    Yes I have memory of buying my first Opinel. My wife and I were on vacation in a small port city on the Olympia Peninsula here in Washington called Port Townsend. I can never pass up an outdoor store without going in. In the case was a banana shaped knife like nothing I had ever seen before. It was an old style Opinel #9. The price was only $10 back then. I was hooked when I carved a butter knife that night at camp. It came razor sharp. Thanks for asking for a memory. I hadn’t thought about it for ages. I still have it today. 🎸🔪

      @@paullambert4445 why not use the opinel as a butter knife? Is it just for fun to carve or is there a different reason?

    Great job, buddy! This Opinel is probably about 60 years old, since it does not have a viroblock (and on the blade of the knife you can see a mark corresponding to that time). I have an Opinel of about the same age (and with the same mark on the blade) only I have an Opinel No. 9. My Opinel has its own story, its owner is an elderly Italian. He gave this knife to my friend, and he in turn gave it to me . Just like you, I cleaned and sharpened it and still use this knife. Thanks for the video and your work!

      I like leather work of all kinds. I’ve done quite a bit of it over the years. I’m part Native American, so my favorite style of knife sheath would be Native American Woodlands style. They are usually fringed and sometimes beaded or quilled, and the knife slides almost completely inside the sheath, with only a small part of the pommel exposed. This is so it is not likely to be lost while hunting.🤗🐝❤️

      Years ago I was able to purchase one in each size that had been modified by replacing the wood handles with stag.

They all hold a special place in my heart. I've restored a lot of them but i have a lot more to go. These are the tools my father taught me to use when I was a kid in the 70s so they all hold a lot of sentimental value to me but my favorite has to be a colonial (1590-1700) era 5th foot Bladesmith hornless anvil that has been in my family since it was new and all the men in my dads side of the family have used it. I can only imagine the stories it could tell after being on this earth for around 400 years. I am truly honored to have it to pass down to the next generation.

    Now all opinel got that safety ring, it's very specific from that brand (copyright i think) it's funny to see that they not always get it :) nice job, from France !

      @FFD_Restorations  Год назад

      Thank you kindly for noticing the unique safety ring on the Opinel! It does add a special touch, doesn't it? 😄 Your observation skills are on point! It was patented and introduced in 1955. If you see a knife without a safety ring it means it is produced before 1955. By the way, have you come across any other interesting knife features that caught your eye recently? Always curious to hear from fellow enthusiasts! Cheers from Norway

      @@FFD_Restorations On that picture at 0:17 did the last knife on the right got something like a bee on it ? I'm not a specialist at all but the knife on that picture looks like Opinel knife, and the last one... could be similar too an other french brand of knife named Laguiole, and bee is the logo of that brand (but there is no copyright on that name or on that logo, so there is a lot of "Laguiole" made in China ;)).
      If someday you're go again in France, i suggest you to visit "Thiers" it's the city of knife maker ;)

      🤔Mmm... No I don't have an specific region in Spain... never gone there. I'm frome Argentina 🇦🇷. But in main cityes starting by Madrid I bet they have many fly markets. Also in touristic but colonial spots like in the south I think you would find good old rusty knives to be restored. Get in contact before you go with "Salvation Army" or in Spanish "Ejercito de Salvacion".

      🧐...Also in Sweden 🇸🇪 at the MORAKNIV factory they sell "second selection" knives... I mean those knives that were damaged in part during the fabrication process... That's a great chance not to restore them, but to get creative with tha hand grip and the leather shith. Also in "military surpluses" (or in Spanish) "rezagos militaries" in every country they must have old rusty peaces.
