Super awesome swap - very inspiring! However, I'm having trouble understanding how this works properly without any ecu tunning. Seems like this works because the ecu thinks the auto trans is still there but always in neutral, but however again - seems like the engine rpms and other parameters would also be limited because the ecu thinks the auto trans is in neutral. I honestly don't know, but I'm here because I'm seriously interested in doing this swap. Please let us know more about your thoughts on this issue since you've actually done the swap more than once. Thank you so much in advance!
Great question. I just used the ECM from the manual truck and did the security relearn procedure to clear the VATS. Everything else was plug-in play. You will need to take the rear speed sensor from the automatic transmission and put it in the NV4500 if it is a 2 Wheel Dr. If it is a four-wheel-drive, then the speed sensor is already in the transfer case so nothing changed there. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out.
If your transmission is already from a 4x4 then you’re ready to go. The T case will bolt right up. At the end of the video you will see I showed a Yukon I swapped. That was a NV3500 with a manual shift transfercase. Having a full donor truck is the easiest way to do the swap.
Sweet... Do you know if it will fit in a 4x4 version? I have the same truck but is a 4x4 version , Mine is a 1999 GMC Sierra 2500 SLE 6.0L 4x4 Reg. Cab Long bed! Thanks....
Yes it’s the same process. Very easy if you’re familiar with changing a transmission it’s not much harder. I have done both 2wd and 4x4 5 speed swaps on 99-06 trucks.
I've been having a hard time deciding whether to go 4l80e or nv4500 when my 04 tahoe z71s 4l60e dies. I recently swapped in an L33 (5.3 H.O.) and plan on doing some power mods after getting a trans that can handle the power. I've always wanted a manual, my friend only owns them and I've driven standard a few times. I would like to move over to an always on AWD transfercase like the np149. What are your thoughts and experiences previously swapping into a tahoe? For the shifter is there a way to put in a short throw stick like I've seen online some places in the NV4500?
Nice both are great options! One downside to the nv4500 is a granny gear. You really only have 2nd-5th for daily driving. I would recommend 3.42 or 3.73 gears at the most. I had 4.10s in mine with 33s tires and 1st was almost unusable. You can get a short shifter for the nv4500 and I would have probably done that if I kept the truck. Best of luck you can’t really go wrong either way. Big improvement over the 4l60e.
@Back-Yard-Builds all the z71s came with 3.73s so that's taken care of. From what I can tell the biggest thing is swapping the input shaft on the np149 to the 32 sline on 4l80e and np4500. Thanks for the input can't wait to follow your stuff.
You just need to find a 4x4 NV4500 and it connects to the factory transfer case. Or you can swap the tail housing and output shaft but that’s a little more involved. Finding a 4x4 nv4500 is your best bet.
@Back-Yard-Builds Do you mean factory as in a NP261 or NP263? They came with both and I don't know if they bolt up the same. I want to do this or maybe the 5 speed Allison auto that came in the 8.1 and 6.6. I'm am wanting to build a minimum 600hp 408. And I would like more than the 4l80e. And what truck would you pull this transmission out of?
@ I used a NP261 on the 4x4 swap I did. The second swap was a 2wd truck. 5 speed Allison would be pretty cool as well! Transmission came out of the same year truck. Anything 99-06 will work. You can also use 95-2000 obs nv4500.
@Back-Yard-Builds Awsome. Do you think about NP263 will work with either trans? That's what is behind my 4l80e. And what all did you have to do to the computers to get them to run right?
@@gnashuasavage8887 I’m not quite sure. I would think it would fit. Just confirm the input shaft size and number of teeth. I’m sure you can find that info on the forms. Best of luck that build sounds pretty cool!
@@Yew5401 I used a nv4500 from a 1998 c2500. Any 95-2007 would work just fine. The older ones pre 95 have a different slave cylinder. Also you can use a nv3500 on the 5.3 if it is a stock motor. The nv4500 has a granny gear for first. I like the gearing much better on my nv3500 for an every day driving truck.
Guys, im having a problem with the clutch pedal bracket, there are 2 holes as the guy in the video said but those have no threads, so what im doing now is i cut a piece of metal, drilled 2 holes, welded 2 nuts and im tying to put it behind the bracket but still im having a troubles when im trying to align the piece of metal with bracket holes and its becoming harder if the clutch pedal is installed. You guys have any suggestions?
@@jmsjms3706 I used 3/8” bolts and a needle nose pliers to hold the nut until I got the bolt started. Also I found it was lot easier to take the pedal off the bracket. Press in on the spring loaded plastic pins and the pedal pops right out.
Technically yes, it will work, but you will need to swap the output shaft and tail housing on the two transmissions of your plan on keeping it a 2wd. I’d recommend doing some research on that first before pulling the trigger on the 4x4 trans.
Hey there, This is a list of what I used for the clutch. CC649034 Clutch Master & Slave Cylinder LUK 04201 Clutch Kit CT1082 Clutch Pilot Bearing SACHS NFW1050 Flywheel GM GENUINE 15027983 Clutch Pedal
Sweet truck if you plan on doing more of these I'd recommend buying HP Tuners it's super handy when it comes to stuff like this with Chevy ECU's!
@@TyTheCarGuy1 💯 it is on my list to get in the near future.

Nice job doing the conversion! What if you have an 4x4? I have a manual transfer case from a 2500, so what do I need to adapt to the NV4500? Thanks.

@ yeah I don’t have any experience swapping the input shaft of the transfercase. Shouldn’t be to hard if you have all the pieces.
If I can find a gm nv4500 I would like to do this to my’01 1500hd 2wd. The 4l80e is great but I prefer the nv4500.
100% agree! It’s so much fun to drive. Not many manual trucks left on the road these days.
What about 4x4? Do they make an adapter kit or any transmission that will mate up to the transfer case?
