@@aaronshouting588 I'd say while Psycho had lot of elements, it's more of a psychological thriller than a slasher. Also I personally don't consider Peeping Tom a slasher, but I do think it's an inspiration. Blood and Black Lace (1964), A Bay of Blood (1971) and Torso (1973) had a lot more in common with Black Christmas and Halloween than Psycho does. According to PasteMagazine (What Truly Was the First “Slasher Film”? A Paste Investigation), Sergio Martino's Torso a.k.a. The Bodies Bear Traces of Carnal Violence is the very first film that meets all the slasher criteria ("killer’s POV shots; extremely graphic killings; a secluded location; constant themes of voyeurism; a masked killer; an actual final girl; [...]").

@@avantgarde4158 I think all of those Italian movies you listed there are part of an entirely different breed of slashers called “Giallo” which is a genre that has many familiar formulas that one would find in a typical slasher flick from that era. I’m not talking about those. I’m talking about the more mainstream movies that everyone knows and talks about which is of course, Halloween, Friday the 13th, TCM, Black Christmas, Psycho etc etc. But yes you are right with your assessment in that those movies did it first and whatnot… also I disagree with you about both Psycho and Peeping Tom not being slashers. They are definitely slasher movies and are highly considered pioneers of the genre!

All the scenes in the house at the end of _Massacre_ bring the movie to a higher level. I re-watched that part for the first time in quite a while and it made me feel tight in the chest from how chaotic it is. The constant screaming, the Sawyers yelling at each other, everyone being covered in sweat/grime/blood, the furniture made of human body parts, the grinding industrial noise that makes up the "soundtrack," etc. coalesce to form this atmosphere of horrible, nightmarish delirium. The hitchhiker and cook characters are hamming it up, but them being so animated and over-the-top added to the feverish "unreality" of the situation.

Loved that film, but Bob Clark's Black Christmas and the North American slasher genre in general are heavily inspired by Italian giallo, a genre that doesn't get enough recognition imo. It continues to inspire and influence generations of filmmakers. Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho, for instance, looks clearly inspired by Mario Bava's Blood and Black Lace (1964). Sergio Martino's Torso may be the first slasher film, as it predates Black Christmas by a year.

Opening shot is of a ridiculous castle hospital.
Opening scene contains lines such as:
    "It's like he's........DRINKING the electricity!!"
    "He's broadcasting his THOUGHTS!"
"You've been a BAD BOY, Gabriel!"
"It's time to CUT OUT the CANCER." (with dramatic zoom).

Black Christmas (74) is usually cited as the original Slasher film. It was released on the exact same day as Texas Chainsaw, but its structure and tropes are much closer to what you'd expect from an old school slasher. John Carpenter actually said Halloween was originally his fantasy sequel to Black Christmas. I think Texas Chainsaw's influence was more through the iconagraphy of Leatherface. He's absolutely the first of that Slasher style of killer, where it's more of a highly recognisable modern age Universal monster than a person.

    SPOILERS FOR MALIGNANT
I watched Malignant high as fuck and all the tonal clashing in the first portion came across a lot funnier and I THINK it's intentional.
I am fairly confident that James Wan essentially made a prank film, it is played self seriously enough to lure people into a false sense of security but there are little hints and nuggets to suggest what is coming, for example the opening scene, the comedically abusive boyfriend, the ultra schlocky b-movie acting, the drawing of the villian that was given to the police ect ect. It starts to boil up a bit as it goes, I think the best mid point example is the chase scene, watching that goofy fucking monster parkour down the stairs then tarzan swing in the underground section was pretty fucking hilarious.
And obviously the ending is *chef's kiss*
Now I'm not 100% sure how much of this was intentional and I 100% plan on rewatching it because i was way too cooked to give it an objective look HOWEVER no one can take that first watch experience away from me and I'm so glad I got to experience it at least once, hopefully on rewatch it will be more clearly intentional but who the fuck knows.

Alex casually, but coolly correcting Adam's mispronunciation of invalid (because it's a homonym of invalid, though very similar meanings) is really funny. It was the 70s, it was a couple of years off from the word "wheelchair bound", and the now preferred term "persons who uses a wheelchair." Also RIP Tobe Hooper. The guerilla style filmmaking that made the original TCM look more like a documentary shot on 16mm than a feature length motion picture was genius. The marketing of the film and opening crawl claiming this as based on true events was genius. The kills being so tame compared to today, and yet so effective that people thought they saw the hook go through Pam's shoulder was genius. Everything from the lighting in the night shots, the use of a real chainsaw, the actual chase through the woods at night, the night shoots being lit with whatever was on hand, and so so much more make this the most effective and influential horror film ever made in my opinion.
tl;dr TCM is amazing, go watch it

    *My Mario Movie pitch:*
I think the best route for a Mario movie would be a comedy. Make Mario the straight man dealing with the absurdity of the Mushroom Kingdom and make everyone else hilarious: Peach, Luigi, Toad, and Bowser. Like have the movie begin with Mario finishing an epic adventure where he has finally rescued Peach from Donkey Kong. Present it like a final scene of a movie where the protagonists are relieved, they begin to celebrate, and BAM! Bowser comes in and kidnaps Peach. Mario goes WTF and has to start all over, just completely exhausted and frustrated. This is where the movie begins. Now, Mario's new adventure begins and the movie proper starts; however, this is Mario's life. Bowser has kidnapped Peach a million times before and Mario is questioning the point of his life and wants to fundamentally change the dynamics of everything he deals with. Also, while Mario is doing Mario things like fighting Koopas and stuff, Mario can comment on how he's worried about Peach, but the movie will then cut to Peach and Bowser each time actually having a great fucking time in Bowser's Castle: racing Go Karts, playing tennis and golf, etc. At the end, Mario learns this, realizes everyone is dysfunctional, and has to set things straight where he and Bowser and Peach have to stop their cycle of craziness. It works, everything looks bright for the Mushroom Kingdom. Right before the movie ends, Mario is relaxing on a recliner, finally has a break, cut to a portal opening in the sky, Nintendo franchise characters pour out and they warn a martial arts tournament to save the world is imminent, Mario is needed, and you see Master Hand from Smash Bros. hanging above. Mario crushes his beer and starts grimacing. It ends in him yelling at the camera. The dude just never gets a break.

Feminine body all bent backwards, she's at all the muders, and "where is my mind" like a nod to fight club cos every movie that has that twist can't pretend everyone's already seen it in fight club. It's like that "Edward Mordrake" meme- guy in victorian times or whatever had a female face on the back of his head who would whisper to him to kill people etc. Pretty sure there's a character like Mordrake in American Horror Story, too.
