All very true but I will put you right on something, Joe could bang, just like Mayweather did he had to adapt his style after a few breaks, particularly to his left hand, I believe? And so only used to hit “hard” when he was confident he would land it, he talks about adapting his style because of this in an interview I’ve seen on here(RUclips-but I can’t remember which one for the life of me?)👍🏼
I have to disagree with you. "While he was often not the best in the ring" Hopkins had 20 middleweight title defences and became the undisputed Middleweight Champion, he's an all time great. "Calzaghe never had heavy hands" not true, before his hand problems he had a lot of knockouts, he had to adapt to a less power higher volume style to try and avoid hand injuries. I'm sorry but you don't seem very knowledgeable on either fighters history.

Ehhh sorry it was a close fight bc Hopkins was cleaner with his shots and made Calzaghe miss with 70 percent of his shots. This is ring generalship and defense, two scoring fundamentals. I think Calzaghe won due to his making the fight but to say it wasn’t close is incorrect
So many casuals in these comments. You don't win fights landing 3 punches a round a holding on for dear life itself cos us ur getting out worked. Hope this helps 👍🏼
@@paulevans3754 ur the clown when a fighter boxer has certain advantages against you do other things to negate the boxers skills Hopkins lunged punched dropped him. Both worked hard but I thought Hopkins won🤷♂️
Joe is my sporting hero. Always has been. Always will be. I used to Box. I would've been terrified to meet him in the ring. He would have beat seven shades of shit out of me. (maybe) .He's so fast and his punches hurt when they land. Love the guy. He's my favourite boxer. Eh! Mr. Hopkinks. I respect you as a boxer also, but it wasn't a hugging contest.
I feel guys like Hopkins or Jones, while not in their primes, threw too many hooks and looping punches. Easier said than done with a confident Calzaghe, but I felt you needed to pound him to the body, arms and with straight punches upstairs. Calzaghe moved a lot and had great angles which make that tough. I just feel so many tried hooking him to the head. I think the biggest problem for opponents with Calzaghe is that he moves in forward so quickly with punches and his body. They always seem to react just after he moves in. If a fighter maybe controlled Calzaghe with the jab instead of trying to time him, I feel they'd have more success. Jab, straight punches, control him. Easier said than done though.
Joe was an awkward unconventional fighter with angles and agility coupled with superb stamina and heart that made it difficult for fighters to time him and wear him down.
@Nick Hopkins looked truly like a coward in there though, He was scared shitless because he knew Joe would take his soul if he didn't clinch after 1 punch lol. One of calzaghes worst fights but also one of Hopkins true cowardice shown.
Hopkins holding on for dear life. Lol. You can always tell when one fighter is better than another when you see that. He gave Joe that ultimate respect ALL…DAY….LONG…
This was a better fight than most acknowledged. It looked sloppy but you had a defensive master vs a younger come foreword fighter who would not allow himself to be shut out. Bernard made Calzaghe look sloppy and amateurish BUT Calzaghe said eff all and just kept trying to flurry. Most fighters just shut down when they miss Hopkins but to Joes credit he would not stop throwing and got the decision due to his will to win. I understand the split decision. If you judge on generalship Hopkins was cleaner sharper and looked more professional landing the harder shots but I had Calzaghe by a point bc he just kept hustling. Boxing purest can appreciate two chess players blocking each other’s strategy and see this as a good fight.
Check and Balance but Hopkins was feinting low blows last 3 or 4 rounds very unprofessional bit like a footballer taking a dive.yes Hopkins hit harder he was the heavier man.karma beat his rasict arse.great defensive fighter was Hopkins but gutter mouth.glad he lost and later knocked out the ring by Smith. Like Porter outhustled Garcia. Though their much younger and made a more interesting fight. Hopkins sold the fight well too as he always did. Got people panties in a bunch still, lol. I bet Puerto Ricans got over his flag antics by now.
Calzagher always had a great chin & d skills 2 implement his no retreat, no surrender game plan. This usually wears his opponents out. 2 great champions but calzagher clearly won on this particular night.
Hopkins was still a good fighter at this point and had more in the tank. He destroyed Kelly Pavlik AFTER this fight. Joe's stamina is the main reason he won, Bernard just couldn't keep up and had to resort to an exceptionally ugly and boring style. Not to mention the poor acting in Round 10 when he basically couldn't keep Joe off of him.
Brilliant editing Jeff :D :D - The TRUTH of this fight was.... Watch it from the 4th Round** onwards and Hopkins does not win a round. He landed two or maybe three punches a round. But thats because Calzaghe went looking for him.. all night. Its Calzaghes game, he will come at you and be willing to take a shot and land two, three four of his own ... The story of the fight. Hopkins was going backwards all night, his tactics were... throw a right, if it doesnt land.. wrap around. Calzaghe sucked the life out of him.. The five minute break for that "low blow"... FFS what a farce... Cortez was round the other side of the fighters. He never saw it, and it wasnt low.. But Hopkins was blowing out his arse at the time and he knew he was losing. The only reason it was a split decision... Adelaide "brown envelope" Bird

I mentioned to him that Hopkins was there and he quickly turned around and without hesitation raised his arm and called out "Champ"! I had no idea they knew each other. Hopkins sat with us for a bit and we talked about the Trinidad fight and I asked him specifically about this fight because I thought he got robbed. He said that the split in Calzaghe's way was most likely due to the knockdown and that he couldn't put him away so the judges just remembered a knockdown and a fighter who was not going away. Great guy. I sent my father the pic we took together. Didn't caption it. He replied... "What are you doing with that asshole. Great boxer".
@@ashb4275
Hopkins was not always the best boxer in the ring. What he lacked for in natural ability he made up for with ring smarts. Calzaghe had “heavy hands” perhaps in the UK. It’s hard to believe by the time he faced Lacey and Hopkins that he was capable of knocking anyone out. That is not to take anything away from him. He was incredibly entertaining and had incredible speed.
From the highlights it looks a lot closer. Joes best moments were missed out.
Or maybe Hopkins won

It’s mostly biased towards Hopkins, not showing most of his better moments. Note the large number of clinches and holding.
those slapping were in between the hard ones hahaha
actually slapping was an insult to bh
joe was slapping people because i think he used to break his hands
Gotta love the editing. Calzaghe beat Hopkins fair and square just like every fighter of his career. Never beaten. Not even a draw. An all time great!
Yet again, an easy win for Joe.

Anyone who thinks it's a close fight needs to watch the whole fight again, Hopkins made a clinch every opportunity he could to avoid getting hit by combinations and never had ring control.
Most of his flurry of slaps missed. You don't know shit.

Joe is my sporting hero. Always has been. Always will be. I used to Box. I would've been terrified to meet him in the ring. He would have beat seven shades of shit out of me. Never a fan of calzaghe but have to say, his endurance was epic.
Agreed, but Froch had even better endurance.
Agreed, but Froch had even better endurance.
Agreed, but Froch had even better endurance.
The best, never on counter punch always on front foot...with everybody he fought what a boxer legend, at anyweight the Goat
How is he a goat?
Raro el boxeo de Calzaghe pero ganador.... felicidades, campeón

Say what you want, but look at the guys Hopkins fought after the age of 40! That's impressive.
Kontol jancuk
Hopkins was still a good fighter at this point and had more in the tank. He destroyed Kelly Pavlik AFTER this fight. Joe's stamina is the main reason he won, Bernard just couldn't keep up and had to resort to an exceptionally ugly and boring style. Not to mention the poor acting in Round 10 when he basically couldn't keep Joe off of him.
Brilliant editing Jeff :D :D - The TRUTH of this fight was.... Watch it from the 4th Round** onwards and Hopkins does not win a round. He landed
two or maybe three punches a round. But thats because Calzaghe went looking for him.. all night. Its Calzaghes game, he will come at you
and be willing to take a shot and land two, three four of his own ... The story of the fight. Hopkins was going backwards all night, his tactics
were... throw a right, if it doesnt land.. wrap around. Calzaghe sucked the life out of him.. The five minute break for that "low blow"... FFS what
a farce... Cortez was round the other side of the fighters. He never saw it, and it wasnt low.. But Hopkins was blowing out his arse at the time
and he knew he was losing. The only reason it was a split decision... Adelaide "brown envelope" Bird

Split decision? Were the judges watching another fight 🤨🤷🏼♂️
I met Bernard at a cafe in Northern Liberties, Philly that he frequents. I was with my business' lawyer when Hopkins came in. You see, my father's favorite boxer then was Felix Trinidad. Hopkins ended him.
What a worthwhile story.ty
