I think Chris said to Joe,I'm going to take you where you have never been before, which he did as Joe said later that this was his hardest fight.I think this was the fight that gave Joe a boost in his self confidence the stepping stone up to the next level, because Eubank was no push over, beat this guy and you must realize you something special.
I think that because he primarily held the WBO title for so long the credit was never given to Joe. Most boxing fans recognise the big 3: WBC, WBA, IBF. Harsh judgement as Joe did get to the top in the big 3. A truly great fighter and world-level athlete with the heart of a warrior.
The WBO was as you say not sought after like the big 3. It’s suspicious Calzaghe stayed there. It’s not wrong to criticize him for that. It looks like he was hiding out there.
Remember how the press hyped up Jeff Lacy, like they with Gerald McLelland, as some kind of indestructible super monster ?! And Joe absolutely took his soul for 12 entire rounds !
Ottke and Collins retired rather than fight him, Hopkins avoided him until there was a much bigger pay day and he could use age as his excuse for losing
Joe was a brilliant boxer and when he had to mix it up he was one of the best .plus had a great chin .plus he was a smashing lad.had some great laughs when he came over to Tenerife .all my very best wishes Joe .Marco.
"Eubank landed some terrific body shots" says the commentator, after watching Chris throw three punches - one misses entirely, another hits Joe in the armpit and the third skims off his shoulder with barely any contact at all - 3:32
Always liked Chris Eubank and his personality :) A great fighter (elusive) and a gentleman that brought some flair to the proceedings. The only time he wasn't a gentleman, was if you faced him in the ring ..then, it was all business And the fact he has all his 'marbles' today, shows just how great an elusive fighter he was (considering he would get in close). So many punches, either avoided or skilfully slipped.
I watched Calzaghe as an amateur when he boxed my mates lad, You could see even as an amateur that he was a skilfull boxer.i wish people would give Boxers more respect regardless of if they like them or not, every boxer can,t fight every boxer in their prime, its a ridiculous arguement anyway, A Boxer can only fight the Boxers of his era, of course Eubank was in the twilight of his career but then you could say that about alot of Fights, Boxers should,nt be slagged off because of the year they were born.
This was during the time when the UK was the Super Middleweight legend of the world. No wonder the yanks would not fight. Eubank, Ben, Calzaghe and Collins. Fantastic fighters and great wars on the canvas.
One of the most underrated boxers ever. Also one of my favourite fighters of all time. His schoolings of Jeff Lacy and Roy Jones Jr were something special.
Joe is my man. He really is my sporting hero. Never defeated. Great fighter. A great boxer. I used to box but I was a couple of weights below him... I was never beat in the ring but I always used to think..."Thank fuck I don't have to fight Joe". There's no doubt he would have beat me senseless. One of the greats. I still watch his past fights with great admiration.
I had the great pleasure of meeting Joe and his dad a few years back in his gym doing a promotion the both of them true gentlemen and legends one of the all time greatest boxers
@Tony Thomas I know that Roy was not in his prime but Calazaghe still proved himself as a good boxer with that amazing record in all honesty Roy should have retired long before his 40s he could've easily been undefeated
@MudFlood Warrior2020 RJJ was KO'd by Tarver and Johnson ffs thats how faded he was. Johnson had been beaten by five guys easily beaten by a prime Jones
I watched that fight in Gran Canaria when I was 11 years old, I was rooting for Eubank and was gutted when he lost. 20 years old, Calzaghe is a legend and I appreciate his skill so much more than Eubank.
I still don't think Jo, to this day, is given the credit he deserves, especially by American's. One thing they often say is he couldn't punch...look at his knockout record and he floored the granite chinned Eubanks...twice. For me he had it all. He's as near to perfect as you can get.
Calzaghe made Lacy and Jones look like complete fools.. And Hopkins just held on for dear life.. How he adapted his style on the fly was a joy to watch.. True legend..
@@stevo62ful Yeah they were def past it. A win over "legends", "greats" are still good wins. However, I see your point - they don't count nearly as much.
Chris Davis : Highest level Calzaghe had fought at and he totally dominated Eubank. And that wasn’t even a peak Calzaghe - he was like a rookie here and he still schooled Eubank.
I know what your saying but Eubank was so far past his best and Calzaghe was hungry..... would of loved to see the fight with Eubank pre the Watson fight.... would of been awesome, but we can't have a time machine to make it happen.
Chris Davis : Eubank was only 31 at the time. I’d agree he was past his best, but he was still a formidable opponent anyone at that weight. Only opinions, but I think Calzaghe proved himself in the end to be a level above the rest - especially British SMWs.

Joe's up there with the best middle weights of the world . Great boxer and held his own. Masterclass Lacy.
Calzaghe, the greatest british boxer of all time!
One of the best not the best
James Hall 😂😂😂😂
scootdog mcginty Italian/Welsh more like
He's Welsh
scootdog mcginty - he beats froch. On points. Calzaghe was a level above.
Joe was unbelievable in all aspects most underrated boxer of all absolute animal
He thlipped
zigzagjoe69 he wath the protagonitht

Funny
Credit to Eubank for taking that knockdown straight on the chin, getting up, looking his opponent dead in the eyes and congratulating him.
Remember how the press hyped up Jeff Lacy, like they with Gerald McLelland, as some kind of indestructible super monster ?! And Joe absolutely took his soul for 12 entire rounds !
Eubank was a legend in his day... Was getting old when Calzaghe met him... Eubank was always good value..
He beat everyone they put in front of him, whether they we're past their best or not!
Ottke and Collins retired rather than fight him, Hopkins avoided him until there was a much bigger pay day and he could use age as his excuse for losing
Eubank was only 30 he was nowhere near past his prime
@@kevlarvesty1195 rubbish, eubank was well done by this point. Never understood why but maybe when he injured that other boxer it impacted him.
the greatest unsung boxing legend, never ducked a fight, never backed down,a proper pugilist.a hall of famer for sure.
Two sporting Gentlemen in the ring, fantastic!!
Joe was a brilliant boxer and when he had to mix it up he was one of the best .plus had a great chin .plus he was a smashing lad.had some great laughs when he came over to Tenerife .all my very best wishes Joe .Marco.
"Eubank landed some terrific body shots" says the commentator, after watching Chris throw three punches - one misses entirely, another hits Joe in the armpit and the third skims off his shoulder with barely any contact at all - 3:32
Tony England u ever get punched in the arm pit? It hurts worse that face
Both true legends great sportsmanship
Joe is the man he def is amazing too
Legend. No other words do him justice
Charlie sebbage Calzaghe was pretty good too 👍🏻
A true warrior with an undefeated record. Unbelievable amount of punches he could throw every round. His gas tank was inspiring.
Hopkins beat him
@@justthetruth1 you are dreaming, Jones won the first round and was then smoked.
Always liked Chris Eubank and his personality :)
A great fighter (elusive) and a gentleman that brought some flair to the proceedings.
The only time he wasn't a gentleman, was if you faced him in the ring ..then, it was all business
And the fact he has all his 'marbles' today, shows just how great an elusive fighter he was (considering he would get in close).
Good post.
The absolute best and most underrated boxing talent and credit to his father
Big love xx
This was during the time when the UK was the Super Middleweight legend of the world. No wonder the yanks would not fight. Eubank, Ben, Calzaghe and Collins. Fantastic fighters and great wars on the canvas.
One of my favourite fighters. Always gave his best .
Joe was great and God only knows what he could achieved without those fragile hands. A lot more KOs for a start.
it's always a pleasure seeing Calzaghe fighting.
What a fighter one of the most underrated champs ever
One of the most underrated boxers ever. Also one of my favourite fighters of all time. His schoolings of Jeff Lacy and Roy Jones Jr were something special.
Eubank was passed his best when they fort
He was 30 hardly past his best 😂
One of the best boxers ever and a 46-0 record
calzaghe was a top fighter
Joe is my man. He really is my sporting hero. Never defeated. Great fighter. A great boxer. I used to box but I was a couple of weights below him... I was never beat in the ring but I always used to think..."Thank fuck I don't have to fight Joe". There's no doubt he would have beat me senseless.
One of the greats. I still watch his past fights with great admiration.
I had the great pleasure of meeting Joe and his dad a few years back in his gym doing a promotion the both of them true gentlemen and legends one of the all time greatest boxers
being welsh followed him all over ..the best roy jones jnr at madison square gardens... what a weekend ..
He beat Roy Jones!
And had a record of 46-0
He's really underrated
@Tony Thomas I know that Roy was not in his prime but Calazaghe still proved himself as a good boxer with that amazing record in all honesty Roy should have retired long before his 40s he could've easily been undefeated
Paul Spadafora had a great record for awhile too... that didn’t end too well tho
@MudFlood Warrior2020 RJJ was KO'd by Tarver and Johnson ffs thats how faded he was. Johnson had been beaten by five guys easily beaten by a prime Jones
Jones , Eubanks was in the end 😃
I watched that fight in Gran Canaria when I was 11 years old, I was rooting for Eubank and was gutted when he lost. 20 years old, Calzaghe is a legend and I appreciate his skill so much more than Eubank.
I still don't think Jo, to this day, is given the credit he deserves, especially by American's. One thing they often say is he couldn't punch...look at his knockout record and he floored the granite chinned Eubanks...twice. For me he had it all. He's as near to perfect as you can get.
Calzaghe wasted a good part of his prime making defences if his lightly regarded WBO title against poor opposition.
I know boxing is mainly about punching but don't you think there have been boxers with better foot-work if you're looking for perfection?
Changed his style because of hand problems
Calzaghe made Lacy and Jones look like complete fools.. And Hopkins just held on for dear life.. How he adapted his style on the fly was a joy to watch.. True legend..
To be fair though... lacy? Does that count? Hopkins and Jones sure I can see someone saying those are good wins. But lacy? Not sold on that one
@@muffinbutton1484 Not even Hopkins and jones. they were past it
@@stevo62ful Yeah they were def past it. A win over "legends", "greats" are still good wins. However, I see your point - they don't count nearly as much.
Let’s be honest , like any sport you need luck and timing to succeed in any sport , but there’s no luck in boxing to finish undefeated !!
Joe threw so many punches, he was a phenomenon!
Calzaghe arguably the best British boxer, certainly in modern times. He is levels above Eubank here - in every department 🥊
Eubank was way past his best here though
I am not arguing really just saying I'd of liked to see eubank in his absolute prime mentally having this fight .....would of been a classic
One of 2 boxers I could never see getting beaten, great chin, best engine ever, and phenomenal speed, massively underrated fighter unfortunately! Up there with mayweather
genius fighter.
The rabbit punch master. Fought every one when they were over the hill.
Unfortunately we never got to see Calzaghe v Jones Jr during their prime.
Jones Jr. Big fish small pond.
@@intenttoinjure small pond full of Minnows. Roy fought alot of bums during his career.
@@clightning9703 Really? Jones in his prime fought much better competition. Plus he beat a young Hopkins convincingly, Calzaghe went life and death with a 43 year old Hopkins.
One of if not the best British boxers of all time. Americans will always say that Joe fought Roy Jones and others when they were old but so was Joe.
If Calzaghe was English he’d be regarded one of the best ever. The most underrated boxer of all time.
Well he was born in London.
Really stupid statement
@@mktf5582 being born in London doesn’t make him English, his family are Welsh/Italian and he grew up in South Wales👍
@@SaviolaIsGod Eh technically yes it does but at the end the day he is British so all Britons can celebrate his achievements.
Calzaghe the Pride of Wales. Very underrated and unappreciated.
Lacey "the guys a slapper" yeh slapped him all the way back to America😂
Hey we don't like Lacey here either
That was actually embarrassing for Lacy. I’d never seen such a one-side fight at world level till Fury vs Wilder.
Eubank was so gracious in defeat. That's a champion
'The first time I seen Joe Kawasaki' LOL
He never ran he beat everyone in front of him, broke his hand in the middle of a fight and still won, true legend
I rate Joe Calzaghe higher than Floyd Mayweather, very humble champion.Fan of Boxing From Kenya
nobody compares to money Mayweather.pple fail to give fyold coz of his behavior outside the risk but mayweather wud hav beat anybody in history
@@Gatheri1 Floyd is too small weight to fight greats like Joe Calzaghe or Roy Jones(see vid.Joe vs Roy Jones jnr) this guys fight in light heavy. Floyd is good in tapping the face of the opponent(small weight class)he doesn't Hurt guys(dismember opponent face)
Ali will always be the greatest boxer ever coz fighting people like George Foreman & Shaver's your literally one punch away from death(see.Ali vs Foreman)Big Boys
Floyd is a small scared man(140 pound weight class) who cannot walk alone to the supermarket without many bodyguards unlike Mohammed Ali a Big man Heavyweight @ (240 pounds)

Best work rate and stamina in the business. A nightmare to fight.
What a professional 👊
pickle rick
forgotten by lunch time when he retired.
Both were very exciting to watch. Calzaghe was the silent assassin, Eubank was the showman. Chris obviously is a good father too, his boys are testament to that👊🏻
RIP Sebastian 😔
He beat everyone put in front of him
So did Sven Ottke.
Except Hopkins.
What about the ppl put behind him?
We're still talking about Calzaghe here in ireland man earned his respect
If you want an indication of how good Calzaghe was, even at this stage in his career, consider the fact that he only fought Eubank because Steve Collins ducked him.
yes, Collins ducked him, Ottke ducked him, Hopkins ducked him too
I was there that night to see Paul ingle on the undercard joes record says it all a legend and had the chance to meet him at a Tony booth shaw in hull dead nice bloke as well
The best of his time. The USA don’t know what could’ve hit them
Eubank - so flamboyant they made him *plural* . Thoroughly outboxed
If Joe was English he'd be talked about as the best fighters from these shore's
What a load of bollocks, English need to stick up for their own more if anything.
He already is talked about as one of the best of all time, as is Lennox Lewis, you appear to be prejudiced about the English.
He was born in England!
I forgot Joe beat all the greats of his era, criminally underrated that guy.
joes hand speed...wow
Calzaghe, aka mr engine
Love old school fellas like this
