How much did it cost? Berlingo Rear suspension is fixed! (and the front...)

  • Sadly, we couldn't film the work, but here we discuss how Bella the Berlingo was re-suspended - front and rear! As we needed Bella back in action ASAP, the work was farmed out to a local garage. How much did it cost and how much difference did it make? The work done was rear axle replacement, new rear wheel cylinders and a pair of new front springs.

Now I know there are cars like the 2CV for example which are long term cars whereas the daily transport tends to be expendable but I think this is your best family car since the C5. Having some this work I really think it would be worth going all in with this one for the long haul.it looks great with the camper and I've seen a lot of these vans with removable camper interiors. For the wheels, I know you’ve got the wheel trims sorted, but you could black the bumper plastics, door bump strips, mirror frame plastics, black gloss Hammerite the steel rims and some tyre shine, all after a machine polish, of course - she’d look “stealthy”
Don’t worry about the 800-and-odd quid spent on the suspension - think about the fuel savings, the Hotel bills ‘lost’ (and pleasure gained from using Bob) and you’ll recoup that cost in no time, plus, you get to keep Bella !

Very interesting, Ian. Great to see Bella getting the much needed attention. She appears to be in terrific shape over all, so the money spent will be well worth it.
When it comes to springs, especially coils at the front, they must be done in pairs. Same with strut inserts. A new part will always be different than an old part, and having a car that handles one way going left and another way going right is a recipe for disaster, and even moreso when used as a tow vehicle. Safety first.
I have to admit that as much as I dislike front wheel drive and small people movers, the Berlingo is not bad. Not my cup of tea but practical in a way most are not. Enjoy. I'm really looking forward to more fun.

I have done a similar job on my peugeot 205. Nothing was broken, but I upgraded to a wider and stiffer 309gti rear beam. Rebuilding them can be a bit of a faff when the torsion beams rust weld themselves to the arms. It's really nice how easy it is to then just swap the beams, because it's just a few bolts and they drop out.

Looking good 👍. Rear axles seem to be an age/environment sort of thing. I’ve had the pain of broken front spring on a 406. Fortunately missed the tyre but skewered the CV boot and came awfully close to wiping out the ABS sensor. Rear cylinders on some Citroen models seem to have a thing for the limiting valve ceasing up with the inevitable lack of rear brakes. Good to see what is arguably the most practical vehicle on the fleet back in better fettle.

When you buy a used car, expect to pay £500 plus for work, as when I bought a old Vectra needed £1300 on new brakes, springs, engine injectors/sensors, etc to get it up-to scratch - which I knew about it before I bought it - hence the price. Total cost of the car was £1950 plus bits, for 7 years ago, thinking back considering I'm still using the car, good motoring (obviously had springs/ servicing since then)

I've been considering a Berlingo, and have found the prices are already up there with the more exotic offerings in the 20 year old motor market 🤣

Had a 306 with similar issues. Decided scrap was the best place for it. Last French car I’ve owned.

Hi Ian and Mrs HubNut the Berlingo looks great although she could do with a good wax. Good value for money. I’ve always liked the Berlingos

the rear braKES could be the valve that is there to move pressure to the back when loaded, if it anything like the one on the Peugeot 106 will be seized , easy fix with wd and a mallet or fresh part

Well good to see Bella OK again. The problem with buying old cars is that you can be lucky or you can get disasters like this.
Positive is that this problem won't be back any time soon but it does harm your wallet.
I hope I get my invacar soon. They weren't sold out when I ordered. As soon as the order arrives, I can enroll my orange backpack with 3 tins of red bull (aygo b40 dynamic orange) into the HubNut Army. I did order some stickers and a Tee
Great vid again. Cheers you two.
