  • Alternate history is full of good ideas. Some ideas simply don't work out.They aren't solid enough to be videos on their own. I wanted to talk about some anyway, so here is just three alternate timelines I couldn't talk about before.

    Atlantropa wouldn't allow more water to evaporate than makes sense. These dams will allow for water to come in at whatever level necessary.
    Cleaning up the salt will take some time but it's not impossible especially if you have unlimited electrical power.

    • @essexclass8168
      @essexclass8168 4 года назад +27

      well, assuming we could store said infinite electricity in the 1930s

    • @vessbakalov4090
      @vessbakalov4090 4 года назад +17

      The Mediterranean evaporate more water than it inflows. See the paragraph from Wikipedia below. This means we can continually generate electricity. Dams are really good at water level control. So we can let in as much water as needed to achieve our goals
      Geological evidence indicates that around 5.9 million years ago, the Mediterranean was cut off from the Atlantic and was partly or completely desiccated over a period of some 600,000 years (the Messinian salinity crisis) before being refilled by the Zanclean flood about 5.3 million years ago.

      Continually? what, we're going to attach massive wires to machines to have them powered all the time for clearing the salt and then tie them to planes and trains and even more machines for extracting, refining, transporting and then infusing the soil with unholy amounts of nutrients in the 1930s?
      Or use gigantic batteries from limited light metals in the 1930s?
      If production was the energy crisis' only factor we'd be going full clean by now, You can't store hydropower and even transfer it for long distances without consuming even more materials for cables and batteries.
      And as for your stuff on the Mediterranean you're forgetting the Human element, which didn't exist then but totally would in the 1930s.
      A hotter europe leading to crop failures alone could spark insurrection.
      What i meant by my original comment is that even today a small change in water affects Humans the world over, in regards to the Atlantropa project there is no such thing as "a reasonable amount" without abandoning the point and purpose of Atlantropa, assuming people in the 1930s would even be developed enough to know how much "a reasonable amount" is.

    •  2 года назад +1

      I guess you are forgeting a "tiny problem": In Majorca there already a problem with the salt entering the phreatic zone due to too much extraction of water from it. And it has the rain to stop it. Now imagine a soil that has been millions of years underwater.

    Other than misrepresenting Latter-day Saints as being merely missionaries, I think your assessment of the alternate scenario is a realistic one. Unless the government was more hostile to early Utah, they probably wouldn't have left the union. They loved the constitution, but they were very repulsed with how well it was enforced.
    If Deseret became a state, I see some additional effects, mainly, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a much more significant impact on the broader US population.
    Covering such a large area, and having so much economic power, the church's influence would be much stronger, and likely grow much more.
    However, it is hard to say if this would be the case, as it would be harder for Utah to continue to practice plural marriage (though as a state they would have protections they didn't in our time.)
    Plural marriage may have gone on for longer with the state protection, or shorter with higher profile.
    I think that with the significantly higher population and economy though, that Latter-day Saints would be more understood than they are today.
    This video is an example of the little things that people do not understand about Utah and the church. In the alternate timeline, I think the church would be much less mysterious to the nation.
    There's so much give and take in this alternate timeline. I really think it's just a differing flavor of reality. Latter-day Saints have a greater impact than you may realize. When you look at well known Latter-day Saints, you will find many people in many different fields.
    We haven't had a Latter-day Saint president, but I think that it's not to crazy to predict we might have one in the future.

      Duke William originally intended to invade earlier in the year (I think it was August), but he was unable to due to strong winds in the English Channel. What if those winds weren't there and William invaded when he originally intended? Could he have beaten the English if they were at full strength (the Battle of Hastings took place less than a month after the Battle of Stamford Bridge, and the English were significantly weaker for it)? What would happen when the Vikings invaded less than a month after this alternate Hastings? Who would be the king of England? How would that have impacted human history? It's strange to think how much the wind impacted global history. I would be really interested in a video about this.

      @@whafflete6721 We do know, fairly well, since it's essentially happened before in prehistory.
      "Only the inflow of Atlantic water maintains the present Mediterranean level. When that was shut off sometime between 6.5 to 6 MYBP, net evaporative loss set in at the rate of around 3,300 cubic kilometers yearly. At that rate, the 3.7 million cubic kilometres of water in the basin would dry up in scarcely more than a thousand years, leaving an extensive layer of salt some tens of meters thick and raising global sea level about 12 meters."
      "In the empty Mediterranean Basin, the summertime temperatures would probably have been extremely high. As a first approximation, using the dry adiabatic lapse rate of around 10 °C (18 °F) per kilometer, the maximum possible temperature of an area 4 km (2.5 mi) below sea level would be about 40 °C (72 °F) warmer than it would be at sea level. Under this extreme assumption, maxima could be near 80 °C (176 °F) at the lowest points of the dry abyssal plain, permitting no permanent life but extremophiles. Further, the altitude 3-5 km (2-3 mi) below sea level would result in 1.45 to 1.71 atm (1102 to 1300 mmHg) air pressure, further increasing heat stress.
      "However, these simple estimates are likely far too extreme. Murphy et al.'s 2009 general circulation model experiments showed that for completely desiccated conditions, the Mediterranean basin would warm by up to 15 °C (27 °F) in summer and 4 °C (7.2 °F) in winter, while for a depressed water surface (i.e, an Atlantropa scenario), temperatures would warm by only about 4 °C (7.2 °F) in summer and 5 °C (9.0 °F) in winter (i.e, c. twice the severity of the worst-case doomsday scenario for man-made global warming over the course of the next century IRL- in the space of no more than 5-10yrs).
      In addition, the model results indicated global stationary wave response to the introduction of the topographic depression causes patters of warming and cooling by up to 4 °C (7.2 °F) around the entirety of the Northern Hemisphere. Today the evaporation from the Mediterranean Sea supplies moisture that falls in frontal storms, but without such moisture, the Mediterranean climate that we associate with Italy, Greece, and the Levant would be limited to the Iberian Peninsula and the western Maghreb. Climates throughout the central and eastern basin of the Mediterranean and surrounding regions to the north and east would have been far drier even above modern sea level. The eastern Alps, the Balkans, and the Hungarian plain would also be much drier than they are today, even if the westerlies prevailed as they do now."

    Really, no idea for the Ethiopian Empire?
    Ethiopia begins modernization in 1875 under its new king Yohannes IV. Yohannes had won the throne shortly before (1872), largely thanks to modern weaponry given to him by the British and is still deeply impressed by its effectiveness. He aims to establish his own weapon industry.
    He invites German military advisors into the country to help modernize the army. The German mission is finally withdrawn in 1882 as part of the Triple Alliance pact, but has provided a wealth of knowledge and technology. With their improved military, Yohannes IV wins a decisive victory at Gallabat (March 1889) against recently independent Sudan, but succumbs to wounds suffered in the battle during his way back to the capital.
    His successor Menelik II still signs over Eritrea to the Italians in the treaty of Wuchale (May 1889), but instead of rifles and ammunition he buys machines and mechanical parts to improve and expand Ethiopia's own fledgling weapons industry. Meanwhile the Russian Empire had also been supporting Ethiopia with weapons as well as tools and machines to keep the Orthodox Christian nation out of Roman Catholic respective Muslim hands.
    Strengthened by their slow but continuous industrialization, Ethiopia wins a resounding victory during the Italo-Ethiopian War (1894-1896). Negotiating from a great position of strength Menelik II re-annexes Eritrea and forces Italy to completely renounce the treaty of Wuchale. Ethiopia also annexes Italian Somaliland.
    Treaties are drawn with France and Great Britain to prevent colonial support for an Italian re-conquest. Menelik II threatens both nations during the secret negotiations to ally with the respective rival and to seize all their assets in his country if his territorial gains are not recognized. Given that both French and British industrialists have been building railways and establishing mines in Ethiopia, both countries withdraw their support for Italy. The following years are spent by Menelik to achieve actual control over the nominally owned territories and to subjugate the Oromo people that split his territories in half. What could have become Italian East-Africa is now known as the Ethiopian Empire.
    The reign of uncrowned child emperor Iyasu V beginning in 1913 was troublesome, but modernization continued. He barely avoided a coup in 1916, being forced to promise to never convert to Islam. The situation in Ethiopia barely contained, Iyasu thought to unite the nobles by joining the central powers and taking Somaliland from the French and British to unite the horn of Africa under his control, as well as annexing Sudan. Iyasu was assassinated shortly after his declaration of war against France and Great Britain and was succeeded by Tafari Makonnen (Haile Selassie I). Selassie was a much more cautious king, but with the whole country enraged and territories for the taking, the Ethiopian army marched into the colonial Somaliland, while seizing all remaining Italian, French and British assets throughout the country.
    With Ethiopia a member of the Central Powers, the Ententé loses control over the Red Sea and the British Empire is effectively cut in half. ANZAC and Indian forces need to be ferried around all of Africa, leading to heavy delays in reinforcements to the Western Front, allowing the Germans to break through the British lines and encircling the French armies. Ethiopia becomes the lynchpin that ensures German, Ottoman, Bulgarian and Austro-Hungarian victory in the Great War.
    Alternate historians are still unsure whether Ethiopia either mainly managed to industrialize through their own strength or the careful balancing of contracts with foreign capitalists given access to Ethiopian resources.

    Ethiopia already destroyed the Italians at the Battle of Adwa. Italy only won in 1935-1936 due to airpower and the use of chemical weapons... And yet they still struggled. Just my thoughts.

      Part of the reason that Ethiopia was able to defend itself so well against the Italians is the fact that Ethiopia is one of the craggiest, most uneven mountainous countries in the world. Technologically, Ethiopia couldn't hold a candle to Italy. The country was still heavily divided along tribal lines and had very little sense of stability. The only reason the country didn't fall sooner is because of how difficult it was for the Italians to invade, take and hold such difficult terrain.
      Not to take away from Ethiopia's achievements at all, of course. Haile Selassie was a great Emperor and statesman, but the nation itself has always been in a very precarious situation. With dozens of ethnic groups and such hostile environment, modernisation (by late 19th/early 20th century standards) would have been next to impossible on any sort of nation-wide scale without a massive deal of intervention and help from the Western powers (who would be very uninterested in making such an investment into Ethiopia while still letting the country remain independent).

      The real-life un-industrialized Ethiopia was given Italian Eritrea after WW2. Until Eritrea decided they'd rather not be part of Ethiopia and after 30 years of warfare managed to achieve independence, putting Ethiopia back in their current landlocked status. Had Ethiopia been a wealthier, fully industrialized nation and acquired Eritrea earlier, enough of the Eritreans might have decided that being part of the empire was actually a pretty good deal to prevent that from happening. Or this more powerful Ethiopia just crushes the Eritrean revolution.

    Seeing Alantropa reminded me of a occasional pipe dream in Australia over the years … *turning the rivers back inland.*
    The idea is that all the water that flows out to see is instead redirected, either to create a inland sea or just to irrigate everywhere and make most of the land fertile.…?
    _and screw the marshes and the estuary ecosystems._
    It got some airplay back in the late 80's/early 90's cause some talkback radio king spearheaded a campaign to fund it by privatising the national phone network - so he and his cohorts could buy a lot of the shares (then the river plan would be declared unfeasible, but they would've already made their profits).
    So what if it had gone ahead?
    The possible scenarios cover a lot of time periods, since it was first proposed in the 19th century. The dream was to make a *big Australia…* A nation that was the equal to America in _usable_ land and population.
    So how badly would this screw up?
    And what would be the cost and effects in different time periods? Later is easier to construct, but also means more understanding of the consequences.
    Perhaps a 1850's plan, 1900, between war period, post WW2 period, and a early 1990's period.

      I would actually argue that being red is worse. This is because communism rejects all traditions of a society and has the potential to negate belief in moral values. Islamic conquerors on the other hand would replace incompatible traditions with their own and the civilization would still maintain some semblance of its past, barring extreme cases of genocide. With that said; despite aid from the USSR, Ethiopia wasn't truly red but within the influence of a red nation. If the leaders of Ethiopia or the populace had to choose to adopt one of these political/cultural systems; I highly doubt they would have choosen communism, unless under threat of being purged which is unlikely given the nations involved. At most they would suffer oppression and high taxes by Somalia.

    I feel that there was a lost Opportunity on the Ethiopia section of the video. If Ethiopia had industrialised it is very possible that they would have had a destabilizing influence on the rest of the African colonies that surrounded it. The fact that Ethiopia remained independent and defeated the Italians fueled many nationalist movements in Africa right up to the 1960s in our own time line. Imagine that combined with the knowledge of Ethiopia as an industrial power on the continent. That would empower so many nationalist movements and put European empires in Africa under a certain degree of pressure.
    Moreover Ethiopia wouldn't have to necessarily go in to conflict immediately, they would just have to wait for the right opportunity.
    For example if the tensions in Europe that lead to the First World War still happened, that could have been catastrophic for any European power in that timeline since an industralised Ethiopia could take advantage of the over stretched armies of Europe.
    In a scenario like that Ethiopia could either sponsor nationalist/terrorist/freedom fighter movements across Africa and accelerate their path to independence or use the opportunity to annex much of the continent and incorporate them into the Abbysinan Empire.

    • @dolla316
      @dolla316 6 лет назад +33

      Aniwazoa honestly that is the far likely scenario especially after Europe exhausted itself after World War 1 it would have left the rest of Africa ripe for the picking and Ethiopia would have expanded influence across the entire continent that would have changed the global scope and a lot of interesting ways.
      Cody is pretty damn good but he lacks Monumental Insight when it comes to Africa

    • @whoaminow100
      @whoaminow100 6 лет назад +21

      also religion could play a large part since most of Ethiopia was Christian and ancestrally so that could have had an impact and how various European countries viewed and dealt with them. perhaps they would have join the entente in WW1 gaining status from the European powers as a recognized country not just some place to have colonies.

      Lets suppose instead ethopia is able to modernize and industralize. Ethopia in OTL was attacked by Italy. Lets the flip the script. Ethopia in the mid 30s was able to fight italy off or at least give them a bloody stalemate. Now Italy is part of the Axis and Ethopia circa 1941 wants payback so it declares war on Italy and invades and conquers Italian Somaliland. Italy is way too busy to recapture it. So by 1945 Ethopia instead of being a landlocked nation is now a ocean going developing nation with a port city and the will to develop into an export driven economy with markets in india, asia and the middle east.

    • @stephenvoss6092

      Italian Somaliland is the peanut butter for Ethopia's chocolate (pardon the pun). Ethopia had potential for development but lacked access to ports and major markets. Somalia had ports but lacked capital. Ethopia with those Ports becomes much important to the United States which would help Ethopia develop the port in exchange for allowing a naval base.

  • @DEFCONINFINITY

    I'm not sure its fair to say Ethiopia would still lose a defensive war. The Italians suffered a series of incredibly embarrassing defeats even during their second invasion. I don't think it's a stretch to say that a more or less fully modernized Ethiopian military would trash them again.

The church is organized into wards of about 1x1.5 sq miles and then there is usually about 4 wards to a church then about 16 wards to a stake center. In the case of armed conflict three stake centers would organize into one district and are responsible for creating 3 battalions per stake center. My scout master and one of my church leaders was one of the community emergency response leaders and no joke he had enough guns to arm a rifle to every house in his ward as well feed everyone for a month mormon and non Mormon alike and besides his living room kitchen and guest bathroom almost everywhere was stocked with food and ammo even the split breezeway when you enter the home.
