The police stole my car today (no joke, it was towed at work leaving me stranded 40 miles from home), but this video really improved my day.
Sorry bro. Hope you get it back
That sucks, man. Hopefully it works out in the end. Best of luck to you.
ah man. hope you can get it back soon
@@thorhighheels I was able to get it back on Tuesday, with the help of some of my coworkers. I had to pay $245 cash to get it back. On-street parking sucks, but I appreciate everyone's concern for some guy in the comments.
Damn 250 dollars is a lot sorry to hear you had to go through that
In one of the collector edition booklets, Kojima wrote something that was along the lines of that "previous games were tactical stealth simulations, while with MGS5 they tried to make it as infiltration simulation".
That explains a lot of things like guns blazing being a non-punished approach and wide open areas to infiltrate from anywhere.
Now that I've watched this entire retrospective, I gotta say Hind D might be my favorite character in the series. Thanks for making this.
The real hind d was the Pequot we made along the way

Glad someone finally made a take on this that isn't either "10/10 best mgs" or "literally the worst game ever #fuckkonami"
I never understood the unbridled praise the game got, and never agreed with the abject hate it received. It's a pretty good game bogged down with questionable design choices, and a somewhat disappointing story when held up to the other games. A solid 7/10 if I had to put a score to it.
I never realized until now just how much I need an extended OH YA ZHE ART techno banger in my life.
Wow, that's a feature length video. Thanks, I'll save it for tonight.
Quetzal you’re in it too lol
qué hacés acá? es por tu culpa que youtube me recomendó esto?
Quetzal??? Shit just became meta as hell!!!
1:15:45 Well to be correct, the actual Big Boss was in Zanzibar (MG2) while Punished was the one that died in the first Outer Heaven (MG1)
I wonder if Death Stranding will have Poor Pooping Johnny
we already know it has a pissing protag

I'm glad someone else noticed just how weird MGSV feels, and not because of the typical Kojima weirdness. I had pretty much the same thoughts as you when I first finished it. Everyone except, like, Ocelot, Miller, Huey and Code Talker speak so little they might as well not talk at all, no David Hayter, 90% of the dialogue being tapes or radio chatter, it's all so bizarre. Speaking of Huey, I'm surprised how little you talked about him considering how hated he is.
At the risk of sounding corny, I want to thank you for making this series. I admit, I'm one of those people who writes off a lot of MGS as „Kojima being stupid” but with the way you presented the games I realized there's actually a lot of reasoning for (some of) the things that happen. They still have a little too much dumb for me, but at least now I consider the intent more often. So, thanks for that.
Is he hated? He definitely has LIAR written all over him but then the gang over all is pretty delusional. I took it as being unclear on purpose, so that you'd never truly know if he was actually a bad. Can't say I really harbor more negative feelings for him then I do against most of the people in this game lol
As someone who played MGSV before anything else, I couldn't even tell what was happening 90% of the time. It felt like watching a foreign film without subtitles and also, while watching it, I'm high as fuck.
As someone who has rewatched the retrospective many times, prior to the finale, the ending was VERY satisfying as I find something new every time, keep it up SpideyTallSandles.
Thanks box!

OMG HE LIKES MY COMMENT
(head explosion sounds)
this entire series has been done brilliantly. love the effort put into the research, and giving the games a chance past the general first impressions people give out. plus finding out the stuff going on behind the scenes at konami as things were being developed puts it into perspective.
Just wanna say bravo man. This is one of, if not THE most comprehensive MGS retrospective on this whole platform, made all the better with your perspective and humor. Metal Gear Solid and Hideo Kojima are endless sources of fascination after all. Here's hoping Death Stranding is good (note: I don't know what the fucking game is supposed to be!)
H.D Beird
Why? It’s so literal, it’s arguably easier to understand than MGS.
Purvdragon-sensei everyone is just freaking out cause he’s only shown the “boring” gameplay

How is getting on an exoskeleton and delivering packages boring to these people?
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
This was easily one of the best retrospective series I've ever seen! Thanks for all the hard work and dedication!
When Death Stranding comes out, will you make a video about it for this series?
I've been feverishly waiting for this episode and have been watching and rewatching the previous entries over and over again. I love this series and your style in general, keep it up my man!
Yeah I absolutely will. I will also make a few more supplementary episodes on other games related to Kojima. Snatcher, Boktai, Lords of Shadow, stuff like that.
@@thorhighheels what an absolute LEGEND!
Fantastic series. I'm glad you saw this through and finished it all in a reasonable amount of time. Looking forward to your new content!
i mean it took a whole year lol
@@thorhighheels a ten part series with an average length of 30 minutes coming out in a year alongside your other content is damn impressive.
Good lord, that was beautiful. Thank you for properly introducing me to this great series, Mr.Highheels.
I beat this game literally two weeks ago and have since been waiting for your retrospective part on it. After a long day at the uni, I prepare to kick back a little before my homework and what do you know.. An hour and a half of relaxation's ahead. Love your content; you're an inspiration!

The part where you discussed MGSV and its review cycle was on fucking point my dude.
I mean i enjoyed stuff like TheGamingBrits review (read: rant) on it but looking back that shit was way too reactionary and one sided to be informative as a whole. This is why i love your stuff. Shit feels cozy and balanced, informative and entertaining. Like the Mad Lad you are. Very cool indeed.
honestly the best reviews are the ones that are years after cause you have time to acquire all the information and and let the dust settle
I felt similarly to TGB at the time but over the years I’ve come to really love MGSV for what it is.
@@SaberRexZealot it's a flawed game for sure but it's still the best open world stealth game imo and the different ways you could approach missions was great it was just to bad that the story didn't support the tools in the game for most players to use them properly honestly it reminds me of dmc 4 in that regard of having a great gameplay system and the mission/story structure didn't support having those tools
Yeah but I did have retrospect on my side. I remember Charlie tweeting a daily count down to MGSV's release so he was clearly WAAAAY too hype. Not saying its his fault he was so deeply let down or anything, and he articulates his points well regardless, but it kinda seemed like he was at a point where the game couldnt have lived up to how excited he was for it, even if it wasn't... you know, what it was lol
Kudos on the love and craft you clearly put into all these videos - best analysis of the Metal Gear series I've seen outside of Super Bunnyhop. So refreshing to see a genuinely nuanced and in-depth take on MGS5 in particular. Selfishly hoping you're also a massive Silent Hill fan, because I'd love to see your take on that series. Either way, really looking forward to whatever you make next!
i've done a few vids on SH before but they're all pretty old on not on this level. Would love to do something similar for that series one day though.
This entire retrospective was a big journey I am glad to be witnessing. Love you fam
The FF8 music makes me happy.
Boi if this ain't one hell of a retrospective.
To be honest its same as Super Bunnyhop's MGS videos.
You've put words to things I (and most others) subconsciously knew, but didn't know how to express it.
You very well put together all actual stories behind development of this massive undertaking, as well as the best thing, humanizing the developers and people involved.
You'll forever be remembered, ZeusFlatShoes
thanks man. thanks for providing cool articles over the years that prove a lot of the stupid bullshit i make up while writing as well.

This story is so unique and weird that one had to make something like this! OH YA ZHE ART
MGSV is quite strange because it's hard to tell the reason for its problems.
The "Kojima is god" people will tell you it's all definitely without a doubt Konami's fault for being a shitty company, and there's proof of it but it's still isn't clear enough to say for sure.
The "anti - Kojima" people will asure you that it's all Kojima's fault, that he's simply too up his own ass and that he is (and, sometimes, always has been) just a hack. But they completely diregard the possibility of interference in the development of the game.
That's why I'm very interested in Death Stranding. Some people are already calling it a masterpiece and others shit, but there just isn't enough information to actually tell either way.
MGSV has a bunch of excuses to possibly explain its faults but Death Stranding doesn't.
Death Stranding:
-Had a good budget
-Had a healthy development
-Kojima absolutely cares about its themes, story and gameplay ( you could argue that the reason MGS games have had problems over the years is because Kojima had wanted to quit being involved with them several times and didn't actually give a shit about the series anymore)
I will try to play Death Stranding with as little of a positive or negative bias, trying to give the creators behind it a fair shot. If it's good I will keep supporting its creator and his team, and if it sucks I will be able to say with some confidence that whatever was that made "Hideo Kojima games" good is simply not there anymore.
great comment. can't wait for Death Stranding to come out and see if Kojima still has what it takes.
Some people say he lost a writer
Well let's see because there's yet another camp that knows Kojima Productions is a team, just like any other. I think all anyone really wants is a well made but unique game. Kojima Productions makes those, thats why I'm buying. Kojima being the leader of this team and having very unique themes and ideas is an added bonus. I'm just as excited for this as I would be for another Rockstar or Naughty Dog release. Some game makers just got it like that.
Fair enough. So far what I can tell it is a 'okay' game. Kojima still a narcissistic ass, tho
So, did you rike it?
Solid work my friend! Keep em coming!
God damn this video was awesome! Keep up the good work Thorhighheels, i m glad you made this video longer, I hope you can do this for all the endings of your retrospective series that you decide to do in the future! I always find myself checking back on your channel to see if you've uploaded. Your content is the best, I too like the weirder side of gaming like yourself as well with the likes of Suda51's games and alot of the Japanese only PS1 games videos you do, it gives me something to try to actually look for and hunt down and play and add to my otherwise huge collection of games. 👍🍻 I already can't wait for your next video! 😁
10/10 retrospective, kudos to you, impressive, this is outstanding, wow, yes!

Fantastic video. Super mature and deep about all of the complicated issues, also a ton of fun. This is your best. Thanks for giving the workers some credit and FUCK KONAMI. The after credits sequence is great post-ironic meta. You are about to trascend into inmaterial fifth wall crashing quantic game reviewer. Keep it on! You're inspiring!
You're comment game is quite strong. You see, I paused the video with your comment. So, I know everything. And I definitely understand how to lead into any comments I post while under the intoxication. "I AM INNOCENT!" I love it!
This retrospective series took you more than a year to make happen, and it is really, very good. I hope you feel proud of your work, Thor. Congrats on finishing it and good luck on future projects!
Small correction: The patch locking out PT owners is untrue, the patch was never actually released and the game is still accessible. I checked on my own PS4 when the rumors started flying.
Thank you, you spared me to power on my dusted ps4 to check it.
ah ok that's cool. I dont have the game myself anymore so I couldnt check.
I was so pissed when they took the game off PSN. I got my PS4 literally the day after it had happened, so I've never gotten to experience it for myself.

Wonderful job with this entire series man. Big props for mentioning the n gage game btw
WOW thor! im totally amazed, 1hour long video... thats veeeeeeery surprising, keep the good work!!!
Also, this is by far the best retrospective on MGS. Your choice of humanizing the people who were just as vital as Kojima in creating this franchise but don't get the recognition seriously elevates your videos above the sea of surface level takes on the franchise.
Discovered this channel a few weeks ago and I wonder where the youtube algorithm gods were hiding it all this time.
Hope they favor you from now on.
Kudos to you and congratulations.
Man this retrospective was awesome. As someone who played but a handful of games in the series but was always interested in it (because at its peak it was inevitable not to talk about it while chatting about video games) I found this deep dive very informative, sweet, and downright entertaining.

Haha. Very funny and informativ. Just binged act1-10 xD Kudos mr.HighHeels.
Your channel desevers WAY more subscribers! This is extraordinary good content
Glad people still talk about this game
Nah, I personally don't see TPP being unfinished as an artistic statement in any way. I purely see it as both Kojima and Konami biting off waay more than they can chew...which is why I'm not massively excited for Death Stranding. Kojima was at his best when he had a pretty linear canvas but mad subversive shit sprinkled in...so basically all the MGS games up to 3 (maybe 4) and Snatcher. The latter of which has actually become one of my top 5 games of all time.
It isnt, Mission 51 and a lot of content (including a whole chapter) were never finished.
Stop trying tl justify every shit Kojima takes as dome kind of genius move we dont understand.
@@Jose-se9pu Projecting pretty hard, guy.
Personally, OP, I agree. Kojima's been trying to end the series since at least MGS2, yet the fans keep demanding more. Konami forced him to finish development after he spent too much time and too much money on this one game in an irrational manner. Not defending Konami, just that both parties have their share of blame for MGSV's final state.
I dunno about that man Vs gameplay and open world sandbox where ahead of their time. As you can see, that formula became a staple as you can see from BotW, RDR2, HZD that came after took the tag, loot, scoot gameplay loop that MGSV popularized.
I have spent the last 12 hours watching the entire retrospective. There have been a few games I have missed along the way. I'm in tune with all of your videos but I loved getting your perspective as well as the general plot that I had no idea about, like Chico and Paz, great to get some background. 5 is not great, neither was 4, but your perspective on the games was.
48:52
can't believe how much I agree to that now after watching your whole retrospective.
After watching all of the retrospective things, I have a new out look on the mgs series. Some agree, others disagree but nevertheless I gave an open mind to all of it. Thank you and looking forward to more.
Probably won’t read this but I love the effort you put in these videos, keep it up!
You know, I think I managed to escape the crazy hate cycle and salty reviews of V because, even though I was as hyped as everyone, I realized shit wasn't going all that well with this game's development and Konami as a whole. So I managed to adjust my expectations and apreciate only what was there: not "THE FINAL CHAPTER IN THE SAGA OMG" since for me this shit was all wrapped up in 4, but something else (didn't know what at the time). And what we got in the end was I think what the game mostly wanted to be: a fascinanting, expansive and dreamlike journey with some pretty in your face (meta) themes, even if it's 2/3 of what was intended. It's actually incredible how polished this game is considering what's missing.
ZHE ART!!!!!
I almost teared up when you quoted the AI colonel at the end
Woah, what a ride this has been
Back once again for about the tenth time to watch/listen to this video about a game that I've owned for 5 years but have yet to play... 😆
Those 'assassinate my flopping dong' side ops were so bullshit. Every time I thought I succeeded, it would just come back even more powerful than the last time.
All of those Paz tapes from Ground Zeroes are originally from Peace Walker
Man how I wish Kojima Productions didn't try to reboot the MGS series within the sequel. The rampant retcon and characters not resembling themselves was so uncharacteristic of an MGS game.
To think the team chose obscure set pieces, plot lines, and locations was the disappointing part for me, also continuing right after PWs anime story was another surprising choice.
Main reason being Kojima Productions had so many options for an open world MGS without all the retcon and giant empty open world. For example MGSVs amazing gameplay loop except instead random bullshit, 5-6 open world locations about the size of a few camp Omegas strung together by check points, that dropped the player/real Big Boss at landmarks of MGS lore and other main characters being taught/saved by Big Boss. Some examples would be the memories recounted by, Sniper Wolf, the real Liquid, Ocelot, and Mantis. The game should have spanned a open timeline, with the side missions/side plot being the R&D building of Metal Gear and a real inside gimpse of the building of Outer Heaven, recruit the original top brass, like Machine Gun Kid, Running Man, and Frank Jager n'shit. Maybe even remake the original Metal Gear from the other point of view, just to kick is in the nuts and have a young Solid Snake rendered in the Fox Engine come to fuck our Mother Base. That would have been a Phantom Pain, killing the people spent so much time recruiting, literally blowing up the shit you just built. Seriously what the fuck was MGSV when they had so much to draw from?
I also think Quiet's plot line that would have make is feel ashamed from objectifying her seemed to be cut, nothing said in the game made any sense for Kojima to say that, with nothing even close to resembling a shameful plot line. Same with the new cross game mechanics that was never before done in gaming that was teased, however we didn't even get mention at launch. MGSV was painfully unfinished. I honestly think PT was a big part of Kojima being fired, but not as much as him asking for more money and time that V clearly seen needed.
God I wish we got a mg1 remake
"I'm upset because sequel X in popular game series Y wasn't my personal fan-service dream game!" Well good news dude, all you need to do is become a world-class game designer and make one! Since it's all that simple, eh?
Man, you see good details. Thanks for the video.
You know, the point when you reload the game on your first fail at ground zeroes at 11.50. made me remember when playing Death Stranding.
Many times i just reloaded when i lost all my cargo in catastrophic ways. I expected from Sr. Kojima some 4th wall bullying me for reloading too many times.
You know, if he is already playing with the idea of the "extra lifes", by literaly carrying some kind of "extra life" with yourself (BB)....
Next times probabbly.....
11:48 felt that when you pressed the map button instead of the pause button
Great video! I feel the same about these games and thought Ground Zero was highly underrated.
Great video.. great MGS decumentary.
nice one, man. You're reaching completion on your magnum opus
Also that anti nuke ending....
it's just.....wow.
Great video, sad this is the last one but I am excited to see what new game series will get a Retrospective.
Metal Gear... loved the music, story, characters, world, terminology, technology, HIND-D and even the Kojima humor/female representation. Never liked the nano machines/parasites. I wish all the psychic powers/pyromancy had been left as some humans having special abilities. Sad that it came all crashing down with MGS5 and that Kojima wanted to make an open world game thus abandoning the formula that started with Metal Gear all the way to MGS4. I wonder if Death Stranding will have Kojima go full "George Lucas prequels" and just crash and burn or will the game surprise/captivate me as MGS1 on the PS1 did to me as a 12 year old young boy back in the 90s.
Already the sifi shit in the DS trailers has me excited for the story. I just hope the bosses and gameplay come together.
I dunno I just think we should have seen evidence of Kojima being a hack, KP has made so many games over such a long time, they've all have brought something to the table. Kojima Productions under Konami is pretty close to what we should expect. He had full creative reigns as long as it was a metal gear. As we saw with MGSV you can reboot a series within a sequel, and the original aspects of MGSVs story that had nothing to do with the MGS lore but more the Moby Dick revenge plot was some of the teams best work. I feel like that's what should be expected with unchained Koji Pro.
I mean he's under a new outfit and IP yet he still can't help but make you a sneaking spy that's all about mech legs, military trained teams, and enemies ala 90s action movie. Seems like he's still got the shit we want.
Kept me waiting.
If i ever start making my own youtube analysis vidos on topics, I want you to know that you would definitely be an inspiration. this is some high class content, my favorite part being how your own individuality shines through. veri punk, very coool
Holy shit that edit at 54:14
That was smooth lol
I like 1:12:39 more ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I just really like how you're one of the few reviewers of this game who pointed out that the level design when sneaking is a big upgrade compared to ground zeroes.
What a series, games and videos both.
I remember when I finally grew bored of MGS5 to some extent. I had all sorts of great equipment and shit, and none of the missions held any more challenge. So I started doing missions with only BDUs, the water pistol, and the empty magazines. That's some fun shit.
Finally... the review to surpass Bunnyhop
@20:44 woah! I didn’t even know this was even in the game! I just now heard the tape and that shot was crazy 😧
These tapes we some of KPs best work. I think Skullfaces back story didn't justify rape. But it did show why Skullface was so fucked up. I don't think there is a responsible way to do that. Some people are just very selfish, sociopathic, and opportunistic, these are the type of people who will rape or use it to break down children. Also that crazy meta of Chico's love interest being the source of deep trauma. I mean these kids also had bolts in the Achilles tendon and organs fucked with. I really think these are the types of things that don't get said about places like Gitmo, or behind closed doors. I feel like worse things happen under our nose perpetrated by our own government.
Perfect, finally someone gives an honest review and opinion. Thx!!
Gosh... I wish youtube actually remembered where I stopped the video and would let me continue whenever I want and not always START OFF FROM THE BEGINNING.
Anyways, great retrospective and respectable finale!
