1, I believe the bombs DID start forest fires, but not a lot more than usual. But it might be interesting to show a MAP where forest fires were that year. 2. I think that Japan also tried to drop disease bombs by balloons. It might have killed some wild animals.
From what I've heard, they never launched chemical warfare on the mainland US. They were about to though. A few Japanese submarines were supposed to go near the Western coast of the US and launch some sort of disease infested bugs. The diseases would kill people, animals, and crops. The only reason this plan never happened was because Japan surrendered before the subs could reach the coast.
According to: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_balloon "March 10, 1945, one of the last paper balloons descended in the vicinity of the Manhattan Project's production facility at the Hanford Site" . My dad may have found one of these as a kid. It was late WWII, he found a chute caught with a box attached to it. My grandfather was the local constable (rural Arkansas, Pike County) he told dad to stay away from it, then contacted federal authorities. They came and got it, claimed it was a weather balloon. Idk if one of those could make it that far or not, but they both said it was a hushed up and secretive recovery by the feds, which is nothing unusual either way
They were heavy duty balloons obviously. They were designed to make the journey. The biggest problem was that there was no way to control the direction they traveled

A tree was destroyed and locals put out the rest of the small fire. The pilot who dropped the bomb was honored years later by the City and his families Sword rests in the local library.
There's a lot that have never been found. I remember some hiker found one in a forest in the Pacific northwest years ago. Didn't know what it was. May be more in the vast wilderness of Canada. Other balloons got caught in the jet stream and swept into the Arctic.
The deaths in Bly, Oregon were actually caused by an aircraft bomb, rather than a balloon. The Japanese pilot, Nobuo Fujita, was the only Japanese aviator to bomb the mainland USA, and was tasked with bombing Oregon in the hopes of starting a forest fire.
