  • While I was working in the shop a couple gentlemen showed up with this 1947 Ford Coupe on the trailer. They'd just rescued it from a barn and cleaned it up and were looking to make a buck. So being the sucker I am I bought it off them and had them unload it in the yard. Let's see if we can get it running! This car has been SOLD! As always, thanks for watching!

I started working at my Grandad's Gulf Super Station in 1968. I was 13. Started wiping windows, before Pop would let me pump gas, or God forbid, get under a hood. By my senior year in high school I was the lead mechanic in the shop. My uncle was "allegedly" the head mechanic, but had head issues from the war. I excelled, and made Pop rich and well respected. I worked on 40's 50's 60's cars every every every day. Wasn't anything but automatic tranny overhauls I didn't or couldn't do. Finally got an offer to work at a dealer for 5X's what Pop was paying me. And I only had to work 40 hrs a week. Sorry Pop, but you were a tight ass, and I needed to keep my new wife happy.

    • @JeffKopis

As for your 47 Ford you just got, it reminded me of the 1970 duster I had with axccel dual points ignition. If I remember correctly the second set of points were set to add extra spark/or hotter spark. As for your show I watch it religiously and to be honest I would have to add pudding Fab shop as number two. Love you guys God bless

The real story on the 46-48 Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge Etc, was after W W 2 the factories didn't re-tool, they just started producing 1941 models with a few cosmetic Small changes. The first real "New" models were not out until 1949-50. This looks like a hobbyist restore with a cousin-in-law paint job and a minimum of actual work done about 1990. Nothing wrong with that, they probably made it worth saving today...

many times when servicing flatheads, We drained the oil and replaced it with tri clean. Then set up a heat lamp under the oil pan and after six to eight hours we had a completely de-sludged engine. Drained the tri clean and filtered it, flushed the oil pan with K-10 added new oil and filter. Away it went.

Car looks pretty solid. Had one in High School. Used it as a project in shop class. And Then got another when I lived in Arkansas. Drove it many years. Of course I’m an old man. Pennsylvania oils (Quaker State, Pennzoil, etc) are notorious for sludge. I'm not a chemist so who knows but growing up I was told that Pennsylvania oils were fortified with paraffin. My 69 Firebird left the dealer on Quaker State and stayed that way till I had to do head gaskets. The valve covers had an imprint of the rockers otherwise they were solid full of sludge. This is a car that got 3000 mile oil changes after the break in oil change. Nasty stuff. I converted it to Valvoline which I ran in everything else. More useless sludge data. Pennsylvania oils are bad. FYI the Firebird had 60+k miles when it was opened.

🗿💨 them lazer pointers are my most recent trouble shooting tool. When an intake valve is slow about returning, the intake will heat up. When gas topped 4bucks a gal people about quit changing their oil. From what I've observed, anyway. My brain droppings wouldn't be complete untill I mentioned running strong fuel stabilizer to lube the valve stems and guides. 😎✌️ That old Ford looks Way good. Thanks for sharing Mortske 👍👍

Oh, how I love me the sound of a flathead! I'm surprised you aren't into that body style, matey - she's a gorgeous beast with some lovely lines and a great engine, yet she's simple as underneath to work on. They knew how to make 'em good and with everything being greasable, you can keep 'em going much longer before having to replace it with a chinesium knockoff that wont have a grease circ and will give up in an eighth of the time. A good mix of old tech and new, is what I'm saying. AH well - she looks solid in all the important areas, looks to have a good price and she looks like a great candidate for just getting it roadworthy and driving the wheels off before needing any serious stuff done. All the best

Ford guy - but... I can't believe I'm saying this... I'm about to buy my second-ever Chevrolet. The first, in 1982, was a 64 4-door thing, which got stolen a couple days later because I didn't know about that "Valet" key position? Got it back after they had their joy ride, but then sold it to a gal. She was oh so happy with it. Anywho... I've been on the hunt for an older Datsun or Toyota or Luv or anything minitruck for a while now and they're all $5000 and higher regardless of the condition or rust, uh, I mean "weight reduction." I'm more than capable to build one, but just can't stomach the entry price for junk! On Sunday we casually asked a feller we know who runs estate sales around town about my search and he said, "I have a nice little Chevy for sale. Here's the keys, it's out there, go have a look." OMG. Out there was a 40,000 mile time capsule 1983 S10 (similar to Puddin's, but. Red with white body stripe/thing). Tahoe edition, automagic (wha-wha...), but it is pristine. Paint is faded, but not a scratch on her. Interior looks new except for the sagging headliner, which I guess is a 1980's thing. Tires are from 1983, so those got to go, but the battery was dead, so on Tuesday I will go back to have a look at it closer. Going to the dark side.

I had to laugh when you were talking about the distributors and the compressor kicked on.
Duff lifted his head up and looked in that direction, and he had a look on his face like,
" Hey, I'm tryin to sleep here".
She's a good lookin 15-20 footer. It will make someone a really good driver.
It's too bad it wasn't an easy start and run, but at least it made for a good 2 1/2 hour video 😎
I like the center part of the horn ring with the Ford in script and the old style logo. Very cool...
I don't know why people would get pissed because you called it an amateur restoration.
Personally I think that's stretching it a little. Hell they didn't even bother taking out the window rubber.
A decent amateur would at least work around it if they didn't want to take out the glass.
A quick and easy way is to peel back the rubber and clean and sand the area under the rubber,
and then pull back the rubber and put a small piece of rope under it to keep it off the metal surface.
That way you can still get it painted decently, and you don't have to worry about the paint coming off
around the rubber or trim... As far as striping in the paint, you have to pay attention when you spray metallic paint.
Some people just hose it on like they are spraying primer, ala DDSS LOL.

I don't know if you have a small airport nearby, but if you do....they usually sell 100 octane "low-lead" ethanol free fuel. My buddy is a pilot, and he says that so-called low-lead actually has more lead than the old regular car pump gas used to. Don't run it in anything with a catalytic converter! He also says since it's ethanol-free, it will store for years. I am thinking 2 or 3 years, anyway. I run that 100 octane av-gas in my 67 Chevelle's 355 cube 9.5 to 1 4-bolt engine, and she really likes it! The exhaust smells great, too! Has that race gas odor. And I have yet to foul (or poison, as they call it) an oxygen sensor on my Holley Sniper Stealth system, although I have a few spares I picked up....just in case. Cost? Well, the crappy 91 octane car pump gas here in commiefornia is like 5 buck per gallon, the av-gas is 6.50 per gallon. "Real" race gas? Last time I priced it, it was like 12.50 per gallon for 110 octane leaded. Probably more now. Get to know the guy who runs the maintenance and fueling department at your local small airfield. I have a code for the personnel gate, can't drive my car in, but I walk my 5-gallon jugs in and their fuel point takes my debit card. I just have to lie to the machine and put a fake number for the tail number, and tell it my aircraft is grounded before fueling. Easy-peasey, lemon-squeezy!
