Something to keep in mind as a Gloomstalker is that, short of someone with Devil's Sight, your allies cant see you in Darkness either. They technically dont know when youre hurt or down, and Healing Word requires sight.
Remember to actively communicate with your party and have some self sufficiency with potions and things like Absorb Elements to reduce damage from AoE spells that may be dropped in your space to try and flush you out.

I have a Gloomstalker in Icewind Dale, we just finished Sunblight (duergar) fortress. Between Umbral Sight, Disguise Self (to look like the other faction leader thats in the fortress), and the ability to speak Dwarvish that place basically became my playground and I could walk around with impunity.
Once I disguised myself, it just took a few good deception checks and clever RP to have half the fortress eating out of my hand.

I used a gloomstalker there also. Wasn't the most optimized but it was fun. I used a forest gnome. Adv on int Wis and cha saving throws was nice. I was also able to talk to small animals along us to find the elven place before able to get speak with animals spell (not sure the actual rules for finding it but using animals was the best way in our campaign).

I think it bears mentioning, if you have an Artificer buddy in the party... and they can afford to hook a brother up with that sweet sweet repeating shot... it would eliminate the DM dependency of the magic hand crossbow, and allow you to equip a shield which would bump you up to 21 ac once you have Medium Armor Master.
    Additional clever uses of Thaumaturgy:
Use the ground shake feature to "blind" or confuse enemies with Tremmor Sense.
Use the "opens unlocked door" feature to open doors from range to ambush / be safe from traps.

    • @theonlymatthew.l

I was going to make the same point about the Artificer. In a build that I would use I've actually incorporated two levels of Artificer for that exact reason. Another bonus it bears mentioning is the repeating shot affect also makes the weapon magical (obviously but I'm pointing it out in the mechanical sense as far as overcoming DR)

  • @Meichrob7

My second character ever was a Gloomstalker who multiclassed into battle master. The idea was to take the attack action twice on the first turn, getting the gloomstalker benefit twice. I also often used the precision attack since it averages to +4.5 to hit, making the sharpshooter -5 to hit basically negated.
If I was invisible that usually wasn’t needed and I could use them for the various features that add d8 damage to attacks, but in the underdark (we were running out of the abyss) enough enemies had tremorsense or something similar, that I needed to have options when I didn’t get advantage for free.

That’s a very interesting build. I loved the sinergy between the gloomstalker with handcrossbow and forgecleric for the magic handcrossbow. You are absolutely right when you say that the gloomstalker is probably the best ranger subclass. I made some damage calculations based on you dmg calculation video for a pure gloomstalker at lvl 11, having 18 DEX, CE and SS feats. I’m not even considering the first turn dmg for these average damage calculations:
Regular 3 HC attack: 15,15 avg damage
3 HC attack with advantage: 20,763 avg damage
3 HC attack with advantage and SS: 34,62 avg damage!
3 HC attack with advantage, SS and flurry stalker: 43,05 avg damage! (Considering you have a 64% chance to hit with SS penalty, you have 73% chance to miss at least one attack)
That’s a very good damage average! And he’s not even using any spells and not considering first round bonuses damage.
If you have players that don’t have darkvision, you might consider taking darkvision spell, so that your party doesn’t need to light any torches.
If you can’t benefit from advantage, at lvl13 you may cast Guardian of Nature or Greater Invisibility for that!

No long time ago i played a gloomstalker with crossbow expert+sharpshooter and at low lvls that pc outshone the rest of the party in damage dealing, but as all rangers it loose steam at higher lvls, in my case i mc into fighter but this build seems really good. If you could grab a magic hand crossbow i would have prefered other cleric domain, i like trickery for this particular concept.

My first Adventures League character was very similar. Half-Elf Gloomstalker with elf and dwarf favored Enemy but I did forest terrain. He is currently lvl 17 but the lvl 20 will finalize as Gloomstalker 9, Forge 5, Champion 6. I have 3 different magical long bows but I still like crossbow expert but in my case I was lucky enough to get an animated shield, +2 studded leather, a dex tome and a blessing of protection. So I have AC 23. So I have few bonus action abilities. I may need to try this in another campaign.

You should try to make a build based on Grappling. Its a very underused part of 5e thats stupid strong. I've come to learn all its rulings and everything and its really fun. A few things I learned.
    1. You can grapple with a free hand. This means if both hands are free you can grapple two targets.
    2. Grapple is considered an attack action, and works with Extra Attack.
    3. You can make unarmed attacks if both of your hands are full.
    4. Shove is an attack action, and works with Extra Attack. Additionally you can shove while both hands are full.
    5. Enemies can escape grapples by spending their entire action doing the grapple check, or shoving you away 5 feet.
    6. You can drag things with grapple, and if you have a flight or swimming speed, bring them into the sky or underwater for more shenanigans.
Grapple is so much fun. Basically if they don't have a teleport, it just holds things in place for people to wail on them, and can set up for an infinite prone condition easily.

    • @TreantmonksTemple
      @TreantmonksTemple  4 года назад +1

Fair enough. The misconception I'm referring to is that Identify doesn't indicate in its spell description that it doesn't identify a curse on an item, but then the DMG says that it doesn't (as being the standard assumption - with specific exceptions as you point out), which a lot of players are unaware of.

To take this class to level 20, I would take 1 more level of Ranger to pickup the Skulker feat,
and 4 levels of Rogue (2d6 sneak attack) Assassin (advantage and auto crit) and the Alert feat.
    Skulker:
You can try to hide when you are lightly obscured from the creature from which you are hiding.
When you are hidden from a creature and miss it with a ranged weapon attack, making the attack doesn't reveal your position.
Dim light doesn't impose disadvantage on your Wisdom (Perception) checks relying on sight.
    Alert:
You gain a +5 bonus to initiative.
You can't be surprised while you are conscious.
Other creatures don’t gain advantage on attack rolls against you as a result of being unseen by you.

You think about gloomstalker 5 with order domain cleric?
Voice of authority is awesome. It also doesn’t differentiate between spell schools, damage, action type, class spell list, or even if the spell is successful. Just spell slot and that an ally is targeted.
Channel divinity: orders demand is the command spell with changes made.
Orders demand: 30ft self radius, no creature type immunity, AOE(Any creature that can hear/see you), no shares language req’ed, Charm effect so defensive boost but susceptible to creature charm resistance/immunity, short rest dependent, not cast so can’t be counterspelled/dispelled.
Command: 60ft range, single target, spellslot/casting, req mutual shared language, can’t be undead, enchantment school, different command option.
If taking crossbow expert and using bonus action for first round spellcasting, you can utilize heavy crossbow first round and switch to hand crossbow 2nd round.
Embodiment of law: long way from enjoying since req total level 11, but potentially increases DPR drastically. Can choose between bless for non humanoids or hold person for humanoids.
Divine strike with physic damage is very far away but nice type to have.

  • @ChristnThms

Question: Considering how important the Sharpshooter bonus damage is to the overall performance, isn't the level 11 Gloomstalker ability valuable enough to forego some Cleric levels? I mean, even with advantage on the shots, you're likely to miss at least one shot each turn. This feature would give you a second crack at that, likely increasing your average significantly. The phrasing would seem to indicate that you make the same attack again, meaning that if you had advantage on the original attack, that you'd have advantage on the redo as well.
Which raises the question.. at what point does increasing accuracy with Shartshooter become more valuable than the bonus action attack from Crossbow Expert? I mean, does Elven Accuracy and a Longbow turning almost every shot into super-advantage, deal better average damage than the extra attack without the super-advantage? Of cource, freeing up your bonus action allows other things to happen, like Hunter's Mark, which add to the picture as well.
But then, that changes it from a Ranger-Cleric to a single class Ranger. The more you lean into the weapon use, the less value there is in spending action economy on casting.

With the new tasha's level 10 ranger feature where you can go invisible for one round as a bonus action equal to PB number of times per day, I think it is worth while to go until level 10 ranger. I know for this build we are assuming we'll be in darkness for the entire campaign, but for gloom stalker builds in general, that is fantastic way to get advantage on all attacks in the first round of combat. Especially if you multiclass into fighter and get action surge, you can attack 6 sharpshooter attacks with advantage on the first round. If you can get elven accuracy at some point, this would become very potent.

15:30 So my problem is that even with Darkvision, you still can't see perfectly. Creatures with Darkvision would still want to avoid the perception disadvantage in places where they don't want people sneaking it, so there would be light sources.

    • @PiroMunkie
      @PiroMunkie 2 года назад

You can choose the Druidic Warrior fighting style for Druidcraft which lets you snuff out 1 torch/campfire etc, or multiclass into something that gives you Prestidigitation (or another party member that has it) to be able to suppress 3 small light sources at a time. You don't need complete darkness across the map, just the ability to create pockets of darkness where you need them.
I'm currently running a Gloomstalker/Hexblade and I take any opportunity I can to remove light sources while I'm out of combat and trying to be sneaky. Especially if I know we are going to enter combat I'll try to scout ahead and try to remove enough lights to give me an area of darkness in which to operate. You won't always have that opportunity, but when you do you're an absolute menace.

This is an awesome video. I'm curious how and when to use spirit guardians with this build. If you can get it up before combat starts, then that's obviously fantastic. But otherwise, is it worth foregoing attacks to cast it? On the first round, for example, wouldn't I be giving up 4 attacks? And 3 attacks on subsequent rounds? Also, off topic, but I think dndbeyond has a bug with the armor class for this character. It should be 18, not 19 (15 for half plate + 3 dex). DndBeyond is adding 1 for soul of the forged, but it shouldn't be doing that since half plate is medium armor.

Actually, the damage calculations do not assume advantage on the attacks (as the Ranger doesn't even have that ability until level 3)

Does being "Alert" in your natural environment actually remove the PP (-5 adjustment) for vision, smell, sense...etc......??

What character builder platform are you using?

A 3rd level Aid spell would give people 10HP, not 15HP.

But Action Surge on gloomstalker is too funny + Elven Accuracy and maybe even Champion. Eventually you land a crit rolling 6 attacks on the action + 1 on the bonus action, that's 21d20 attack rolls on the first round.

I don't personally, but I can tell you that every time I make a build that isn't AL legal, I get at least 1 comment asking me how to convert it so it is.

Right on, to each their own I guess.
