Interesting bit of trivia: actor Eric Braeden, who played John Jacob Astor in 1997's "Titanic" is a survivor of this sinking.
Interesting thanks!
So, he was 4 when it sank?
Respekt to the chadest of survivors.
Wait really?!
@@Nefr_10 Yep. He revealed the fact in his autobiography. Said filming the scene in "Titanic" where Astor dies when the Grand Staircase is flooded was the scariest scene he'd ever filmed in his career.
A Forgotten Disaster.. the people on her just wanted to escape the war but they were soon taken away from life..
Correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t a lot of these passengers Nazi’s fleeing before the Soviet’s invaded Germany
@@connorkelleher2725 Not sure thats accurate at all, but very possible. My grandmother Was on this ship with her family when it sunk, aswell as many other families. She never said anything about that before her passing.
@@connorkelleher2725 Def a lot of Nazis back then... They didn't show the Soviets any different. No mercy on either side.
The Wilhelm Gustloff was initially spotted as the captain refused to sail with no lights on! He was a real smart-ass cookie! So the ships navigation lights were turned on and some other lights on the upper decks too...these lights were spotted by Marchenko of S-13 several miles away....so he focused his sub on the ship and the rest is tragic history!
Ok so this is really really stupid since you have no clue what you are talking about
Why did the Captain Turn on the Navigation Lights when there was a clear risk of Soviet U-Boats
They took Shipping Lane 58, which had just been cleared by minesweepers, who were actually coming back on the same route(they learned of this only hours after the decision had been made to be on this route). The danger of collision with one of the minesweepers(there were many) presented a clear danger of collision. It was the midst of night in the rough Baltic Sea. So the Head Captain(there were 4 in total, one opposed to turning on the lights) decided to turn on the lights since he believed the risk of Soviet Subs sinking the ship were nothing compared to the dangers of the Snowy night with a rough sea risking collision with a minesweepers.
In fact the area that the ship was sailing in at the time was an area where U-Boats had the risk of running aground, but the determination of Marchenko, who was almost court-martialed due to his 3 day disappearance from post, and a bit of luck prevented this. The reality was any sane U-Boat Commander would have immediately seeked for deeper waters.
@@rishnayak4692 Thanks for clearer explanation/ratification of the event.
Not Marchenko,but Marinescu
The lights were eventually turned off but it was too late
The Wilhelm Gustloff had multiple captains on board. They had disputes over what to do including turning the lights on or off. On the one hand, some didn’t want to hit any minds. On the other hand, they didn’t want to be spotted by a U boat. They turned the lights off eventually, but by then, it was too late. The Soviet submarine had spotted them and moved into position to attack.
A beautiful and fitting tribute, to those who, died. May you all RIP
Yes
She was under order to have no lights on, but because of a approaching fleet of German mine sweepers the captain feared a collision and ordered her running lights on. The lighting of her navigation lights was a beacon in the dark for the subs. The wilhelm is a unfortunate loss of war.
It makes me wonder how it would have turned out if the captain kept the lights off
@@hamschh Yeah, I think it was the _General Steuben_ also the _Goya_ must be considered...these ships went down with several thousand aboard.
@@_FunE_ I haven’t changed my underwear in a week.
She wasn't under orders to have no lights on.
The ship is confirmed to be a he because you need to do research on google
I like this video with the captions that describe the incident. Well done!
As always beautiful graphics and Awesome video i am impressed RIP the Wilhelm gustloff.
January 30th 1945, this is 29 years after the RMS Lusitania that was hit by a German tornado on May 7th 1915.
You mean torpedo just correcting
*Torpedoed
I didn’t know the Lusitania was sunk by a tornado
@@mythicscientific7326 it was sunk almost instantly by one
An EXTREME disaster overshadowed by the Titanic...
It's more because it was a german ship in ww2, where the defended people are considered war criminals, so i personally think that if it was an american or britanic ship, it was more known that titanic.
@@eduard-andreivaleanu7552 I don't think it's about the country the ship comes from. I think it's because it happened during war and because of war.
It sounds really bad but... So many people died in that time, it was overshadowed by so many other things. Nobody had the time to think about it.
You are so good at this projects I don’t even know how you do them like that ❤
I'm very glad you like them
The Wilhelm Gustloff gave priority to the evacuation of wounded soldiers and U-boat personnel. It was also armed with anti-arcraft guns. These factors made it an auxiliary warship and a legitimate target for Russian submarines. The civilians wanted to flee from the advancing Russian army and knew the risk they were taking by sailing in a war zone.
Had this been an Allied submarine commander, he would also have sunk this ship. Civilian deaths would have been 'unfortunate' just as the 500,000 German civilians killed in Allied bombimg raids; or the 200,000 Japanese killed by the two atomic bombs; or the 2,000,000 Vietnamese killed as a result of American action in Viet Nam. War is not meant to be fair!
It was an Allied submarine Commander that sank Wilhelm Gustloff, the USSR was a member of the Allied Powers.
@@eternal5930 they are general split as the did not fight together. The Americans and British are know as the western allies and the soviets the eastern allies. Technically they are all allies but it gets confusing when u refer to them together.
"War is not meant to be fair."......that says it all.
How could the Germans make the same mistake as Napoleon?
Kto sieje wiatr ten zbiera burzę, nie Rosjanie ani Polacy wywołali wojnę a Niemcy

I remember watching these when I was a little one.
The close up funnel shot never gets old
I believe that in a case of War. Passenger ships carrying Passengers even if it has Ammunitions aboard should be off limits and no matter what flag it is flying only if it fires or uses deadly force. like with humans. Deadly force = deadly force back is justified Like if you agree.
she was also carrying both Military personnel and a frozen deck gun
@@robertyoung3992 and? Doesn’t mean it was deserved.
To put some perspective here. This happened at a time when millions of civilians died in bombing raids all the time while being purposefully targeted by bombers for absolotely no valid reason while Gustloff had military personnel, equipment and was technically armed without being marked as hospital ship. The submarine commander for sure knew there were civilians but in no way could have known that it was mostly civilians. Loss of life is always tragic but war tends to be that way
This WAS NOT A WAR CRIME. It’s tragic. But that’s the very nature of war. She was an Auxiliary Military vessel.
Just read Salt to the Sea. It’s a shame this ship isn’t more well known.
Given the time period and certain people on the ship, it makes some sense as to why it's not talked about more frequently.
"Just read Salt to the Sea."
Don't tell me what to do.
Nice video as always, what soundtracks did you use?

Actually, it was a karma that cought them. Germans torpedoed a lot of wessels with their U-boats. And in the end their ship got sunk by torpedo, shot from Soviet U-Boat.
I love this channel

cause there was a old video and the sinking wasnt realistic

RIP to the 9000 people that died that night

*9,000 Nazis and their enablers.
Except for the Nazis
How someone can do this to people is beyond me, shows you how sick the human race is. Poor souls of that night, just taking a trip and they pay with their life’s. It was no threat at all but the Russians shot an easy target for what reason? None in my eyes. How can them people involved can live with themselves is beyond me.
War is an unfair and unforgiving thing. War doesn't care who or what you are. War doesn't give an inch. It will break you down and rip everything from you without thought. By technical definition, that ship was a "War Ship". It carried Nazi soldiers, weapons, ammo, and had a few AA guns of her own, while being painted Battleship Grey. Granted, it wasn't the battleship you might expect, but with what it had made it a target. I hate to say it, but the Russians had more than enough reasons to do what they did. Civilians die in war, it's something that can't be avoided.
I completely agree with you

Cool
whenever somebody submit to vengeance, whatever the emotional trigger may be and reenact the same behavior that they complain about, they automaticaly loses their claim to be more civilized and the right to condemn their tormentors.
gustloff was smaller and shorter than titanic but she carry 10 000 people on her i wonder how many passenger then it would have been to titanic maybe 50 000
The Gustloff was only designed to carry about 1500 passengers, which is about half that of the the Titanic’s maximum capacity. She was carrying so many passengers because she was evacuating German troops and civilians fleeing the Red Army advance into occupied Poland.
It was overloaded, as it was evacuating German Civillians
Maybe doubled
@me oh then she can carry a hundred thousands people
I doubt that the Titanic would have been able to carry 50,000 people. The combined weight would have caused her to capsize at some point, and the cargo space needed to carry provisions to feed 50,000? Forget about it. The stores of food needed to feed them for just one day would be overwhelming.
The Titanic's twin sister, OLYMPIC was used as a troop carrier in WW1. It could carry up to a division of 14,000-20,000 people and all their gear in one voyage. Hell, it even sank a German sub by ramming it in 1918. Considering that the ship was designed to carry over 3,500 passengers and crew, this was an impressive number, carrying 6 times the capacity.
The Gustloff was simply being crammed with Germans being desperate to escape the Russian advance into Poland. At one point, the ship's officers stopped counting the number of people aboard once it got beyond 7,000. It took decades for people to realize just how many people were truly put on the Gustloff. Especially because even though it sank with the highest number of people dying in one wreck, it was wartime, events like this were being censored by the governments that were involved, and so very few people ever knew about the Gustloff or paid much attention to it. It was just one more crisis to report in a time of many that were happening. The German armies were collapsing on all fronts and the Americans and the Brits and the Russians were massing on the German borders for the final drive into Germany. I can understand why not much thought was being put into what happened on the Baltic coast.
Question: Was this a case of mistaken identity or was it an actual target?
An actual target, it was a nazi war ship
It was an actual target cuz the captain of the Soviet sub thought that if he sunk the Gustloff he will be declared a hero so he sunk it
It was both. Most of the selected passengers were of theNazi party, and armed with weapons and was battle ship gray. The "innocent " lives were people who ran through the guards and boarded with out passes.
@@jamesbraun9842 you most be joking. the ship was evacuating people from their homes as the war was raging and coming to their homes. shame on you for stating this false informations about a lot of people who just lost their lives as civilians.
Why is the Soviet submarine looks like the German U-boat?The model problem? But it's a good video.

Its more deaths that the titanic,Britannica, lusitania,Halifax explosion, sultan and empress of Ireland combined
I do not think it is right to compare numbers because no matter what we are talking about terrible loss of lives there. But agreed that this accident is criminally unknown by public and probably that is one, due to the fact that everything was going on in the middle of Europe by the end of War was taking all attention plus the ship that sank was also full with soldiers and weaponry so many people think "Right who cares if the Nazi got drowned!" which is still sad since the vast majority of people who died were unarmed scared people who wanted to go back to safety...
This human tragedy deserves far more attention, that's for sure however I do not think we should compare the accidents just because one had fewer victims.
