    Adum's response to the queer characters question was basically my internal response as well. There's not one correct way to write (or be) lgbtq+. it depends on not only the context of the story and the author's intent, but how the individual interprets the text. The way a queer character is written might make some people feel seen and heard and make others feel pandered to or alienated. All you can do as an author is write something authentic to your story.

    Spiral should have tried to trick the audience by showing the dead body of the villain and then revealing it was a fake at the end. He made a perfect life-like duplicate of himself lmao, thats something the old saw movies would do

    •  2 года назад

      The problem wasn't not showing the body, but not showing his death scene at all. My solution for this would be to have a livestream, to give him a reason to fake his death, not just for the audience but for Chris Rock and the other cops. It would even give a sense of urgency, with Chris Rock trying to discover where it's being filmed and trying to save his partner. He would then "die" on camera, be revealed alive at the end and say he faked the footage with CGI or something.

    Luca might have been the single most pleasant viewing experience I've ever had with a movie. There's a certain "purity" and innocence to the world and the characters that I've never seen to this extent. The low stakes are very much a deliberate choice in accentuating that feeling. To be completely honest, no Ghibli movie has replicated the "wholesome-ness" feeling for me at this same level. I cannot believe none of the Sards liked the voice acting, I don't think the movie would work at all without their extremely lovable performances. I wasn't that surprised none of them enjoyed it much, though; cynicism is kinda the brand of this podcast.

    luca is great because it doesnt try to be the next wall e or toy story. sure it can be predictable but its story just feels pure and fun to watch like a slice of life movie. its very ghibli like where its low stakes and relaxing and pleasent and feels kinda small stakes like my neighbor totoro or kiki’s delivery service (ik ghibli has grand movies too but im talking more of the slice of life movies). i feel like if this was a ghibli film it would be getting lots of praises like its the next kiki’s delivery service but since its pixar people expect grander which i feel like people dismiss it so much. its simple and its an enjoyable watch with great characters, beautiful animation and is just a charming film. i can definitely see this as a cult classic one day in like 10-20 years.

    • @skepticfilmbuff3885
      @skepticfilmbuff3885 3 года назад +5

      I see this defense all the time for the movie but I just don’t see it. It was never the low stakes that were a problem for me - I’ve seen movies/shows like that and enjoyed them (first thing that comes to mind is Cowboy Bebop, where the tone is very laid back though there is some violence), and honestly the movie’s plot at least was paced fine. It seemed like Luca just took storylines from other movies and didn’t develop on them. You say they’re great characters, but I just saw them as generic and couldn’t feel for them. I’ve seen these archetypes in other movies done much better, especially the mother character (Wolfwalkers, Finding Nemo have protective father characters done well). I also don’t see the Ghibli comparison - I guess the character design, but Miyazaki movies also had more interesting worlds they occupied, as well as more interesting characters. The world in Luca felt somewhat empty to me (no offense to Italy).
      I’m okay with low stakes movies/shows but usually there’s something else to make up for that in the narrative. I just found myself bored. Tbf I have not seen Kiki’s delivery service so maybe then I’ll see why people love Luca? I’m glad you and a lot of other people enjoyed it more than me, sometimes I just can’t seem to see what other people see in a movie but that’s okay.

    • @anthonymartensen3164
      @anthonymartensen3164 3 года назад

      @@skepticfilmbuff3885 KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE is all about a young girl moving to a big city, getting a job, and learning responsibility (and she's a witch who delivers mail on her broomstick) and it's an absolute masterpiece. So lo-key and small. Just a girl doing her delivery job. More "big" movies should dare to be that small.

    • @jadeandjesse5908
      @jadeandjesse5908 3 года назад

      @@iansmart4158 Well yes, but Kiki has a unique an interesting premise that is completely built off of Kiki being a witch and it's all about her witch powers. Luca doesn't utilize the water world, or Italy in any kind of real important thematic way. It just takes place in Italy because it's pretty, it's about fish people because kid's movie and thinly veiled allegory for a fish out of water story. Kiki and Luca are only comparable because they're small, slice-of-life films, and Kiki isn't great because it's a small story, but because Kiki is such a endearing and lovable character going through something interesting. And in 1988, it was more original. Not everything has to be ground breaking but being forgettable is worse than being bad imo

    i love Almost Famous and i wondered if they'd mention the main boys acting. I think his line delivery is so flat that it actually helps lend to his childlike naivety, Idk he just has this simple genuine wide-eyed energy that i get. It makes the dirtier sadder elements of the film hit harder because he really seems like a kid.

      Those were my exact thoughts towards his performance as well. Like certain line deliveries such as "where and when does this real world occur" and basically that whole speech may hit the ear a bit sharply, but it never once detracted from the film for me. It fit. It feels like a real 15-year old kid who's trying to figure out how to act around all of these other people around you that seem to know EXACTLY how to act -- to be cool. Fuck, I sounded like him when I was 15. I understand where Adam is coming from though. We all have different tastes, and life experiences and interests color our perception of film. It's not perfect but I do love Almost Famous as a total experience.

    Some buildings don't have Entresuelo and/or Principal anymore, but historically, Entresuelo was where the staff that did the upkeeping, and the rich people lived in Principal.

It's unfair to compare it to anything) but watch PORCO ROSSO, CASTLE IN THE SKY, PONYO. Amazing movies about simple characters dealing with ethical (and dangerious) problems. KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE is a masterpiece and it's just about a girl getting a job and paying her bills. That's the beauty of Myiazaki. Finding wonder in the mundane. Finding kindness at the heart of conflict.
