I still don’t get how this sinking isn’t super famous, but the titanic is.
the titanic was the biggest ship in her time, and while she wasn't as famous as the olympic, she was still a big deal, and for her to sink on her maiden voyage was a huge deal. Another part of it was how long it took to sink, there were many different stories and pieces. On the other hand, the wilhelm gustloff, isnt talked about at all in places like central europe and russia because ww2 is a sensitive topic.

The Germans were not well liked around this time. The story was kinda buried.
The Wilhelm Gustloff is also known as the deadliest ship disaster in maritime history which happened around on January 30, 1945 and about 9,000 people were killed during that disaster

@@coiny1 The Dona Paz took 4,386 lives where as the Wilhelm Gustloff took about 9,000 lives. if you compare the two you'll see that the estimate of 9,000 is much larger than the Dona Paz death toll by 4,614 lives

The part where the people are stuck inside the boat really made me uncomfortable. Shows the talent that went into this

This makes me sad. If I remember correctly, the captain was told to keep the lights off. If he had listened, this situation may have had a different result.

The captain was asked to turn lights on, to avoid any collision with other ships
The accompanying U boat captain said stay in shallow water and turn all lights off. The captain chose to go into deeper water and turned on the green and red running lights to avoid a collision with other ships, which led to the soviet sub seeing and torpedoing them
Technically wrong, the captain said to NOT turn on the lights, but the officer on the bridge(1st or 2nd mate) disobeyed the order

It was such a great tragedy that it leaves everyone speechless, thought it was the Titanic but unfortunately it wasn't like that 😢😢😢😢😢😢
Such a tragic maritime disaster. It was an evacuee transport ship with thousands of children onboard and some of the captains saved themselves before many of their passengers.
it was awesome did you hear them all screaming much better the titanic they all were so much quieter then this which makes this so much more entertaining then that movie🤣🤣🤣

In reality the scene was probably worst than this. They show people helping each other get on the life boats and people trying to swim to safety. In reality the water was so cold that it is unlikely that anyone who went in to the water survived. Even if you were pulled out you would still freeze to death as all your clothes would be wet and all the life boats were full anyway.

Unfortunately, the ship was outfitted with anti-aircraft guns and was also transporting a lot of able-bodied soldiers and officers at the time. The attackers didn't know it was full of refugees, but despite that, the fact that it had guns and was transporting soldiers and officers put it in a different category than simply a hospital ship.

Unfortunately, even if he had seen that it was a cruise ship, it would not have mattered. All available German ships, including passenger ships, were commandeered by the navy to move civilians, military personnel and military equipment. By doing that, all ships became fair game

In this FRG propaganda film, it is pretended that the shooting down of the Wilhelm Gustloff was an accident, but - although it was a civilian ship - it was fired! That was just one of many war crimes of the Allies! Even if the Western Allies have committed more crimes than the Soviets. Especially the Americans and British (as they always do) had a lot of fun killing women and children, bombing hospitals and schools, preferably with phosphorus bombs, etc. As an American or British, I would still be ashamed in two hundred years!
