    Jeff you seem to of used up alot of husband points! Poor Mrs Jeff was made to refuel several times, no radio, noise and rotten eggs. I recommend a lovely meal, flowers and possibly chocolate to regain some points! Great trip for you and the Datsun though. Thanks for taking us along!

    Your wife Is really an angel for standing all the noise and the smell, maybe a better isonorization of the cabin would help.
    You did a really good job in the car!

    Jeff, 240Z has an externally regulated alternator and of course a voltage regulator. These regulators can be problematic. I recently replaced my alternator with an internally regulated one and eliminated the voltage regulator. A little wiring mod is required but the results are awesome. Maybe the way to go for you.

    Liked your road trip. Good on Mrs. Jeff to put up with it being noisy and smelly.
    Eerily similar to the drive when I had just purchased my 240Z. We drove from Charlotte, NC to Chicago, IL. Things that were the same:
    1. Lots of road and wind noise, not very comfortable after 3+ hrs.
    2. We took a wrong turn and went down an unpaved road, big mistake not to just turn around right away. Shook us and the car to bits.
    3. We only had the stock AM radio. It actually worked, but was completely useless.
    4. We couldn’t fill up more than 1/2 a tank at a time or it smelled like petrol (gas fumes in the cabin).
    We made it 1200km (745 miles) in 2 days stopping for the night once. You can’t ask for more than that. Truth be told we shipped it on a flatbed the rest of the way and flew home. The Z car probably could have made it further, but we had given up. 🤣

      It's a smell you get used to very quickly so if you were still smelling it after 10 mins (let alone an hour!) it was pretty serious.

    Maybe you should get an internally regulated alternator. Keep things simple is keeping things realable, but not always efficient.
    Cold start problem is carbs' life you choose to live :D
    PSA (Peugeot & Citroën & DS) experiment EFI on carburator before going multipoint. But they are with upside air intake, not side air intake.

    Like Le Mans circuit a big part of the track is an open road with houses (by example Hunaudières, Tertre rouge, etc..). The percentage after the top of the mountain seems very important, I assume brakes during the race are quite suffering... 😱

  • @robwhite240z
    @robwhite240z 5 лет назад

    Hi Jeff, there are 2 plastic vent snorkels that go from the radiator support panel to the inner guard that you took
    off the paint under the bonnet , they blow fresh air into the cabin though the round vents onto your face and the positive pressure helps with the fumes and the vent hose off the top of the fuel tank is not working so you can only put half a tank of fuel in

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  5 лет назад

      I did check the vent hose and it is connected and clear so I don't think it is the issue, but I will check it.

    Mrs Jeff sat closest to the battery.
    Road trip was "good" its a little nerve racking the first few tests. At some point its just GO. If something poos up it pops up. Nothing you can do.
    Well carry a" road service card"

    Greetings from the USA and nice road trip! The car looks good and it sounds good. I also liked the footage on the race circuit. My only question is .... why didn't Mrs. Jeff get to drive on the track or other portions of the road trip?

  • @grayzbildz
    @grayzbildz 5 лет назад

    Great vid. How good is Mount Panorama! I have raced there a few times, and I can guarantee you it's a scary concrete canyon that is unforgiving should you make a mistake. That was a good road trip and I guess you have learnt some about the Z car (or should that be "G" car). Perhaps your fuel pickup has a split in it, hence it's not picking up fuel less than half a tank? I look forward to the fault-finding. Cheers, Andy.

  • @VacFink
    @VacFink 5 лет назад +2

    Have you considered that the fuel gauge might be right? I recall you had issues with the filler neck or evap line, you might not be filling it as full as you think. You might look at your evap and canister, make sure its fresh and placed where it works properly. Have a spare fuel pump available too, that one that went dry probably used up most of its life expectancy. Definitely more road trips with the project cars. If that's not the point of all that hard work, then I don't know what is!

    Jeff, the Z looked "at home" on the "Mountain", pity about the paltry speed limits.
    I remember my first ride, (road trip), in a 240Z, a friend had just picked up a brand new 1971 Z in a colour, like a tan or orange, he let me have a drive on a country road, with only the number of miles on the clock from Sydney, where he bought it, up to Muswellbrook in the Hunter Valley, where we worked, it was noisy and I thought the seats were hard/uncomfortable compared to my HK GTS Monaro, so things are still the same apparently. We didn't run out of fuel on my test drive but the owner encouraged me to take the Z up to the old ton, 💯 mph, to see if it'd do it, did it easy!

    I would have made fixing that alternator a priority. Not only was it over charging/killing the battery, it was cooking the ign coil and probably blew a few light bulbs as well. If its got a external regulator, just unplug it for 30 minutes, plug it in for 15 minutes, etc. Saves a battery.

    G'day from West Australia, ahhh Bathurst such a nice track to drive on😉🙂👍👍
    And those views from the top of the mountain makes the trip and small trouble sooo worth it🙂
    Regardless of low speed driving LMAO bet you got to see boy's in blue above 60 kmh 37 MPH.
    I followed one years ago and he couldn't say anything coz he would of had to give himself a fine, passenger had him on film yes film. Not digital camera🙂

    I had a big exhaust in my 240z. A mate upgraded his race car. I put his exhaust on my car. Too noisy. I put a muffler on it (just one) and it made a big difference. This and some sound proofing did the trick. It was still bloody noisy but the drone went away. I did Bathurst once. Hooned around. Not excessive but over the limit. I was young. When I got home my dad mentioned they had speed cameras. The next few weeks were horrible. Luckily no fines in the mail. 😁

I know there are other "tracks" that are on streets, They used to run Indy cars in Toronto, but after the race was done you would never know it. I couldn't live there it would be so tempting to apex all the turns on the commute too and from work. Thank you for sharing!
