thought this video was going to be about the lookout air raids which tried to utilize a similar strategy before fu-go. in september 1942 a japanese yokosuka E14Y dropped incendiary bombs near brookings, oregon in an attempt to start forest fires, accomplishing only minimal damage and no casualties as they were dropped from the wrong height and were quickly attended to by fire patrols.
decades later the pilot of the plane, nobuo fujita, was amicably invited to brookings for a local festival. he gave the city a sword that had been in his family for 400 years and repeatedly visited brookings throughout the rest of his life, planting a tree at the site of the bomb, and was given honorary citizenship just days before his passing in 1997. some of his ashes were buried at the bomb site by his daughter, and his sword is still on display at the chetco public library to this day.

Two interesting notes on this-
1. In 1985 Japanese women sent over 1,000 cranes to Bly as a means of apology for the deaths that the baloon bomb created.
2. Similarly, there was also an incident in Brookings (a small town on the OR/CA border) where a pilot dropped bombs- he then came back in the 1960s to apologize and gave his family's 400-year old sword as an atonement (there was also a story that he offered to use that sword on himself)

That's... Not how that worked out.
Ever since Japan was unified and modernized under the Meiji emperor, the US and Japan were on an inevitable collision course as they both had imperialist ambitions in Pacific.
Pearl Harbor was just a terribly convenient way for the US to finally fully face down their Pacific rival without having to be the aggressor. That aside, the real reason why the Japanese surrendered was due to the Soviets basically being moments away from invading Japan proper.

But, it occurs to me that overtly attacking a sleeping industrial giant is generally going to end badly for maritime empires that have to conquer to get access to resources like rubber and oil.

I remember hearing somewhere that Japan built a half submarine-half aircraft carrier, and one of the planes from this submarine/aircraft carrier dropped a bomb on Oregon, hoping to start bushfires. Luckily they put the fire out and there wasn’t any casualties.
And the Japanese pilot visit the area after the war and apologized.

But no, i think its more likely that those ballons just got pushed more northwardly by the winds and managed to hit that area of polar winds that sent them flying back westward before comin down and touchin down in Japanz havin crossed over Russia (the USSR)
There is a launch base for these balloon bombs in my prefecture. I remember hearing that it was chosen as a base because of its strong winds and its location on the Pacific Ocean. It's still very windy, and the trains are famous for often being shut down.

Besides the explosion in Bly, Oregon, there was another Japanese air assault on the continental United States, such as the Lookout Air Raids
There were also attack from Japanese submarines on the continental United States, such as the bombardment of Ellwood and bombardment of Fort Stevens.

Japanese plans always seemed to be unessisarily complex and unweldy. As much as people like to praise Yamamoto as some kind of genius his overly convoluted plan for Midway is one of the reasons Japan lost that battle.

If you’re looking for more bad maps ww2 week by week put a big map of axis held territories in January 1945 on their back wall and while they were making it someone accidentally moved the lakes and rivers layer super far west so the Great Lakes are in Montana and the Volga river follows from Leningrad to the Black Sea. You can’t see lake Victoria but I bet it’s in the middle of the Belgian Congo. Also, unrelated to that, part of East Prussia, specifically the exact borders of what is now Kaliningrad, is part of the Baltic Sea. Also the Aral Sea isn’t there

As an Oregonian, this is smth thats actually taught about, at least mentioned in passing, when dealin with US history around this time; at least by high school
Bcuz the only ppl in USAs mainland who were actually affected by this Japanese bombing attempt, were some Oregonian kids and a teacher killed near the end of the war bcuz they didnt know what was in front of them was an unexploded bomb waitin to be touched
The reason that family died tho is not just Japans fault here, its also very much USAs fault bcuz they **knew** about these bombin attempts but had kept them secret thru the war to not scare the public; and it cost the lives of USA citizens, my fellow Oregonians

Yes, this is a JoJoke in 2024 on, of all places, an EmperorTigerstar video, and yes I regret making it. Not enough to stop myself, but enough to admit it.
Did we forget what happened last year with the Chinese Spy Balloon? (Yeah, I know, Japan and PRC are two different countries.)
The point is, this is quite feasible, but probably was overlooked because it wasn't as dramatic as the events in Pearl Harbor, London, Normandy, or Auschwitz-Birkenau.

This is actually a large part of why Oregon's capitol has so many cherry blossom trees, and why so many Oregon cities have sister cities in Japan; the two places used this tragic result of a wartime decision to fuel peaceful cooperation btwn prev enemies
