Guy was a killer writer and musician. But what I find marvelous about this performance is Verlon's mastery of the role of "side-man". It's a hard to have the ability to out play the front man, but instead layback and make him sound a good as you possible can. Guy is great by himself, but Verlon's picking adds to the performance without ever taking the spotlight when Guy doesn't want it. In Guy's later years Verlon stood by him and continued to do everything he could to make Guy sound his best. Verlon if a hero.

Rel class Musicians side people are bored
To make you sound better where would McCartney b e without lennon or vice versa, two front guys who took side steps to each others songs to make them come out better like yesterday, not really a Beatle song ,but sure still makes lennon McCartney aton of money the whole band let McCartney go with that and it was the right move ,'xbiggest song in music history,

@robert flagg You make a very good point. But I was thinking of Verlon in the role of "side-man". I never saw Lennon in a supporting role for McCartney, or vice-a-versa. They were both showed genius in their own right.
My thought was Mr. Thompson is better as a picker but never overshowed Guy when it wasn't appropriate. If you watch ruclips.net/video/tSjhhJzRwHE/видео.html you'll Verlon say Guy let him play by himself to promote him as a musician and song writer. I never thought of Lennon & McCartney relationship.

I think a second acoustic guitar really fills out the sound. Jim Croce had the same set up with Maury Mueheisen.

Verlon Thompson was always this good. His playing may have been obsurred by the the campfire's smoke but it carried the poet's words upward to heaven.

Amazing. Thank you, Great Spirit, Thank you Guy Clark. John Prine is your brother in Heaven, He's pipkin tunes with you, and Ramblin Jack, and all those others. Those Carters had something to do with it all. Al right Vernon, on 4....

I'm just seeing this for the first time.
It just fills me with joy, love and pain.
I spent a lot of hours and days traveling to and sitting In front of Guy, filling my soul with his magic.
I love the love he shares with his musical brothers, and I loved how he got tickled telling his stories. Most of all I loved his poetry.
Now, you'll think I'm lying but it's the truth! I shared Nachos and drank Mad dog margaritas with him at the Chili parlor bar in Austin one night.
I helped do a Texas cooking party for him after a weekend event in Ann Arbor. I was cooking fried okra when he got there. He made a beeline to the stove where I was cooking and grabbed a sample and said my God, it's as good as my grandmas!
I lived in Monahans TX when he lived with his grandma at her hotel, across the street. I was 4, he was 6 years older.
One day some big boys tied me to a tree that was crawling with stinkbugs and terrified me! I told him the story when he and I were in our 50s. And he said, i think that was me, I seem to remember that day! I miss him so much, but the music lives on. I Love you Guy!

I met Guy Clark in 1966 when he was playing at a the Sand Mountain Coffeehouse on Richmond Street in Houston, Texas. I was with a group of kids from high school, and several very pretty girls, and I think Guy came over to meet the girls. We were very impressed to actually get to talk to the performer and he was really nice to us, considering we were all about 15 or 16 years old. Years later, in my early 20s, I was roommates with the singer/songwriter Eric Taylor, and we lived a few doors down Stratford street from Guy and his wife Susanna. During those years, none of them had "hit it big" yet. They were all just local musicians. Eric and I did our drinking at the Family Hand Café, the Anderson-Fair Retail restaurant and the Old Quarter Bar downtown. I met Townes Van Zandt at the Old Quarter--he and Guy Clark were great friends. I miss those years a lot. I was never musically inclined, so I was always kind of on the fringes of that group. I was a hitchhiker and a trainhopper, and spent a lot of time gone on the road. Eventually Eric and I drifted apart. Eric married Nanci Griffith (I had such a huge crush on Nanci, but she was married to my best friend--gotta be a song in that situation somewhere) and I enlisted in the Marines. I saw Eric a couple of times when we were in our 30s, but by then the magic was gone. We were totally different paths.

There was some sound issue, Guy unplugged his guitar and stood 4 feet from me, and sang Randall Knife, swear he sang it to me, changed my soul......... forever....... Amazing to see these two play together......

Just another night at an intimate bar I used to frequent in the next town. My town was dry so we had to drive for about 30 minutes to the next town for entertainment.
November 23 1991 was a great night. We got there early enough to sit on the big ole church pew.
Townes Van Zandt, Robert Earl Keen Jr. and my hero, Guy Clark entertained us all night! What a night!
I feel so fortunate to have been there that night.
    I’ll never forget it.

when Guy decided to present his music in an ensemble format, he tapped Peter Gorsich (bass) and me. We played gigs in Houston, where Guy lived at the time. He had only a handful of tunes at the time, so it didn't take long to get 'em tight. We had lots of fun then...no pressure either. Just meet at the club, hit, and split. I remember it fondly. It was 1969.

We had a modern sound and folks seemed to dig it. I remember one night i looked up at Guy and there were tears streaming down his cheeks. It alarmed me, and I said, 'What's wrong?' Guy smiled and said, 'It's
just so beautiful.' I believe at that moment that he kind of saw his future laid out for him, and it was a lovely picture.

Guy Clark wasn't so much a songwriter as a poet who set words to melodies rooted in the soil of Texas watered by cheap whiskey and lies to impress the girls. He was a storyteller in the tradition of Faulkner, Flannery, Welty and McMurtry. He spoke of life's simple enduring pleasures. He kept the wolf away from the door.

I was lucky to meet Guy on a few occasions, Beginning in Austin in the late 70s and in Dallas in the mid 80s and along with Townes at a restaurant in Pennsylvania where we drank Vodka and played pool for a couple hours. I first heard Guy's tunes when another Texan came along and was playing his songs.. I thought that dude wrote them, he didn't tell me he didn't.... But then I heard Guy's album. Sometime around 74 or 75... Blew me away. And did for the next nearly 50 years. Nice to sit back and listen to this. It was these tunes that made me learn to play guitar in a similar style at the time. Played all his songs most of my life... RIP Guy Clark

Verlin complimented him just as should. I don’t think he was a better guitar player.

I love how the artists from my era dressed for performances. Crisp button ups or pearlsnaps, Sunday jeans polished boots and buckles. Merle in a suit. Now they dress like homeless people or like they pulled from the dirty clothes. Especially for indoor concerts. Is it really that hard ?
