There's something refreshingly cheery about back-to-basics cars, no delusions of grandeur, just affordable A-to-B'ing without the unecessary fripperies of modern cars. Dad bought a similar-age Berlingo van when they moved house a few years ago, just for ferrying stuff about in during the move, and it was a great little runabout.

The rattle will more than likely be the actual tailgate catch. On the body of the car, usually there is some slack over time, can be heard at certain speeds. My solution is to wrap a small piece of sticky velco, the furry part of the velcro, around the latch on the body. It drove me nuts till I found it, good luck 👍

    • @bentullett6068
      @bentullett6068 2 года назад +4

Must be a Peugeot/Citroen thing as I had a Peugeot 206 hatchback that decided that its tailgate latch would work loose and cause the door to rattle. Also had another odd issue on that car as the radio aerial seals failed and on the one day during a heavy day of rain I had my own little little waterfall come through the map/valet interior light.

It's been my daily driver doing 35000 miles in 3 years with only one breakdown - the old battery died.
Citroen excelled with these simple skips on wheels.

Great video as usual. We purchased our Berlingo new 16 years ago. It was one of the very few cars you could put 3 car seats in the back easily. It is still our family car and has never given any problems. I sometimes think of changing it but it still drives great. It is just so practical if you need to transport large items. I checked a while back and even after 16 years the safety rating is still good. The only downside is the cost of the car tax which is very high, Only because the government want us to chance cars unnecessarily .

As others have suggested the rattle could be exhaust related. About 12 years ago a woman who worked next door to our workshop asked if I could try to figure out what was rattling in her car, which was a MK1 Megane Scenic 1.4 petrol, and it sounded similar to yours. She told me she had driven briskly through a large puddle to give her kids a thrill! I listened to it and had a look underneath to discover she had bent a heatshield inwards so that it was rattling against the exhaust. I adjusted it back to relatively normal and advised her not to do it again, as a bent heatshield could be the least of her concerns next time!

I am a real big fan of these type of vehicles. Very comfortable driving position and good clear view of the road. I am not bothered if I am not first away from the lights, to me it's all about the comfort and ease of maintenance. Personally I would of gone for the DW8 engine, I am a big fan of these. With regards to closing the sliding door, my mates Berlingo, you pull the handle to the rear to open it, and pull it to the front to take it off the retaining catch, is yours the same ? The other thing that catches people out, is trying to open the sliding door when you are refueling, it has a mechanism that prevents you opening it if the cap is off.

Borrow a subwoofer, do a frequency sweep from 10 to 200hz, and see if you can hear the rattle.

I have a 2003 Berlingo, not sure if a feature on your earlier version, but when fuel cap is removed it should in turn disable the opening of the rear o/s door - relation of mine had his finger broken when his youngest daughter slammed the sliding door back onto his hand while filling-up. Also if that door fails to open in normal everyday use it could be that mechanism at fault, small contact switch (not sure if mechanical or electrical) as cap is removed.

Great review, Ian. Wonderful to hear Carly in the video too. When it comes to tyres, get the best ones you can. The price difference can be minimal for a much better tyre. As an example, look at my 92 Crown Victoria. I had purchased a new set of Pirelli P3000 H speed rated tyres sized 225/70R25 for my 88 Crown Victoria. The same week a coworker bought a set of Daytona S speed rated tyres for his 92 Crown Victoria. When the 88 dies due to terminal rust, I bought that 92 Crown Vic. I put the Pirellis on the 92 and fuel consumption dropped. I gained a solid 75 miles per tank of gas. The kicker is that I paid less for the Pirellis than he had paid for the Daytonas.

OOOOOoooooo.....just seen the blanking plate on the green strip on the dash between the stereos (left of the Hazard Light switch). Perfect place to mount a dual USB charging plug in the dash! Yeah, I know you can get converters for the 12v power socket (aka cigarette lighter) but the little round USB charging point would look good there, makes the car look a bit more 'up spec' as its one less blank plug in the dash and best of all, means that any cords to all manner of windscreen-mounted things don't end up needing a mile long cable. Have a 2013 model Berlingo and it is the most useful, practical and comfortable car I have ever had and one I really don’t want to give up. Thought the kids would hate it for it’s van like looks, but they loved it for the space in the rear, much more than the Ford Focus estate we had before it. Interestingly the road space occupied by the Berlingo and a 2005 Focus estate is about the same, but the Berlingo has so much more internal space. When the kids moved out we could get all their stuff in it with two rear seats taken out. The 1.6 HDI engine has been reliable so far, and always seems to return 50 mpg no matter how it’s driven. People are fools for buying SUV’s cars like the Berlingo are so much more practical and of course cheaper to buy and run.

Weeks of driving about trying to pinpoint it, taking off trim to check for loose fixings, and general head-scratching - it evntually turned out to be the aerial, that is much the same as that on the Berlingo, tapping on the roof at a certain speed. Simply bending it up, further from the roof cured it.

As a previous minivan owner, may I suggest you silicone the locking mechanisms so they don't get stuck and that specific rattle may be due to a rear tire out of balance. I had that happen on a previous vehicle specifically at 60 miles an hour and as soon as I powered through it would go away. That is the clue. Have the rear tires balanced as they will cause a resonant buzz in your car at that certain speed that will rattle something in your car that normally doesn't rattle. Enjoy the Berlingo and spend some cash on it to improve the driving experience.

Nice one Ian, I remember a very annoying rattle in the back of my MKI Focus, I tightened the tale gate to spec, took out the spare wheel (remember those?) and car jack and it still rattled at exactly 30 mph, nice. I never did find the root cause over the years of ownership which was a shame as it was a brilliant car back in the very early 2000's. I'm slightly tempted to look at an old Berlingo as a car for load lugging that can also carry people so keep us posted on the progress.

If you haven't already done so; take a look at the heat shields that sit between the exhaust and the body. They have a habit of corroding at the mounting points and then flap around bouncing off the exhaust or underside of the floor at certain revs.

Looks like you’ve bagged a good ‘un. I like the Berlingo a lot - nice to drive, unassuming, roomy, practical. Keep it real, and don’t give in to the temptation of fitting things like alloy wheels. Although I am a committed Italian car fan, I’d have one of these over a Multipla anyday.

Have a look under the car, the rattle may be an exhaust mount or something simple like that, on my holden commodore I had a rattle like that and it was a hand brake cable making the noise.

I used to drive Berlingos doing deliveries in the early 2000s and they were my favourite van. Unlike the other vans at the time they were actually good to drive and comfortable and the diesel engines are superior too. Most of the rivals felt a lot cruder.

My dad had the Partner 2.0 HDI and he said it was one of the best cars he ever had. And yes the rear doors where a bugger on that as well. Not the greatest design. I think these cars will become rare but really practical classics. Good luck with noise finding. Bribe the kids with who ever finds it accurately on a trip gets a fiver.

I do like the interior because its colourful the green and the yellow and also the metalic green on the exterior and over 50 mpg great in these times of higher fuel prices and a turbo deisel looks spacious does it have air conditioning also looks like it needs a good service some sound deadening and getting rid of the triangle of doom much better than the other family vehicles you have bought this citroen belingo looks like a keeper as long as the engine and gearbox are good and its got no rust it is a keeper looking forward to more adventures in the Citroen Belingo

My Peugeot had a rattle in the tail gate caused by failure of a mastic joint between the inner/outer skins, Blue tac to the rescue worked. The two way exterior handle looks as though attention is required on the sliding doors.

I’ve recently fitted upgraded speakers to mine. I also fitted self adhesive sound deadening into the doors which was very easy and cheap to do. I didn’t go crazy I only fitted one piece in each door and the rear panelling to take away some of the tinnie sound. Also throw a cutting of carpet in the boot and spray some gravitex under the arches. It’s never going to be a rolls Royce but mines way better than it was. Might be worth talking to hdi tuning for a remap if your that way inclined. I can highly recommend them and I’ve had no drop in mpg.

Hi Ian. Very cheerful car. I hope it's a keeper.
One aside - you pronounce Citroën what is I guess the usual UK way, "sit-run."
The dots over the E (trema) are there to tell you how to pronounce the name correctly. Putting the dots over the E is a message - "pronounce these two vowels separately." "sit-ro-en."
I don't speak French myself but I love Citroëns.
Thanks to both of you for an entertaining video.

I maybe speak for myself to an extent but I think your viewers are the kind that like to believe that cheap cars still exist and can be run successfully on a shoestring as a daily so, naturally, we're drawn to the Berlingo. Plus, there is definitely a sense of "people's car" honesty and practicality about it which I like. Especially in lower spec

Thanks for the update, Ian. It's a great car, and you've landed on a good 'un. It should give you many miles of solid motoring to do the things you need for family, filming trips and so on. The perfect used car isn't out there, resist the urge to change. You've got something that works, ticks many boxes (not all, they NEVER tick all). So the sliding doors are a pain, wipers not right etc. They're not deal breakers. If the clutch goes, fix it. You've had it long enough and it's a known quantity worth fixing for a few hundred. Every used purchase is a risk, and a used near 20 year old purchase is a massive risk. The stress of getting another 'right one' just ain't worth it.

Providing to be a good family steed. Might be a good idea to go around the doors latches and hinges with a good clear spray grease to see if that will help with the back door sticking. Also just be aware the radio aerial seals on Peugeot/citroen vehicles do fail and can cause leaks through the interior valet/map light, I had a Peugeot 206 that did just that and ended up with a wet leg on a day of heavy rain.

Don't worry too much about the timing belt. I had a berlingo facelift with the Hdi engine and in 600 000 kilometers the belt was only change twice, at around 300 000 kilometers and then again at around 600 000 kilometers. Greetings

Usually if fleet car buyers buy models like the Berlingo by the thousand, year in, year out, it's probably a good sign that the vehicles are probably the best mix of value, tried and tested reliability, safety and economy. Basically a functional and sensible workhorse, if a bit dull. But I wouldn't mind that so much. The only issue I had about this model is that the MPV versions struck me as a bit dear, but I guess older used examples could well be good value.

My Berlingo steel wheels were almost rusting off the car when I bought mine, so I got some alloys. The OEM ones are the same as off a Citroen Picasso, called 'Estoril'. They aren't too showy and while I really love steel wheels, getting a set of used alloys was cheaper for me at the time.

With respect to getting a few more horses out of it, find a good local tuner, get them to install the interwarmer and remap it on, explicitly, a rolling road and get a custom map for it; it'll cost a bit more than a 'default' map but you'll get more drivability and power our of it with a custom map tuned for an intercooler to your tastes.
If you're ever up in Leeds I'd suggest RS Tuning based on custom set ups friends have had there, bit I'm sure you can find a local quality tuner in deepest Wales!

I'd test fit any 14" alloys before committing to them, to see if they clear the brakes. I've had my Berlingos on 14" steel Rallye wheels of a 106, yellow under my green one, black under a silver one and white under a red one and the Romahome. Mind the offset of any wheels you buy from other Citroëns or Peugeots, as these require a fairly low offset.

You could try finding an aftermarket Dial Facia kit to resolve your flaky dials.
What the availability is for a Berlingo 1 is though, I couldn't say.
If you went down the route of a used replacement Dial pack you would need to find someone able to re flash the odometer to keep the mileage correct.

Thank you for the Berlingo update video. Good to hear things go well. The Welsh roads from the cockpit are just fantastic, the 'HubNut Oval'. Hope you get round to the further improvements, perhaps there is a local tyre shop you can partner with to refresh the Berlingo's shoes. Curious too to learn if there is a name in the works for this fleet member.
