Honestly as much as I love that scene with Kramer and Jerry I just die laughing at the outtakes where Jerry can't stop laughing. Somehow that's even funnier.
I was there for the filming of this episode. It took four hours to film a half hour of material. I was fortunate enough to have a few words with Jerry when he came into the audience before filming began. It's a night I'll always remember fondly.
Wow! Always regretted never trying to get into the audience there at NBC studios in Burbank. I lived so close by throughout the 90s and was a HUGE fan. Jealous!
"Rugged? The mans a goblin, hes only been exposed to smoke for 4 days, by the time this case gets to trial he'll be nothin more than a shrunken head." Jackie should have been a spin-off, even a brief one just so we could get more gold like that!
I noticed too, "la grande" or something like that which I assume is big. I don't speak Portuguese though so I was kind of guessing that was what he ordered. Thanks for the confirmation!
This is easily among my favorite 3 or 4 episodes and the main reason for that is the performance of Phil Morris, in this episode he demonstrated how he could have had a series of his own. Lots of great lines that I still repeat all these years later but my favorite of all might just be "your face is my case".
That's actually my Auntie Fern, and every time I see her I ask her about this scene because it's so impressive. She was on Broadway and was a Radio City Rockette, and says that Micheal was super nice and professional so it wasn't too hard and only took a couple takes.
@@remy_james Give Auntie my love and if she is single and into broke, ugly, fat, uneducated losers that live in their mommas basement, have her throw me a message!
Absolutely! I've done a lot of comedy! It is REALLY hard! You need timing and energy, and most importantly, you need a straight face! Comedy is a genre that really doesn't get the respect it deserves.
Michael didn't really need to say that he became irritated when the others, especially Julia, broke/corpsed. His annoyance is apparent in the show's outtakes, all the way through to the final season. In his Comedians in Cars episode, Michael says to Jerry that he regrets not making more of a conscious effort to enjoy himself. And I think that's fair. Michael's way of working, both textually and physically, was so precise that he felt he could only achieve _his_ desired result within a few takes, then it would lose something, or be harder to replicate. Julia often flustered him, because she was such an early riser (due in part to being the mother of very young children). By 10pm, she would, by her own admission, get a little "punchy".
@organizemyroom s Going to Jay Mohr's house saying it was Sugar Ray Leonard's house...great. Especially since Jay Mohr has not been particularly nice about Jerry in the past.
@Heather Anderson I agree wholeheartedly. That's why we never really saw him doing any other projects before, during or after Seinfeld. Sure he tried his hand at stand up comedy and we all know how that turned out.
I watched the blooper reels before I saw this and I could tell Michael was obviously frustrated when everyone else would laugh and break character. When you think about it, if a take is so funny that Jerry has the urge to laugh, it's gold, and if he does laugh, you're ruining the best take. He always calls it "the magic" and he is right.
Jesus, I watched this fucking show whether or not I wanted to every night for fucking YEARS. I watched this show when I was living in a vacant in New Bedford with the electricity strung in from an adjacent building that was wired.
What Michael Richards can do that the rest of the cast cannot is stay in character no matter what. It's not as off when the other actors broke they had control over it. Anyone who's been in a position where you're playing a character and you start laughing you literally can't stop from laughing. Stephen Merchant used to get so angry when he was behind the scenes during "The Office" and Ricky Gervais would constantly break character. Merchant said they were indulging themselves and they should just stop. Then he played a character on the show "Extras" with Gervais and realized that when the cameras are rolling and you are not supposed to laugh once you get the giggles you have absolutely no control over it.
bigsleep32 yeah but the people like Jerry are playing characters that are too much like themselves. Michael playing kramer was more out of his own personality which it's actully easier to snap out of it because you have to go deeper into the character. But Michael in general is a better actor.
Richards was by far the best at staying in character and keeping a straight face. He did almost all of the physical humor parts though. And he is so great at that, I don't blame the other actors for cracking up.
Love Michaels ethics and outlook on the work, but he must know deep down the amazing quality of his work is what was slaying his costars. He's really, really good. Seeing how annoyed he would get though I do feel like come on guys, keep it going!

I am a huge Seinfeld fan, this episode is lightening, I could tell Jerry had trouble keeping it together in the finished episode, he looked a little different in the scenes in his apartment after seeing Kramer so disfigured, classic American humour, brilliant.
The problem here is Michael Richards wants it both ways : he pulls back in rehearsal, and springs his actual gags on the cast during filming, yet gets frustrated when they break character. I’ve been yelled at for just this sort of thing early in my career. I found ways to keep material fresh, yet include and support my scene partners.
