      Hi FCP, here in sweden it costs around $1000 for the job alone if you leave it to a mechanic (parts not included).
      Thanks to this video alone i managed to replace both belts, waterpump, tensioner, pulleys etc and it worked out great. The only carjob i had done before on a car was replacing breakpads and breakrotor so im not in any way an experienced hobby-mechanic.
      Love your videos and many thanks!

    Thanks FCP for a great how to. I just tackled this job over the weekend on my sons 95 850 non turbo with your kit. A couple suggestions to anyone who is preparing to do this job. Make sure you have a correct serpentine belt tool. I ended up fabricating my own, but it would have been faster if I had the proper tool to begin with. I cannot stress enough to follow the directions when it comes to setting the timing. Check it as many times as you need to make sure that it is correct. Buy a new timing belt tensioner spacer. It is a cheap piece of plastic that I think should be included in the kit. I reused the old one and it broke in half during installation. Good luck fining one of those locally if you do. Lastly, take your time. You will find some of this job frustrating. Good luck.

    Great video, thanks! I used it to change the timing belt and water pump on my 1996 Volvo. Before you start the job, make sure you have a T-45 Torx bit. For the serpentine belt tool, I used a square block of aluminum, about 19mm x 19mm, and held it with an adjustable wrench. Remonving the timing belt was the trickiest part: pulling didn't work, so try wiggling and pushing it through the narrow opening. Had to take gloves off to really feel where the belt was.

    • @blargromley
      @blargromley 4 года назад +1

      I wound up cutting my old timing belt to get it out. the video makes it look so easy. I was terrified I wouldn't be able to get the new belt in after I cut the old one off - somehow putting the new one on much more do-able than getting the old one off.

    Out of all the water pumps you guys have installed this way (no sealant on mating surfaces) did any of them ever leak? Reason asking is because in the near future I will be doing the same thing on my 98 S70 NA and I just want to get a feel that things won't go wrong when I fire it up. Even though sealant is not recommended, I tend to smear just a tiny bit on them when I replace water pumps on other cars but on the Volvo I want to change that mentality. Great video by the way! Really appreciate FCP taking their time to educate Volvo owners :)

    I really like your videos, they give us the confidence to do it ourselves. I agree that providing an exact tool list would be helpful, especially before the parts arrive and the car is disassembled! Please consider adding an elapse timer from the start of the job to completion. While you edit the video to less than 15 minutes, it would be nice to know how long it really takes. At the same time time, would like to know how much time the service manual allots for each task.

  • @fcpeuro
    @fcpeuro  11 лет назад

    You'll have to remove the tensioner to get the pump out, you might want to consider replacing the tensioner while you have the components out, but if you can't you can compress it in a vice and use a hard metal pin (a nail or otherwise) to keep the tensioner open until you replace it. Hope that helps.

    I just discovered a new ticking noise with my Volvo 850. I just got back from a 2 week vacation, and started the car up for the first time, and surprise! The ticking noise varies with engine speed, but it kind of went away after about 10 minutes of driving. I was thinking I might be in need of a new water pump. I had the PCV system replaced about a year ago, if that's what you were thinking, because that's also a common cause of the ticking.

    • @fcpeuro

    In the video you are using a T-45 torx bit to remove a tensioner pulley. The working space to get this loosened is extremely tight. No way I could use my T-45 socket/bit to get in there. My plan is to cut off both ends of a T45 torx bit and set it in a 3/8 drive 5/16 socket and use a 3/8 strong arm to make the overall tool profile as short as possible. Is there some other option to get this loosened?
    (Mentioning this potential problem in the video would seem to be worthwhile.)
    Thanks.

    can I rotate the engine and adjust the timing after I replace the belt?

  • @rubensilvarocha

    Hi guys yesterday my 95 850 turbo went for timing belt, Water pump, tensioner, pulleys and serpentine belt replacement. The job was made by a very skilled volvo machanic. The thing is it now has an annoying whining most noticeable at 1500rpm coming from the belts area. Saw some other videos with the same whine and it seems the timing belt is too tight. The serpentine belt also was changed to the new route styling. Is it possible that the whine is there until the timing belt settles in? Its driving me nuts because the engine was silky silent before this job.

      @fcpeuro  10 лет назад

      First thing to come to mind was just that. It's probably too tight however this is an automatic hydraulic tensioner which tensions itself. I would make sure the belt isn't making contact with any components and maybe use a stethoscope to try and narrow down where the whine is coming from. I hope that helps.

    Great job!! I’ve got a Haynes book that explains that the pump bolts should be tight at 20nm, are you positive that is 15nm?
    Thank you!

      Hi Dan, the exact spec is actually 18 ft-lb, somewhere around there should suffice.

    Do I have to undergo all that process just to replace the water pump? no short cuts?

    • @donmoore7785

      Probably. The water pump is a lot easier to get in/out from the bottom - possibly the only way to do it. The T Belt may get in the way.

    So i just bought the t belt kit with the automatic tensioner.
    Problem is my car has a manual tensioner.
    Can i use the belt/idler/waterpump from the kit i bought and just get a new manual tensioner?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  5 лет назад

      Yes, it should just be the tensioner that needs to be exchanged.

    Technically as long as your timing belt is not broken you can make three of your own marks (with a paint marker) and still be ok. right?

    I am a female with a basic tool kit and an older Volvo that needs several expensive repairs. Your video makes this look fairly straight forward. I've ordered my parts from FCP and I'm gathering my tools. I plan to rent some of the more expensive items, like a timing gear clamp, and serpentine belt tool. I"m going to have my laptop next to me as I follow along with your video. I have a 99 Volvo V70 base model. I'm wondering about the breaker bar, and the extension used to turn the motor from underneath. This is my list of tools I think that I will need. Someone please let me know if I'm missing anything: Serpentine belt tool, timing gear clamp (is this one size fits all?), 30mm socket & extension, 12mm socket,T-25 torx bit, T-45 torx bit, 10mm wrench, a jack or ramps, snips to cut the belt (optional), red or white marker for notches, catch tub for coolant, coolant, gloves, breaker bar, and a mag light. Also, I didn't understand how you are getting bolts to torc to a specific lb of pressure. Is this another tool I will need to buy or rent?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  10 лет назад +1

      Should be good to go other than a 13mm deep socket for the drain cock on the radiator. Good luck! Let us know if you have any questions along the way, you can always call us at 1-877-634-0063

      He used a 3/8" drive torque wrench on the water pump bolts.
      Ramps will not work for this job because you have to remove the right front wheel. You will need a hydraulic floor jack, two jack stands and chocks for the rear tires. You will also need a 19 mm socket for the wheel lugs.
      Good luck!

      Thank you for all the great help and advice. I went to the auto parts store twice to take advantage of the "tool loaner" program. Both times I was advised to get a mechanic, and given phone numbers to call. Is there a conspiracy to keep women from working on their cars, or is this really more difficult than it seems? Either way, I had all the parts, and the recommended mechanic offered to do the job for $220. The parts store sales clerk said I would invest at least $100 in tools, so I gave in to the heavy pressure from those with more expertise than I. Maybe they will let me do the rear brakes....lol

      I'm disappointed with the work that was done. The bolts on the cover were stripped, If they couldn't torque these bolts properly, how likely is it that they torqued the water pump and timing belt properly? Wish I had done this work myself.

      Sorry to hear that. There's no excuse for sloppy work. The good news is that if they didn't do the timing belt right, you'd have a CEL. The water pump would have started leaking immediately also if the bolts weren't torqued properly. You can get replacement screws for your spark plug cover if you need them.

    What is the recommended mileage interval for replacing the timing belt? Belts deteriorate over time, so is there a recommended time interval for belt replacement even if the mileage interval has not been reached on a car that is driven very little? What brand of replacement belt do you use?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  9 лет назад

      +James Collinson A good replacement interval is 60,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first. We carry both the genuine and Contitech belts. Both are of OEM quality.

      I believe Volvo's guidance was 7 years, 70k miles. You need to know that often a pulley or idler is what takes out the timing belt on these cars. Not just belt degradation - bearing degradation also.

  • @fcpeuro

    You might want to try the assembly in a different order, try doing the tensioner first instead of last.

    Confused.... how is rotaing the crank to take up the slack ok, when you've got to have everything on it's marks, to stay in time?

    • @donmoore7785
      @donmoore7785 8 месяцев назад

      Yeah it isn't clear where that "slack" comes from. He didn't explain it. My guess is that the slack represents less than a rotation of ONE tooth of the crank timing gear.

    Please excuse my ignorance but is the Serpentine belt & Timing belt the same belt or are there 2 belts.
    Thank you

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  10 лет назад

      Don't excuse yourself, it's a totally reasonable question, they are two different belts, generally a serpentine belt will run accessories, e.g. power steering pump, a/c condenser, alternator, whereas the timing belt will coordinate the components within the engine, the valves and pistons for example, hope that answers your question.

    Hi, my s70 98 had done hydraulic tensioner and new timing belt at the local shop few days ago. All pulleys were replaced. They used Gates timing belt T252 . I have noticed that the belt seats now right on the edges of the cam sprockets. Also the belt on the tensioner pulley sticks out slightly past the outer edge. Maybe a millimeter. The belt itself has some fuzzy debris on the outer and inner edge, not much but considering just few days of riding I thought it's weird. The teeth on the belt look fine, no debris. My old timing belt was spotless. Guys at the shop told me that Gates belts are like that. Is that true? As far as tensioner's pulley having the belt sticking out: Is it possible that they lost the washer, which comes with the pulley on its mounting surface? Is it one of these washers you can remove or it's a permanent one. I am talking about part INA 5310090100 / ZT00901. Car seems to be running fine. The alignment marks on cam sprockets and oil pump are fine too, I checked all of it. What do you think guys? Thanks

    The bearings should be smooth and tight. If it has any slop or spins too freely, it is time to change that pump before any damage is caused.

      Yes there is an obstruction there. Also a little less of one at 9:00. Note how he slipped it in on an angle, from 9:00 CCW through 6:00, to get past the obstructions.

      +Alejandro Gonzalez ONLY if you have a model that uses a hydraulic tensioner. (I have a 98 S70 that uses a mechanical tensioner...) Make sure to check your VIN and to open up the timing belt cover so you can check which you have. There's no 98 S70 video of a timing/water pump install with the mechanical tensioner...
