Hey y’all! This video was long overdue since I’ve been getting so many questions about how I got into project management. Let me know if you have any other questions!
I love your videos, and omg I'm in Healthcare Information Management and I'm sick of it. Currently I'm lost and trying to figure things out. This video gives me hope.. ❤️
What are the skills, knowledge, and activities required to dive into the project management field? Especially, students keep doing during graduation parallel with study. Please make one video
Project Management is about People and if a PM doesn't realize that on day 1, they will fail. All PM needs to realize that there is a crucial disconnect between the way projects are planned and the real world behavior of resources. People get sick, other projects and their day jobs compete with the schedule, certain individuals underperform. Project management is really about people, and when you know that, you realise that managing the time of those people is critical.
I’ve always said that the key to everything in management is the people my manager was so metric driven and clueless about the dept and people she was managing. When I switched departments my manager focuses on the people alot more and shocker she gets the same levels of productivity from her people without abusing them.

I’m glad to be here. I’ve been in IT for long but want to transition into Project Manager what is the basic advice or something you suggest i work on to get me become a great PM. I did many projects in the past but not as a project manager but as an engineer now I’m trying to fit in PM and need help and coaching
How did you work on that management and communication? Currently being trained by a senior pm at the company I’ve been working as a receptionist for a year and a half. I have terrible people skills and am looking to improve on them in the business sense
@@cringesh1t427 I don’t believe you have terrible people skills ☺️. You may just be unsure of yourself and that’s ok and normal. Your receptionist skills are transferable as a PM. Start building relationships through curiosity. Connect with the experts on the team that do the work. It’s all about keeping the customers happy regardless of what your company tells you in regards to the project. However, with that said there are many advantages you can get from some form of training. Especially for project documentation.
Very true! Communication very important when there are many stakeholders involved. While a degree isn’t required you’re right some form of training/ education could be beneficial however, most of the skills needed could be learned on the job if the PMO has really good processes in place.

I've been out of school for five years now and realizing I also do not want to work in healthcare lol but I am looking into PM currently and have an upcoming interview for a role!

Thank you for posting this video !! When I tell you I'm excited and nervous about getting into this career with no actual PM experience is where I am. I have so many questions to ask and get a better idea on what paths I could take.
@@UlyssiaGayle Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I'm currently working in security management and transferable skills are there but I'm unsure if the field I have a passion for (Fintech) would take me seriously since my experience doesn't quite fit perfectly. I'm working on something external training to get me better equipped to transfer over. Do you have any recommendations or suggestions on a way to get recognized ? Are internships ? May Project Coordinator ? Any advice could be helpful ...
Project management is 90% communication. As long as you know how to articulate how your previous experience relates to the role you’re applying to I think you’ll have a high chance of getting interviews. I would suggest looking at internships or more entry level roles if you want to boost your confidence a little more.
If you have a bachelor’s degree PMI requires 3 years experience leading and managing projects within the past eight years. As long as you’ve done that you should be all set for experience!

Hi! I’m completing the google certificate for project management now. I’m on week two and saw someone got placement while completing it. Any advice or tips someone can offer while completing the certificate ?
THANK YOU! Have a intw for a creative pm role coming up and this really eased my mental. One of the only people actually transparent about skills and experience need to break into the industry.
Wow! Our stories are similar. I was originally a biomedical sciences major but switched to healthcare administration. Now I’m trying to get into project management.
It has been 2 months as a project management, i submitted as a joke and i got a call back! I got accepted. I majored in biochemistry and english literature so it was weird to be accepted.

Hey Ulssia! I've watched several of your PM videos and I love how informative and realistic they are. Do you have any insight on how I can get connected with other project managers?
I'm a Surgical Tech, and as much as I love surgery, I want to leave the medical field. I've been looking at PM positions, but I only have an associate's degree in Surgical Technology, and I found out about the Google PM Cert course which I am about to start. I'm also a veteran so I'm really hoping that I'll be able to find something using those skill after completing the certificate.
Hi ulyssia, thank you for the video. I have a question how did you deal with the nervousness of starting a completely new job/role? Did your company train you on the processes they use & have you shadow a experienced PM for the first few months or were you expected to know what to do?
Hi Alisha! My company has a buddy system. So every new PM has a PM buddy that helps train them on the company’s’ processes and provide support as we start to take on clients solo after our 1st 60 days of training. We also did a few mock projects during our onboarding phase to help put our learning into action. I was only nervous on my 1st client call but my team quickly reminded me that regardless of my previous roles held, I have the skills & expertise to do my job confidently.
@@UlyssiaGayle thank you so much for the reply! I’m currently looking to switch to a PM role in tech. I have product and sales manager experience at a corporate level but inthe construction industry. I’m hoping to switch over in order to grow in my career and earn more. My worries are I’ve never been an official project manager so I’m worried I won’t be good at it. I think that’s just my ego talking for me.
@@SephoraQueen2k you’ll do great! Product management is similar so it will be an easy transition. Good luck on your job search ! Get those tech coins girl 💰
can you devise a list on how to effectively pull information from stakeholders to manage projects...how to effectively communicate and ask the right questions
At my company our projects are either technical or research specific. We have every client fill out an intake form listing their org/project goals so that we can get a better understanding on how they’re planning on using the final deliverables. This helps our analysts come prepared with additional questions on our scope call. If your company doesn’t have a similar project process, I would look to creating an doc with a list of scoping/discovery questions to ensure every project is successful. I also would recommend having the main stakeholder send over important info BEFORE the project starts.
Sister, I want to admit into a college for PG diploma in project management. Will my social science background (e.g. MA in Political Science from U of Manitoba) be an impediment in getting job and having smooth promotion in program management jobs in future?
1st step is to decide which path you want to go down. Scrum Master and Project Managers have different responsibilities. I can’t provide advice for scrum master since that’s not my current career path. However, for PM- I’m sure you have transferable skills the main skills that are required for PM are Stakeholder Management, Scope Management, Risk Management and Communication, Communication, Communication.
Hi. Do u think I can work as a Trainee manager and do part time post graduate studies-distance learning assessments (no exams). 3 modules 1st sem and 2 modules second semester
I joined a bunch of business FB groups where they post they’re hiring for certain positions, upwork and networking. I personally prefer FB groups though.
Great video! My background is in management but I’m looking to transition into project management. I only have an associates degree and I’m currently taking the PM certification course at Google. Should I wait until completion to put the certification on my resume?
Hi Ulissya! great vid! you said about tons of small businesses that need help on freelance basis. Can you recommend any sources where one could find such opportunities?
Awesome. You already have the important skills required to be a successful PM coming from a management background. Wishing you all the success in your journey!
Hello, which apps/ website ps you worked as virtual assistant? Also in freelancing when a freelancer gets the first client is there any specific period that the freelancer has to work or just task related working and payment? Thanks :)
I have applied for PM positions and I am constantly getting denied. I hope you can help. Maybe it’s the way my resume is laid out. I have a Bachelors in Healthcare Leadership (admin). I am currently working as an ER unit coordinator.
@Lucero Alvarado Having a degree is ok but your really need to get your PMP certification. I have a Associates Degree along with my PMP certification and I’m a Project Manager.
I think it can be stressful if you don’t have a well organized PMO or work with people who don’t see the value of PMs. They can make things be more complicated than they should. Overall, work life balance is great for me and I love what I do.
The google PM certificate is an entry level cert. I would compare it to PMIs CAPM. The PMP requires you to have 3 yrs of Project Experience before you can take the exam.
Thanks for this insightful video. I'm currently an Executive Admin. Assistant, but serve in the role where I support all senior management. I have 7 years of experience. I have an Associate in Business Administration and Management and a Bachelor of Science in Management. I have to decide to pivot into project management. Hi, sorry I’m just seeing this! But I interviewed with 3-4 companies and made it to the final round with all of them and I was asked the following questions in various of ways: 1. Tell me about yourself 2. Why should we hire you 3. What type of projects have I worked on 4. Tell us about a time something went wrong in a project you were managing. 5.How do you prioritize tasks in a project? 6. What project management tools have I used? 7.what is my communication style? 8.How would you deal with a difficult stakeholder?
You don’t need a certificate to get started. You can get started by either applying to some freelance roles like (virtual assistant, operations manager, obm etc) or apply to project coordinator or entry level project manager roles.
Hey Ulyssia, I'm thinking about getting into project management cause I'm trying to make more money and a friend told me about it, I'm doing security right now.So, do u need a college degree to get into project management and is google a good resource to get certification for Project management
A degree isn’t a requirement for most companies if you have the experience that they’re looking for. I’ve never taken the project management certification through google but I’ve heard good things about ir
So wait. My community college is offering a 1 semester property management certification program. Then you go take you pmp. You are saying that is not necessary or possible because you need 3 years of project management experience? I have been a property manager for 4 years. Can this translate as experience?
Correct, you need 3 years experience managing projects from initiation to close. You don’t necessarily need the project manager title but you must be able to translate this experience on the pmp application
@UlyssiaGayle thank you!! Also. I see this one semester(3 month) 12 credit project management certificate program at my local college. I only have am associates degree in business and marketing and work experience. Would this help me look like a better candidate as well as passing pmp exam? Or... am I doing to much. I have been handling projects and lead roles since I was young and just became seriously interested in becoming a project manager. My experience is in real estate/ project management. I also just got my real estate license and not trying to be a realtor, so I am hoping project management in real estate is a thing. My apologies for the long questions.
Yes! Look for entry level roles such as project coordinator, junior project manager, assistant project manager. If you’ve been active in any clubs at school you can use those experiences to show you have the skills to do the job you’re applying for.

I've been out of school for five years now and realizing I also do not want to work in healthcare lol but I am looking into PM currently and have an upcoming interview for a role!
Lol that’s so crazy. I wanted out of the healthcare field when I was working closely with the clinical team but now I’m back in healthcare as a PM and love it
Thank you for using this video to motivate me to keep searching for a PM job. I pray i land one soon.
Good luck, you got this!
Great advice, experience is the best way even without prior experience. Super helpful for me trying to break into a pm role. Thank you!
Thank You !! for the video. I would skip over positions that were requesting pmp certs. Now I will just apply. With my BS in Business Management and Senior Client Analyst work, I'm hoping these companys will give me a chance.
Yes just apply, good luck!
@@UlyssiaGayle Thank You!

This was great! I’m currently a marketing manager but think I want to transition to becoming a marketing project manager! Definitely will be trying freelance to see if I like it! Thank you for this ❤️
You’ll love it! Good luck with the transition 💗
Straightforward very helpful and no bs. Thank you.
Thank you! I’m happy this video was helpful
Thank you for posting this video !! When I tell you I'm excited and nervous about getting into this career with no actual PM experience is where I am. I have so many questions to ask and get a better idea on what paths I could take.
What questions do you have?
@@kimbrown7908 but I would honestly just apply. All it takes is one person to give you a chance.
@@UlyssiaGayle Thank you for your feedback ! 🙏🏾 Greatly appreciate it n it'd be helpful once I start interviewing..... Wish me luck

If you have a bachelor’s degree PMI requires 3 years experience leading and managing projects within the past eight years. As long as you’ve done that you should be all set for experience!

The beauty of the US companies. They are broad minded unlike in the EU. Some countries are still too closed and restricts those who are seeking to grow in the professional field. It's more of like not what you know but whom you know to get the position. Your video is encouraging and thanks for sharing. It's the field that I want to transition.

Wow! Our stories are similar. I was originally a biomedical sciences major but switched to healthcare administration. Now I’m trying to get into project management.
Really? Pre-med life wasn’t for us then lol

My skills are definitely transferable. Im a LMSW. This was very helpful. I’ll start with making some changes on my resume. Thanks again!!

Great video! Spot on on the skills needed to be a good PM!!
This is amazing. Thank you for being generous.
Love your videos! I think you've inspired me to make a career change.
Hey Ulssia! I've watched several of your PM videos and I love how informative and realistic they are. Do you have any insight on how I can get connected with other project managers?
I would recommend joining Project Manager FB groups or connect with a few ppl on LinkedIn
Hello Ulyssia! Can you do a video over interview questions around PM and how to answer them?
Hi i would like to know, as a project manager do u work with Business analyst and is it connected somehow? How does it work?
Thanks Ulysses!
can you devise a list on how to effectively pull information from stakeholders to manage projects...how to effectively communicate and ask the right questions
No, there are people who transition into project management with various of educational backgrounds.
how do you interpret your freelance jobs into the cv as a project manager
Hi ,
Great video !!! I’m a finance Assistant looking for changing to an scrum master / project manager how could I do it ?
1st step is to decide which path you want to go down. Scrum Master and Project Managers have different responsibilities.
I can’t provide advice for scrum master since that’s not my current career path. However, for PM- I’m sure you have transferable skills the main skills that are required for PM are Stakeholder Management, Scope Management, Risk Management and Communication, Communication, Communication.
what microphone you use, sounds better than most i've heard out of a few youtubers.
in this video, I was using the Rode Video micro
Great video. I'm considering a career change to remote PM.

I’m a Project Manager
The PMP certification is a important one to have.
Hi thanks for the great video! What is your work life balance like and do you find PM work to be very stressful or can you get easily burned out ?
I think it can be stressful if you don’t have a well organized PMO or work with people who don’t see the value of PMs. They can make things be more complicated than they should. Overall, work life balance is great for me and I love what I do.
Hey lovely personality and video…good luck with the progress on your channel. My only question is what camera were you using for this video?
Thank you! I’m using a Sony a6000 w/ a sigma 16mm lens
How about google PM certificate, is it worthed and similiar with PMP?
The google PM certificate is an entry level cert. I would compare it to PMIs CAPM. The PMP requires you to have 3 yrs of Project Experience before you can take the exam.
Thanks for this insightful video. I'm currently an Executive Admin. Assistant, but serve in the role where I support all senior management. I have 7 years of experience. What would you recommend? I know the hands-on experience will teach me better.

Weekly status reports that outlines the project background & tasks at a high level as well as the project health ( on target, at risk etc)
Hi! Where do you start to look for freelance PM work?
I joined a few Facebook groups where digital business owners are in. Some of them post that they’re looking for Launch/Project Managers all the time. You can also look for contract roles on Linkedin
I graduated recently with my Healthcare Administration degree recently and interested in Project Management to upscale in my career in this field and tech.
Looks like a lot of people are transitioning from healthcare admin to project management. I say go for it. Project Management is a great career path and I’m happy I had the decision to switch!
@@UlyssiaGayle I am not necessarily trying to transition from healthcare admin to this. Healthcare admin is very broad ranging from management, Health tech, Consulting (which i currently work in), revenue cycle and a lot more and I think of Project management as an important skill set to have to level up within the industry or like you said maybe transition out of it, but my personal goal isn't to leave Health Admin, rather I am trying to be more marketable.

Please can you recommend the online sites I can get Project manager job. I am into IT,Networking. I am looking for an opening in IT/Network Project Management. Thank you
Is a bachelor's degree or higher the only way to get a job as a project manager?
no, there are people who have been a PM for years without a bachelors degree or certification.
Thanks for your video. I want to be a freelancer. Please can you guide me on that?
Hey girl, is there any way you can tell me what interview questions you had? I'm pretty nervous about them asking about my experience and I have none.
Hi ! I have done a paid training courses where all the aspects were being cleared by the trainer , who was the specialist . I can help you
Hi, sorry I’m just seeing this! But I interviewed with 3-4 companies and made it to the final round with all of them and I was asked the following questions in various of ways:
1. Tell me about yourself
2. Why should we hire you
3. What type of projects have I worked on
4. Tell us about a time something went wrong in a project you were managing.
5.How do you prioritize tasks in a project?
6. What project management tools have I used?
7.what is my communication style?
8.How would you deal with a difficult stakeholder?
I’m looking to get into it too. Is a certificate a certificate enough to get a start and what industry do you recommend?
You don’t need a certificate to get started. You can get started by either applying to some freelance roles like (virtual assistant, operations manager, obm etc) or apply to project coordinator or entry level project manager roles.
@@UlyssiaGayle will they need a degree or anything like that ?
Where is a good place to look for those roles/ good company?
No degree is needed. You can search through FB groups and LinkedIn
Do you think an 18 year old fresh out of high school can get a job in project management?
Yes! Look for entry level roles such as project coordinator, junior project manager, assistant project manager. If you’ve been active in any clubs at school you can use those experiences to show you have the skills to do the job you’re applying for.
I'm a project manager too at developer directory lagos
