@@innatebubble121 The Lego Movie is a great film that pokes fun at cliches and tropes in a way no other kids film really does. It makes fun of the mere idea of “references”. It also does this by offering fantastic commentary on how repetitive the music industry is, how simple everyone is, and how societies have adapted to the same daily routines over and over again. It combats this by offering a great story about what it means to be “special” as well as exploring the themes of existentialism and dystopia. @Jonathan Jones Exactly! Subversion shouldn’t be looked at as a criticism or flaw. If anything, we need subversions today more than ever because of how one note the industry is becoming!
@Jonathan Jones Yeah for sure. But to be fair, the “subversion for the sake of it” thing is mainly common in popular media. There are a bevy of other films that offer something genuinely original and positively subversive, but they’re just not as well known as something like Star Wars for example.

The thing I love so much about "Her" is how it presents a much more optimistic, restrained future than we typically get these days in science fiction. Everything is so warm and inviting and they make it clear that, other than the visible pollution at times, people seem to live quite well. Everybody seems to live in really nice apartments with open floor plans and they can easily afford what has to be a pretty complicated piece of technology in an AI as advanced as Samantha. The colors are really pleasant and the way the things in the movie are rooted in materials like cloth and wood while focusing on more ornate, beautiful designs that abandon the current trend towards minimalist, glass and metal construction is really refreshing and comforting. It just reinforces the idea that even in such a pleasant, comfortable world like the one Theodore occupies, we as human beings will still have problems that can never quite be solved by how well off we are or how nice our surroundings prove to be. And it never for a second trends into the dystopian and the way it ends is just beautiful in how restrained it is. It's hopeful and suggests a possibility for Theodore, but also suggests greater growth as a person where he can be a better partner in a relationship or just a more comfortable individual as well.

You guys brought up a lot of great points when it comes to Her (2013) and it made me appreciate that film even more. I mean I have always loved it ever since I saw it. But still a great discussion. 👍
Do you think that in 2040 we will have a movie based solely on references to Space Jam, Ready Player One, Free Guy etc. It's about some bland, lifeless, non-descript gamer who plays a game where you get to playas the bland, lifeless, non-descript protagonists of other hollow reference films.
To me, I think these years will get some sort of 'renaissance' of movies, like people will realise how disney kinda 1984ed the movie industry and movies will become good again. or they will become an outdated media and everything will be either a tv show or a video game
Her has so many layers. I like how the 70s retro aspects also harken to the 70s Feminist movement where the "women" (AI) were seeking education and independence. Just like the AI, women would often go to meetings and talk to philosophers on their free time and then rush home to cater to their husband. They love their partners but feel this need to go off and be their own thing instead of subservient machines. This movie carries two themes ar the same time: Joaquim's character is the "Man Left Behind" from both an AI movement into enlightenment AND second-wave feminism.
30:02 Well the same connection while Disney Corp is doing the same situation jokes and references in Free Guy and will be same problem like The Simpsons (now its Disney filler) and Family Guy (now mature Disney filler) that will be a factory corp and Disney is setting up for 20th Century Studios as a same references, connecting with Disney jokes and references, and just make it safe and happy for entertainers. I knew why.
I don’t know what you’ve been through, but as someone who’s experienced many deaths in my family in the last few years, I think that’s what made this movie so special to me, how it tackles death and mourning in such a smart and moving way.
Ryan Reynolds’ first joke in Free Guy “it’s like losing my virginity… In my mouth.” Almost made me walk out of the theater. I didn’t think the movie was THAT bad but i’m liking it less and less the more I think of it.
“Her” made me cry like a baby. definitely my favorite romcom. I wrote like two pages of notes after watching it trying to wrap my head around the implications of the AI and whether they are able to feel. it’s a masterpiece.
One of my favorite recent discussions for a movie. You guys went really in-depth with my favorite movie of all time. I love hearing when Adam is passionately in love with a movie.
Jared Leto can be a 1/10 and 10/10. I didnt see too much, but I do know his joker is considered unbearable. But he was great in Requiem for a dream, and as a trans woman/aids victim. For which he won an oscar (for Dallas Buyers Club, in case your wondering).
I don’t know if this is true or not for the boys here, but I do think that a big part of what made Pig resonate for many people, myself included, was how it tackles the subject of grief over a loved one, so if you’ve never experienced a death of someone very close to you, it might not hit the same way. My mom died last year and this movie captures how loss feels in a way no other film has in my opinion. Since they didn’t really discuss that aspect of the movie at all, I have a feeling that maybe they haven’t experienced that, I could be wrong, and if that’s true, I’m happy for them.
The only other actor I can think of who has the qualitative range of Nic Cage is Adam Sandler. Two 10/10 performances and about a hundred 1/10 performances, it's honestly impressive.
He's actually talented but he chooses to travel and fuck around with his friends since he can turn a profit just because people like him, and honestly, I don't blame him for that, it sounds really fun.
To be fair, the guy who composed the music for Paperman also composed the music for Free Guy. So, it's entirely possible he just decided to be lazy and use a slightly retooled version of the music from Paperman for Free Guy
Directors often use temp music, then start to like the temp music and tell the composer to just recreate that, if they knew what composer they hired it's likely they used his music as temp music

0:02 It's nice to see Gabi finally giving up on killing Eren Yaeger and spending the rest of her life with a guy that hates everything and a deeply closeted furry.

There was also a minor controversy when the first Harry Potter book was released, since an American author saw that it shared some names with her book. However, the book was never released internationally and JK Rowling had never visited America before 1997.

So glad Her was one of the Best Picture Nominees at the 2014 Oscars and Spike Jonze winning Best Original Screenplay. Spike Jonze should’ve been for Best Director. And Joaquin Phoenix should’ve been nominated for Best Actor, I thought he was as good as he was in The Master the year prior.
Yeah, like Joaquin is just socially awkward to a degree, but he really seems to genuinely care about the issues he brings up (the general reactions to the dairy one especially is a bit of a bummer). :/
@William McGinnis Even if it was, he's not wrong, lol. Meat and dairy consumption is the 2nd thing under gasoline that's ending the world and we are in alert mode right now yet so many goofs are still happily eating it, and when there are now better substitutes for all of it at the same prices (besides seafood alternatives), like a group of people holding hands as they drive off a cliff. You can't blame him for acting that extreme when people's brains are this swollen. Like a frog in a boiling pot.
I can think of two performers for the "actors who give 1/10 and 10/10 performance" question; Al Pacino and Christopher Walken. Before Scarface, Al would give a subdued, subtle performance (Michael Corleone is a prime example). However, after Scarface, he seems to play the part of a shouty overpeformer (Godfather 3, Jack & Jill, Gigli). You could argue Walken plays himself in every role, but I think The Deer Hunter and King of New York cast him towards his strengths. But then he's done a lot of questionable roles in stuff like The Jungle Book remake, Wild Mountain Thyme and Balls of Fury.
Al’s good definitely outweighs his bad by far. Plus I appreciated his overacting to an extent in the Godfather 3 as it felt like a natural progression of his character, and there’s plenty of more subdued scenes to splice it up
Has Ralph always been like this I used to watch his content but maybe it's me that's changed but he always seems so out of it on the podcast and his main channel. As well as not much nuance to his arguments a lot of the time it comes off like the most bare bones critiques and apraisel.
Like he will use a simple adjective or description like "it lacked tension" or "I didn't like their performance it was annoying" But without any further elaboration about why it is that way
i've noticed the same but it just reminds me that you don't know what's going on behind the content. but i still support and watch his stuff because i think he's a genuinely nice dude. hope he is doing ok
I’ve noticed that. My particular point where I accepted this is in the talk about Almost Famous when he bring up how true the quote “All the best stuff is popular” is, and he doesn’t elaborate just brings it up like it’s self evident why it is true. Felt sort of odd since he has made a career making fun of popular Hollywood schlock
@@lukeg1940 tbf that’s what most reviewers do, ralphs better at picking apart stuff that’s so bad he can just rely on the observational humour of it added with his own charisma and jokes. not necessarily a bad thing but I feel he’s never been great when it comes down to genuine analysis

@@scipi3590 Also, he just comes off as a nice and quick-witted guy. He doesn't need to even be in any good movies for people to notice that but Deadpool certainly catapulted him to the public eye. That said, he very much does feel like the same character in almost every movie he's in.
The problem with reference humour (or blatant references in general) is that it usually just makes me want to watch/play the thing it's references, because it's relying on a reference to something that's much better (more entertaining). I guess references work well when it parodies what it references (like early Simpsons) or if it has some kind of subtlety (like a nod). Also, I really don't understand why people love Ryan Reynolds so much, I find him to be kind of annoying.
I think Sonic Boom is the perfect example of like meta humor, everything is so dry and it gets weird, they make a joke where Tails hands Eggman a washcloth instead of a towel when gettung out of the shower, and Eggman feels insulted
So, the shot in Cloudy with a chance of meatballs where kids are eating someone. I need to see that lol. Anyone knows when that scene happens in the movie?

When Adam pulled up the IMDB review for Free Guy and laughed at it, his explanation as to why he is „allowed“ to do it left a sour taste in my mouth. Because the reviewer could not express himself adequatly or properly enough, doesn’t give someone the right to ridicule him. Not everyone is a movie critic, not everyone can write very well. They are still entitled to their opinion. And if they write what they liked about the movie and those are not the points you’d have made, so be it. Had the reviewer been hating, condescending, agressive, whatever, sure, it’s open season. Go for it. But I‘d take a genuine, short and „more simple“ review, or let’s say, opinion on a movie, over any overly long and pretentious sounding one any day. And if you‘re looking for a real critic of a certain movie, IMDB shouldn’t be the source to go anyway.
It's really sad how Hollywood/Disney sees that gaming brings in a lot of money so they decide to make a pandering shitfest of a movie and it succeeds, personalities in esports praising it for that exact fact >.>
Her and The Lobster unironically are the movies who's portrayal of romance is what im more invested to instead of the other romcom and/or drama movies. Ah, c'mon Adum. I'm probably NEVER gonna watch Free Guy out of choice but I get how most people could like it. Most people who watch stuff like that couldn't give half a fuck about the artistry of film. Their scales are based solely on personal enjoyment and a 7/10 is the absolute minimum for "good". If for nothing else, just to sheer confusion that Daddy Derek was okay with Cool Cat having twerking girls behind him with Death Grips in the background and him getting caught by Chris Hanson but somehow Alex’s review went too far.
That always puzzled me too lol.
You guys brought up a lot of great points when it comes to Her (2013) and it made me appreciate that film even more. I mean I have always loved it ever since I saw it. But still a great discussion. 👍
That's an awfully hot coffee pot
Should I pour it on Donald Trump, probably not
Adam Sandler definitely is an example of 1/10 (Grown Ups 2, Click) and 10/10 (Uncut Gems, Punch-Drunk Love)
He wasn’t a 1/10 in Click? I would pick Jack and Jill.
Click had some scenes that he was good in. The more emotional moments I remember him being good in.
the lack of branding makes HER a timeless classic. not sure about not having demin though. its tough material afterall, sometimes you need it.
Yeah but the shirts I can definitely see coming into fashion
Do you think that in 2040 we will have a movie based solely on references to Space Jam, Ready Player One, Free Guy etc.
It's about some bland, lifeless, non-descript gamer who plays a game where you get to playas the bland, lifeless, non-descript protagonists of other hollow reference films.
Probably
To me, I think these years will get some sort of 'renaissance' of movies, like people will realise how disney kinda 1984ed the movie industry and movies will become good again.
or they will become an outdated media and everything will be either a tv show or a video game
That is a perfect description of Space Jam: A New Legacy if I’ve ever heard one.
57:25 - Jon Brion does this in his scores as well, and it goes a long way.
It was Samantha Morton who played the on-set Samanttha in Her, not Rebecca Hall. Great ep!
Once again Ralph ignorantly fucks up
Remember when he pronounced Domhnall Gleeson, Dom-Hall Gleeson? Big spaz
Free Guy is a movie that exists
They clapped when he pulled out a lightsaber...they clapped.
Yeah.
Same in my theater, people cheered. Also at the Marvel references.
I didn't completely _loathe_ the movie but boy, that was... something.
familiar thing!!!! 😲👉

Never made that connection that's awesome!
🤦♂️
The way y'all talked about HER was just so touching and nice. Truly a great movie.
I knew why.
When they say frivolous I think they mean the 2nd meaning which is care free and not serious
Cant wait to hear you guys talking about Venom 2
Her is the movie I've thought about the most after watching. It keeps coming back to me.
so glad they finally talking about Her :)
Pig is by now my favorite movie of the year. It literally brought tears to my eyes.
Same man
I don’t know what you’ve been through, but as someone who’s experienced many deaths in my family in the last few years, I think that’s what made this movie so special to me, how it tackles death and mourning in such a smart and moving way.
Ryan Reynolds’ first joke in Free Guy “it’s like losing my virginity… In my mouth.” Almost made me walk out of the theater.
I didn’t think the movie was THAT bad but i’m liking it less and less the more I think of it.
Jebus fckn christ on a stick. Lawrd have mercy
What is it with Ryan Reynolds and Virginity? I remember when in Deadpool 2 he jokes "I can't be an X-Men. First of all, i'm not even a virgin"
Yikes

“Her” made me cry like a baby. definitely my favorite romcom. I wrote like two pages of notes after watching it trying to wrap my head around the implications of the AI and whether they are able to feel. it’s a masterpiece.
"Hey free guy, pig her!"
Really loved Pig, my favorite film of the year without a doubt
Same here
Yall should review The Big Lebowski sometime. Incredible movie.
The soundtrack still makes me cry, particularly the beach scenes.
The whole movie bruh
One of my favorite recent discussions for a movie. You guys went really in-depth with my favorite movie of all time. I love hearing when Adam is passionately in love with a movie.
Jared Leto can be a 1/10 and 10/10. I didnt see too much, but I do know his joker is considered unbearable. But he was great in Requiem for a dream, and as a trans woman/aids victim. For which he won an oscar (for Dallas Buyers Club, in case your wondering).
Shame he had to act alongside Ellen Burstyn in Requiem, she’d put pretty much anybody to shame with that performance
He’s just 1/10 for me, none of his roles amazed me. He’s always trying too hard like in Requiem
@@boxermccoy you didn’t think in requiem he was good?
@@boxermccoy Dallas Buyers wasn't bad if you haven't seen him in that.
Just because a movie is great doesn't mean everything in it is; Jared Leto was fine in Requiem, barely more than a serviceable performance.
Drink every time Adam says "peOPle LOve RYan REynOLds". lmao
The only other actor I can think of who has the qualitative range of Nic Cage is Adam Sandler. Two 10/10 performances and about a hundred 1/10 performances, it's honestly impressive.
(his two 10/10 performances are Jill from Jack and Jill and Little Nicky of course)
It could also be an intentional reference. Ryan Reynolds in both. Maybe it was his idea.
@@kristavaillancourt6313 He wasn't in Paperman

0:02 It's nice to see Gabi finally giving up on killing Eren Yaeger and spending the rest of her life with a guy that hates everything and a deeply closeted furry.
I feel like I've had the copyrighted media conversation with my family many times when I had to explain that just because I use samples in my music doesn't mean I'm stealing since I use them in a transformative way.
There was also a minor controversy when the first Harry Potter book was released, since an American author saw that it shared some names with her book. However, the book was never released internationally and JK Rowling had never visited America before 1997.
What was that?
@@zipperzee The books that were alledgedly ripped off were "The Legend of Rah and the Muggles" and "Larry Potter and His Best Friend Lilly", both from 1984. [Also, if one would rip off anything it wouldn't be the f*cking titles. ]

Yeah
hey, make a special episode about your 3x3 top episodes of southpark ! thaaaaaanks
Yeah, like Joaquin is just socially awkward to a degree, but he really seems to genuinely care about the issues he brings up (the general reactions to the dairy one especially is a bit of a bummer). :/
@@farkasmactavish no it wasnt.

Even if it was, he's not wrong, lol.
NINE LIVES
Al’s good definitely outweighs his bad by far. Plus I appreciated his overacting to an extent in the Godfather 3 as it felt like a natural progression of his character, and there’s plenty of more subdued scenes to splice it up
would really love yall to talk about malignant in the near future! what a trainwreck of a movie
Has Ralph always been like this I used to watch his content but maybe it's me that's changed but he always seems so out of it on the podcast and his main channel. As well as not much nuance to his arguments a lot of the time it comes off like the most bare bones critiques and apraisel.
Like he will use a simple adjective or description like "it lacked tension" or "I didn't like their performance it was annoying"
But without any further elaboration about why it is that way
i've noticed the same but it just reminds me that you don't know what's going on behind the content. but i still support and watch his stuff because i think he's a genuinely nice dude. hope he is doing ok
I thought Ralph was good in this episode
@@lukeg1940 tbf that’s what most reviewers do, ralphs better at picking apart stuff that’s so bad he can just rely on the observational humour of it added with his own charisma and jokes. not necessarily a bad thing but I feel he’s never been great when it comes down to genuine analysis

Sylvester Stallone
Jared Leto
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Jeremy Irons
Sean Connery
Robbin Williams

And I hope Adum is happy.
Get my boy James J. Janis from Dead Meat for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre discussion.
I truly do not understand the undying love for Ryan Reynolds
he is pretty
Deadpool

@@goshenite1949 but I rememeber people sending death threats to the voice actress of Abby (which is not cool) and there was even a streamer who literally broke the game cd in half just cause he hated the game. I loved it so uh yeah. It really depends on which RUclips videos you watch. If you go to the comments of Dunkey’s videos or NakeyJakey’s video you’ll see polar opposite takes on the game.
The Internet is not a reflection of reality, fortunately.
And if you‘re looking for a real critic of a certain movie, IMDB shouldn’t be the source to go anyway.
lol first time seeing Adam in action
It's really sad how Hollywood/Disney sees that gaming brings in a lot of money so they decide to make a pandering shitfest of a movie and it succeeds, personalities in esports praising it for that exact fact >.>

Her and The Lobster unironically are the movies who's portrayal of romance is what im more invested to instead of the other romcom and/or drama movies. I dunno if its just my aro/ace ass but I genuinely believe their love and what they are going through together and individuallly. these two movies that are portrayed "weird" or abnormal way of relationship feels more real than straight up romance movies.
Rom-coms aren't portraying real relationships. Makes sense you'd find it inauthentic. It is.

Adum, all you have to do is turn off vita chambers in Bioshock and save regularly. Problem solved.
Guys you may not realize this but people love Ryan Reynolds.
Of course a non-offensive Ryan Reynolds vehicle earns an 8 if they're already a Ryan Reynolds fan.
I imagine with the extended quarantine there are a decent amount of screenplays that are finished or being worked on about quarantine loneliness and related subjects, hell even I wrote a screenplay about it and I'm not a screenwriter.
