I feel that one of the most underrated things about Heath’s performance is his physical acting. He’s so animated. Like the way he mocks his own goon or how fluidly he gets up from the truck. It’s in a lot of other scenes too, like in his fight scenes or during the initial bank robbery. He moves like he’s straight out of a comic book which is very fitting for the character.
The part where this comment fits perfectly is when he falls and the machine gun goes off and you see his legs flying in the air and the coat going along with it looking as if a clown fell
I still get them, I was there opening night in 2008, midnight viewing and hadn't seen a crowd reaction like that before. The pencil trick literally had everyone cheering in the audience, standing up the aisles....Cheers and clapping at the end...but we were all bummed that was Ledger's greatest but last performance....
That's what I loved about Joker. It wasn't about money, glory, notoriety, power... It was about breaking the core of what he viewed as a fake society, and ripping the fabric away that hid everyone's darkness. He wanted to show that nothing matters, and what people drew inspiration from really wasn't there. That's how you make the world burn. He succeeded with Harvey, maybe he could've succeeded with Gotham eventually. The perfect villain
He can succeed with Gotham if all those obstacles weren't there He just wants to force the real thing in people out Their chaos because really that's all it is These rules, code, morals, plans and systems are just ropes You ever seen like in a movie where humans grab rope and try to tie down a giant monster but eventually it breaks Joker is like the scissor he just wants to cut the ropes so the real thing comes out. All of it is exactly like real life We have all these rules and we think they'll save us.
This brilliant performance shows three things: - Realistic loss of balance occurring after a shock - The erratic nature of the joker. - His willingness to confront the batman exceeding attention for his own physical integrity. Nonchalant, chaotic and unstoppable, he will fight no matter how hard his body gives him up. He only lives for that, he knows it. Masterpiece of method acting by H.L, quasi-metaphysical, he became the joker, he literally transcended the character. The fact that a performance persists even after several years is correlated to the sincerity of the emotions emitted by the actor, 14 years have passed and his performance remains among the best. Unforgettable.
If Black Panther was mentioned anywhere in the comments section, The Dork Knight fans would start crying because Black Panther thrashed TDK in every possible way.

The deeper point that most people miss is that The Joker wants to die. He is miserable, alone and demon possessed. Batman is the only person powerful enough to kill a demon so strong that possesses him. That's the real reason The Joker is obsessed with him. Hopefully one day the Batman will face reality and put the Joker out of his miserable existence.

@@jackierocha5096 man, you're the type of person i wrote my other comment about. Where the joker hesitates to kill the banker who almost killed him at the beginning of the movie and then takes his shotgun, and then he is seen wielding that shotgun at numerous scenes up until the truck crash. This is the only person in the film the joker shows any hesitation in killing. And then he takes possession of the weapon that almost ended him. It reminds me of a philosophy spoken about by Jordan Peterson where you have to asymilate the objects of terror or fear in your life and bend them to your will. The gun almost killed joker, joker asymilated it, and used it in his crimes. And that he didn't kill the banker because he respected something in his character. That he was a person of action. He wasn't just coasting through life. When push came to shove, he grabbed his weapon and attacked.
@@donalddeluxe6407 but he did kill rachael. and he meant to kill harvey, batman just happened to save him. That was the entire point of that whole trap. They were both supposed to die. Joker just built in a small backup plan to tell batman the wrong locations for the two in the event he did happen to make it, the person he did save wouldn't be the person he wanted. That whole trap was designed to break batman mentally. That was joker's motive in the whole film. It's why he looked irritated when batman didn't hit him with the bike, and it's why he started laughing when batman threw him off the tower. He thought he finally broke him and won. Of course batman saved him, and he stopped laughing. That's why he said 'you just couldn't do it could you. you truly are incorruptible.' Joker didn't kill The dog gangster, but did order his death so... that's a moot point. The banker is still the only character in the film that joker had the means and opportunity to kill, and simply... didn't. There had to be a point to that.
This is literally one of the greatest scenes in cinema history. Despite my adoring love for Hans Zimmer, The lack of music somehow makes this 10x better.
Totally agree how genius of a decision that was to have this entire chase sequence not have any background score. Especially in 2008 it was quite revolutionary and a really subtle but powerful device that you don’t realize right away but the absence of music makes the whole sequence more tense
Definitely adds another dimension of tension as the music more or less is a beacon of how the scene will play out but without those cues, the whole sequence is tense. Nolan did that as well in TDKR as Bane and Batman fought in the sewer...
@@chethanforyou the problem is that, people really love EPIC ultra mega cool scenes so you gotta make very badass score play in the background or they won't know that it's a key scene. just look at the newer Fast and Furious movies, every three minutes has a completely new song in them and i was like.. really? you really need that much music to convey something to the audience?
He also did that in the Bane and Batman fight scene in Rises. It was also in the middle of the movie as well. No music just sound effects and intensity
I love how the Joker defeats Batman at multiple points throughout the movie by understanding Batman's code and how it makes him vulnerable. In the end he won because he forced Batman to abandon his morals in order to find him.
He also won because his goal when he first contacted the mob was to kill batman. Not the man but the idea, by turning batman into a villain he effectively killed batman.
Heath Ledger was the massive massive loss in Hollywood's History. Whenever I see any clip of this movie, always one question haunts me that he should have lived more.
@Fella Einstein not really. He was great in brokeback, and you could tell he really came into his element with deeper, and more complex characters. Being a villain in Nolan's Batman universe was a good move on his part. It was dark, and gritty with a big blockbuster paycheck. His Joker in this movie reminded me of The Crow.
@Fella Einstein you are just an Ignorant. Just watch his movies and performances in Two Hands , Monster's Ball , Lords of Dogtown and Ned Kelly. All these movies he did before Brokeback Mountain. And all are very good movies And even Daniel Day Lewis praised Ledger in Monster's Ball and Lords of Dogtown. And called as an inspiration. And after Brokeback Mountain he did Candy and I'm not there which both got critical acclsimed and Commercial success way before he played Joker in the dark knight. In fact Ledger's Role in Monster's Ball lended him to Brokeback Mountain. So better do research and then rant you imbecile moron.
I think they thought it was unexpected that Batman would come out RIGHT in front of the Joker, like he somehow knew exactly where to be to head him off. All the streets he could've chosen, all the places Batman could've come out (behind him, alongside, etc)... It's sorta unexpected that he just rolls out facing him like that. The sound design is awesome as well because the motorcycle keeps building, every cut to Batman leading up to that part, the engine is building revs and it ends with just a quick touch of quiet like alright, here we go.
The way joker is always making subtle jokes is just hilarious. Runs up to a dead guy in a truck and says "excuse me, I wanna drive" and when Gordon was arresting him, he said "could you please just give me a minute" actually pretty funny stuff for a psycho murderer

thats straight out of the comics, batman the animated series was the first time they introduced that aspect of their relationship in another media. tdk took this and introduced it to the masses who were unaware of this. thats why the joker and tdk was so successful because it took the best parts of the joker from the comics that the mainstream were unaware of and put them on film, aspects of the joker that have stood the test of time and have proven to me successful due to them standing the test of time and still being used my writers today like the multiple origin that alan moore introduced in the killing joke. aspects of the joker that were not introduced or used by tim burton in batman 89. so to the mainstream when they saw tdk it just made sense and the interpretation works so well due to this plus add on top heath ledgers performance, it was bound to be successful and oscar worthy.

@@grimmywizard To tell you the truth, I think Joker wanting to Die has a even BIGGER story. You see, in my opinion, there are two sides of the Joker. One side is the man who tries to be like everybody else, but fails miserable. The other half is the Murdering Madman we are used to. So, the First half knows that there is no way that he can have his normal life back, so he thinks that in order to stop the Joker's madness, he must kill himself. What Ledger did in The Dark Knight is Probably the Greatest Acting performance in Cinematic History. It's beyond our Imagination that how can this types of acting even Exist. Heath Ledger combined Charlie Chaplin's Demeanor , Buster Keaton's Fearlessness and Marlon Brando's Realistic Natural Method Acting all rolled into One and created his own Unique version of Acting in Joker which is completely Inventive. Ledger also took inspiration from Francis Bacon's Paintings , Psychotic Nature of Malcolm McDowell's Alex DeLarge of Clockwork Orange as well as Voice influence from Tom Waits and made it as his own. and he went to an Extream Length for his role even more deeper than Daniel Day Lewis did for his roles, as Joker character is a Dark and Psychotic which requires the Blend of Craziness and Control yet So Depthful range where an actor just Flow into some invisible unusual frequency where he just hit that Stride where he (ledger) could do no wrong because he's Untouchable and so Free, as for him he feels like an Emperor who doesn't care how many great actors or whoever standing infront of him ( Bale , Freeman , Caine , Oldman , Eckhart ) but for Ledger they all are his Toys and He just played with his Toys. it's like flying with some Sonic speed and occasionally an actor goes to the sound barrier.. and heath has really just tapped into something here, he just tuned into some Station which we can't hear. It's Natural Method + Unpredictable + Internal Depthful performance where even in some scenes and stills you can see the Humanity and Vulnerability of it as Despite of Joker is a Negative Character but still we all love Heath Ledger's Joker as some how we connect with his Ideology and philosophy despite of what he did is absolutely wrong as he tried to fix the world but by taking a wrong approach. Ledger just Flow Naturally with the Rytham. And those who question him are unaware of his talent and potential as they haven't seen his earlier work like Brokeback Mountain and Monster's Ball in which he has delivered The Dark Knight Caliber of performances. But still There exists a small yet vocal group of fandom that is convinced Heath Ledger’s Oscar win and the acclaim he received for his performance in The Dark Knight is a direct result of his death. The argument is that because of his untimely demise, his performance has been mythicised and ‘over-hyped.’ While Ledger’s death has doubtless served to propagate the legend surrounding his performance, that shouldn’t, and doesn’t, take away from the indisputable brilliance of what he accomplished with the Joker. His premature death has meant that his work in The Dark Knight will forever remain his magnum opus and the part he will eternally be associated with. Were he alive, an actor of his calibre would have given us at least three additional notable performances by now. In such a scenario, while the Joker might have remained his best work, it wouldn’t be the only thing people talk about when his name popped up, as is the situation now. Having said that, his performance as the Joker is worthy of all the acclaim it has received. With the help of Christopher Nolan, Ledger developed the character from the ground up, and executed it in a way no one had done before, or indeed, has since. The interrogation scene alone is an absolute master class. Ledger nailed everything, the unique look, the idiosyncrasies and bodily ticks, the voice, the movement, facial expressions, everything. It is one of the great exhibitions of contemporary acting, and perhaps the most exceptional performance of the 21st century, narrowly beating out Daniel Day-Lewis’ incredible work in There Will Be Blood. Heath Ledger has left an enduring mark on the cinema landscape, and even decades from now he will be recognised for what he did - delivering a performance for the ages, and one that occupies a significant position in the pantheon of cinema’s greatest accomplishments. His performance is not over-hyped; it is genius put to film. Ledger was right, his movies WILL live on forever, and through them, so will he. And Before emerging himself into the Joker Character in The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger didn't care about his Life and Family and also what kind of effect it would have on his body and Mental health because of he was so passionate for the Joker Character and he didn't care about money or his family or his life because of his Love and passion for the Art and for his work. And he has Channelise his inner demons (insomnia , Pain and exhaustion ) and his Heart breaking Break up with Michelle williams into his work. And He died Fearlessly for something he truly believes in and for his audience whom all creative artist owes to them (audience) because their (artists) work reflect and holds the mirror to the society. And Even he died but he will live forever in the heart of the millions. and I'm sure his final work as The Joker in the Dark Knight has given him the Ultimate Satisfaction as an Actor and he would have also asked himself, because of all these I'm here and this is why I'm doing all these things as an Artist.
I still remember when many people were trashing Heath when he was cast as Joker (even Jack Nicholson was furious about the casting) and creating an online petition for a recast Oh how the tables have turned now.....

Yup. He became the Joker made him real. Just a guy who is having fun. has no care in the world. This is the true Joker.
He's just simply over the top, way over the top than Nicholson's performance and he did it pretty well. This IS Joker
O headh legher ❤️
exactly, he is also hilariously flimsy and its the funniest and most entertaining thing to watch
The part where this comment fits perfectly is when he falls and the machine gun goes off and you see his legs flying in the air and the coat going along with it looking as if a clown fell

He can succeed with Gotham if all those obstacles weren't there
He just wants to force the real thing in people out
Their chaos because really that's all it is
These rules, code, morals, plans and systems are just ropes
You ever seen like in a movie where humans grab rope and try to tie down a giant monster but eventually it breaks
Joker is like the scissor he just wants to cut the ropes so the real thing comes out.
All of it is exactly like real life
We have all these rules and we think they'll save us.
Exactly and that's why he never kills Batman, he wants to prove even the Batman at his lowest point will be just like him. I love the idea
Well stated. He wanted to show that if you turn the screws, no one is an idealist. I don’t know if he was right, but it’s an interesting concept.
It just adds to it when what he says is true
Silly Goose, it's all a joke!
Imagine being so good at playing the Joker that people almost forget that's a batman's movie

What a successful
So good he died because he played Joker.
What a masterpiece
I’m sayin.. that character alone literally made the movie what it is.. iconic..
3:30 the way Heath gets up, falls down, and shoots the gun at the same time looks so fluid. It’s like it came out of the comics.
Brilliant performance!!!
It legit looks like something the Joker would do I’m not even joking lol
Omg that was so perfect and visually beautiful to see
This brilliant performance shows three things:
- Realistic loss of balance occurring after a shock
- The erratic nature of the joker.

To answer that question 3 and 1/2. Rachel, Russian mob dog owner, Chinese banker, and Harvey.
That's why he said 'you just couldn't do it could you. you truly are incorruptible.'
Joker didn't kill The dog gangster, but did order his death so... that's a moot point.
Sometimes, a composer's greatest strength is knowing when to leave what's on-screen as is
I love how the Joker defeats Batman at multiple points throughout the movie by understanding Batman's code and how it makes him vulnerable. In the end he won because he forced Batman to abandon his morals in order to find him.
that's what makes him the perfect antithesis and archenemy to batman he has morals and he doesn't

that's the main reason in the comics as well why the joker doesn't kill batman when he has the chance
thats straight out of the comics, batman the animated series was the first time they introduced that aspect of their relationship in another media. tdk took this and introduced it to the masses who were unaware of this. thats why the joker and tdk was so successful because it took the best parts of the joker from the comics that the mainstream were unaware of and put them on film, aspects of the joker that have stood the test of time and have proven to me successful due to them standing the test of time and still being used my writers today like the multiple origin that alan moore introduced in the killing joke. aspects of the joker that were not introduced or used by tim burton in batman 89. so to the mainstream when they saw tdk it just made sense and the interpretation works so well due to this plus add on top heath ledgers performance, it was bound to be successful and oscar worthy.
Certainly a very complex rivalry between the two

@@grimmywizard To tell you the truth, I think Joker wanting to Die has a even BIGGER story. You see, in my opinion, there are two sides of the Joker. One side is the man who tries to be like everybody else, but fails miserable. The other half is the Murdering Madman we are used to. So, the First half knows that there is no way that he can have his normal life back, so he thinks that in order to stop the Joker's madness, he must kill himself. But the problem is that the other side of the Joker fights back and he wants to go down seeing the world burn from the inside out.
The argument is that because of his untimely demise, his performance has been mythicised and ‘over-hyped.’
While Ledger’s death has doubtless served to propagate the legend surrounding his performance, that shouldn’t, and doesn’t, take away from the indisputable brilliance of what he accomplished with the Joker.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾Well said.
