I’m from western NC- specifically one of the small towns around Asheville. A disturbing number of people I know are suddenly homeless, have lost their crops, their animals… and here’s the thing. FEMA didn’t show up for DAYS after the storm hit, and even that I have to take on faith that they’re actually here because I still haven’t seen a single FEMA representative. Red Cross either. What I have seen? EVERY CHURCH WITHIN A HUNDRED MILES.
If anyone is looking to donate- here are a few that I’ve seen people from repeatedly: Brookstone Baptist, Biltmore Baptist, Hominy Baptist, New Life Asheville, and even the Mormons have been a huge help - church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in Weaverville. I’m pretty sure all of these churches accept donations online. A few of them were hit themselves and outs members have been left homeless- and STILL they’re out helping us.

As someone that is looking to get their dual citizenship in Europe, I don't anticipate equal rights and privileges as a first-class citizen when I relocate there, acknowledging the distinction between native and naturalized citizenship.

Yes..I myself was denied, despite having a disabled child I need to buy specific food items for that aren't available at donation centers. I haven't found a person yet that actually got approved.

Texas and Florida and all the Gulf states are used to dealing with these types of storms, and thankfully it usually hits flat lands. There are still plenty of problems with it but the challenges of helping people does not include inaccessibility. There are no mountain passes. But I can guarantee if Florida and Texas did have to deal with those conditions they'd have the helicopters set aside and ready to go.
If you live in Texas, you better give some serious thought to thanking God for just about one of the greatest divine providences He can ever bestow on you. I never thought I'd say that when I first moved here but I mean it from the bottom of my heart now. Texas is SERIOUS about our freedoms and about preparedness. As is Florida. But I'm so terrified for them with the size of the storm coming their way. Praying for all along the east coast and all patriots that they can make it to the polls safely, and for the innocent children & animals.

Hurricane Katrina proved that income/race actually matters a lot. The poor black low lying areas resulted in more deaths because they needed more rescues/assistance/food/water than the other areas.

Are you saying that Helene was a racist storm, if your data is correct? Or are you saying the mostly volunteer groups who are still digging people out (alive & dead) and providing supplies to displaced citizens are racist? As someone who lives in the area and who has friends in TN, NC & SC who was affected, I can safely say that no one cares about skin color when it comes to rescue efforts...except maybe the federal government. FEMA has let a lot of people down in these last 2 weeks, not just black people.

As a disabled man living outdoors for 9 years in a truck because I cannot get any assistance with housing, I'm sure glad that they can pull money out of their ass to house migrants who have never worked and paid a dime in taxes in this country. I love all the DEI policies that especially seem to exclude people of a certain color. If they can come up with the money to house millions of migrants, they can and always could have come up with the money to help our own instead of letting them live on the street.

THANK YOU for mentioning we are being denied. I myself was denied and so has everyone else ive talked to in the area. It seems like they are denying MOST people that tiny amount even though it was supposed to be for all people in the effected area to be used for immediate assistance to purchase food, fuel, medications, etc...and not as compensation for our damaged or lost property...per their own declaration of what the funds are.

She was saying marginalized communities have already faced issues because of non-marginalized communities so a natural disaster like this is EXTRA hard. She is not saying (not did I interpret her inferring) non marginalized people have caused these disasters.
Churches are always the help in the trenches. If you’re not sure where to donate, find a local church that’s helping volunteers.
At the time of Katrina, I was our church youth director. We did a mission trip to Biloxi, MS with 14 teenagers. We came from a Lutheran church. We overnighted at a Catholic church going down. A Baptist church opened their doors to us and maybe 100 other volunteers in Biloxi. We slept in two Sunday School classrooms. A retired Catholic priest handed out daily assignments from a stack of requests. On the way home, we overnighted at a Korean-speaking Lutheran church.
What I saw in Biloxi was church busses and church vans on the road. Tons of church vehicles! Plus, people like us in unmarked vans. That trip renewed my faith in God and his people, especially those young people. Just, WOW! Great kids. It was probably the most fulfilling experience of my life.
I hope your family is able to stay safe with the storm. I also have most of my extended family in Florida. Praying for safety for everyone there.

Re: Utilitarian principles vs Disaster Equity - This is chilling, as we know this will mean denying aid to those groups they find undeserving. Also just noticed their motto: "Helping People Before, During, and After Disasters", I'm guessing that's going to have to change to something that acknowledges privilege & the trauma of marginalised communities.

You’re such a rational voice. You have opinions i disagree with and some agree with, but even when i disagree i can sit and calmly calculate why. Your demeanour when you explain your point of view is so approachable that it allows me (and many others) to engage with your ideas rationally ourselves.
For real. This is how debates and conversations should go. Calm, levelheaded, carefully stating your point in a way people can understand, and then letting the other person do the same. Meaningful conversations are not born from throwing insults at each other and believing that you are the only person capable of having an opinion.
