I’ve actually emailed about this before, I tried telling them it would be the perfect outdoor pocket knife. This was a few years ago but they said they had no plans in exploring the idea at this time. To be fair doing this on a large scale would probably require some new tooling they don’t have but I personally think they’d get a solid return on their investment.

      @syn4057 6 месяцев назад

If they made the saw blade for the No.12, they could not sell you the saw. It’s about sales. When you make it yourself, Opinel does not get that sale. If someone, looking at you 2nd Chance George, decided to custom make these, they could profit from Opinel’s lack of innovation and greed.
You can get Opinels in bulk, for less money per knife.

I did this a few years ago, using an Opinel No.12, a thin steel washer, and a modified jig saw blade. Worked pretty good and I can change the saw blade whenever I want.

Great job George. You solved some problems that are part of the Opinal. Improving the handle and handling the moist problem. I could not unfold the knife after a few days preparing food with it when making a canoe trip for several days. I also tried to improve it but it did not work out as hoped for. So the next step will be adding thin brass washers between the blade and the wood. For those who are appealed to the combination of a knife and a saw blade but do not have the skills nor the time that George has, there is a solution: The Victorinox Rangergrip 71 Gardener. I do not know if that model is available in the USA. We live in the Netherlands, so “close” to Switzerland. If you replace the toothpick with a Firefly from Tortoise Gear (US) and add some Helix tinder in the corkscrew you have a very nice combination. For those who want to make their carbon blades more “patina” you also can use mustard. That worked great on one my BPS knives.

    • @2ndchancegeorge
      @2ndchancegeorge  6 месяцев назад

Good information, thankyou. LOL, I looked for brass washers to fit but could not find any. I finally looked at the victorinox, never owned one , now that I looked, I am ashamed it took me this long to get one.....lol. thanks for watching 👍, appreciate the info and your support. Be safe

Opinel knives are awesome, although, living in coastal northern Germany, I prefer the stainless versions. Nice idea to make a knife-and-saw-combo.
You should widen the slot a bit more and use very thin washers, as well as impregnating the wood around the top by boiling it in wax to help against swelling in moist conditions and snag on the blades.
You can file a nail rest into the saw blade too to help with opening.
According to your batoning: try it the smart way - cut some wedges from small stuff first and baton the blade IN til it's almost buried to start a split, then take it out and go on with the wedges (watch the video of Felix Immler (the Victorinox-guy) on this matter). NEVER baton a blade THROUGH the wood, you never know, what will happen!
Go on oldtimer, you're awesome !

Wow what a great mod! Thanks a lot for sharing that!
In fact, the huge brother in the Opinel collection is a very fantastique knife. I'm using the No. 12 since years very regularly for outdoor activities in the desert, where it helps me mainly to replace a machete in order to cut through thorny bushes. It works also great as kitchen tool on travels, cutting water melons and veggies etc., and cuts fine through creepers and stuff in the garden. Don't want to miss that thing.
Your mod makes it even more useful for the outdoors and surely also for lot of people working in their garden. Opinel should make this mod a regular model for everybody to buy, as alternative option to buying two different tools.

Your Opinel modifications are great. I've watched a few videos now. I'm actually more of a kitchen knife guy because I like to cook a lot, but Opinel knives have been with me for almost 50 years as EDC knives (i am 61 now).
I got my first Opinel when I was about 12 years old. It was an Opinel #9 made of stainless steel. A few years later I bought the #10 in stainless steel.
Then I worked as a chef for many years and discovered my love for high-quality (mostly Japanese) kitchen knives made of non-stainless carbon steel. This led me to buy a carbon Opinel. It's a #8 that I carry with me all the time. To protect it from swelling, I have simmered the handle in hot rapeseed oil. Not only is the knife now better protected against moisture, it also looks wonderfully mahogany-colored. Like all my non-stainless kitchen knives, I take great care of my Opinel and regularly treat the handle and blade with camellia oil. Although I still have my traditional Swiss army knife and my 30-year-old Leatherman with me on trips or when camping, as the additional tools are very useful from time to time, I use the Opinel 90% of the time.
I generally prefer non-stainless knives, which are very easy to sharpen.
It's fun to watch your videos.
    Greetings from Berlin, Germany

@@2ndchancegeorge I don't really get on with classic whetstones either. I find it difficult to maintain the correct grinding angle. Professional sanding systems are simply too expensive for me.
However, I have bought the HORL roller sander, which at least gives me a good sanding angle of 15 and 20 degrees. This system isn't perfect either and I can't get smaller angles like 10 degrees, for example, which I need for some of my Japanese knives. That's why I try to keep knives sharp for as long as possible once they've been sharpened. To do this, I have a variety of honing leathers with different sharpening pastes, as well as a hanging leather like the ones used in old barber stores to keep razors sharp. If a knife really gets blunt or gets nicks, I take it to a professional knife sharpener who also specializes in Japanese knives.
Daily care after each use is important. Clean it, dry it, give it a few strokes on the leather, wipe it down and then put it in the leather or wooden sheath or on the magnetic strip.
If you love your knives, take care of them. Since I know my personal limits in terms of sharpening skills, I prefer to leave my knives in professional hands if necessary. I sharpen my Opinel, which is very easy to sharpen, to 15 degrees on each side with the HORL (if necessary) and then with the leathers.

George, several years ago, I noticed that the high-carbon steel on Opinel knives worked excellently with fire steels. I coupled that observation with my desire to carry a No. 8 Opinel as a backup knife when hiking and foraging. I had an extra clip for a knife that I got somewhere, and it was an embarrassingly easy project to flatten the end of the handle of a No. 8 and screw the clip in place. While I was at it, I gave the handle a light sanding to remove the printed name and stained the handle reddish orange. ( beech doesn't take colorants easily) and I dropped the point of the blade just a little. It's a light, handy, knife that I can clip to a belt, strap or pocket.

@@2ndchancegeorge really loved it. I spent like an hour searching for a decent product and nobody makes anything. Considered building as you did, but I couldn't find an appropriate matching blade, just the saws... I never knew Opinel had the ideal bits!
What I really wanted was a knife with saw teeth on the spine, but then that wouldn't be good for battoning or striking the ferro, not to mention it would inevitably tear up a hand 😂👍

Very nice build. My favorite way of treating wood is to run it under the wire wheel on the bench grinder to peel off the polyurethane finish and give the wood a hint of texture - works great with hammer handles - then I coat it thoroughly with pine tar that's been thinned down with turpentine. Waterproof and prevents mold and mildew, plus adds patina like you wouldn't believe! You can buy pine tar by the quart, and everyone should have it on hand, imo.

Nice mod. I have modified my Opinel No 10 according to the bladeship and the grip pretty similar like you did. I also widened the slot for the blade for having it operating as a onehander. So that i can flip the blade out with a flick of my wrist. That works pretty good for some time. But even so I have impregnated the handle with linseed oil, it became swolen over time, so that the onehand abillity has gone. I like to try a two bladed version like yours some time, but with two knifeblades, somewhat trapper style, but with a droppoint and a sheepsfoot blade. So nice inspiration. Thank You.

new sub, hope it's okay to comment so soon: nice mod George! been an Opinel fan for many years. believe it or not I made and then recommended the closed-blade lock to Opinel about 20 years ago when I was living in France, they didn't have it back then. they told me "it's fine the way it is", but seems they decided they liked the idea in the end. between the two of us we've elevated/"monsterized" Opinel to new heights. :😀 👍✌🖖

New to the channel and thoroughly enjoyed it! I have an old number 12 sitting in a drawer that I got a bit too ambitious with the handle carving, leaving it functional but ugly, but seeing your video gives me an idea to perhaps rehandle it, and maybe even include a saw blade.

I did mod my grip in a similar way.
The poky bits in the back had to go.
I did remove all the lacquer and gave it multiple coats with linseed oil varnish.
What still irritates me, is the tip shape.
I think I shall also make it a drop point, or even a spear point, like those old frontier knifes.

Really super mods! I've wished for some time that Opinel would come out with a two-blade knife/saw, but never considered the possibility of a DIY one. Good call on changing the blade to a drop point, too, IMO. And with the jimping you added, the knife reminds me of my favorite fixed blade, the Green River Dadley. Even a lanyard hole, you really thought of everything! I smell a project coming my way...
So, did you have to quench the blade as you ground it to retain temper, or did you just go slow?
