    My feelings on this one are a bit complicated. On the one hand, it's an insanely beefy and dynamic experience that capitalizes on the groundwork established in 3 and 4 (before 0 would capitalize on the assets of what came before as well to be its own beefy monster). This should, logically, make it one of the most amazing installments. However, on the other hand... its pacing can SEVERELY take a toll on ya.
    This title is probably better on replays, but when you're not skipping scenes during the first go around, they really, really, really, really, really, reeeeeally drag them out and just throw too much at you. It's to such a degree that it can outright hamper the overall enjoyment, especially when other nuisances (like how intrusive and borderline unavoidable enemy encounters frequently are) serve to slow things down further. And even though having a lot of content is good, those character side stories didn't need as many missions as they did (especially when we have a lot of regular sub-stories as it is).
    At the end of the day, it's a respectable game, but it's also easy to see why a number of fans come away thinking of 5 as one of the lesser installments, as its goal of trying to deliver a lot in every facet of the experience can be both its greatest strength and its greatest weakness.

    • @Sawngawkuh
      @Sawngawkuh 2 года назад

      @Florida Man I know. Especially back then when there were less installments that came after it. Even despite those issues, it would naturally be in the top 3 due to all the content and refinements. It's not a heavily polarizing installment, but there was some contention over how much all the good was comprised by those less desirable aspects, with some tolerating them and some feeling they weighed it down.

    Fun fact : Majima was planned for a playable chapter but was cut. Only proof of this is a early concept art of all the playable characters with Majima being present in frame along side Haruka, Kiryu, Saejima, Akiyama and Shinata.
    Nothing is known about it though.

    It stuns me how Zero was the big debut for the series popularity outside Japan when 5 has buckets loads of content and a story spanning five different playing characters. Like holy shit, how was this not a bigger thing? This game’s great!

      It's also probably because it was yakuza 5. Not 0 a prequel. People are probably not going to want to just straight into the 5th game, but with a prequel it's more modern and you dont need the investment of 4 other games to understand what's happening.

    • @MattDrawsYou92
      @MattDrawsYou92 3 года назад +1

      I’d say marketing, I remember seeing all the Yakuza games at GameStop and had no idea it was a beat em up with quirky side quests.

    • @richardnash6111
      @richardnash6111 3 года назад

      @@MattDrawsYou92 I think the PS3 era some of that changed but only if you looked at reviews online. During the PS2 era I thought it was GTA but with a really poor beat em' up main gameplay push and set in Japan. Didn't realize the way the Clan was written was more in line with classic Yakuza films and not chasing American Crime film tropes.
      0 did by far have the biggest marketing push though and so it sold the best. 5 is really where the quirky side quests become prominent. All the games from 2 onward have them but 5 seemed to rely on them more. I think once the team realized that was a big selling point the series was ready for a bigger audience but when they were the exception more than the rule the games were probably not going to be as widely appealing.

    Just finished this game last night and I couldn't agree more. It's nice to finally see a review on Yakuza 5 that I actually agree with, so many folks hate this game for some reason. Yeah it's messy at times but god damn is it an exhilarating ride, with incredibly well written side quests, detailed minigames and easily some of the best moments in this series. Watching Kiryu single handedly take down an army is something I will never forget. I feel like people just don't like 5 coz they didn't really engage with the side content or didn't take their time with it. Anyways love your review. I really loved this game

    I absolutely love Yakuza 5. It's up at the top of my list for best Yakuza games, tied with 3 in all its chunky glory. The characters are interesting, the settings are as well since having new areas to explore as well as kamurocho cant be a bad thing. The minigames for each character (taxi kiryu, hunting, rhythm game) are surprisingly fleshed out with their own small contained stories that you can play for a bit more depth to the characters, but you can just as easily ignore them with no impact to the main story.

    Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Mine is that 5 doesn't have a very good story compared to the other games in the series. It's more confusing than 4, many characters drop off the map shortly after doing their thing, Park is a bitch, the final boss didn't deserve his final boss status, and if you thought 4 v 4 on the Millenium Tower was stupid in 4, 4 guys meeting on a tower to beat each other to death so that one of them could GLIMPSE the real villain (before they die?) is just utterly nutterly butterly. 3 whole clans showing up to help Akiyama was awesome but really stupid at the same time, Harukas big speech in the middle of her super important concert was both awesomely cute and heartfelt as well as REALLY STUPID. Still a great game but I do not understand how it can be someones favourite storywise and it sure as shit is nowhere near "grounded".

    Love the Dead Souls wheeze at the end, hah.
    Glad you enjoyed the Y5 experience! Enough to call it the pinnacle of the series until that point, even. Outside of personally feeling like the story fell apart a bit at the end there, I can totally understand how you'd come to that conclusion. It's a damn fine game. Stupidly massive, too. Which is probably its other big "fault." It's a bit *too* big. I definitely got some quantity over quality vibes from it at times. And I think the story suffers from this, too. From having to carry the immense weight of writing in 5 playable main characters, 5 cities, all on top of continuing the story and having it actually make sense in the somewhat bat-shit crazy Yakuza universe... Yeah, it got pretty bloated and fairly messy at times as a result. Again, mostly at the end.
    But shit, I still gotta commend the team for pulling it off as well as they did despite that! Because at the end of the day, it's hard to complain about "too much good stuff." All that being said, I'm really looking forward to your take on Yakuza 0, which I feel remedies most of the problems I outlined in Y5 here. It's more focused, only features two characters, and consequently manages to have the best and most gripping story in the series. And shit, let's throw in the hands-down best gameplay in the series while we're at it! It's a gem, man, and I hope you enjoy that one, too.
    Oh, and out of curiosity, do you plan on playing the Japanese only Kenzan and Ishin? I suppose you already would have reviewed Kenzan if that really were in your timeline, but hey, it doesn't hurt to ask. There's an excellent guide out there to play and experience Ishin's story with that totally makes it worth playing, if you're considering it!

    • @thorhighheels
      @thorhighheels  6 лет назад +1

      I'd really love to play Kenzan & Ishin, but I don't think I'd get much out of it without there being English text. I know there's a guide, but I'd rather just immerse myself fully with the Yakuza games, rather then tabbing out to check what was just said. Who know's though, with the series gaining popularity lately, they might still choose to bring one of them over seas. It took years for 5 to get localized, so it doesn't seem too crazy.

    • @horogamestv
      @horogamestv 3 года назад

      Nothing can remotely pass 0, 1 and 2 in terms of story (specially 0).
      It is hard for us who kinda start liking the series when kiwami was released, so we aren't really seeing the growth the developers went through over the years. Instead, playing then in numerical order is just a rollercoaster of quality: you go from an amazing and outstanding story (0), to regular but emotional one (1), and them to a nice love story with a good villain (2) and them go all the way down to the weird and slow paced thing that Y3 is. And from this onwards is just a natural evolution.

The stories pacing really takes a hit at Saejimas section and nothing really happens of note till the 4th chapter. While the idol section is different and not the worst thing ever its not the best either. Combat for all the characters (minus haruka obviously) is probably close to the best in the series

      Well I'd say I'm about half way into 5 and from what I can tell it's a better game than 4. Though that may depend what you play yakuza for, I found 4s side content and story lacking though saejimas chapter was a huge highlight in 4 for me, the dojo side minigames being one of my favourites in the series and prison segment in 4 being much better than 5s prison segment. Though 5s story seems better so far, there are some parts that feel a bit slow, the gameplay variety is there, there's more side stories and the mini/side games are very good.

    While I do like Yakuza 5, I gotta disagree with you on the main story as I felt that it was easily the worst out of the mainline series. The way it shoehorns its main theme of "dreams" felt like something straight out of a shounen anime and the way it tried to weave both Haruka and Shimada's storylines into the main narrative came across as sloppy and needlessly convoluted, which is a shame since I felt their stories in a vacuum were the highlights of the game. Yakuza 5 is weird mixed bag for me, it represents both the highest highs and lowest lows of the series, sadly by the end of it, I was sick of it and wanted it to be over.

      Rhythm games with cute girls are the manliest thing, don't worry about it.

    It would be amazing if this got ported to PS4 cause the framerate is pretty bad

      The framerate is surprisingly bad in all Yakuza games between 4 and 5, aka 4, Dead Souls and 5 so I imagine it was the engine causing them problem there. Not sure if a PS4 port would fix it.

      Kanny Boy I think it could cause Yakuza Dead Souls was running on the engine Kenzan 3 and 4 used and Yakuza 0 was running on 5's engine and it runs great on PS4

      I loved the village bit but it does stall the plot yeah. I thought the prison was worse tho.
