sure for generations to come. Can't even tell you how much of an impact he has had on my children who are in their mid to late 40s even now.
John is the mailman in our neighborhood, only with this huge talent. That is why we identify with him so easily. He is one of us, and we only see that he's a genius when he picks up a guitar and starts to sing. He wrote about our lives, and his music was like giving his guitar a voice to sing along.
Rest in peace John Prine. You surely did not waste the musical talent that God blessed you with. You put it to good use. And thanks for sharing your songs and your life with all of us. You'll be making people smile as long as time lasts.
Goodbye, Handsome Johnny. Walking out of one of your shows in Ann Arbor about 15 years ago, I heard someone say, "His songs are so sad. I intruded and said, "His songs are so human. Same thing."
First encounter with John Prine ? As a janitor cleaning up his dressing room at O' Shaugnessy Concert Hall ...St Catherines College St Paul 1978 ..not your Orchestra..Opera...leftover fare !! Rock on John ! RIP ...
John Prine"s music is a reflection of life. He touches on emotions that brings tears and smiles at the same time. Very few songwriters are as relatable. We are so lucky to have had him.
I first heard of John Prine the day he died. I know now what I've been missing. Rest in peace sweet man. I'll continue to love your music until it's my turn.

THANK YOU for posting this wonderful video! This was a TERRIBLE year and we lost many treasures, chief among them was the death of John Prine, a true American musical treasure who has brought light, beauty, humor, and truth to the lives of millions with his talent. RIP John Prine! We will never see another like you, but you left us all of your music which will continue to give us joy.
I've been spending all evening watching John Prine at Strombo and this video. I'm not familiar with most of his stuff, but it's fabulous. Now I know why so many people love the guy. What a talent he was.
Today our country(USA) is in the midst of confrontations on all levels. A friend said last week, "I fear we're heading for a revolution." I didn't see it coming. Today, I do. Then I went to RUclips and found this wonderful 50 minute video of John Prine. Listening to his beautiful lyrics capturing the essence of the human experiences, I am calm. Thankfully, I can find a peaceful respite with John's music. Miss him so much, and oh, so grateful for his music that will live on for posterity.
Blessed to know of this guy and all the superior musicianship and songwriting surrounding him. Awesome American realness and truth. Thanx J.P. enjoy the cigarette 9 miles long 8))
The wonderfully unique and talented John Prine was a gift from God this is an inspirational glimpse into his music and personality which brightened Our Lives for All Too Short a Time. We never could get enough of this wonderful fellow. Rest in peace from Patrick
I saw him 4yrs later in Ft. Collins..1984ish…his hair was shorter and he looked healthier, just him no band… front row seats… best concert I ever been to, he can make you laugh n cry within the same song. 🙂🙏🏼🇺🇸👊🏼
I was in rock and blues biz in the 80s ,,i was a sessions man loaned out by Bobby Helms , I lived 7 miles from Bobby,,met John too he was a nice guy to me , RIP John buddy ,, I now live in Mississippi ,,,aka Keith J.
The best version of Angel of Montgomery ever! This whole video is essential for any John Prine fan. He was definitely very entertaining and at the top of his game. Gotta say, John was a hottie back in the day. I work security, since the corna has shut concerts down I sit at home and watch RUclips shows. John’s show at the Oregon Zoo, last of the season, was the last concert I worked security for. Ended on a special run for the year. Thanks John 🎶💔🎶💔
I was introduced to John in September, 1977. 'Had just turned 18 and was a freshman in college. The Student Union was hosting a series of free outdoor concerts on its "quad". A warm Saturday afternoon where a good time was had by all. Six months later a local coffee shop hosted him for a 50-cent cover charge. This show was a solo performance with acoustic guitar; quite intimate. A year later, the shop had him back, but, with a $2.00 charge ... too expensive for me, but, in hindsight, probably quite reasonable. I'm left with good feelings with joy and hope in my heart. Rest peacefully, John.
Jimmy B I did the math with an inflation calculator and $2 in 1977 is $8.52 in 2020. Not as a judgement about your income or how you choose to spend it but $8.52 today is literally a soda at a movie. People routinely paid $70-$100 to see him in similar venues for over 20 years.
@@emzyking5847 In 1977, $2 was an hours work. John was pretty much just another guy with a guitar at that time (and there were bunches of them performing at bars, cafes, parks, etc. at the time. I think I paid $4 to see Melissa Manchester about the same time frame, and she was famous. She'd been on The Midnight Special and everything. I was introduced to John's music about the same time by one of my English professors. I heard "Illegal Smile" and I was hooked. I wouldn't judge Jimmy B for not dishing out the $2. Hindsight is always 20/20. I went to so many of his concerts over the years that I lost count. The most I paid was $70 for front row, center seats. Every concert was wonderful and unique but that one was extra special and my daughter came away with his guitar pick. John's music was a treasure and he will be sorely missed. Hope he and Steve Goodman are jamming together and John's smoking that 9 mile long cigarette and drinking beer (or vodka and ginger ale).
Our last chance to see John Prine was Rockland County NY in summer of 2019. Concert was a canceled due to thunderstorms 😕. Missed seeing him in person, but he's in our cars everyday 😢
I heard Prine say he got an unexpected job at a club after singing Sam Stone so he had to go write several more songs. The song about the car accident reminded me of that.
Am so VERY glad that someone had the idea to film all of this footage...YES Film...In this age of camera phones we take such a thing for granted...John was such a incredible talent and truly a gift to all who came to love and appreciate him...his memory will live on even after all of us are gone...and those who are lucky enough can join him for a vodka and ginger ale and listen to some old favorites played by the rock n roll band he said he would start...on the other side of the pearly gates
I was introduced to John in 1973 , saw him at the Troubadour in L.A. It was a wonderful solo performance, left a mark on me as much as the many times I saw him after that. Funny thing is that almost all the people I introduced to his music have called me and thanked me for doing so and it breaks my heart all over again. Thank you for this footage. R.I.P John
I saw him for the first time at Summerfest in Milwaukee circa 1980. We saw him last 5/25/19 at the Overture Center in Madison, WI. Thanks for all the memories. You are greatly missed.
Seen more than a few shows in my life, some big, some small by some great and some not so great. No show was comparable to seeing a John Prine Show. His audiences loved him,and he loved them right back.
I tried but never could catch John at The Earl back in the very early days in Chicago. My timing was always off then. But I caught a few others from those great days - Johnathan Round, Jim Post and a few others for those who remember. And here I am today. My heart is so broken I can't even cry - YET. I saw a lot of Soundstage concerts on WTTW but this was always one of the best. For those of you new to the magic of John Prine welcome. Now sit back and listen to the greatness of a humble man. The last song says it all - How Lucky. Indeed, how lucky we all were to have been here during your time on earth. God bless you John. And now I can weep.
When I was growing up n the country, the man here n his music brought me n my friends,so many great memories. This 1980 music kept us entertained n out of trouble many nights. I bowed my head n cried the day John Prine died. I tell ya that a part of me passed with him.... First JP album I heard was Bruised Orange...I was hooked....bought up every CD I could find, and they are highly treasured here. Thanks for the music John, God love ya.
My brother Jerry and I were at this tapping at the WTTW studio in 1980. Halfway through the taping, a fire broke out on one of the lights near the back of the stage, and the studio started filling up with smoke. The taping was halted for about 30 minutes while the fire was put out and the smoke cleared. John wasn't phased by the incident at all. That night, John was being backed up by the "Famous Potatoes"who's lead guitar player was John Burns, son of the great mandolin player Jethro Burns.
I just discovered John Prines music after his passing , sad for me . it took me awhile but I figured out WHY he was so incredible ...... Hey was humble .

He is one of us, and we only see that he's a genius when he picks up a guitar and starts to sing. He wrote about our lives, and his music was like giving his guitar a voice to sing along.
Few artists put as much thought into their lyrics as Prine did. What a talent.
The last time I saw John was at the Boomer theater in Norman Oklahoma so I shared this with my old buddies of fifty years that were mostly there.🤗
68 years years old. Just discovered JP. Wasted many years of my life not experiencing his talent. Now he's gone...I have some catching up to do.
Same thing."
love John Prine💙 and especially the beautiful song hello in there, 💙
First encounter with John Prine ? As a janitor cleaning up his dressing room at O' Shaugnessy Concert Hall ...St Catherines College St Paul 1978 ..not your Orchestra..Opera...leftover fare !! Rock on John ! RIP ...
Greatest live performance ever
John Prine"s music is a reflection of life. He touches on emotions that brings tears and smiles at the same time. Very few songwriters are as relatable. We are so lucky to have had him.
I first heard of John Prine the day he died. I know now what I've been missing. Rest in peace sweet man. I'll continue to love your music until it's my turn.

This is pure joy. I wish he was still with us.
This is fucking unbelievable, thanks for posting, I'll be going back to this one regularly until Mr Peabody's coal train hauls me away.
I've been spending all evening watching John Prine at Strombo and this video. I'm not familiar with most of his stuff, but it's fabulous. Now I know why so many people love the guy. What a talent he was.
Strombo with Prine. Impeccable taste dear sir.
I saw him first in around 2008. A very different show, and very different time in his life. I can say the same for me.
This is the show that introduced me to John Prine. I'm very thankful
I must say, the piano player is freakin awesome...
Bob Hoban
Such a deeply felt personal loss over here, stings like Garcia, Lennon and Zevon.
right on
I saw him 4yrs later in Ft. Collins..1984ish…his hair was shorter and he looked healthier, just him no band… front row seats… best concert I ever been to, he can make you laugh n cry within the same song. 🙂🙏🏼🇺🇸👊🏼
John Burns. Haven't seen or heard of him since the 80's. That man can play. He was everywhere back then.
I was in rock and blues biz in the 80s ,,i was a sessions man loaned out by Bobby Helms , I lived 7 miles from Bobby,,met John too he was a nice guy to me , RIP John buddy ,, I now live in Mississippi ,,,aka Keith J.
Arlo knows me too
can i like this a million times?
Prine had a songwriting mind like no other. He will be missed.
rip prine and about time too not a hint of quality
I remember soundstage & austin city limits used to have the best musicians which you would never see or hear otherwise...pbs long time ago
How lucky can one man get. What a song.
John & I were ushers in a wedding back in 1979 & were very close up until his passing in 2020
The best version of Angel of Montgomery ever!
Lovely memory ~
Thanks for posting.

Saw at the end was recorded by PBS....Thank You Public Broadcasting
so handsome and endearing.. he was truly a brilliant lyricist and human being 🖤 missed by many
so sad that he is no longer with us..... we just love him.......
R.I.P John
The last great western swing performer, and arguably the best. I hadn't listened to him since the mid-eighties. Refreshing.
I saw him for the first time at Summerfest in Milwaukee circa 1980. We saw him last 5/25/19 at the Overture Center in Madison, WI. Thanks for all the memories. You are greatly missed.
Great song writer. Had a way with words.
Why oh why didn't I discover this great Man sooner😟
What a wonderful film to see this morning. My kind of fun music and he played my all time fave Paradise.
Seen more than a few shows in my life, some big, some small by some great and some not so great. No show was comparable to seeing a John Prine Show. His audiences loved him,and he loved them right back.
I've got my own 51 Ford I love to remember John driving through Maywood in his.
I have this on DVD Love it
I'll always miss John 😎
You know ... I had that Pink Cadillac record and played it till I knew every song by heart ... till I could play all the parts too !
Missing John in this world on this Sunday afternoon.
When I was growing up n the country, the man here n his music brought me n my friends,so many great memories. This 1980 music kept us entertained n out of trouble many nights. I bowed my head n cried the day John Prine died. I tell ya that a part of me passed with him.... I had the wonderful pleasure of hearing him sing out in the rain , I believe it was Opryland....when I was young....May your songs entertain our Father in which you reside.... Thank you sir for all the smiles and tears you gave us all. ..#fans til the end...Peggy,Rocky,Jeff n 👎
.
I wish I could have seen John in concert, I love his music. John, Rest In Peace.
His music has been a part of my life since the ‘70s, and was blessed to finally see him at a local venue in 2019.
Ubangi Stomp played by John Prine, never expected that!
Was 15 and my first outdoor concert at sweet briar college in va( all female at the time mind you)👅.
Never forget . Rip John prine. Thank you for life and soul
First JP album I heard was Bruised Orange...I was hooked....bought up every CD I could find, and they are highly treasured here. Thanks for the music John, God love ya.
Wish I could find tickets 4 his next tour we all miss him badly.
I'm so thankful he was.
R.I.P. John, nice job on an old Foghat song, Ubangi Stomp
I absolutely love John 's stratacaster-rockabilly phase ❣
Beyond incredible performance! So raw, genuine and real! Barely anyone like that today.
Tyler's cut from the same cloth.
Ubangi Stomp...what a trip. Rockin' John. Thanks for this. He's such a wonderful person then, now ,forever.
Please post.
Wish I was there.
Always did love that guitar lick from, 'Automobile'. John Prine...a genius, on par with Dylan, Lennon, and Willie. Rest in peace friend.
I just discovered John Prines music after his passing , sad for me . it took me awhile but I figured out WHY he was so incredible ...... Hey was humble .
While there was no pretence to his music there was a brilliance. R.I.P john !!
ET2 Wainright you gave me Prine's Prime cassette, and I thank you greatly. Mr Prine wether seeing you perform live or listening alone, brought joy to my heart. RIP!!!
John Prine was an amazing talent and interesting human being. I directed this television Soundstage show from Chicago. RIP John.
John Prine & Allen Watts save my life daily. Thanks for being!
