    I use test lights all the time. Yes voltmeters have their place, but nothing compares to using a test light to actually test whether the circuit can actually carry a load. You can measure proper voltage on a wire, but as soon as you put a load through the circuit, it can disappear if you have a bad wire. I used headlight bulbs a lot of times. I have several set up for different amps.

    Wade,
    I have tested everything exactly as said in video including battery voltage on this 99' I've got in the shop and it turns over great but still wont start. Do the VP44 models "hummm" like the common rails do as you stated as a good lift pump test in a previous video I watched. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks for the detailed videos and advice!

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  Год назад +3

      No humming, but with the truck you are working on, if it’s a 99 and wont start but has good LP pressure and voltage to the pump, check to see if you have any crank signal (tach). A bad crank position sensor will keep the 98-200 trucks from starting.

      We will be able to help you diagnose better if you give us a call, 859 737 4966, but lets review this for others that are reading it. So you have power and ground to the VP, you have good LP pressure. The next thing to diagnose would be to see what codes are in the truck. Clear them and then see what comes back when you crank the next time. Is the truck cranking over at the proper speed? If it’s a 98-99 truck, are you seeing tach movement? If not, suspect the crank position sensor.

    @thoroughbreddiesel I have an 01 24v 5speed just put new lift pump on it and now that I’m down to 1/4 tank I fired the truck up and it threw a code p1688, and everything I read online pointed to vp being bad so instead of biting the bullet I found a used one that was only supposed to have 2000 miles off of a cracked 53 block. Put it on my truck bled the system and fired it up ran rough then smoothed out like normal but still had the cel so shut the truck off to try and clear the code which this time was a p1689 and the code wouldn’t clear and then the truck wouldn’t fire up. I noticed while cranking I wasn’t seeing rpm so I replaced the cam sensor because as you know 01 didn’t have crank sensor and at first it still wasn’t reading rpm until the truck finally started up after a lot of cranking. While the truck was running it would idle fine but as soon as you touch the throttle it jumps to 1400rpm no more no less. I just put a new apps on it and live data reads throttle position just fine. I shut the truck off again to try and clear the code and code still won’t clear and truck won’t fire back up again. Now as I mentioned the used vp only has 2000 miles but it has been sitting in the guys garage for a year or 2. Does this sound like a bad psg?

      ECM unfortunately. I don’t know why that set of circumstances happened in the sequence it did, other than it sounds like your luck is a lot like mine. I would say the constant 1688 code was an indication of something wrong. But on these trucks, when you have the touch the throttle and it goes to the moon condition, its ECM.
