    I picked up an opinel no. 8 knife to try out. I don’t like the small round handle, or that the tip of the blade is very high off the average center of the knife. I filed the tip down to more of a drop point so that the point is more in line with the force resulting from pushing the knife into things. The handle needed material added, so I tried using some casein glue, a waterproof, or at least very water resistant glue made with milk protein and an alkali, like lime or borax. I used the glue to make a sort of paper mache’ with oak wood shaving from my block plane.

    This video has the largest dislike to like ratio of any video I have ha ha. Two and a half years later, my poorly executed cheese glue laminate is still holding, and I still think these are the two most important mods to this knife. Before I modified the tip, I literally didn't even like cleaning my fingernails with it. Your mileage may vary, but that is because you are wrong ;). The few people that bother to leave negative comments seem concerned about the appearance. Are you f'ing kidding? The internet has created a culture of skill-less, gear obsessed, butt hurt fanboys. Go to your day job to make enough to buy homeowners insurance to cover your still-in-the-box 100th anniversary Liberace edition gold plated opinel, and unopened star trek doll collection, you gearhead bi'ches :D

      I want to see a 2 year update/review video/final thoughts on the Opinel! Personally I love the idea I modify mine as well especially getting rid of the trailing point and flattening the sides of the handle so it can’t twist in the hand.

      Hi. My name is Joe, from Sweden. Since Im from Sweden; fleamarket hunting for axes is a grateful task. Ive just discovered the hobby of restoring/refurbishing/renovating tools in general because of the fun, education and the kickass tools you end up with. A couple of things...First, Im sorry this video got so much "hate"... I thought it was very clever and came to ask if you could elaborate on the lime aspect and cheese to lime ratio. Second. I have found a slightly weird axe, and I was wondering about its shape/pattern. What edge/bevel to put on it and what lind of handle I should go with. Its a "Westergötland" pattern from either Hults Bruk or Säter. So its no homemade, custom backyard modded thing. 1.6 kg head, 13mm edge.Most likely from 1890-1900. Unfortunately no stampings or markings survived even though I started restoring gently in order to find some.

      @@easterriot1916 Hi Joe. I bet the flea markets are great there. that looks like a really cool pattern. I like the basic, slightly curved, 28 inch boy's axe handles. most axes in that weight are put on longer handles, but I think you'll probably find more use for it on a 28 inch or thereabouts. If you are over 6 feet, maybe up to 30 inches. As to edge, you can watch my vid filing the husqvarna forest axe for how I do almost all of them. Or check out Ben Scott's channel or the cordwood challenge group. Have fun and stay safe :)

      I was thinking the same thing. The Opinel Jardin is pretty much a drop point N°8 with a different handle, which is pretty close to that of Opinel's Slim Line. You could've just bought that model, but where's the fun in that? Modding is good fun and you'll end up with a personalized knife.
      I think you'll find the blade geometry very useful on the homstead; a good beater knife that will cut and is easily sharpened when dull. I have a N°12 as a loaner knife for when I go to picknicks or other such events. Any abuse the other attendees managed to put the knife through was undone in mere minutes.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  6 лет назад

      I took a look at it. I think I like this handle overall a little better and the garden knife seems also to still have a round handle, though maybe slightly larger?. Filing this tip took only three minutes, so that's not a big deal. I think white glue would probably work just as well for this, making a build up even faster as long as wood shavings are available and those can be made probably even better ones with the back of the knife itself as I show in the follow up. Maybe I'll pick one up sometime though, just for content's sake and compare. thanks.

    I’ve been using the same opinel for over 20 years and the only thing I can agree on is the tip shape. The slit in the handle works good for orientation. This is a small knife not a heavy axe. The round handle has never given me issues with grip. My handle is saturated with linseed oil and has a beautiful finish with a grippy texture. The tip is great for push cuts but it’s honestly pretty bad for any other carving task which is why I also filed the blade tip down. Regardless, these things last forever and super easy to sharpen and you can get them WICKED sharp.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  8 месяцев назад

      if it works for you it works. I like a lot more tactile information about what is up or down, so orientation is usually completely unconscious. I really don't get the round handle at all in terms of designing from scratch, I can't see any advantage and even if the advantages of an oval handle seem small, they are still valid. If you were designing a handle from scratch would you make it round? and why? I'm just not getting that. but I wouldn;t argue with you about moding it or not.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  6 лет назад

      Yes, much better for sure. I'm tempted to scrape the sides a little flat, but I don't want to lose any diameter/bulk on the handle. I think you could add the hump on top with wood glue and shavings probably. Worst that could happen is it will fall off.

    • @tidge879
      @tidge879 6 лет назад

      To be honest, I have teeny tiny little hands. So I don't think that I need to add anymore body to the handle. I do want to give cheese glue a try though!

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  6 лет назад

      You could also just flattent the sides off a little and see if that makes it too small, then add more on top if it needs it. Someone commented to boil the cheese less. I think that's a good idea. I boiled it long and hard and it didn't want to dissolve like it usually does. You can also just use nonfat cottage cheese.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  6 лет назад

      I actually didn't like that about it specifically, but,that's probably because my original leather cutting knife that I made is straight, with a sharp point and I use the point to cut. Now I use a head knife more than that one, but I remember cutting some leather along a straight edge with the opinel when I first got it and being annoyed that it was awkward to use the tip. Ditto for paper. Being a fan of head knives though, I understand what you mean.

  • @Jason-jd1jv
    @Jason-jd1jv 5 лет назад

    One reason for the blade shape, as you mentioned, is for light skinning jobs, but it's also useful for push cuts. When doing fine work it's handy to be able to push the tip into a notch or something and the blade shape helps with that. These knives are made for light use, things like light carving, whittling, fine shaving on small wood projects, etc. They aren't meant to be used like a tactical fixed blade. For some people the round handle isn't comfortable but for me it's quite comfortable. I can index the blade simply by feel using the notch that the blade fits in as well as the swell at the end of the handle. I've never had a problem with mine rotating in my hand but I don't use mine for heavy duty tasks. I have other knives that I use for that. As far as your modifications go, I like the way you think. Make that knife your own and do what you want to make it fit you. I don't modify most of my knives simply because I don't buy ones that I would have to modify. I do have a few that people gave me that aren't a good fit for me and after watching this, I might modify them just for fun. Great job friend. I really like what you've done here.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  5 лет назад

      I don't find that blade shape all that useful in skinning personally, but I have a technique that I use that partly replaces the way people use big bellied knives in skinning. One of the reasons that I didn't like it is that it makes it very hard to work with the tip going any kind of fine work. Any tip task I can think of is worse with the original tip, but maybe I don't understand what you mean. I can certainly index the knife, but it's completely natural and automatic with the new shape. Aside from being very slightly smaller, I really don't understand the choice of the round shape. Maybe it saves a little wood too. Thanks for the comment.

    It might be knife butchery but I often cut the point off altogether making a kind of sheepsfoot. It works great for field dressing deer. The point was often hard to sharpen back in the day and would not take an edge like the rest of the knife but they seem to have solved that now.

    • @SkillCult

      If the point of the knife is to serve us, we should modify it to that end. At this price point especially, I don't see any reason not to modify it except if someone didn't know what they want from it. I can think of literally nothing that I do with a knife that I wold prefer the stock shape of that tip and several general ways of using the knife where it's much better modified. I don't think that sort of clipped off configuration would serve me that well for versatile use, but I do like them for some tasks.

THAT HANDLE WAS UNUSABLE! Totally round and not so much as that little "fish tale" to help it. I gave it away to the first person I saw. I'll be curious what your take on sharpening it will be. I have an unusually hard time putting a good edge on mine and haven't figure out why yet. I didn't prefer this one as it comes from the factory, that is different than not wanting it at all. I rarely want any cutting tool exactly as it comes and figured I would either modify this or get rid of it. The blade mod is literally a couple minutes and the handle would be pretty fast if I just used white glue, or epoxy and sawdust maybe. I realize that picking up any tool to make mods is too much for some people, but for those that are willing, these are very easy mods If there is a better knife out there requiring no mods or fewer, or with higher potential, that can be got for 15.00 or less but serves similarly or better, I'd like to hear about it, but it doesn't seem likely. Like Mora knives, the price point is part of why these have become and remained popular.

      SkillCult yeah I get it, and the wood shaving paper mache came out really nice. I'm just not sure, as good as the opinel is, if it's worth any trouble modding. Then again I can afford more than one knife and I use my opinel in a role where the problems you have with it aren't issues (it's my go to picnic/lunch knife), so for me it's perfect as is.

    I think they are great. I have had friends who have been searched by the police in Britain. They are outdoor fans like myself. They aren’t seen as lock knives by the police from my experience. So the very short blade length legally enforced here doesn’t apply. Only owned the carbon blade ones and they are soft metal and are easy to put a fresh edge on with any flat stone. I’m a butcher by trade and have used an opinel to skin and breakdown a small mammal. They work as good as our boning knives. They just have a much thinner blade so you have to treat them a little more gently.

      It's not a bad skinning knife, except the joint gets and gunked up and water swells it. I think it's a good knife for beginners, but because it is cheap and you can learn the limits of a blade for cheap by bending or breaking it. thanks for commenting.

    about chesse/milk glue: you shouldn't heat it over 39-40°C since it will damage the proteins making the glue weaker
    if you work with skim milk use just enough vinegar and heat it to form curds
    if you work with cheese cut it finely and have patience
    that is if you need a strong glue

    Eeeer... this is weird Steven, I was eating smoked sheep cheese cut seconds before with my number 8 carbon Opinel when I entered RUclips and saw this video...
    The weird point and part of the design of the handle is made to use it as a meal knife (did I say it correctly?). Time ago was not uncommon to see people using Opinel type knifes in the restaurants.
    By the way, I love Opinel type knives. Thin geometry make them much better cutters than other high end knives. My Opinel has taken the place of my high end knives like the Fallkniven PXL.
    Let's see how does the experiment end. Heldu goiei!

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  6 лет назад +1

      I favor thinner knives too as I say in the follow up. Actually, that blog you posted on axe geometry had an article on using thin sharp knives that I thought was great. I've used exactly the same argument he does, that historic knives with which pioneers, farmers, fur trappers and Indians got by just fine were nothing like the thick overbuilt stuff people favor today "just in case" they have to stab zombies, scale cliffs, beat the blade to death a baton or accidentally have it run over by a tank. Not to say there aren't advantages to those, but I fear that sometimes the user experience and other functionalities of daily use are lost for fear of some kind of worst case scenario. I'm quite a bit more interested in what I can do with the tip of a knife, how it handles in skinning, cutting carrots or doing versatile fine woodwork than whether it will withstand being beaten with a heavy stick or how well it will stab someone. Also, what it's like in my pocket, which is one of two great advantages of this knife, the light weight. I'm not sure why the round handle is an advantage anywhere except in manufacture on a lathe. Weight added for a small oval will be insignificant and make it a much better multipurpose knife. I don't think Opinel is as popular here, but they are not totally uncommon either.

    • @jonugalde1275
      @jonugalde1275 6 лет назад

      Don't understand me wrong, I'm not talking about any advantage of round handles. I think the same as you, I think the way you are modifying your knife its the correct one and it wouldn't be difficult to boost the design with little investment in production time and money.
      What I'm talking about in my anterior message is the butt of the handle, both the tip and the butt are somehow oriented to use the knife as a meal knife. I find both detrimental for the use I give to my knife too.
      I agree you in the knife philosophy too, my thinking is a good folding knife is a tool you can wear everywere and only notice when you need to cut something.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  6 лет назад

      Amen. I'd like to see them implement a more functional all purpose carry model that would not cost them much if anything in production effort or material. It could be good for kids and beginners, because it is cheap to replace. Also, there are lessons to be learned using a somewhat delicate knife I think.

    Like you, I don't care for the spear point blade, nor the fish tails on the handle. Easy enough yo fix - I also filed down the blade to a drop point design and sanded down the fish tails.
    Unlike you, however, I find the round handles on my # 8 very, very comfortable to hold and work with; in fact, more comfortable than any of my flat scaled folders, and though you didn't mention it, I don't care for carbon steel blades as they leave a bitter aftertaste on the food I cut with it. I find the Inox, stainless steel version much nicer to maintain, and with such a thin blade, , to sharpen.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  6 лет назад

      Thanks for weighing in. Stainless sounds nice as long as it's not more brittle. Flat handled knives are awful. I don't think I own any, or not that I use much at least. I found the round handle very annoying and even the little I added does fill the hand a little better. I'd like even a little more bulk and more oval. The fish tail got in my way and I knocked it off. I don't mind the underpart so far, but I don't get the top flare.

I always have multiple around so between the opinels, moras, slipjoints and whatever else I usually have something that works for whatever I'm doing in the moment, even if I'm going back and forth between blades to make different cuts.
      My only caution of the opinel as a work knife is just how thin the blade is. I don't use it for much heavy use but the heavy use I did put it through easily bent tips and my opinel now has a slight warp from the base to the tip. Doesn't really effect the use that much but if I had put it through harder use it may not turn out as well.
      All in all I find opinels, like moras and old hickories to be well worth their money when you're using them within their limitations. Affordable and reliable products that are easy to modify to however you like for whatever you need.

    That blade design is also known as a pocket butchers knife. The bump on the back let’s you rock the blade when gutting or cutting the skin ( like when making the money cut on a hide) and keeps the point out of the guts or meat. It works In conjunction with the sweeping tip. The rounded handle lets you work for hours without getting hand cramps and way more comfortably. ( think 6-8 hours) You use the end shape and blade channel to index when it is open and the blade back when it is closed. You might try learning the whys where fore’s and history of something before criticizing. It it doesn’t work for you by all means change it but don’t trash talk something you obviously don’t understand.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  Год назад +1

      One of the things I don't like about it is that the tip dives too far down when making opening and gutting cuts in skinning. I've skinned hundreds of deer alone, let alone whatever other animals. In actual skinning, I tend to preach against flaying knives, with long belly sweeps like that. They are more useful for skinning some hide bound animals like hogs and racoons, but even those, I tend to favor a method that I came up with, in which an upswept tip is again, a detriment. If the hide is not being saved, then sweeping cuts are fast and easy and a long sweep is helpful. As a multi use knife that design makes a bunch of things I do with a knife, including in my skinning, tanning and leatherwork, difficult and annoying, whether it is carving with the knife tip, stabbing holes, slicing leather or cleaning my nails. A round handle is not what I would choose to avoid hand fatigue. Especially not a small one. If you squeeze a lump of dough or clay with your hand, it will not come out round. Very few handles are round and I think that is for good reason I personally prefer an oval cross section, tapered toward both ends. The stock opinel handle is uncomfortable and too small, and not as easy as it could be to index. But who is a guy that has been skinning, tanning and doing all kinds of knife work in a lifestyle setting for decades to question the choices of one french knife maker?

      I have some quality skinning knives and 100% are drop-point.. anyone worth his salt doesn't need the knife to do the job of avoiding guts, it needs to cut good and withstand bumping bone, potentially. A drop point with index finger out to the tip is far superior than this tip design, imo. It also has the benefit of being stronger due to the extra mass behind the tip. I picked up this tip from some back country hunters who process enough wild game to feed a family of 4 and keep freezers loaded year-round, and 100% of them use drop point blades..
      Everything you said is some bs thought up by the marketing department, imo.
      The rounded handle does not do what you say - to keep the angle of the blade right, you have to grip a round grip tighter, thus, greater propensity to cause cramping......
      You might try ditching the pretentious know-it-all attitude due to your online research considering you clearly lack relevant real-world experience of any significant amount.

I'm honestly kind of dumbfounded at how picky you are with what is ultimately a $10-$20 knife for basic EDC use. The critiques of shape and form seem to be theoretical and simply vanish if you just use it for a bit. We're not cutting tatami mats or chopping through trees here lol, edge alignment is not as deal breaking as you seem to think it is imo. It's works for woodcarving just fine in my experience, it's actually really slicy. Plus the last third of the handle is actually oval, so I can't relate to the conclusion that it spins in your hands too much. And I'm at a loss of words when you say that clip point blades are so bad you wouldn't even clean your nails with them. I don't know man, the whole premise of the video just comes off as unexperienced nay saying. But interesting glue though, never heard of cheese being used before. I'm always surprised how hard people will argue against modifications and fine tuning of tools. I find it completely bizarre. Arguing your preferences is one thing, but arguing against someone else customizing to their needs I don't get at all. Nor do I get why people don't modify tools more, as if there is some virtue in either finding just the right tool, or using them as is. The point mod was what, two minutes? I timed it, I don't remember, but not more than 3 min. I don't like the stock tip, period. I literally tried to clean my nails with it, but it was clumsy. I tried using to cut leather, it didn't work how I wanted. It's bad for any kind of tip carving, like carving grooves, detail work or setting up the notches in fireboards. I can't actually think of hardly any use where I want that kind of tip, but I should leave it because you don't mind it? I did not carry it or use it before modifying, because I don't like it. Could I adapt and make it work for some stuff? Yeah, but why would I? I'm over 50 and have been more of a lifestyle user than most people. Living in the woods, farming, homesteading, hunting, butchering, tanning, carving and mininmalist wood work. Look at my channel. I'm not screwing around. I've used knives a lot in context for real life, not "bushcrafting" or weekend warrioring. When I was even new at this stuff I didn't like the opinel handles and I still don't. I like the knife okay now, it makes a difference to me and I don't understand the criticism unless you just don't like my attitude or your feelings are hurt because I don't like the stock knife that you like. I think that's what's really going on here. Am I picky, hell yeah I'm picky. Details can matter. I've opened that knife and used it thousands of times since this video, nearly every day, of course I'm going to make it work for me. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. These details matter to me. If they don't matter to you, that's fine, but I'd guess if you had my version of what an opinel should be, v.s. the stock knife, you'd probably end up favoring it if you use knives for a lot of different tasks. I am happy with the mods I made, I would do them again, recommend them to others and recommend them to opinel. You should try them ;)

      @@SkillCult Yeah I never said modifying knives is bad. Ever. Like not even once. In fact, I like knife modification, and making things better tailored, hence why I clicked on your video. And I never said your pickiness or preferences were invalid, just that the REASONS you give for them don't make sense to me. Again, edge alignment? Literally can't figure out how you struggle with that. It's not a machete or an axe. Using a clip point? Again, don't know why you struggle so much using one of the most common traditional blade tips there is. Are there different points better for different things? Yes. Does that makes clip points useless/obsolete? Obviously not. But really, I was thrown off by just how much you seem to think the Opinel is "wrong". Just the attitude as if it's an "incorrect" knife because you don't personally like it. And you accuse me of preference policing? Funniest shit I've heard all day. I've seen it. It does look like it might be better, but there were a couple things I didn't think I'd like and these mods are easy enough. Thanks.

    How to ruin the sharpened spine on the opinel 101

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  5 лет назад +1

      I used this same knife to take almost spokeshave sized shavings off an axe handle in another video. I guess it would have taken off drawknife sized shavings if I had left on the magical factory grind? Do you not know how to sharpen a knife or something? Seriously senseless comment.

      Oh my god do you not know the difference between a spine and an edge or something?

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  5 лет назад +1

      @@neohoy5231 I'm sorry, I never thought that you could actually be concerned about the factory polish on the spine v.s. the edges formed. that's even more dumber.j

      Explain what you mean and what your concern is. What did I ruin? How did I compromise it's function? Or is it an aesthetic issue? And I'm not sure what you mean by spine, so you better be specific about that, because I purposefully stay semi-ignorant of knife terminology and words are not things. Lets hear it, make a real argument!

      1. It's cheap
      2. easy to modify.
      3. Not a lot of good inexpensive knives on the market
      4. I was curious and wanted to see if I was full of it, or if the opinel fan club was onto something.
      5. To piss off opinel fan boys :D
      6. Kids and beginners need cheap knives to break and lose and mess up and experiment on. Opineal #8 seemed pretty good for that. I think it is.
      7. I'd be interested in possibly redesigning an improved Opinel #8 that is still the same price or not much more.
      I don't understand why people think tools should be bought and used just how they are. I've modified a lot of knives to better suit my uses or deal with stupid design issues. Most things aren't designed very well. How many things did I say I hated about it? 2 easy to fix things? I don't see the issue here. Does 3 minutes of filing seem like a lot of work to you? BUT I'm always interested in inexpensive knives of acceptable quality for beginners or just for cheap bastards like me. Not really interested in Moras. So just let me know what other knives under 20.00 I should be looking at.

    Cheese glue... Are you kidding me? Although I understand your intent by making what you need with old-timey, old-school methods & ingredients, you lost me on the plastic wrap. That is most definitely not au naturel & you might as well just bought some proper glue from the local hardware store in a plastic bottle. I do know however, cheese does make the toppings stick to my pizza.
    As far as the Opinel knives are concerned, I believe they were intended as a "gentleman's" knife & the shape was suited to cleaning pipes, slicing the ends of cigars & also slicing charcuterie & cheeses. Its light weight & compact design made for ease of carry in the aforementioned "gentleman's" pocket. I agree with you entirely that it is a sub par knife for practical everyday use & cheesy at best (See what I did there? Cheesy, slicing cheese, cheese glue).
    At any rate, it is always entertaining & informative to click on your videos. That is why I am a subscriber to your channel. You sir, are one of the few true renaissance men left in this world. Carry on good man, I look forward to your future endeavours & videos.

      I was just takin' the piss. I would have used fibre glass & epoxy or whatever else works that I definitely don't know how to make myself. You are a plethora of knowledge & information. Cheers.

      Which knife and I'm not going to modify anyway? and what price? Filing was literally like 2 minute or something and the handle could have been very fast with modern glue. Why buy a different knife?
