I was a metal head when this album came out...it was my guilty pleasure...no one knew this was one of my favorite albums...there I said it....it’s still is an outstanding release....
I watched some interview, forget who, but he was a heavy metal rocker and he told Steve Perry (from a journey) that they ALL secretly admired Steve Perry’s voice …my point is, the same can likely be said about great voices, including Christopher Cross’s voice. 👍

Saw him live a couple of years ago and was blown away by how good his band was. I was lucky enough to be in the front row! Ride Like the Wind was incredible.
Saw him live as well and was pleasantly surprised at how good he sounded. Got to see him perform with the CO Symphony Orchestra (who also played with the other two on the bill: Peter Cetera and Kenny Loggins). Really great time!

Happy belated birthday, Christopher. This song holds many beautiful memories for me in my youth. This is the best one: One of my sisters in law had a brother. We'll call him Tom. I had met Tom many, many times but he barely said a word to me or anyone. He was PAINFULLY shy. So one day, my brother and sister in law (listed above) invited me to their beach house for the weekend. The only catch was that I had to pick up her brother Tom and bring him along for the three hour drive. I was not looking forward to a three hour trip with someone whom it would be a VERY awkward, uncomfortably quiet trip. I pick him up, and as soon as he gets in the car, he starts talking, laughing, etc. He finally came out of his shell and we both felt an immediate connection to each other. So we're in northern Maryland, and we head south for Ocean City, Maryland. Part of that trip takes us over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Once we paid the toll & started up the bridge, "Sailing" came on. It was a beautiful blue sky, about 75 degrees, and with Sailing blasting in the background, we reach the peak of the Bay Bridge. It was a spectacular view. Sailboats in the waters as far as the eye could see. And it was at this moment I had this warm, loving feeling come over me. I REALLY liked Tom & felt an almost immediate bond with him. It was such a great weekend. So Happy Birthday to you, Christopher Cross. The art you have created holds a special place in the hearts of millions of people, myself included. I saw him play in London pre-Covid and the band were super chilled. This song (and Arthur) was the reason I went to the gig, it was a bucket list tick off seeing him perform it live, I'd wanted to since I was travelling through the USA as a kid in 1980 in the car with my dad and it played constantly all summer. Xanadu by Olivia Newton John was the other big hit, I love them both.
Back in college, a good friend from high school met a friend of mine from music theory class. He liked her right away, so he made her a mix tape--and this was the first song on it (he loved to sail). She said later it was one of the things that made her fall in love with him. I played at their wedding some 30-odd years ago, and they're still married. :)

In early January 1981 I was coming home after 2 years from Scotland and Northern Ireland after a Latter Day Saint church mission as this great song come on the planes sound system on the head phones. We were flying in the back of a 747 flying along the Eastern sea board at night, the ocean was black and all the city lights all along it of AMERICA and HOME, until we landed in Washington. The plane was doing a gentle porpoising rocking gently. The words hit me hard as my anticipation was pretty high to get home " Its not far from Paradise, at least its not for me, for when the wind is right you can sail away... Sailing..." It was a perfect moment. Loved Christopher's music since.

In 1980 I lived in NYC.. I was tearing a wall down in my apartment. My friend Shawn, a carpenter was helping me. She said, "There's a song you need to hear. It reminds me of you.. Of course it was SAILING, I fell in love with it. I got to see Chris Cross w/Todd Rundgren and a bunch of other great musicians in my town a few years ago. They were touring together playing the Beatles White Album! And they each soloed some of their own stuff.. Of course we were all enraptured when Chris played Sailing. Btw, there are better cuts of this than this one. And dang, LISTEN TO LAURA NYRO playing with Labelle.
The first time I heard this song was on the radio in 1980. I was riding in the back of a Subaru in the middle of nowhere in central Utah with some mates when I was working on a mineral exploration crew in the oil and gas industry. The work was brutal and dangerous, but the money was good. It was early on a winter morning, the sun was just rising over the mountains, and we were driving from our hotel to the helicopter LZ to fly up into those mountains to do some hard-ass work all day. We were silent, just awed by the beauty of the landscape and this ethereal song we were all hearing for the first time on the radio. The people I was with were on loan to us from a different crew and this was their last day with our crew. The next day they returned to their crew up in North Dakota. The next thing I heard was that they all perished in a helicopter crash. This song is so beautiful and it also gives me such sad memories of those new friends who were all gone within a couple of days. I really do love this song. It holds a special place in my heart. Even though it has a prominent place on my playlist to this day, I want to thank you Jamel for playing it again and showing us how much you appreciate and love Christopher Cross. He is a monumental talent to be sure. An artist of great sensitivity.

Saw him on that same tour a few years ago. His vocals are as good today as they were back then.

In 1980 I lived in NYC.. I was tearing a wall down in my apartment. My friend Shawn, a carpenter was helping me. She said, "There's a song you need to hear. It reminds me of you.. Of course it was SAILING, I fell in love with it. I got to see Chris Cross w/Todd Rundgren and a bunch of other great musicians in my town a few years ago. They were touring together playing the Beatles White Album! And they each soloed some of their own stuff.. Of course we were all enraptured when Chris played Sailing. Btw, there are better cuts of this than this one. And dang, LISTEN TO LAURA NYRO playing with Labelle.

The first time I heard this song was on the radio in 1980. I was riding in the back of a Subaru in the middle of nowhere in central Utah with some mates when I was working on a mineral exploration crew in the oil and gas industry. The work was brutal and dangerous, but the money was good. It was early on a winter morning, the sun was just rising over the mountains, and we were driving from our hotel to the helicopter LZ to fly up into those mountains to do some hard-ass work all day. We were silent, just awed by the beauty of the landscape and this ethereal song we were all hearing for the first time on the radio. The people I was with were on loan to us from a different crew and this was their last day with our crew. The next day they returned to their crew up in North Dakota. The next thing I heard was that they all perished in a helicopter crash. This song is so beautiful and it also gives me such sad memories of those new friends who were all gone within a couple of days. I really do love this song. It holds a special place in my heart. Even though it has a prominent place on my playlist to this day, I want to thank you Jamel for playing it again and showing us how much you appreciate and love Christopher Cross. He is a monumental talent to be sure. An artist of great sensitivity.

A long time ago when I was a young sailor, I would go topside to a quite place near sunset, feel the ship as it rode the gentle swells and watch the the light make diamonds on the waves. It was dead quite. That’s what this song does to me.
