You know, as I played both 0 and 6 I can feel that I felt the same points you said in the video but I was never able to form them into coherent thoughts. Just some odd vibes, not being able to process them proper.
Hearing them fleshed out and conceptualized like this feels incredibly cathartic and I really appreciate that.

Man, the series grew up a LOT and from 0 to 6, I could see that growth. Overall, fun video and no matter where Kazuma goes next, I will always remember him as the guy who will fight to protect people and had a chicken as his lieutenant in 0......only in Yakuza, only in Yakuza.
I can tell you’re an old school fan because there are sections where you’ll refer to Majima as “Majima” but in the same sentence you’ll refer to Kiryu as “Kazuma”.
Throwback to the inferior localization quality of years past. Also, great video man. The amount of love yakuza has gotten in general over the last 2-3 years is insane.
It was the spicy eyepatch wolf essay that got me into Yakuza. It was his latest video that led me to this video.

Replayed legendary Shenmue 1 and 2 a few months ago, and was left in a severe need of some sort of fix, afterwards; That's when I remembered being told about this franshise, as some sort of spiritual successor.
Bought myself 0, 1, 2 and man I was not prepared for what was to come... Loved each game to the point I was losing sleep as was playing through the damn things!
Yet to play the rest, though... here am I, hopping for the release of 3, 4, 5 and 6 on PC.
Yakuza 0, Kiwami and Kiwami 2 were listed as exclusives on PS4 back then, now they are on PC and Xbox One too
@KentuckyFriedSnake they already have the dragon engine running on pc. They are probably not going to port 6 until the collection is on pc. Could happen this year, so let's just keep our hopes up.

I waited almost a year to view this video. I finished Yakuza 6 today and could finally watch it. It did not disappoint.
The Yakuza 7 demo showed me that 6 was merely the end of Kiryu being the lead character. Gon be good.

9:11 playing yk1 first, this scene feels like you're travelling back in that good time, then meeting your old friend that's now lost thus made you cherish this little time w/them even more while you still can.
Kamurocho is such a memorable place at this point, what you said at 9:10 really hit the right notes for me.
Yakuza 6 was a real favourite of mine.

@food wich It's not like 6 didn't have its fair share of wonders, getting to look and explore Kamurocho in a different engine was refreshing, definetly felt like filling in Kiryu's shoes and reconecting with a place you haven't seen in a long while.
But the dogging on the Dragon Engine mostly comes from the fact that it is limited, the return to 30 FPS plus the wonky physics is a step down from the fluidity and responsiveness of the old engine's combat. When the team has gradually improved in the past with a variety of fighting styles that had you tackling encounters in different ways, having to resort to only one and generally solving group encounters with grabbing a guy and spinning him around to separate and picking off the others one by one due to the physics got old quickly. It might be the reason why 7 is dramatically changing the combat to be turn-based RPG instead, since they can't figure out a satisfying solution to the brawling combat without revamping the engine altogheter.
6's combat was dope. Physics-based combat is fun.

@@MSguy1000 It's fun. Swinging people around is fun. Knocking people into each other is fun. It makes the whole thing feel less rigid.
@@JayAreAitch It's a fun spectacle to see 3D models collide as you can swing enemies when throwing them... for a short while. When you realize most encounters resort to groups of thugs clumped together to storm you and the most optimal solution is to grab one and swing him, then picking off each one individually, rinse and repeat, it becomes tedious. And when the engine makes sure to stop your combo momentum by having their block make your attacks bounce off and swerve off them, and having to start again until they stop blocking is frustrating, to say the least. Not to mention that some strong attacks send Kiryu, a guy built like a brick wall, flying backwards, where once before he would fall to the ground where he stood when he got hit.
I wonder which part of the previous games' combat you feel rigid, when in 0 and Kiwami 1 you had things such as Rush style that had Kiryu bobbing and weaving out of incoming damage, lightning quick dodges and stunning attacks, combined with Style switching mid-combos in Kiwami which made for a satisfying fluid combat customization. And that is, without getting into the merit of speking of Ishin's combat...
0 had by far the best built storyline. Incredible pacing, well written vilains they were always part of the overall narrative, two fantastic stories that played each other suprisingly well and some really, really emotional moments. And the best gameplay of the franchise. Sure 6 is more "fun" but it made the game so freaking easy.
Kiwami 2 edges out 0 just a bit imo. 2 always had one of the better stories and villains in the series, and kiwami 2 turns it into a sort of greatest hits of the series, and it's just great. Not to say 0 isn't also amazing. Just my preference. Judgment is also excellent.

@@davidkrickau5060 im actually doing it 1 through 6 and then doing the prequel 0. Playing them mostly as they came out. Although i just finished five and thinking of going into 0 first cause it would make sense to do that one after 5. I know Kiwami 1 and 2 added stuff from 0 but i wanted to play it the way a lot of the originals fans did and they did not start with 0 my friend.

That was bullshit. Same with Lau. Both should've stayed dead. It's just not believable in any way possible.
Kashiwagi got cheesed up pretty bad and Lau got hit in the fucking frontal lobe by a 9mil from 10 meters away.

I was looking forward to watching this video ever since it was published, but I didn't want to watch it until I finished all the mainline games myself. I finally got around to playing 6 when it came out on PC, and I actually remembered to come back to this video almost a year and a half later. Great shit as always, Thor!

Just bought my friend Yakuza 0 for Christmas. Now I want it for myself.
I lived in the town next to Onomichi for like, 6 months, so I went there all the time. Every time I see screenshots of Yakuza 6's Onomichi, it's like, so weird, but super neat. Like those people they got to be like "wow, rome in Assassin's Creed looks just like rome!"

6 did a good job of sending off Kiryu (at least until he's forced back into 7 ughhh) but the plot of the game is basically totally isolated and doesn't feel like quite as good of a send-off to the series as it was to the character himself. Also the final boss is a babyman with pretty much no actual history with Kiryu.
I saw 6 as more of a send-off to Kiryu himself, as the devs had said previously that 6 would not be the end of the series outright. In that sense, I thought it did a good job. Totally agree on the final boss. I bought him completely as a villain/mastermind in vein of Munakata or Jingu, but not as a final boss.

i was honestly pretty bitter about the end of yakuza 6 when i got to it, of all the little gameplay problems in the new engine snowballing and feeling a bit unsatisfied by the very end...
despite that i still poured tons and tons of time into its side content and i couldn't really figure out why.
i think the way you talked about things here helped me understand the reason i played so much of it lol

It's EXTREMELY unfortunate that Majima & Saejima aren't in 6. It's the only game with no Majima fight...

Having just played the series for the first time 0-7.. It never connected how both 0 and 6 works as the series finale.. When I finally got to 6 it felt a bit off that Majima was barely mentioned.. But if you look at them together we just had an entire half of a game devoted to him

Yakuza was a hidden gem for me.
6 is such a great finale to kiryu's story. It really does finish it on a very bitter sweet feeling. Though I really have to question why there is so much motion blur. It would be fine if I could turn it off. But as is, playing the game does make me feel queazy. And by god, the text is the worst in this game. Some text is way too small to read, and the subtitles are the hardest to read in this game. White text on bright environments is really hard to read

Only thing I hated about 6 was Koshimizu. He had a chance to be a decent antagonist. Why he let himself be relegated to a lackey behind Iwami boggles my mind. Even Kurusu said he was grooming Koshimizu for command. Why the fuck didn’t he just take shit over??
Well, at the end, Koshimizu will lead the yomei alliance, and have rebel against his boss by not killing kiyo, Sumeya's loved one.
