- Ever wanted to sidechain your bass but not the alter the mid and top range?
In this video, I show you 2 ways to achieve this effect.
It's a more advanced method of side chaining which can be much more transparent when used correctly.

I feel so much more educated now :DDD
He said the F and then the F word!!!
#brilliant
I guess im asking randomly but does anyone know a trick to get back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb forgot my account password. I would love any tips you can give me
Peak controller is one of those secret lethal weapons. Is useful for a lot of stuff and this is one of those. Another way to do this is linking the pregain knob of the low band in Maximus.
Sugestion: teach your followers how to do freq panning with EQUO
Good idea!

Hey in the mix i seen this one vid you had and it was about a plug in and i belive it adds something named pop to the vocals can you do a vid?
im sorry that crash at the end Made my day :P
And also only cause it happened to me all of yesterday!! Felt so irritated good to see I'm not the only one it happens to
If it wasn’t for you I’d literally have no knowledge on anything done in FL Studio I praise you and this channel 🙏🏻
9:15 Michael is like "Don't say the F word!... oh no, I just said 'f', now I need to say something, hmm... Flipping Flamingo!" Family Friendly Channel :D
Yep!
I have actually crashed one time using that very same EQ. Although it normally happens when I use soundgoodizer.
Imagine having to deal with that when you are in a demo version of FL. I am so glad I don’t have to deal with it anymore.
Haahha 😂😂🤣but this video helped me a lot
Theres SOOOOO many tutorial on FL Studio online.. but YOURS are the BEST Ive seen.. and trust me.. I've seen TONS!!! Thank you!!! I was looking for a different sidechaining method.. Im going to try this out!!
Another plugin can you use is fabfilter pro-c2 and select frequency from 20-125hz, very fast attack & fast-medium release and treeshold around 18db so it will sidechain only on low frequency.Your kick will never clash again with you sub, if you want sidechain all low frequency you can move until 200hz
Other plugins great to sidechain are : fabfilter pro-mb, waves factory spacers
Nb : main feature you need to know about sidechain is frequency selecting, you can select what frequency you want to sidechain, this really important especially when you want sidechain your drum loops (where inside of patterns are include kick, snare, hihat, ride, percussions) you only want sidechain chain your low right? So frequency selection feature is really important. Try it 🙌🏻 cheers
I'm literally trying to sidechain, watching your older video, then I see this.. You are a lifesaver mate
You can also use this technique if your snare's fundamental frequency isn't quite standing out in the mix. Thank you for uploading this technique, I've been using it for 3 years and I'm glad you're showing it to more people :)
You can also link peak controller to reverb. The reverb will go to zero if a new note is playing and the reverb will automatically go up again after the note has played. Really cool.
Thanks for that pal
You are one of the best teachers ever
That max setting in the automation was a gem 💎
You’re awesome for including that very last part. Welcome to the real world. Excellent tutorial. BTW I’m 70 and just getting interested in all this very confusing stuff but I ain’t quitting.
I don't know what to say bro... Thank you so much for teaching me all these FL Studio tricks. I had no idea this was possible (the 2nd trick). The video is about sidechaining, but, to me, the most valuable thing that I learned is what the FL peak controller does and how you can link parameters to controllers.
Thanks to your videos, i'm becoming less and less scared of all the settings that seem so complicated and that I did not understand.
I love your channel.
I've used that second method for a long while now. I setup a ghost 3osc that plays into a mute channel, activates the peak controller and ducks a mixer channel volume. I then run anything I want sidechained, through that mixer channel that ducks its volume and I play the 3osc wherever I like however long I like through a note clip
thanks for the tutorials !!
Your videos are always top notch Michael. I've actually done this technique recently on the high end frequencies of a reverb applied to a snare. It gave the snare a bit more body without the full reverb coming through.
THIS is what I have been seeking knowledge on how to do. You (both) have taught me so much, but this wins a comment and a much deserved thank you!!!
There's just one of me?
I can already see memes being created with the end😅.. classic FL studio
Thank you Michael for this Sidechaining Tutorial. For a while now, I've only been using Automation to sidechain my Kicks to my bass, but this video has helped me realise there's other methords I could use to get cleaner results.
This was extremely helpful because I used to just outright sidechain the kick and bass and it felt kind of overwhelming. I'll definitely be playing with more of the controllers. Thank you.
well isn't this just perfect i swear i learn something new with each video!!!!!! THANKS AS ALWAYS Michael
I still cant believe these videos are free, thank you for these great lessons Michael!
For more precise way to do it is simply open maximus .. create automations for low, mid & high gain control and you will have more control over the sidechain for any frequency .. I personally do it and it's really great method.
Thank you for explaining specifically where to insert the units. You inspired me to get FL studio and make music again. I also acquired serum yesterday. Music feels exciting again.
I appreciate your contribution and more importantly, the consistency and clarity in your approach. Have a happy Christmas!
You are really young but you have information like a professor, love you
Thanks brother 💙
I'm a begineer, but I'm surprised you did not mention the use of multiband compressors. Is their cases where you would prefer this technique, instead of a multiband compressor, where you can control transients more precisely with the attack and release knobs, instead of relying on the exact peak signal / drawing approximate curves ? Super nice video as usual !
Are sure u are a begineer?

Best channel on RUclips to learn mixing.
Dude.... Mike... I don't know how.... But... Daam...no...
It's happening for the second time... The thing I was browsing Internet for... You just uploaded the video of that tutorial.... My Gosh... It's unbelievable
Thanks
thank you so much for sharing all this knowledge!!
Been waiting for this. Thanks!
Thanks again for yet another wonderful, clear video on such a controversial, rather unclear topic, Michael! 🧡
every tutorial I have watched made it so complicated and you explained it perfectly. thank you!
i’ve been using fl studio for 6 years and i just discovered this. thats amazing!!
I want to learn fl studio.
I find this channel.
I see tons of videos with proper length and good education.
Blast that free time. I got tutorials to watch :'D
I love this channel
That first take clip was beautiful.
How are your tutorials so good, goddamn
I love the way you teach. You help me big time for a beginner like. My music sounded like I tripped and fell with a bunch of instruments.
The crash bit at the end.... Thats why I now use studio one 4.5 haha.
Sounds like on of ur best songs i want to hear it when u finish ittt
That second tip I never heard of until today! I usually use Gross Beat as my sidechain, but using the peak controller method seems way more flexible. Great tutorial!
Just found your channel, and I already love it
I love watching your videos because they’re simultaneously super informative and incredibly peaceful. Lol. Your voice is somehow comforting my dude, no homo. Haha.
Creative as usual
Hitting the expectations day after day
Keep up bro
here Im sitting, 9 years into production, not knowing fruity peak controller. damn man, this channel makes me feel like a beginner.
How timely - I'm working on track that would very much benefit from this. Videos are always spot on. Thanks!
Thank you Michael, I was actually looking for frequency dependent ducking or sidechain, mainly for mis to high frequency content and percussion, so one sound gets out the way of the other to tame the masking and build-up of certain frequencies, as a way of taming the harshness in the upper mids, without removing too much of the presence, and these techniques were just what I was looking for 🙂
Thank you for the great tutorials. You’re amazing.
i knew both ways to sidechain kick with bass. but i didnt knew the max value on the automstion clip. this will really help
what a dope tutorial, I used this to mix a synth bass with a short 808 (zay/spinz (for the trap producers) and it sounds clean 🔥🙌
This beat is badass. I love it!
Finally, another video! 👍😁
You are just crushing this. Thanks a lot!
Flipping Flamingo.......this man is really awesome... these tutorials are extremely helpful. Thank you bro!!
That guitar is amazing
Everybody need to side channel to this channel > In The Mix.
Peak controller is legitttttt.... been years so I forgot but thank you brother.
I used to link it to the volume actually but do like the idea of doing it on the eq low freq.. 👌🏻
that max volume thing is awesome
you’re amazing & i appreciate your videos & approach to coaching
When FL Studio crashed, I felt it in my soul. Big ups, sick video
Hi Michael can you do a Tutorial on Pitcher? You're the only channel who does really good tutorials that are right.
Never even thought about doing this, Love it
Crazy tutorial on bass mixing 😍😍 lovely
Your videos are soooo amazingly helpful!
This video is perfect, because nobody teach this as easy as you do :')
I admire your fluent and simplified way of teaching👌✌💪👼.
I’m so glad RUclips starting telling me about you again... Jeez I missed so much info.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience. Your videos are always really well done. Compliments !
Great tutorial lad! This is mixing/mastering wise a lot better (ofc style is subjective in every case) than using Limiter, since it doesnt entirely cut it but lowers correct frequencies.
Learned something, again. Nice work man.
I use thiss for couple of months... And i love it.. Better that side chain for 808s...
Thank you for the amazing videos you do!!! They are really helpful!!!
Thank you so much the advance is what I don't know I have been needing for years. God bless you Amen
You can also use a peak controller with fl limiter.
Sidechain the kick to the sub channel with the volume set to 0 on the routing knob.
Open Fl Limiter and set to Comp and find the kick signal.
Then just compress the sub track.
I understand the purpose of the video.
It is for subs on all tracks.
This is basically dynamic EQ, the same thing a TDR Nova can do
This technique is not Similar to dynamic EQ at all, I am not using the kick to reduce the kick, I am using the kick channel linked to the bass channel, the EQ is moving dynamically but it is triggered by an external channel. I love TDR Nova though, it's my favourite
@@inthemix You can sidechain the kick channel to TDR Nova on the bass channel, and use Nova Threshold to duck the kick at a selected frequency. The effect is similar to Peak Controller linked to Parametric, except Nova can duck to infinite. The downside with Nova is that it is more CPU heavy. In Nova, you need to select Ext SC and in the FL wrapper settings - Processing, select the sidechain channel as Aux Input.
OHH THE VIDEO I WANTED!!!!
Great video. But what if my drum kick and base are programmed in the step sequencer?
A plugin suggestion for this very purpose: trackspacer
Very helpful, I will try this in my projects. Thank you!
Your Videos are providing so much useful knowledge, this one is no exception. Good Job Michael :)
I eagarly waiting for the nxt video brother...😊
You can sidechain the lows with multiband compressors too and adjust the attack release ... but peak controller trick is great too.
This technique vs Surfer EQ vs sidechained multiband dynamic compressor?
This was soooo needed brooo love your tutorials massive help let me put you on 5% of my royalties I swear 👏🏼👏🏼
flamingo oh oh oh if you're multicolored that's cool too xD
Peak controller is def one of FL's secret weapons, nice one Michael!
What's with all these crashes of FL Studio? It never happened to me, not even once. What am I doing right that no one else does? xD
It's literally never happened to me until this month ...I really don't know what's up!
Seriously?! Dammit! You're lucky! FL STUDIO crashes every fucking time at one point of every session on my laptop!
Same here. My FL first crashed when I loaded up some heavy plugin. Never after that
My FL Studio hasn't ever crashed like that, but once it did because I clicked on some button and then it opened 20 error windows and crashed. Idk why.
@@inthemix Did you use the FLEX plugin on this project? I think the recent crashes have to do with that, and I stopped having them once I stopped using that plugin
Thank you 🇧🇷
Damn that Peak Controller is a beast. Thanks a lot bro.
Peak Controller is bomb, you can do a lot of really crazy stuff with it with some creative routing and a bunch of filters. I use it for dynamic EQ all the time.
Trackspacer
by Wavesfactory ?
Yes that works too, but costs $29 more than this technique
Good idea, but there is a little problem - attack is too slow... You can check bass track by exporting seperate tracks (with "Split mixer tracks" option enabled).
Yes this is why I said to check with your ears! You might want to add a click before the kick and use that to trigger the sidechain :)
@@inthemix I'll try :)
that guitar
Where is the advantage of your approach versus side-chaining only the low band of a multi band compressor?
No real advantage, but in FL studio there is no stock multiband which accepts a sidechain, I believe!
Well there is a advantage: a mutiband compressor (MBC) like Maximus splits the bands, which creates a different waveform, that sounds very similar. The tradeoff: the waveform can have less loudness because of the the way most MBCs split bands (not linear phase splits). You can test this yourself if you run a squarewave throu a MBC and analyze the wave with an oscilloscope and look at the db meter.
The disadvantage with the eq technique is that the targeted frequencies can not be muted entirely with shelf and peak filters.
Great tips, very grateful, in my opinion the second is
easy as the first one and it's not so easly to clipping! Thanks
Thank you bro. you a good teacher
Always a great and detailed explanation....mad and respect 👍👍
Interesting. I would've thought using the peak controller would be the basic method and the manual automation would be the advanced method, since you can meticulously fine-tune the response curve in automation clips (or even choose when they don't appear) whereas your flexibility is rather limited with the peak controller.
Side note: You mentioned negative infinity but the low shelf you selected bottoms out at -18 dB which is the cap for FL Parametric EQ 2. If one needs it to tend towards "negative infinity", one can, with a high pass. Obviously nobody will do that because then they can't automate the band's gain (which is the entire point of your demo), but I'm just noting it here for the sake of accuracy.
Good spot! Maybe a high pass could be used and instead of automating the gain, you automate the frequency dial so that it cuts from 5Hz to 100Hz very quickly?
@@inthemix Never tried it but I suppose it would work. I mean I've automated frequency before, but not at this speed. On the one hand, you'd need to tinker with it for quite a while to figure out how fast the dial needs to swing up to make sure the bass never doubles down on the kick's fundamental, but on the other hand, I think you could make some killer effects if you combine automating the Q of the filter along with the frequency ramp. I wonder if some of the harder genres don't already do that.
What if you automated the Parametric EQ 2's Mix Level instead?
@@Toothy7564 That's going to rotate phases by large amounts, audibly, every time you do it. Normally "phase issues" are a meme but in the case of automating PEQ2 mix level, it would be real, it would sound like parts of the sound are spilling through at random.
Unless you turn on linear phase - which has since become an option -, but then you'll have to account for latency.
@@DelphinidaeZeta That blows. I guess the real solution is to, if possible, stack two or perhaps three identical parametric EQs on top of each other with the sidechain, which would make it -54 DB, nearly impossible to hear at all.
Fruity Peak is awesome, I use it everytime mostly for sidechaining and to use Fruity Parametric EQ 2 as a dynamic equalizer
U can do this simply in plugin called track spacer
7:15
How did you change the kick pattern without touching the mouse :D
Mind control! It might have been something I shifted in the edit to make the video flow better/faster, I can't quite remember as I edited it a few weeks ago :)
wait there is mind control in FL studio?
