I have a Beaumark chest freezer and in 2023 it'll be 30 yeas old, and it's still going strong. And throughout the years, it has never ONCE needed any repairs or service. It just doesn't want to die! My grandmother had a similar experience with her chest freezer. Her's was a Kenmore and it lasted for 30+ years as well.
Chest freezers are less prone to freezer burn. They also have less components that could fail. For long term storage the chest freezer seems like a better option.
Was hoping upright freezer would be good. My mom is in need of something more accessible now and she's about 5ft tall.. chest freezer can be a challenge reaching items at bottom ahaha.
@@johnw3794 maybe look at baskets with handles that stack for her - the container store has recycling bins that some youtubers demo -at 5' myself i have been looking at options (other than my sons) to reach bottom items
Our house we bought 16 years ago came with an upright freezer. I absolutely love it. i would never go back to a chest freezer. The convenience of seeing everything you have in an upright is worth it for me. No more bending over trying to dig out something from the bottom.
I have had a chest freezer for about 7 years. Bending over and in the freezer is a bit of an issue. Finding the right frozen food item is also a little more difficult. I buy plastic containers that are small, medium and large - ALL with the same lid size. I stick painters tape on top of each lid and write description and date of each container. I also stack them in "pillars", one on top of each other. This way you can store a meat, stew, soup or vegetable pillar, which makes it easy to know when and what to re-order :-)
Cold air sinks, chest freezers are like a big bucket of cold air, whereas with uprights, the cold air comes flooding out onto the ground when you open the door.
Great information. I instinctively picked the chest freezer for keeping the cold air in. Now I know why I didn't get the freezer burn that I heard about.
One very important consideration is the real estate required for a freezer. A freezer may take a 3' x 3' space as a minimum (about 10 SF). If your home costs $1,000 (or $2,000 for a 6' wide chest freezer), the real estate needed for the freezer is $1,000. Obviously if you have plenty of unused space in your home, this is not too concerning. But, if you are sacrificing space for alternate storage or use, you do lose that space during the time of freezer ownership. (Do you really have room in your garage? - Or will you sacrifice a parking space there?)
Great video. I can't do a chest freezer, I'm too short and can never reach things at the bottom. Also they take up to much real estate. Upright for me, the organization is much better. I'm waiting on my Frigidaire Refrigerator to be delivered. I'm looking to get the same brand for a upright freezer.
So clear presentation , learned from you and I am practicing my explanation for the freezer from our factory in China. You have done a great job. Thumb up!
Very cool We have a chest freezer that was sitting in storege for a year, I just plugged it in and stasrted putting stuff i it including ice cream. I noticed it was not cold enough even after 8 hours.
My Liebherr upright regular(static) manual defrost freezer cames with separate 6 drawers ( that you can open just one at the time , the one you need) . The manual upright freezer one (static) in this video has no separate drawers and of course is less efficient and will need to be defrosted more often than the ones with drawers, because everytime you open the front door a lot of cold will flow out downward ) . My Liebherr regular static Upright freezer is still working perfectly after 25 years..... According to my one experience static is far better because no electronic boards and complicated sensors devices in the frost free ones. Just defrost the static regular upraight freezer every 6 months and will last almost forever.......and is more efficient than the frost free ones.....but separate drawers are a must.......and more convenient than the chest freezers, where sometimes is hard and complicated to find the frozen food you need...
Pretty cool literally --Very good overview. Longtime upright owner here I just wanted to check if chest's were better for me. I will stick to the uprights thanks.
I just move to the US, and manual defrost is not a thing in my third world country, even small freezer are self defrost and super cheap. I can’t believe this 😩😩
@@fredygonzalez962 I have the Medea MRU03M2ABB. I got it from Amazon through a shipping co as I am not in the U.S. It is a manual defrost. It was frosted up the 1st week of getting it. I have the setting below 1 and it still frosts up. The ice is coming out the door a few days after defrosting. I didn’t know there was such a thing as manual defrost. Have to defrost at least once a month, there is ice everywhere.
@@adamwakelymusic You can use crates to organize. Some people like me want the absolute best in temperature control not the wild fluctuation with opening and closing of the freezer door. Also you have to work on eating the food in the freezer and keep it no more than 1/2 full to be able to get to the bottom. My sister had too much food in a small chest freezer and it was unusable. I started eating them and made enough room to get to the bottom. Also, if you create thermal mass with gallons of salt water, the chest freezer can survive many days with no power. For the upright , you're screwed if you are out of power for a couple of days. You can lose everything.
Spending an extra $35 or so a year for electricity to power an upright freezer is no game changer for me, nor should it be for anyone. Trivial complaint, imo. As far as losing cold air when opening an upright, who the F cares? How often do you open up a dedicated freezer, and for how long is it open? Give it a break. An upright is FAR superior to a chest freezer. NO contest.
After watching a bunch of worthless videos, I finally got to this one. Extremely helpful. Thank you for posting this!

Wow! That's incredible! Thank you for sharing that with us.
Yep, I can’t get rid of my Frigidaire chest. It’s been going for about 20 years. Never a problem.
That’s awesome. We’ve had a similar experience with Speed Queen washer/dryer. Too many appliances are not made with quality in mind.
It has been a year. Is your freezer still kicking? I know mine would’ve died the next day if I posted how long it lasted and how awesome it was. 😂
@@brandonsmith5673 Actually it just kicked the bucket in early January! It made it to 2023, it’s 30th year!

You are so welcome! We are glad to hear this video was helpful. Thank you for watching!
Me too! Me too! Exactly the info I need! Bravo 🎉 👍 ✅ 🤩. (However, I’m not excited or anything like that. 😏. 😉. )

Only video I've seen with salesperson inside of freezer, A+

Chest freezers are amazing for that reason alone!
Automatic defrost is extremely underrated. I have a upright freezer with self defrost and in 10 years have had no problem at all.
Really well done video, my friend. Just the info needed and communicated well.
Thank you!

Just bought a brand new whirlpool chest freezer last night. 16 cu ft. Was ready 2 hours after plugging it in.
Have to let it come to temperature empty first before filling it
Plug in, leave unopened 24 hours, pack to your hearts content, enjoy for 30 years.
I hate chest freezers. You can never find what you are looking for, without digging through all the food.
A fair point, thanks for sharing!
