Knowing how sounds translate on a speaker, and how to make them sound as we want on them is really important in this genres...finally there's someone sharing this valuable info. Thank you ♥
It's easy to overdo it sometimes, but after a while it gets a lot better. My speaker port was broken for a long time so I made music on some terrible speakers, I went back to check everything I made on that, and the kick adsr was by far the biggest overal issue. It made me realize something, though... It can be worth it to keep more decay/sustain/release on other frequencies, depending on the kind of kick and track. In most house kicks etc. it's mostly just the lows that last long anyway, but for hiphop, for example, it can be a way to keep some of the character of those kicks even in tracks where they shouldn't dominate the low end. Of course, it's also common to layer sounds with multiple sources, a real kick drum's ~300hz + with some nice sustain over a tight bassy kick is great for mixing in an organic sound, for example. Noise can also be great, as usual!
Thanks for sharing here. I agree to kick adsr. I‘m using good headphones + sound Id reference plugin to finally hear the details, which was impossible before in my untreated room and monitors.

Thanks for the video. In your mix you already go for maximum loudness, not necessarily in your mastering process, so a reference track should be played at is full volume.

I was wondering how to display two SPAN at the same time. To do this, go to the preferences and set the following "multiple plugin windows" AN. Hide plugin window OFF. And open plugin window ON. Then it works.
Usually I just take bass sounds and kick sounds and cut between 150 to 200hz out of them and cut a little bit of the high mids from other sounds like strings (the high pitched aliasing just makes it sound worse) so my vocals can come through without interference
My pleasure, Jesse! Your skills have improved dramatically since we met several years ago! Great work on this release and I hope to see more of them this year! 🙌🏻
@@EDMTips Thank you so much Will! I really appreciate that! I have a lot more releases coming this year! :) I’m a lot more technical with stuff especially in mixing, so this video is a great example of that! I use span a lot on mid/side and always watching my phase and low end!
nice video ! how do you sustain that balance through out your own mastering process ? if you put a compressor on the master, the volume relation of kick and bass is going to change right ?
Compressor on master bus should always generally not working too hard and not effect an already reasonably balanced track too much. And if you've balanced it well, then high passing the compressor to leave the bass alone is worth doing too.
Whoa! I have been struggling with low end mixing for the last year and wasted hours of mixing mistake upon mixing mistake. But I just tried this method for the first time and it's absolute gold. I barely did any mixing and my mix sounds infinitely better (driving energy). Thanks again Will!
It's common advice to hear "use a reference track," but not so common to learn exactly HOW to work with one, and using free/standard stuff no less. Thank you!
I just became aware of your channel and what a gem!🙂 The best teacher I have found on RUclips for learning how to produce electronic dance music. Very thorough and clear. I will continue to watch, learn, and support. Thank you 💯
Hey, what computer are you using? The link in the description only leads to the apple amazon page, but doesn't show any details, what model you use. So I'd be thankful for those information. Have a nice day and keep up the great work.
did you know that you are able to see both, the signal coming through the master and the reference track, inside of one instance of span? You just need to set the reference track as sidechain input for span on the master. I don't know about other DAWs but in ableton it's not possible to do that with the vst3 version but you can set a sidechain input with vst2.4. So inside span you gotta click the little arrow pointing down just right next to "Routing" and select "2.1 Stereo" and then activate the underlay function. And boom you can see both signals underlayed!
Fantastic video. I've already started using this :) I've got a couple of question - I wondered if you could explain why the reference is gained down to -18Lufs & the kick of the work in progress is set to peak at -12db? I realise the ref would be at a mastered level, so louder than the other track, but is there a reason why these particular levels are chosen? Also, what type of metering is used in Span? The kick is peaking at -12db on the master, but hitting at -36 in Span? I wondered what the difference in this metering is? If anyone can help with those questions, that would be awesome :)
Hey this tutorial was veryyy helpful! I've got one little question. How you open the two span's at the same time? If I open one the other one vanished...
How to practically find a good reference track, in the same key, similar vibe, etc? Do I need to play dozens or hundreds of tracks to find something similar? Any tip on streamlining that process?
Please let me know. Should I put a limiter plugin on the output channel strip to increase the volume of the mix. I don't want to think that at the time of mastering the whole mix is out of control in regards of gain. Thank you.
Nice one! Reference track is also from my favourite artist 🤙 Would love to see how to make this Meduza’s new ish type tracks (Melodic techno?) or how to create that deep awesome atmosphere/energy that they do so well = what are the ”secret” ingredients. Thanks Will!
is there a spectrum analyzer that exists out there that lets you interactively modify the frequencies without having to backtrack through plugins to make alterations? I guess FabFilter kind of lets you do this , I wish Insight would let you do it with the 3d window
Great video - thank you! I love your videos and they've made me a better producer! Random question -- how did you get both instances of SPAN to open at the same time on different tracks? I can only show plugins in Ableton from the active track.
Will , hello again and love your videos. Previous said you have inspired me to spend more time with Ableton 11 doing deep house and techno music. I ve purchases splice monthly, and serum based off of your videos and love them. Trying to be like Will :) lol. I have s few questions about this video and then a general question to about your classes Question1 - will this work for more than just deep house and dance music. For example i recorded Blackbird by the beatles with vocalist and was wondering if this method could also be done there. The track only has a kick drum, acoustic guitar track and single female vocal track. Question2 - after mixing the kick and bass can this method also be used for the mid frequencies and High frequencies. i would believe that would cover the mids of the guitar and vocals, and then the highs of the guitar and vocals. Question3 - if the kick drum is not showing the same as the reference track on SPAN what should be done to make them closer? Will using EQ 8 on the kick track be the main method to get that Spectrum shape to match up with the reference General Question- You share a lot of tips and trick on your youtube channel on how to improve recording and mixing skills. What does your accelerator program offer to make it better than the videos on your channel. I'm assuming interactive feedback on assignments and such. just wondering. I still feel like stuff i put together on my DAW is not as good as it could be. And it seems that now days music is made from start to finish in Ableton, or other DAWs and there is not much else. It seems the old days you would record something. Then that would go to a mixer. Then those songs would to to a mastering pro. Now it seems like it can all be done with a few plugins, a DAW and trained ears.. Well let me know about my questions if possible. I am considering this class. I'm 46, have a pretty decent studio with Ableton 11 and now I'm single and trying to get back to my first love, music . im ready to pour my time and effort into this hobby and try to make something of it. don't want to keep dragging my feet until all my equipment is outdated...again...im i will be older too. lol. I love the idea about learning to create EDM and getting recognized and signed. Of course getting signed takes much much more than just knowing how to record and mix but just like anything it takes that special bit of song writing, meaningful lyrics, memorable hook and chorus and just overall creative catchy sounds that make the song stand out.
Will, i just bought "The Ultimate EDM Mixing Course" and added the "The EDM Tips Creative Toolkit" too. I'll do this for 5 or 6 months and then apply for your accelerator program. Your youtube teaching is great so kooking forward to this.
Welcome aboard man! When you go through the course I'm sure you'll find all the answers to your questions! Otherwise, just drop them in the community group on FB! Or ask underneath the videos in the course! Looking forward to see you there! :) Once you are ready to commit to the Accelerator program reach out to me and let's discuss it via email! Thank you first because this is game changing education. Im only 6 weeks in but, Let say I wanted to use something from another genre and bring intoy your genre ? Does that make sense or not sure or stupid ? Regards to reference track. Thank you so much.
How do you find a reference track that matches to what your doing? I know, R&B, EDM, Hip Hop etc., but a specific song is what I can't find to match the song I'm working on, etc...Thanks for the helpful videos, I mean that in a real way...
Great Information as always ! Thank you! Do you use any form of headphone correction like sonarworks with the hd650s? I recently bought them and I am still adjusting to the lack of subs on them coming from ATHm50x which are closed back and have much deeper bass. I would appreciate your insight on this. Look forward to hearing them, Jesse! 🙂🙌🏻
nice video ! how do you sustain that balance through out your own mastering process ? if you put a compressor on the master, the volume relation of kick and bass is going to change right ?
Compressor on master bus should always generally not working too hard and not effect an already reasonably balanced track too much. And if you've balanced it well, then high passing the compressor to leave the bass alone is worth doing too.
this guy is the best! love your work keep up the great videos
Whoa! I have been struggling with low end mixing for the last year and wasted hours of mixing mistake upon mixing mistake. But I just tried this method for the first time and it's absolute gold. I barely did any mixing and my mix sounds infinitely better (driving energy). Thanks again Will!
Hey Will. Would loooove a tutorial in the style of enhance progressive. Leo Lauretti, Adrian Alexander, Hausman. The bass I can’t get:0
Great suggestions, Mike, I will add this to my list and let's see how many people will vote for it!
This is really helpful, thanks.
Awesome, I am really glad you liked it! 🙂🙌🏻

Better and better your videos , thanks a lot :)
Cheers, Fabrice, I am glad you liked it!
Thank you for watching and continuously supporting EDM Tips and the channel! :)
It's common advice to hear "use a reference track," but not so common to learn exactly HOW to work with one, and using free/standard stuff no less. Thank you!
You’re welcome! :)
Just found your channel , thank you very much!
You're welcome, hope you'll find my videos helpful 🙂🙌🏻
woooow, quick and so powerfull, thank you
You're welcome, glad you like it! 🙂🙌🏻
I just became aware of your channel and what a gem!🙂 The best teacher I have found on RUclips for learning how to produce electronic dance music. Very thorough and clear. I will continue to watch, learn, and support. Thank you 💯
You're welcome, glad you found my videos helpful so far!
Welcome aboard and thank you for supporting the channel! 🙌🏻
👆This is the way! Much cleaner to have both spectrums overlayed in one instance of SPAN, in my opinion.
@@xseb1 glad I could help :)
@@Sindicate_DnB Thanks, I knew that trick already ;) just wanted to support your comment so others might see it as well✌
Fantastic video.
I actually just watched "14 mixing tips" where you explained both these things :)
I love it that you checked another video too! Glad they were helpful and thanks for watching and supporting the channel 🙂
Good tips! Cheers!
You're welcome, glad it was helpful! 🙌🏻
Hey
this tutorial was veryyy helpful! I've got one little question. How you open the two span's at the same time? If I open one the other one vanished...
Great question! I am having a new short on how to do it shortly, so keep your eyes peeled for that one 🙂
If you use SPANs on two different channels, you can do overlay of one over the second in one window of them
Good tip!
What did you do exactly with the LFO tool? Use it in gate mode?
Span has done wonders for my listening
Agreed, it's an incredible tool! 💪
Thanks Will. this is great.
You’re welcome, glad you enjoyed it! 🙂🙌🏻
Now that’s an EDM tip. Great tutorial, thank you!
Thank you.
really great content well explained on this channel
Thank you so much, I am really glad you found my videos helpful 🙂🙌🏻
Nice one! Reference track is also from my favourite artist 🤙 Would love to see how to make this Meduza’s new ish type tracks (Melodic techno?) or how to create that deep awesome atmosphere/energy that they do so well = what are the ”secret” ingredients. Thanks Will!
Great suggestion! I will ad this to my list and let's see how many people will vote for it! :)
@@EDMTips By the way, do you mix like this while you are producing or after you have produced/arranged your track?
Great question! I do at least basic arrangement first :)
is there a spectrum analyzer that exists out there that lets you interactively modify the frequencies without having to backtrack through plugins to make alterations? I guess FabFilter kind of lets you do this , I wish Insight would let you do it with the 3d window
Will, could you please take a look at Baby Audio's smooth operator?!
Great suggestion! I don't use it this plugin much but let's see how many people are interested in a video about it!
Another cracking vid Will - thank you man ❤❤❤
Thank you so much, I am glad you enjoyed it! 🙂🙌🏻
Great video!thanks!
You're welcome, glad you liked it! 🙂🙌🏻
@@EDMTips very helpful. I have a hard time finding good sounding kicks in reason and I have been working with it for 20 years LOL
Have you checked my video on a perfect kick yet? Maybe you'll find it helpful: ruclips.net/video/I_4d4U3Ti9k/видео.html
Will,Thank you again .
You're welcome, Enrico, I glad you liked it! 🙂🙌🏻
I have s few questions about this video and then a general question to about your classes
Question1 - will this work for more than just deep house and dance music.
Will using EQ 8 on the kick track be the main method to get that Spectrum shape to match up with the reference
General Question- You share a lot of tips and trick on your youtube channel on how to improve recording and mixing skills.
Once you are ready to commit to the Accelerator program reach out to me and let's discuss it via email! Cheers man and thank you for your support!
Edm tips what’s the name of your reference sounds awesome another great tutorial btw
Thank you for your work! 💪
You're welcome, glad you found it helpful! 🙂🙌🏻
Thank you first because this is game changing education. Im only 6 weeks in but, Let say I wanted to use something from another genre and bring intoy your genre ? Does that make sense or not sure or stupid ? Regards to reference track. Thank you so much.
I'd stick to one genre once you're learning the ropes :)
Would linear phase eq be more ideal when splitting your bass into different bands? Great vid
How do you find a reference track that matches to what your doing? I know, R&B, EDM, Hip Hop etc., but a specific song is what I can't find to match the song I'm working on, etc...Thanks for the helpful videos, I mean that in a real way...
Thanks Will 👏👏👏
You’re welcome, glad you found it helpful! 🙂🙌🏻
Eli & Fur are amazing!
Have to agree with you, Kyle! 🙌🏻
All this for free. Thank You!!
You're welcome, glad it was helpful 🙂🙌🏻
Great Information as always ! Thank you! Do you use any form of headphone correction like sonarworks with the hd650s? I recently bought them and I am still adjusting to the lack of subs on them coming from ATHm50x which are closed back and have much deeper bass. I would appreciate your insight on this. Correction or getting used to how they sound
