That is criminally underrated drumming right there folks.
Thank you! I appreciate that!
@@chadgraceyLIVE
The fact that you got this down verbatim not only shows how great a drummer you are, but also shows how great the drummer was in the actual band called LIVE. I would bet that you could also play Neil Peart of RUSH as well as John Bonham of LED ZEPPELIN.
@@user-ey9vq3qt1xdude. This IS the drummer from Live, lol..
@@user-ey9vq3qt1x Chad Gracey is the drummer from Live, my man.

This song is one of the best displays of drumming ever.
Wow! Thank you so much! I’m releasing more vids over the coming weeks. Spread the word and keep an eye out!
I vividly remember the first time I watched you play this on Unplugged and it absolutely blew my mind. I still can’t wrap my brain around the complexity of this piece. I’ve always loved this song - probably by favorite song by Live. Serious greatness here.
My favourite Live song. Chad’s performance Unplugged was epic.
it was their unplugged gig ( and this song in that set) that got me into them, well…. I should say took from a casual listener to a full blown fan.
Same here. Like I just posted - the "Unplugged" show (and especially this song) blew my balls off BACK THEN - and it was damn near 30 years ago!!! 🤯🤯🤯
The landscape of this drummer is incredible. I know the guys have re-split but without him it's like putting lemon-aid in the gas tank.
I appreciate that Dan!
I remember hearing this in college and was just amazed by the drums. Then seeing it performed live even just more amazing.
I really appreciate that! Its one of my favs!
One of the best songs off of Throwing Copper!
It amazes how you aren’t considered among the greats.. You attention to detail, creativity, and rhythm have always amazed me! Please give us “Stage” next! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
That's because his tip is in the stratosphere.
THIS is why I love the internet. To see one of my favorite drummers playing some of my favorite songs in a complete playthrough. Amazing.
Glad you found me here. 😁 Thanks for watching!
This is amazing drumming right here!!! One of the greats o all time!!!
Thank you so much!
I just want you to know what your work has meant to me. Throwing Copper changed me and my life forever.
Thats awesome. I really appreciate that!!
Man. I can’t state enough how you influenced my drumming back in the day. I drove my wife and kids crazy playing this in my drum room upstairs. I’ll stop gushing and act my age! Thank you!
I really appreciate this...Cool to know someone out there is inspired by my drumming the way I am inspired by Larry Mullen Jr.
@@chadgraceyLIVE it’s true man! Much appreciated 🥁🫡
Lol, my husband still drives me insane. Tap, tap, tap, tap...on everything, everywhere. 😂
"I warned you! I prepared you! I instructed you!" I listened to that preacher so many nights at 2 am when i worked overnights back then. Shocked to hear him pop up on a song by my fav band. You guys were the best
Wait.....you actually know who that is? We had no idea. I believe Ed found that on a ham radio and recorded it and then we put it in White D. But you know that preacher?
@@chadgraceyLIVE He called himself Brother Stair. The Overcomer Ministry. Fire and brimstone Rev that ran a cult in Walterboro South Carolina. Broadcast on shortwave then started leasing late-night airtime on bigger stations in the 90s. Google him. Not the best guy but his show kept me awake at work back then
Complete badassery drumming right there! Who would've thought back in the early 90's we'd be able to see Chad this up close and personal playing his tracks! LOVE IT!
Thanks for watching Johnny!! This is exactly why I made the channel to people that are interested can watch me up close play the songs.
Wow, there's some mad chops right there. Awesome job Chad!
Thank you!!
Absolutely one of my favorite songs of all time! THANKS for the incredible drums!

Plenty of great drum performances out there, but Chad's performance on this song on Unplugged was just epic. All time fave. I'm pretty sure Live closed every concert I ever saw with this one, and it never disappoints. If you're listening, Chad, thank you and the guys for some great times!
Live and Pearl Jam on Unplugged are the finest examples of musical drumming hands down. Nothing else matters, no disrespect to anyone else!
Fav song on Throwing Copper... what a gem Mr. Gracey!
Wow Dude! This just blew me away!
Thank you! Im glad you liked it.
Had to watch this again. The drumming of this song to me is very very good, you nailed it Chad. super good.
Thank you! I try to stay as close to what I did on the original recording. Thanks for watching, liking and commenting.
Freaking absolutely one of the best songs ever!!! Keep rocking Chad! 🤘🏼 much love!
I ABSOLUTELY agree with @VisciousPhishes - this is simply an incredible display of timing, artistry and PASSION. Still one of my all-time favorites by you guys. The "Unplugged" version STILL blows my balls off.

I spent FOOOOREVER learning this. Your high hat work is amazing, thank you. The MTV unplugged performance still lives in my mind as inspiration.
Thank you Keith!!
I always imagined you playing double left hand hits on the snare on that groove. So great so see it up close. Thanks for the video.

Always loved the drums on this track especially during the bridge. Great groove!🤘

Tied for my favorite song to see live by +LIVE+, it is because of CAG's energy when the song goes nuts. Bravo
My favorite song off that album😊 Love your drumming!
Thank you Dennis!
This whoe album! the drums especially was such an important part of my life! thank you Chad! love from Cyprus
Oh no way! Never been there. Thank you for listening!
I grew up listening to live. One of my first concerts was at Jones Beach in 95 when you were touring with PJ Harvey and Veruca Salt. It’s only now that I realize how heavily my playing was influenced by your drumming! Great to see you on here!
Well thank you.....You are talking to him 😁 and Im really happy to hear this!! Thanks for listening my friend!
Unreal. Best drum performance I’ve ever seen Live!

Saw you guys recently in Adelaide, it was a dream come true. Even better when White discussion was played, your drumming in this song is mind blowing. Love it man ✌🏼
Hey there. I was not on tour with LIVE when you saw them recently. Long dumb story but the guy playing with them now is not me. I appreciate you checking out my channel! Thank you.
Oh really? Sorry my bad man, we where quite far from the stage so I couldn’t quite tell. Will you be rejoining at some stage? Anyways great job on the channel, hopefully you could do “dam at otter creek” sometime! ✌🏼

That is fucking incredible.
Well thank you! I appreciate it. Thanks for watching.
The quiet, the loud, the in-between...so GREAT. I love the dynamics: the builds and strong release when those chorus torrents are unleashed are pure molten.
I'm not a drummer yet. The Live albums, especially "Throwing Copper", would be in my aspired repertoire from day one.
Thank you for the music then and now. And thank you for this channel!!!!

This is how this song is supposed to be played!!!! More covers please
Thank you so much Jason!! covers? 😁 It would be a cover if I didnt actually play on the original recording. 😂
I just realized who you are. My bad and your a legend. I was preoccupied when I was listening to it. I have spent days listening to Live’s music and again your a legend.
@@jasontubbs2192 it’s all good Jason. I appreciate the love!!
Best video yet. I love how you played it like you would at a show. Brings me back to the pits in the mid 90s when you’d close with this and everyone would go insane.
My first concert ever was Live, circa late 1995. I was 12, already a huge fan. Throwing Copper was my first CD.
This was their final song and I can still vividly remember how freakin’ insane the crowd got; there’s so much kinetic energy to this song. I also remember having a hard time being able to see, and then the guy next to my mom and I just picked me up and held me at his level. Much respect to him.
Definitely a Top 5 memory for me.
I love this song!
Just insanely sweet.. well done mate

Damn, Chad, you still got it. Watching you play this on Unplugged has always stuck with me. Killer drumming, man. Thanks for the music.
Thank you so much. It's like a bike....😁
@chadgracey9914 it took a few days to register that you actually responded. Chad, you're probably the most underrated drummer ever. The Distance to Here album was so fn good. Please play Where Fishes Go. Thanks, man.
@@JorshWarshington1 All good! Thank you for this. I really appreciate it. TDTH is def a great piece or art from LIVE. I will put Where Fishes Go on the list! I have move vids ready to be released soon!! Keep an eye out!

Thank you so much!! I really appreciate that!!
Beautifully written piece sir.
Thank you kindly!
Thank you so much for doing these ❤
You're so welcome!
Something I like about your drumming is every hit seems to have been consciously thought, like every shot is accounted. I mean, it rarely seems like a beat placed to support other musicians or a drum roll just to change a beat. It does seem to support, but your drumming is a real part of the melody. Good job!
I remember also the closing of the first I saw of Live with that song. Kept running in my head all night and was constantly talking about it with my girlfriend at that time. Souvenir precieux!
I did put considerable thought into my fills and accents. I appreciate you noticing!
Damn! 😳
I had no idea how fit a person must be to perform this song!
Ha. My fitness was/is pretty good. 😁😁
You are amazing,, i love this drum par t. ❤
Thank you. One of my favs to play “live”!
DAMN!!!...wizard!!! Neil Peart much!!!!!!! You are a fucking amazing drummer. You had me at y'all's mtv unplugged. Passion you definitely have.
Well I don't know about Neil Peart....but thank you very much!! I was super passionate about the music and what we doing on those records!!
Glad I found this, Gracey is a helluva drummer, and this is definitely not one you want to do if your outta shape and haven't hit the kit in a while, this takes some stamina.
Thank you! I appreciate that. This is me replying. haha
Wow! I’m excited that you have your own channel! Always a huge fan of your playing.
White Discussion from the MTV unplugged brought me here.
Love that show from 1995. Those 13” Quick beat hats sounded amazing.
Looking forward to seeing new videos posted and watching your Channel grow. New subscriber!
Awesome! Thank you!
I love that you were never afraid to just play the crap out of those cymbals!
One of my favorites! Timeless masterpiece. I hope you will venture into the V album.
I will get there eventually. 😁 Thanks for listening!
Thank you so much for doing this video and for the channel in general. I have been looking for over a decade to find a good video of exactly how you play this song. There have been a lot of good “sounding” drum covers over the years but I haven’t come across someone who plays it the way you do and that has what I’ve always been interested in! What you play and how you play the chorus, well really all the parts aside from the verses is just epic. It is so impressive to see you coordinate all the notes the way you play it. It looks exhausting 😊 and it is an amazing visual display of your talent. Keep the videos coming and again thanks for fulfilling a wish of mine for many years! I know it is a good amount of work to take the videos and do all of the editing, etc. so your effort is greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much. You are exactly that kind of person I did this for. Im gonna bust out some more vids soon!
@@chadgraceyLIVE Awesome! Looking forward to it! I was wondering, if it would at all be possible, to post the top down angle for this full song if you still happen to have the full clip floating around? I only ask because you are so fast that the side and front angles make it a little tricky to see some parts and exactly what you are playing. I know it is a big ask so of course please feel free to totally ignore me! Again I really appreciate all the time and effort to make these videos, it will really help allow people to play your songs exactly how you intended them to be played!
Get it!!😮
Thank you!!
Such imagination in his playing.
I have no idea what happened to this band but I hope they took care of him when he left.
In terms of writing and playing beautiful, meaningful songs, these four are like the beatles for us 90s kids... 😊
Hey thank you so much. You are talking to CAG. I do all the comments and post all the vids. 😁The band is currently touring but only the singer Ed and 3 other dudes. Long dumb story as to why….
I have listened to this song a thousand times and been to thirty concerts. Absolutely crushed it at Woodstock 94.
Thank you sir. Shit I was 23 a full of piss and vinegar!! Plus it was the largest crowd we had even seen let alone played in front of!
Alove LIVE ❤️
In order to play his songs, you cannot be lazy. You need to lock in like him in monster mode, full body involvement. Not just wrist technique. Beef to have full arm and shoulder hits.
Fucking outstanding. Lose that rhythm once and you never catch up.
Freaking beast man 💪 Easily one of the best songs you've ever done!!
amazing!
Thanks!
One of my favourite songs of all time ...man I love it ❤

Thank you so much Chad for posting all of these awesome videos. I’m an aspiring drummer and I love Live music, so these videos are super helpful to attempt to break the drum parts down.
I’m curious- what else do you enjoy playing along to when you want to tune out the world and have some fun on the drums?
I caught 2 drumsticks from 2 different shows in Denver, CO from Chad Gracey. I still have them on display in my game room. Excellent drummer. This song is a classic...mostly because of the drums. Well done!
Im happy you caught some of my sticks and enjoy my drumming!! Thank you so much!
Locked and loaded to the max! You rarely see drummers incorporate the entire kit like Chad does. Cheers from York PA.
Thank you Mike!
From memory this song would sometimes be the last song played in concert or before encore - understandable, don't know how Chad could immediately drum to another song straight after that! One of my favourite live songs of all time.
We tend to end just about every show with White D.
I was 13 when I saw Live in 1995 at the Polaris Amphitheater in Dayton, Ohio. First concert ever. One of my fondest memories of that concert was when a man standing close to my mom and I could tell I was having trouble seeing the stage (short kid, hadn’t hit puberty yet). He raised me up and put me on his shoulders for a few songs.
White, Discussion was their encore performance, and it was incredible. I started drum lessons shortly after, and it’s specifically because of Chad Gracey.
Sounds great! Can you do "Run to the Water" sometime?
I will get to Run to Water. I have Dolphin's Cry recorded and will release shortly.
Yeah, would love to hear some Distance songs
get some!!
Hell yeah!
Awesome! One of the best songs of the album. And a lot of that is due to the drums. How do you feel after that?
One last thing my man...
Pay attention kids. This is one of the few recorded times where a man and his kit become one.
Want proof?
Over half of this song Chad is WAILING on his kit...
... with his eyes CLOSED.
😳🤯👊🏻💯👏🏻
I do this quite often. That drum set is molded to me. 😁😁😁
Chad your a PA legend, I am from NEPA(scranton area), cheers, PA supremacy!
Thank you sir!! I appreciate it!
@@chadgraceyLIVE yeah brother! I have been a listener since 1994, LIVE was my first favorite band, was great to hear you do some of these interviews.
Not to keep gushing over your mad skills, but I really like the way you anticipate the changes into verse, chorus, etc. the dynamics really signals to the listener hey, if you think that was cool, get ready for this. Producer mentality, all the way.
Thank you! I can see you appreciate the subtlety I like to go for.
He’s very tasteful
Well thank you for saying that! I appreciate it.
This has to be Chad’s favourite song to play.

PQP MUITO FODAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
technical question....I think that from TDTH or V era, like in the video from the BOP DVD, you started to omit the second snare hit at the beginning of the going crazy riff. Was it intentional because it was technically difficult to place it all the time? Was it a choice because you think it sounded better this way? By the way it's very nice from you to offer this. Great work.
Funny you mention this....That was just a consequence of playing the song so many times and it just evolved. Dont lknow how it happened. haha I appreciate your attention to detail. Thanks for watching!!
Chad, do you just remember all the drum parts and play them from memory. Or, do you actually write out the parts and have a music sheet for it? Amazing stuff!
I have a concept of drum music but I can’t read it. So no I don’t write it out. It’s all completely from memory. Great question!!
I forgot to ask in my comment - something I've always wondered about you... I assume that's a floor tom to the left of your snare - quite unusual. Can you tell us how you came to put it there and why?
I adopted that from Larry Mullen Jr. I dont use it much but it gives some cool fills when I do. Plus I use it extensively on songs like Hold Me Up.
@Junkdrummertv how about this 90s killer????
Thank you!!
The drumming isn't exactly what stands out about this song.
Hmmm well since I am the drummer on this song I made videos playing the drums to the song. I am far from implying that the drums "stand out". I am simply recreating what I did with a visual for people that are interested in watching....You know the old saying "if you dont have something nice to say, then dont say anything at all"......I fear this sentiment is lost in the world of the internet today. Thanks for stopping by.
What is supposed to stand out then? Drummers are not supposed to typically "stand out" in a song. That is not their job as a drummer. They are the backbone, not the face. Provide the glue and binding agent to the song, which Chad does here.
@@CrowT Exactly!
