7 Modifications Every Toyota GR86 Owner Should Have!

  • 👋 In todays video we go over the top modifications that are pretty inexpensive that you can add to your Toyota GR86, Subaru BRZ, Toyota GT86 or Scion FRS! These are modifications that are subtle but can add a more fun driving experience for this car! For me, the 2023 Toyota GR86 is such a fun little sportscar to drive and mod! It's very lightweight which makes it a great handling vehicle even though it doesn't have much power! Power isn't everything which is why this car can be a blast to drive!
    For the modification list, in no particular order, let's start with the wheels, tires and suspension! Right off the bat, these are going to drastically improve the handling characteristics and grip for the vehicle! With the right suspension, there are going to be several adjustments to make to really dial in the ride to your liking and the wheel and tire setup with also help with the aesthetic look but also provide better grip with a wider tire!
    The hood struts I just threw in because they are cheap, but so effective!
    The exhaust and intake are an obvious modification because who doesn't want sound! These are usually the first modifications to get some excitement out of the car! With this platform and the four cylinder engine, there's not much to do, but you can still get a good sound with the right exhaust and even from the intake!
    The short throw shifter is definitely something that I am considering but just not sure how I feel about it! It would definitely be more engaging and possibly quicker to shift, but it's not something that is necessary! It's more of a feel with how you like the shifter!
    The carbon accents are really a personal preference, but some kind of kit or accents definitely add to the lines of the car and you can really personalize your vehicle by adding parts!

    Our 2023 BRZ manual limited, totally stock, was absolutely brilliant earlier this month when we hit the hills around Bull Shoals, Harrison, Mountain Home, etc. in Arkansas. It's my wife's car and she wants to keep it stock, but I felt it was just great for semi-legal fun on sweepy roads.

      This car actually has a ton of ground clearance. So lowering the car a bit really doesn't affect much. Car rides a lot better and handles better too. So just depends on what you want. We have lowering springs for the 86 on our website. Good option if you want a good blend of handling and style

    On my 1st gen I had lowering springs, intake, exhaust, and short shifter.. I 100% agree with and will be doing them on my gr86 as well. I also recommend getting a pedal riser for heel toe (pedal is too low) and also a pedal commander or alternative for better pedal response, and removing the clutch spring. Oh, and an elbow cushion and led light bulbs

    The car is very good & fun outta the box. Tint, subwoofers are always 1st mods. Exhaust, hood struts & brake pads for what needs upgrading. Springs/camber bolts along with pads turn the car into serious sports car. I’d try better shift knob over short shifter that often rattle a bit.

    Suspension, light wheels, and better tires are a no brainer. I really recommended the short shifter. It feels really good. I'm also debating the forced induction as it will be a $5k expense. An oil cooler and big brakes can really help if tracking the car at least 10 times a year. This is the kind of car that is easy to spend a lot on upgrades but like you said, you can only take it so far with all upgrades.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 месяца назад

      Depends on how low you go. You don't have to slam a car to the ground. I hardly have any scraping issues around where I live. So just lower your car to a level that optimized handling without sacrificing clearance. Generally a 1in drop on a car is ideal

  • @NikaHollywood
    @NikaHollywood 3 месяца назад

    Short shifter length doesn't equal short throw (in fact you can have really long short throw shifters). Grabbing your shifter at the base isn't changing the throw length, just giving you less leverage.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 месяца назад

      Yeah most short shifters are actually longer underneath the pivot point. That's what makes the throw even shorter. However a physically short top part will still effectively shorten the throw. But generally you want a bit shorter then stock on the top, and a bit longer under the pivot to get a good shifter

      There's really no manufacture that sells a car lowered. A select few high performance cars would be. Can you install a rear fog light on your GR86?

  • @SLOBeachboy
    @SLOBeachboy 6 месяцев назад +1

    As someone who started driving (and racing) at a time when cars actually DID need a lot of modifications in order to handle halfway decently, it always cracks me up when someone insist that a modern sports car like the GR86 “needs” modification. The fact of the matter is it doesn’t need jack shit unless you plan on making it into a dedicated track car. As it is, it’s the percent balance between track ready and practical street car. Speaking of the track, I would never take this guy’s car out on a track because it looks as if the tires would hit the fenders under hard cornering and that is a very bad thing indeed, especially in a car you are going to be racing. Actually now that I think about it there is one modification that this car does need before taking it on the track. Modifications need to be made that will keep the oil pick up from running dry during hard right hand cornering as this could ruin your engine. You also want to install an oil pressure gauge so that you can verify that this is not happening.

      How do you feel the stock 86 performs? What are your thoughts after driving one with the stock suspension vs a suspension like what I installed? If you don't want to mod your car that's fine...I've felt a night and day difference with just the suspension on this car. It's already a great handling car, but the suspension makes it so much better!
      The tires will not hit the fenders, I know that from experience...
      How does a right hand turn differ from a left hand turn? I've been on the track several times and not once had an issue with right turns..

      From a practicality viewpoint, don’t muck around with lowering and ride height on a street driven vehicle … you scrape on everything and then work out your diff bearing, bushes, ball joints etc etc all get hammered … then you start scalloping tyres … then if you bingle it and don’t have the modifications approved by your insurer …. sorry you’re not covered. Also remember it’ll corner faster which means when you hit something you’ll hit harder and do more damage.
      Short throw gear levers are also fun until you start wailing on the changes then wonder why the synchros get rooted and the box sounds like a rock crusher.
      I’d get rid of the silver wheels, ugly!

      @@J_S209 I’ve never experienced any of those issues you have mentioned. Is this from your personal experience??
      I don’t scrape on anything and have zero issues. Had short throws in the past and zero issues..

    Why are we still stuck in manuals when the autos are faster?

      No one is “stuck” with manuals. What’s being faster have to do with anything?
      I prefer a manual, way more fun and engaging. If you like an auto, great, people are allowed to like manuals too..

      @@BrosFOURRSpeed that’s my inevitable path. My 2017 GT86 needs more power and a LS with nice choppy cams seems like a fun idea. I’d like to be able to beat my mom’s Corvette and my GF’s 135i one day.

    i'm sorry, but... It's 7 useless modifications every owner never should start with. and the first one is the most ruinable one.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 месяца назад +3

      Interesting, why do you think that? I wouldn’t say they are useless at all.. what mods are on your 86?

    • @alexeynikolayev
      @alexeynikolayev 3 месяца назад +2

       @BrosFOURRSpeed Yes, for sure not useless at all, however most of them are highly debatable (i just add some drama here;). First things first, and first one is what i never recommend to anyone to start with. I'd say that clever suspension setup is the most overlooked thing. The most of people thinks that just grabbin some coilovers will make their car a super race car. But reality here is far away from it, there is no super universal suspension, there is a lot of compromises you'll get trying to achieve the goals, e.g. having stiff suspension would work efficient on flat tracks, but you'll completely loose any grip on tracks where surface just a bit rought. Stock suspension is accuralety calculated, setup to fit the most common use cases, it has enough velocity for daily use and even for track (we're talking about sport car, not a SUV or E-class;). When we change them to some other, we have to be sure what exact usage we're looking for, just because we'll lose a daily usage comfort trying to put a stiff one, and we'll get a poor drivability and no grip on just slightlty rough roads (this is most common case i've seen). Moreover, lowering the car... oh yes - cornering gets much more fun, but the other side of the story - bumps, which was not a problem before - will end up by loosing the grip, just because there is no enough suspension traveling to "eat" that bump. And only one peice of story is bumps on a straight, but when it's on the corners - it may leads to losing control over car as it gets no grip, an as the finish - worst lap time, compromises at daily driving, loss of comfort, etcetc. So I have to say, that such kind of tuning is a last tuning you have to do, only when you pushed the limits of the stock and clearly understand what exactly you're looking for. Yes, for special cases, with having a clear goal - it's justifibly, but not as a first resort.
      First things to improve could be - good tyres (most grippy ones), good brakes (disks+pads - oem shape, but graded for your goal). That's it! Just start with this, and only after understanding and pushing yourself driving on this setup up to the cap limit - go further.

      @@BrosFOURRSpeed body kits - it's ok. however ir depends on exact kit we'll get. have to think over slight changes of aerodynamics and air flows, which is again for stock version are tested and verified for sure. with our modifications we may 1. change the balance of car on moderate speeds 2. change the flows, which may cause poor vents of brakes, radiatator etc. 3. slow down the car giving excess downforce 4. lowering the clearance 5. etcetc. But. If we know what we want and why - why not?) usually this mods not so noticable, but improves the look, which is important for 99% of "users")))

      @alexeynikolayev 3 месяца назад +1

      @@BrosFOURRSpeed exhaust. okay. sound - ok. but again, being a sequential - changing the exhaust should be followed with ecu tuning, as we change back pressure and flow dynamics works other way. usually we're not gaining any power, we're loss until ecu is not tuned accordingly. not super critical, and i'd say it's close to body-kits on a "weight" of this mod ;)
