- I bought this 1980 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am with a locked up 301 engine. Prior to the video I got it unlocked and running, but it had no oil pressure. A friend of mine then told me about a 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix 400/TH400 car that he had for sale. I bought it and put the engine in the Trans Am. In this video, I go over what's needed to swap the engine from the goofy and tired 301 to a more common, desirable, and powerful engine such as a 400. All was done on a shoestring budget, with the most expensive part of the equation being the complete Grand Prix for $1,000. Overall I'm really pleased with how the swap turned out. I still have some things to tie up, but the car is extremely responsive and does great donuts!
I find those Harbor Freight screw style engine levelers very nice for pulling engines compared to just a chain. It lets you tilt the trans tail down so the balancer can clear the core support. If you put some lube on the jack screw, you can turn it while the engine is attached.

You can use a wire wheel to clean the gaskets off the valve covers.
Pretty good odds getting the busted bolts out of the exhaust manifold!
Good job it will be nice when your done new oil pump will fix that low oil pressure
Instead of using a razor blade you can barely hold on to aimed at your hand try a knife that has a handle and run the blade down the length holding it flat against cover . Also I have opened my vice up wide and laid the cover upside down to hold it .light pressure of course

Fix that kick down and put some dual exhaust on there and you're going to have a proper trans Am. That thing is very smooth and nice
