    This video helped me take my first VP44 out. You guys are amazing and I will be ordering my new VP44 through you next week! 21:42 Only step I got hung up on was getting the key at the 12 o’clock position. I finally realized I could use the alternator nut and spin it counter-clockwise with a breaker bar and socket. A slow process but it worked great. Advice for those reading…just barely crack the VP44 nut loose, then rotate the key up. If the nut is on there tight, it will throw your key off from your 12 o’clock position again. Then you have to spin it another revolution all over again. Trying to spin the alternator clockwise loosens the belt tensioner and the belt will slip on the pulleys which will not rotate your engine and ultimately the VP44 gear.

    This post is a well deserved compliment to this video!! In short, a child could change a vp44 after watching this video!! I actually ordered their "pump puller " due to this video. I actually pulled my pump back out thinking all went in too easy! Yet, white paint was still perfect & added a pin dot of red dead center & ALL slipped back in perfect again! As far as bleeding the truck on first start, Since alone, I cracked all but #2. ( tight pre-horn) & hit starter counting to 6 seconds. ALL 5 injectors were wetish & tightened all BUT #1. still cracked. Hit starter & truck started!! SHUT DOWN asap! Tighted #1. & ALL start & run PERFECT!! ( Bought my 2001 D2500 6sp new & a Cummins engineer recommended a Fass 150 & did it. Now, decades later same Fass still pumping 16oz. in under 3 seconds & 15-16 psi. ) Anyway, GREAT VIDEO!! Watch this video & if you can change a starter... change your vp44 yourself!!

    It seems the vp44 engine is way under rated given all the problems other trucks have. So what if you gotta change a pump out every 150,000 miles or whatever the norm is. I think these engines are one of the best ever made.

    I literally just got back from buying my first 24 valve,I had been working on a deal for this truck for over a year now,it’s a 98.5 Laramie slt,4wd,quad cab,all power,leather interior,black and a beast.I had it shipped from my home town in Maryland back to Florida where I live now,so thank you for your knowledge…I’m anxiously awaiting its arrival right now…oh yeah,it’s bone stock except for a muffler deleted and flex piped,that’s it! She’s got 282k on her and zero blow bye…thanks again

    The gear puller will also help the VP pop out of the gear case if you keep tightening it down a bit more past the gear popping off. This uses the gear against the front cover to help push the VP out. Works great.

    GREAT VIDEO. I have installed a few 7100 pumps and never had issues. I installed a VP44 on a tappet cover gasket job. We could not get the engine to start for beans. No codes in the box. Disconnected pump and pulled the standard 1682 something code... no ECM com to pump. Lift pump is a rapter pump that appears in good shape.

    On removing the nut and lock washer from the pump I stuff a small rag in, around and below the nut with a part of the rag hanging out the timing cover so that there is absolutely no possibility of the nut, washer or key falling into the case. Just a small, simple step to prevent a straightforward pump swap from turning into a nightmare.

I have an 2002 dodge and due to a vp44 failure, purchased your Combo kit which includes the VP44, a FASS fuel Pump and the 3 position Edge tuner. I later purchased the G&R fuel Sump after watching your video on that. It seems to me that there are a few parts missing from this story. What is the cleanest way to remove the stock fuel filter . What are the things to watch for? How does the return line and that 3 way fitting fit with the FASS fuel pump system?

      If you have to bar the engine, you can purchase a barring tool, or put something on the harmonic balancer bolt and have someone hold that while you loosen the VP nut. I always just gave the wrench a good smack with my hand and that loosened it up.

    What would cause my pump gear to run on top of my keyway? I put a new pump on and it ran rough. Took it off and sent it back and they told me my pump gear rode on top of the keyway and damaged the keyway. Ant advise I appreciate it

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  6 месяцев назад

      We usually find that the keyway was missed on installation, not by actually having the gear turn independently of the pump shaft. That could happen, however it would have to start with a missed keyway.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  2 года назад

      If you park your truck nose up or downhill, does the problem go away? If so, its most definitely a leakdown issue. Could be anywhere really, but most of the times it usually is the long return line coming from the VP pump back to the 3 way T at the back of the motor.

  • @wg4405

    Change the tappet cover gasket or cover if you have lots of miles on the truck . Mine just started leaking at 220, 000 . I had to take the other three injector lines off , not that big of deal . I could not get the tappet cover off without taking them off. I'm going back with a aluminum cover . You will have to take that lifting eye bracket off to loosen number 6 injector line . I did the line with a long wrench but a shorty wrench will work better but long wrench wasn't a problem .

      We have a very old VP44 install video that is two parts. Some things have changed since then and this one is more comprehensive. We also show the bleeding procedure for the new pump more in-depth.

      It's a party up in here, huh? Now delete this comment as well, Thoroughbred Diesel and maybe at least chime in with an explanation this go around unless you can only be troubled with censorship.

      If you can make that pressure fall “on command” then just verify with a manual gauge. If the pressure is truly dropping, then look for a restriction or possibly a failing lift pump.
