@@schubertuk The OP is referring to the commenters. The ones that constantly provide trivia. Nobody here used the word "most". Here's a common domino effect: reactors make a guess about a song being a theme for a movie, viewer goes to the song's wiki page to look up whether it is and what the name of the movie is, then also finds out that it won awards. This channel's videos have no shortage of such info drops in the comments no matter how old the song is. Heck, just look at the other top-voted posts under this video and you'll even get some behind-the-song details.

This song originated with a lyric Peter Allen wrote for a song he was working on with Carole Bayer Sager: "When you get caught between the moon and New York City." Allen and Bayer Sager were recording artists.
In 1981 Bayer Sager started working with another top songwriter, Burt Bacharach, who produced and composed songs for her solo album Sometimes Late at Night. When Bacharach got the gig scoring music for the movie Arthur, starring Dudley Moore, he worked on the music for the theme song with Christopher Cross, and asked Bayer Sager (now his romantic partner) to compose the lyrics. She recalled the line Allen came up with years earlier, and secured his permission to use it. For Allen, this was a very lucrative line, as it earned him a songwriting credit along with Bacharach, Bayer Sager and Cross.
How do you get "caught between the moon and New York City"? According to Peter Allen, he came up with the line when his plane got stuck in a holding pattern waiting to land at JFK airport in New York. In 2012, Songfacts heard from the flight attendant Susan Lina, who said, "Peter Allen was on my flight and when he was deplaning he said to me, 'You have inspired me to write a song, and you will know it when you hear it.' I believe this was the song, because we were in a holding pattern for JFK. I have been a flight attendant now for 34 years. This was back in the early '80s when I was only 21 or 22 years old. I did not know who he was until he was deplaning the aircraft. He was right, I did know the moment I heard the verse, when you get caught between the moon and New York City, because it was at night and we were in a holding pattern to land at JFK. I remember it so clearly."

He fell in love with auto racing and found it hard to resist. I think Formula 3. He was also overwhelmed with what they were trying to make him into (the next super star). To get an idea of how well regarded his talents were back then, research his producer, Michael Omartian and his time with Cross. That type of attention is hard for some people to accept. He is just a good old Texas raised boy. I knew him from back in the college days in central Texas area. He still lives just up the road.

I'll add my voice to those suggesting you react to the 1981 movie, "Arthur," and I'll add that this Christopher Cross song won the Academy Award that year for Best Original Song. Also winning an Oscar: Sir John Gielgud, for Best Supporting Actor. He plays the butler, and he's unforgettable, stealing every scene he's in. The man who plays Arthur, Dudley Moore, was nominated, and so was the screenplay. It's a great movie. Liza Minelli is terrific in it, and she doesn't even get to sing or dance!

Whew, took you guys a while to get to three reactions of Mr. Cross. But now, I think, you have a sense of what you're gonna get when you react to him. "Think of Laura" would be good for your next one, or possibly "All Right", "Never Be the Same", or "Say You'll Be Mine". If I had to put him in a specific genre, it would be "soft rock", also known as "yacht rock". And for no reason, I will throw out another great song about NYC - "The Boy From New York City" by Manhattan Transfer.

When you hear them again you can experience that space They literally filled that air with music that everyone heard together.

  • @Whitebrowpriest

This is such a classic song, and on the soundtrack of an even more classic film. You two should so react to the movie "Arthur" (1981), starring Dudley Moore, and Liza Minnelli, and Barney Martin (from Seinfeld). This is such a wonderful, and unconventional love story that is endearing and stays with you for good once you've seen it.
Liza Minnelli is the daughter of movie and stage legend, Judy Garland (aka "Dorothy" from the Wizard of Oz, 1939).
The late actor, Dudley Moore, was not only an actor, but a consummate concert pianist. It was so sad when he came down with an extremely rare neurological disease that impaired his ability to play the piano. In an interview I saw with him years ago (not sure, but I think it was Barbara Walters who interviewed him), he welled up with tears when he talked about how he could no longer play the piano anymore. It was one of the saddest things I've ever seen. I felt so sorry for him. He was such a nice, fun loving man, and it was sad to see him like that. :(

Great reaction to a wonderful artist, Christopher exploded on the music scene in the late 70s won a boat load of awards with his debut album, and has been recording ever since. If you can take a deep dive into his non radio hits, you would be amazed how really good this singer/songwriter is. A few that come to mind is Back of my mind, November, Nothing will change, Experiment. And for an added bonus. Check out the Austin based jazz band Freedonia. That has been his recent project. This type of music is either known as yacht rock or easy listening. "Ride like the Wind" is the Christopher Cross song to listen to. Christopher has real rock guitar chops even once substituting for Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple when Blackmore fell ill at a concert in 1970 when Cross was still a teen. It took him nearly 10 years after the DP concert to actually break it when his debut album won a Grammy in 1979 and then this song won the Oscar in 1981 so I'd say he did alright.
Again "Ride Like The Wind" is a must.
