I bought the Monster Ram a year ago after a friend lost his engine to the grid heater bolt, but was nervous and hesitant about installing it myself. Your video was done so well that I now have the confidence to do it myself. Thank you!!! I did the turbo actuator replacement and radiator Y myself and it feels good to complete these projects instead of paying someone to do it.
@@1980Elplacerdeviajar The turbo actuator sits on the side of the turbo and moves the vans for the exhaust brake. Mine went out and I replaced it with one from City Diesel. Not a bad job, definitely easier than the Monster Air intake. Plenty of RUclips videos on it and specifically how to test so you you know you just need the actuator and not the whole turbo.
Wow!! 😃 Just finished watching this entire video over the last couple days... now THIS is the "gold standard" of instructional videos! Amazing... That said, after seeing the complexity of this install, AND knowing my own fairly "modest" mechanical abilities and skills, I am definitely taking mine in to Banks and have it installed by pros! I'm fortunate enough to live reasonably near Banks Engineering and really would like to have it done by them. Yeah, I know it won't be cheap...but this is the kind of thing that I am willing to pay to have done. For all of you who did it yourself...mega kudos to you!!
Hi folks. This is. Few words for the person who is considering installing the Bank Monster Ram intake. Just do it. Make sure you have all the tools needed, then do it. I completed my project in 10 hours. The most difficult part was loosening and tightening #6 fuel line. Everything else was easy, just time consuming. If I can do it, so can you. I am happy I did it. The detailed video was most helpful. Take you for the video creators.
It took me 10 hours because I was not an auto mechanic. I worked slowly and methodically. I'd watch a bit of thoroughbred diesels video, then I'd do a couple of tasks. Then, I'd watch the next video segment. I progressed that way until I was complete. I think my confidence and anxiety over doing the job slowed me down. If I had to do it again, I would probably get it done in approximately 3 to 4 hours, maybe 5 hours. (Hours will add on when you see the soot inside your engine and you clean it out) I knew I wanted the Ram intake installed, but I couldn't afford to pay someone qualified to do it for me. I had to do it because of the unknown. What would happen if that little nut breaks off. I would be screwed if it broke. So, lay out your tools as described in the video, turn on some music, and start the project. Ivam in Minnesota. I've had only a couple of cold morning start-ups. So far, the heater element is working well. My computer that tracts average miles per gallon did increase by 1 gallon per hour.

10/10 Install Video!! Wade has walked me through a clutch, turbo, and now a monster ram install on my 2017 Ram 2500. Couldn’t be more thankful for Thoroughbred and Wade for putting together these great videos. The sixth fuel line gave me some trouble on this install. I ended up using a crows foot on a three inch extension and used the same method to check torque on my lines during reinstall.
Nice through job. Three weeks ago my son in law and I installed this on my 2019 Ram. First time tearing apart an engine for both of us, and while we got it done, it took the better part of 2 days to successfully complete. Day 1 to install, and day 2 half a day to tear it half apart and fix the fuel leak we found on day one.. there were differences in the instructions and Banks video based on the truck year. We never found our banjo bolt and assume that was not included on that year truck. I had already installed the Banks Ram air on my truck and between that and the Monster Ram, certainly makes the engine and exhaust break a lot louder. I use the truck for pulling my RV and am on our first long trip now. I pull a 36 foot 5th wheel weigh in around 11k so not a monster but all I have is the 2500 not the 3500. Running between 60 and 65 on the interstates I average a solid 14 miles a gallon which I consider great. Withe the changes I may be getting another half mile per gallon than before but will take a few more trips to know for sure. So overall I like the mods. I would not say the performance improvements have been huge but we learned a lot doing them. Wish I had watched your video before we started as there were some great tips. My son in law just bought this for his 2013 Ram 2500, so now we get to try to do a better job this time. Thanks again for this video. 😊
I would recommend everyone install this if your warranty is up....I had the bolt break off and it destroyed my engine (2017 2500 with the 6.7). The dealer initially quoted me $32,000 for a new engine. However, because I was only over warranty by 2 months and 6k miles, they backed off but it still cost me $6k (rental $3500 and Install of $2500)because it took them 42 days to get it done. Then I found out it was not a new engine but a remanufactured engine. I also found out the actual installed price in some paper work (I was not supposed to see) was around $17,000 (they lied) for a "new" engine installed. The warranty for this engine is almost up and I plan on installing the Banks Monster Ram intake......Your video was very well done, so thank you. So if you are unfortunate enough to have the bolt/nut of death happen to you, play hard ball with the dealer.....I mean pitch a fit! Then watch them and pay attention. Especially if you live in Auburn California. They also acted like they were doing me a big frickin favor.....ugh! It should be a recall.
The Best Video by Far!!! Never knew about the Heater Grid bolt and the problems it can cause. So, I just went ahead and replaced it on my 2013 Ram 3500. Saved a lot of time and money watching this video! If anybody wants to make video on youtube about working on their trucks, then they need to watch and learn from this one. Great Job!
I installed one of these today on 2017 Ram 2500. It had the code for the intake air heater and holy smokes that bolt was barely hanging on. Anyway, I want to thank you for this straight forward and informative video. Just two things - I managed the #6 fuel pipe with a 19mm crows foot on a ratchet, worked like a charm. Two, I was surprised the kit didn't come with the egr pipe gaskets, we were fortunate the local dealer had them in stock. Thanks again.

Kudos for a very detailed and though install video, used it for my install on 2019 RAM 6.7 with 30k miles without any issues. Luckily grid heater bolt was still intact . Did not even need to view the Banks install instructions. I also installed the Ram Air and Pedal Monster, what a big difference in overall performance. My truck is a beast now, thanks Wade. Banks Power and Thoroughbred Diesel rocks !.

@@wildcat5496 did you end up with a Check engine light after install? I've read many reviews that Banks knows of the issue of "too much air" that triggers a CEL and they don't have a fix for it. How'd you fair? I have a '23 3500 6.7HO that I wanna do this upgrade on but don't wanna deal with the CEL.

Wade really does a great job of bringing up a lot of little things that would be easy to miss or even get the cart in front of the horse in a few places. First thing that I need to say is that I really don't like to do mechanical work. I am in construction so I am handy enough to do the simple things. I was really worried about the bolt problem and I am 1.5 years out of the warranty and at 63,000 miles on my 2018 3500, so I bought the Banks RAM Monster intake. I started up your video and would watch a few minutes then went outside to do what I saw for a few minutes, then back in to the video. I missed where you said to plug in the back blue plug but I thought about it as I was going . The point to all this is that if I had understood how much was involve from the beginning I might have sent the truck somewhere to have it done. I really don't have the extra money to do that so following you was definitely the best option. It runs great so you did a great job because you were able to show even me how to do it. LOL
Leaving the CCV cover off creates much more room for getting your hands in between the engine and the firewall for the work in the aft section of engine… connectors , fuel lines ect.

Just want to add my thanks to all the others. Installed the Monster Ram over three days last week due to location issues (did it in a covered parking garage near us). Had to cart tools and accessories each day, so took a little longer than most. Your video was invaluable when I had questions! Thank you for taking the time to explain everything, as the work is a bit involved, but well worth it! Had a code (P02E9) afterwards, but it was installer error, as I missed the plug near the MAF sensor. Love the product and feel good that I saved money, protected my engine, and got a performance boost to boot!

Although I don't own a diesel truck, I've seen Gale Banks' and other videos on the monster ram. So I decided to see what this was about. I'm beyond impressed! I do hope to own a Ram/Cummins truck in the near future, and I'm saving THIS video for step by step instructions!
What truly surprises me is how many manufacturing mistakes Cummings Ram makes. Along comes Banks with the solution. Why doesn't Ram pay attention to the issues and Fix It ? Ram has all the data to see the issues. The Banks Red Horn hands down looks 10 times better in the engine bay. But, the lack of intelligence in engine design stuns me.
@@davidhips8754 They have so much data. They know the amount of failures that are going to happen, when they will happen, and what the over under is for them to do a recall vs deal with lawsuits. Any manufacturer could create an actual bulletproof vehicle. But that would literally be the end of their productions. Most people would keep their vehicle for 30 years if all they had to do was routine maintenance. That's why we need new car manufacturer's who can develope a business model around longevity, that way they don't need to sell you a new car every 5 years in order to keep their lights on.
1:02:32 Saved my heart attack! The fuel rail is machined in a way that almost looks like a crack around the #2 connector port, and got some fuel that leaked out under that square. I was baffled on how it can hold 20k+ psi, but breaks over backing off a nut that's suppose to be 30ft lbs🤣 Great video btw, very thorough!

I bought the Monster Ram and Banks boost tubs about a month ago. Me and my dad will be installing it on my 2017 Ram in the next couple weeks. I will definitely be watching this video as we go
Installed mine on a 2020 last weekend. Took me an out 6-7 hours(actual work) the QR link for the install is good but the one I got was a mix of 4th gen and 5th gen. My truck has the CP4 that had 2 hp lines to the fuel rail that were secured to the block. The sensor connector the egr cross over was also in a in a different location and I had to use some creativity to get everything connected and routed out of harms way. But it was not terrible and on top of getting rid of the factory grid heater I’ve gained about 1.5 mpg with just the monster and the cold side boost tube. The banks intake and the hot side tube are next.

No programming required here. Airflow increase doesn’t wont trip a light, and neither does the rationality to the intake air heater. This install is seamless.
Great video, easy to follow. One recommendation, plug in the throttle valve connector before bolting down the banks intake. Little more difficult after everything put together on my 2010 2500 ram. Probably THE best video I’ve used to reference to do work on a vehicle.
Great detailed video!!! Not sure why you didn't cycle the ignition 5-6 times like you do when you replace your fuel filters. Your fuel rail was completely dry and needed primed.

How often do you see a grid heater bolt failure in your line of work? Is there a way to check it through periodic maintenance? What do you charge for installation at your shop in Kentucky and how many hours is the installation. You did a great job on this video! Thank you for taking the time to help the do it your selfers and letting us know what we are in for in such detail before making the commitment.
Thank you for the kind words. We no longer offer full service here at our shop, but the shops that partner with us see this failure in the field on a more frequent basis than they would like. One of the biggest advantages of this kit as well is the amount of airflow that we have increased just by getting rid of the restrictive grid heater, so that in itself in my opinion is what we focus on with this, and avoiding the failure is a part of that.

I'm installing this now. I have to say this is a great DIY video! I've watched this video a few times now, and it seems like there's something missing. You don't have a second alternator and the Aisin transmission. I was wondering why you have so much extra space. Probably didn't need to separate the trans dipstick from the oil stick. So far, so good.
Awesome video, not installing the monster ram but am installing the BD grid heater kit and couldnt find anything regarding the rear sensor or if i could leave it plugged in and hang it up for my 09, thanks a bunch. Even found a set of unopened HF flare wrenches and the biggest one fits the rail fittings 😂 subbed.
Is there not a concern with the bolt installed inside the horn coming loose and falling in the engine or over time, filling with soot where it can not be removed later if needed? Great video by the way, very informative!
Good question. The bolt is pretty long and I don’t think it will back out to a point that can be ingested. Your statement about the bolt filling with soot is correct. We hope that a revision is done on this product to include a hex head bolt instead of the allen.

Great video. When you put the magnet on the bolt that goes down into the heater hole, if you lose the bolt during the process can it be retrieved fairly easily?

I'm in the process of waiting for my intake to show up. I've started tear down. I'm de carbonized the EGR and the cross over and all sensors. I have a regular 24" step stool/ladder and it isn't tall enough or sturdy enough to get into contorted positions while reaching difficult spots under the hood. Many thanks!
You're welcome. That is a topside creeper that we use. It makes it really nice to get to those hard to reach portion of these modern engine bays that seem to be more and more common.
You deserve an Oscar for this video, terrific videography and description. I threw a P2493 code on a 2016 6.7 and have cleaned the EGR bypass valve, cooler, valve, bypass tube which was carbon'd up pretty good. I am wondering if my heater core potential restriction is causing this error and it is time to install a Banks?

Excellent video. I was following along as needed and when I put one of the caps in the fuel rail and saw bubbles from the bottom and got a bit worried but then moments later you explained that that was normal. Thanks for the great detailed video sir.
They do not come with feed tubes, and we do suggest changing them anytime you install new injectors. These are a perfect compliment to an upgraded turbo and will really take advantage of the available power.
So first of all on the very back fuel line instead of like he said a short box in wrench you can take a 19 mm Crow's foot slide it over the tube and down onto the nut with a 3/8 ratchet and a 3 in extension. Use it to loosen it and leave it on after you flip the fuel line out of the way so that when you're ready to reassemble it's already still on there just roll the fuel line back to the fuel rail and then retighten using the Crow's foot. Also, don't use a magnet to put the bolt on the inside of the ram. Use the little gripper retriever. You push the button and the four little prongs come out and expand. They actually grip the bolt instead of relying on just the magnet. Far less likely to drop the bolt and will actually hold the bolt tight enough to turn it and get a few turns on it versus relying on a magnet. Lastly, be very careful moving the fuel rail with the sensor still hooked onto the back. That rail pressure sensor broke on me before I even move the fuel rail. It's a very flimsy sender. Easily got one overnight from Amazon but the problem is getting the original off. Had to put the fuel rail and advice while holding the and with the proper size wrench and it took a pipe wrench with a cheater to get the old one to break loose.
I used your video to install mine and everything went great! EXCEPT I’m paranoid about one of the six horn bolts, the one that’s directly under the pvc oil pipe. (Top left, 1:17:41 ) You didn’t show how you torqued that one and now I have a low speed (5mph-10) whistle sound that’s intermittent, doesn’t happen in park. Hope it’s not a boost leak from that particular bolt from not being able to torque it and ruin the gasket. Came back to this video to double check my work to yours and see you didn’t show or state how you went about that bolt. Any recommendations on what tool to get in there would be great bc nothing fits other than a regular 6 Allen, used the non ball end bc I didn’t want it to break off but you can only get about 3mm of turn at a time from a really weird angle. My flex extension won’t fit, wobble knuckle bit won’t fit. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I wasn’t able to torque that bolt either truthfully, I had a pretty good feel as to what the other bolts had, so I felt my way through it. I think the sound you are hearing is the increased flow into the intake. As long as you aren’t seeing soot trails, I would imagine that you are good.

I installed one of these today on 2017 Ram 2500. It had the code for the intake air heater and holy smokes that bolt was barely hanging on. Anyway, I want to thank you for this straight forward and informative video. Just two things - I managed the #6 fuel pipe with a 19mm crows foot on a ratchet, worked like a charm. Two, I was surprised the kit didn't come with the egr pipe gaskets, we were fortunate the local dealer had them in stock. Thanks again.

Kudos for a very detailed and though install video, used it for my install on 2019 RAM 6.7 with 30k miles without any issues. Luckily grid heater bolt was still intact . Did not even need to view the Banks install instructions. I also installed the Ram Air and Pedal Monster, what a big difference in overall performance. My truck is a beast now, thanks Wade. @@wildcat5496 did you end up with a Check engine light after install? I've read many reviews that Banks knows of the issue of "too much air" that triggers a CEL and they don't have a fix for it. How'd you fair? I have a '23 3500 6.7HO that I wanna do this upgrade on but don't wanna deal with the CEL.

First thing that I need to say is that I really don't like to do mechanical work. I am in construction so I am handy enough to do the simple things. I was really worried about the bolt problem and I am 1.5 years out of the warranty and at 63,000 miles on my 2018 3500, so I bought the Banks RAM Monster intake. I started up your video and would watch a few minutes then went outside to do what I saw for a few minutes, then back in to the video. I missed where you said to plug in the back blue plug but I thought about it as I was going . The point to all this is that if I had understood how much was involve from the beginning I might have sent the truck somewhere to have it done. I really don't have the extra money to do that so following you was definitely the best option. It runs great so you did a great job because you were able to show even me how to do it. LOL

Leaving the CCV cover off creates much more room for getting your hands in between the engine and the firewall for the work in the aft section of engine… connectors , fuel lines ect.

Just want to add my thanks to all the others. Installed the Monster Ram over three days last week due to location issues (did it in a covered parking garage near us). Had to cart tools and accessories each day, so took a little longer than most.
Your video was invaluable when I had questions! Thank you for taking the time to explain everything, as the work is a bit involved, but well worth it! Had a code (P02E9) afterwards, but it was installer error, as I missed the plug near the MAF sensor.
Love the product and feel good that I saved money, protected my engine, and got a performance boost to boot!

I just got a Cummins and ordered this on a whim, glad I did.
What truly surprises me is how many manufacturing mistakes Cummings Ram makes. Along comes Banks with the solution. Why doesn't Ram pay attention to the issues and Fix It ? Ram has all the data to see the issues. The Banks Red Horn hands down looks 10 times better in the engine bay. But, the lack of intelligence in engine design stuns me.

They have so much data. They know the amount of failures that are going to happen, when they will happen, and what the over under is for them to do a recall vs deal with lawsuits. Any manufacturer could create an actual bulletproof vehicle. But that would literally be the end of their productions. Most people would keep their vehicle for 30 years if all they had to do was routine maintenance. That's why we need new car manufacturer's who can develope a business model around longevity, that way they don't need to sell you a new car every 5 years in order to keep their lights on.
1:02:32 Saved my heart attack! The fuel rail is machined in a way that almost looks like a crack around the #2 connector port, and got some fuel that leaked out under that square. I was baffled on how it can hold 20k+ psi, but breaks over backing off a nut that's suppose to be 30ft lbs🤣

Installed mine on a 2020 last weekend. Took me an out 6-7 hours(actual work) the QR link for the install is good but the one I got was a mix of 4th gen and 5th gen. My truck has the CP4 that had 2 hp lines to the fuel rail that were secured to the block. The sensor connector the egr cross over was also in a in a different location and I had to use some creativity to get everything connected and routed out of harms way. But it was not terrible and on top of getting rid of the factory grid heater I’ve gained about 1.5 mpg with just the monster and the cold side boost tube.
The banks intake and the hot side tube are next.

No programming required here. Airflow increase doesn’t wont trip a light, and neither does the rationality to the intake air heater. This install is seamless.

Great video, easy to follow. One recommendation, plug in the throttle valve connector before bolting down the banks intake. Little more difficult after everything put together on my 2010 2500 ram. Probably THE best video I’ve used to reference to do work on a vehicle.

How often do you see a grid heater bolt failure in your line of work? Is there a way to check it through periodic maintenance? What do you charge for installation at your shop in Kentucky and how many hours is the installation. You did a great job on this video! Thank you for taking the time to help the do it your selfers and letting us know what we are in for in such detail before making the commitment.
Thank you for the kind words. We no longer offer full service here at our shop, but the shops that partner with us see this failure in the field on a more frequent basis than they would like. One of the biggest advantages of this kit as well is the amount of airflow that we have increased just by getting rid of the restrictive grid heater, so that in itself in my opinion is what we focus on with this, and avoiding the failure is a part of that.
I bought the Banks Grid heater delete but used a different Air Ram, on my 2015 Ram 2500 and I can tell the difference in throttle response

I'm installing this now. I have to say this is a great DIY video! I've watched this video a few times now, and it seems like there's something missing. You don't have a second alternator and the Aisin transmission. I was wondering why you have so much extra space. Probably didn't need to separate the trans dipstick from the oil stick. So far, so good.
I appreciate it, and yes those two attributes would have made the install a little more challenging, but the concept and most steps are the same.

Awesome video, not installing the monster ram but am installing the BD grid heater kit and couldnt find anything regarding the rear sensor or if i could leave it plugged in and hang it up for my 09, thanks a bunch. Even found a set of unopened HF flare wrenches and the biggest one fits the rail fittings 😂 subbed.
How do you isolate the batteries? Do you remove the positive and negatives on each battery?

Is there not a concern with the bolt installed inside the horn coming loose and falling in the engine or over time, filling with soot where it can not be removed later if needed? Great video by the way, very informative!
Good question. The bolt is pretty long and I don’t think it will back out to a point that can be ingested. Your statement about the bolt filling with soot is correct. We hope that a revision is done on this product to include a hex head bolt instead of the allen.

Great video. When you put the magnet on the bolt that goes down into the heater hole, if you lose the bolt during the process can it be retrieved fairly easily?
Yes. I actually did a couple times and was able to retrieve with a claw style retriever.

07-2012 trucks, not much different. All components are the same, some in different spots. We hope to do a video on the early truck soon.
You talk about cleaning the throttle valve and map sensor before transferring to the horn. What do you recommend cleaning it with ?
I wiped them down with MAF sensor cleaner and a lint free cloth.

Great video. Many thanks. I got about 90% of the way through my install today, with your help. What ladder are you using to access the engine bay? I have a regular 24" step stool/ladder and it isn't tall enough or sturdy enough to get into contorted positions while reaching difficult spots under the hood. Many thanks!
You're welcome. That is a topside creeper that we use. It makes it really nice to get to those hard to reach portion of these modern engine bays that seem to be more and more common.
You deserve an Oscar for this video, terrific videography and description. I threw a P2493 code on a 2016 6.7 and have cleaned the EGR bypass valve, cooler, valve, bypass tube which was carbon'd up pretty good. I am wondering if my heater core potential restriction is causing this error and it is time to install a Banks?

Yes, we suggest reinstalling it. I think it’s a heat shield as much as a noise shield.

They do not come with feed tubes, and we do suggest changing them anytime you install new injectors. These are a perfect compliment to an upgraded turbo and will really take advantage of the available power.
How the heck do you loosen #6 fuel line. This is more than challenging for me
I actually bought a cheap wrench and cut it to be able to use back there. It's tough, keep griding.
So first of all on the very back fuel line instead of like he said a short box in wrench you can take a 19 mm Crow's foot slide it over the tube and down onto the nut with a 3/8 ratchet and a 3 in extension. Use it to loosen it and leave it on after you flip the fuel line out of the way so that when you're ready to reassemble it's already still on there just roll the fuel line back to the fuel rail and then retighten using the Crow's foot. Also, don't use a magnet to put the bolt on the inside of the ram. Use the little gripper retriever. You push the button and the four little prongs come out and expand. They actually grip the bolt instead of relying on just the magnet. Far less likely to drop the bolt and will actually hold the bolt tight enough to turn it and get a few turns on it versus relying on a magnet. Lastly, be very careful moving the fuel rail with the sensor still hooked onto the back. That rail pressure sensor broke on me before I even move the fuel rail. It's a very flimsy sender. Easily got one overnight from Amazon but the problem is getting the original off. Had to put the fuel rail and advice while holding the and with the proper size wrench and it took a pipe wrench with a cheater to get the old one to break loose.

Is the install much different on the gen 5, a 2023 HO where the trans dip stick is on the right side as well?
The 19-24’s have a different kit but basic install is the same.

I used your video to install mine and everything went great! EXCEPT I’m paranoid about one of the six horn bolts, the one that’s directly under the pvc oil pipe. (Top left, 1:17:41 ) You didn’t show how you torqued that one and now I have a low speed (5mph-10) whistle sound that’s intermittent, doesn’t happen in park. Hope it’s not a boost leak from that particular bolt from not being able to torque it and ruin the gasket. Came back to this video to double check my work to yours and see you didn’t show or state how you went about that bolt. Any recommendations on what tool to get in there would be great bc nothing fits other than a regular 6 Allen, used the non ball end bc I didn’t want it to break off but you can only get about 3mm of turn at a time from a really weird angle. My flex extension won’t fit, wobble knuckle bit won’t fit. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I wasn’t able to torque that bolt either truthfully, I had a pretty good feel as to what the other bolts had, so I felt my way through it. I think the sound you are hearing is the increased flow into the intake. As long as you aren’t seeing soot trails, I would imagine that you are good.
