The message of this song to me is, as long as you are alive, you will always be running against the wind. It's just the way life is. When you are young, you think the challenges you are dealing with at that point in your life won't exist when you get older. But that most definitely is not the case. The lyric "Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" confirms he got older but challenges that are completely different than the challenges he dealt with when younger still exist. Going forward, I recommend "Roll Me Away" from Bob Seger. He sings his heart out on that one!

He plays piano in Turn the Page and this one. Seger is one of the best storytellers in his music. He is in the Music Writers Hall of Fame. Amazing because he is from near Detroit. He’s from the Midwest and adds a country bluesy feeling. A true icon.

This was on the radio when I was in high school and then of course I bought the album. It's hard to describe how much this meant to somebody to who was just sixteen or Seventeen years old. And then now to look at it and realize how much more depth there is in this song. But I guess my point is is that even when I was clueless and young being a teenager, this really got to me.

Bob Seger released 2 brilliant live albums, the more rocking Live Bullet in 1977 and the eclectic commercial Nine Tonight in 1981. Before the launch of MTV in 1981, there were rarely only promotional films, this video was certainly made later.
Even as a Central European, I'll be happy if you continue with Bob. You get a WOW-WOW with Bob live!!!

I think the song is mostly about life, reminiscing, regrets and the way life is filled with challenge ('the wind'). He did a lot of songs about the wisdom of looking back to see how we get where we are. 'Like a Rock' & 'Main Street' both follow this type of theme. The older we get, the more we can relate. Listen again in 15-20 years and recall these words. BTW, the more I've thought about genres and categories, the more I felt that there are 3 types... those I like, those I don't and those that I just don't get how anyone can like it... or not like it. 🤔😏

    Three more Bob Seger recommendations:
    -"We've Got Tonight"
    -"Feel Like A Number"
    -"Fire Lake"
"Social or communal purpose beyond just entertainment".
It means it tends to be anthemic. And Bob Seger does produce a LOT of anthems.

I remember feeling like I could do anything when I was 17 and 18(unstoppable ,indestructible) and my friends would always be the same for as long as I lived .It wasn't until I had to live life and experience life that I realized (even with my parents setting good examples)you can easily loose your way, loose you dreams ,loose your goals along the way and not see that you have.Nothing is more deceiving than a fair sky and the wind at your back to make you believe you can rule the world. That you have all the time in the world to get there.

if you're looking for some bangers from Bob:
    Hollywood Nights
    Strut
    Fire Down Below
Shakedown (popularized by the movie Beverly Hills Cop 2 with Eddie Murphy)
    Rock and Roll Never Forgets
    Katmando
Old Time Rock and Roll (re-popularized by Tom Cruise dancing in his underwear in movie Risky Business, and re-popularized by Kobe Bryant re-enacting that same scene for a commercial for Guitar Hero back in 2009 ish).
    for some great soulful songs:
    Shame On the Moon
    Like a Rock
    For some other great ballads:
    Mainstreet
    Still the Same
    You'll Accompany Me
Either way - Heartland Rock sub category is a perfect description - like it's description its communal not just entertainment - like church music - it brings us together and helps us celebrate life as a whole group cuz it shares so many universal truths.

Like so many of his songs, I'd categorize this song as passing along life lessons along with establishing an atmosphere of nostalgia.
I've always interpreted the line "Wish I didn't know now, what I didn't know then." as a wishing for a return to innocence about his relationship, after she said that they never would end. I think she left him in a painful manner, making the breaking of the promise even more powerful.

    • @jraben1065
      @jraben1065 Год назад +3

Yes, I agree that the "wishing" line was reacting to "how we swore it never would end". I think he's wishing he could still believe in something lasting forever. And could make promises so honestly and freely. It almost doesn't matter to me if she left him, or he left her. A lot of the times looking back, you think about what you could have done differently, the part you played in what went wrong. Although some of us have been badly hurt by someone else, usually our worst pain was caused by ourselves.

Talks about the challenges of growing really and the different things we face. “Moving 8 miles a minute for months at a time, breaking all of the rules that we bent” that 8 miles a minute line refers to touring, travelling across the country in a tour bus getting into shit rock star style. The verses at least to me kinda go along as he ages starting with real young, to his younger playing days etc

The line "wish I didn't know now, what I didn't know then" seems to be reacting to "how we swore it never would end". I think he misses the girl, but it's more about wishing he still believed in something lasting forever. A time when he felt honestly and freely, and had hope. Bob's songs usually look back at loss. Perhaps to think about what we could have done differently, the part we played in what went wrong. Glenn Frey (pronounced “FRY”) was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. So is Bob Seger. Frey just happened to be in town when Seger and The Silver Bullet Band were in the recording studio, so he stopped by for a visit. Bob Seger liked his singing in The Eagles, and asked him do backing vocals on this song, which he kindly accepted the offer to do so.

I would call it more Southern Rock. He’s talking about a young relationship in the song, and he’s reflecting on his life as it went forward from there “8 miles a minute” as he says. Then as he got older he was remembering the good times comparing them to his current life, busy life.

This reminds me of Lindsay. I knew and gave myself to her, and she to me. I was 15. Summer ended, my family moved. 6 years later, she'd moved with her mom somewhere near me, and i saw her coming home from school. Stu?, she asked. I was supposed to call her MINE, so she'd know i remembered. While we were separated, I'd suffered a head injury in a crash, and had forgotten about the word MINE and what it meant. So, she ran off cos I'd forgotten, didn't give me the time to figure things out. I never saw her again. I'm sorry, Lindsay. Fyi, I've dated other women, but YOU are the only one I'll ever truly LOVE, even if i never see you again. I screwed up. I shouldn't have let go of your hand, even if it hurt your fingers. I should've chased you down and expressed my love better. I'm the king of fools. I hope that somehow, some way, you've found some sense of happiness and joy in your life. I'M SORRY!!! munkeeOut
