What I like best about Christopher Cross' voice is the control and restraint he's willing to use. He gives the perfect amount of volume and push with each syllable.
This concept of a young woman listening to famous songs for the first time and showing her reaction is monstrously creative. She is an incredible human being and this idea of hers is top shelf. Thank you. Very touching, even precious.

Christopher Cross's Sailing is a masterpiece and at the time was considered a big hit, he wrote this for his father that was an alcoholic telling him that he was going to make it. He is a great guitarist.
This was a favorite of mine in college. Lying on the couch listening to it over and over, which meant I had to keep going to the record player and repositioning the needle to this song. It really made me want to go sailing. With someone special.
So many of the 70s artists seemed to be hooked into a higher power of being that began and ended in the 1970s. I still believe it had a lot to do with the end of the Vietnam war. As the decade of the 70s rolled on, the further it got from the nightmare of Vietnam the music became more laid back and poets with guitars like Christopher Cross were everywhere! The lyrics actually meant something again without making you mad or too sad. A lot of the disco songs were a part of that. The goal was to try to forget what we went through for so many years and be happy and have fun for the first time since the 50s. Thank you President Nixon for stepping in to end JFK and LBJ's debacle.
I remember the very first time I heard this song and I was taken from the first orchestral intro. It was and still is the perfect song. It played on top forty radio for a year. I love watching people from your generation listen to music from ours for the first time. It's very emotional for me. You have no idea what you missed.
Ah, the memories from way back in the day of 1980 when this song came out and I was an 18 years old university freshman dude. I used to hear it every day on the radio and especially on a particular afternoon in mid September as I looked out my dorm room window laying down on the bed on my stomach hands under my chin thinking and missing my parents and a little home sick trying to get used to college life. Ill never forget that day and afternoon, this song is a masterpiece and memory grabber, this song is me till the day I"m no more, I"m 60 years old now. Thank you so much for sharing, your reaction truly authentic and I love that. The instrumentals are out of this world. He also sang, "Never be the same", youll love it too. Listen to it if you can. love and peace everyone.
In 1980 this song won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Arrangement of the Year, and helped Cross win the Best New Artist award. VH1 named "Sailing" the most "softsational soft rock" song of all time. The song was recorded in 1979, utilizing the 3M Digital Recording System, making it one of the first digitally recorded songs to chart.
I was listening to this with my Bose headphones on in 1980 - pregnant with my first child - this was the day before my due date. Your reactions continue to please me as you seem to enjoy these beautiful musical arrangements as I did when I was young. You seem to enjoy music like the taste of chocolate and it moves you about like wind chimes on a warm breeze. It's lovely to see. Having studied at U. T. Austin, Cross was a huge favorite on the campus when I was undergraduate there in the early 80s. This particular song, I'm told, was written about spending time on nearby Lake Travis where I also spend a number of days and nights and I am reminded of a beautiful girl I knew then. When Cross played a concert on campus the great Longhorn football player Earl Campbell introduced him. Longhorn pride was thick around those two men and several others at that time.
