One day in 1974 Christopher Cross traded in a Fender Stratocaster at a guitar shop toward the purchase of a Gibson Les Paul. One day later 20 year old Stevie Ray Vaughan bought that Strat that is now known as SRV's legendary scarred and battered "#1".

That song isn't about sailing at all. It's not even about artistic creatism. Christopher said it was about escaping an alcoholic father & being mentored by another man, who showed him what fatherly love & a good life could really feel like. Through that new father, Chris's canvas was wiped clean, a new masterpiece created, and the peace of childhood innocence re-experienced.
It was all metaphor & allegory and his personal testimony; a most sincerest form of poetry. ❤ And at age 53, childhood innocence & peace are something I still occasionally daydream about, growing up in a dysfunctional home myself.

Britt, the album was released December 10, 1979, the first single released in January 1980. Cross’s self-titled debut album was one of the biggest soft-rock hits of all time. The first single was “Ride Like The Wind,” which featured a memorable backup vocal by Doobie Brothers singer Michael McDonald and rose to #2 on the pop charts the following summer. “Sailing” was the follow-up single, and it rose even faster and higher, hitting #1 on this day in 1980. It also transformed Christopher Cross from a complete unknown to the biggest name in pop almost overnight, propelling him to a still-unmatched sweep at the 1981 Grammy Awards, where “Sailing” won Grammys for Best Record and Best Song, Christopher Cross won for Best Album and Cross himself won for Best New Artist. Cross would have another #1 pop hit later that year with “Arthur’s Theme (The Best That You Can Do),” co-written with Burt Bacharach and Carol Bayer Sager and winner of the 1982 Oscar for Best Song. But Cross’s next top-10 hit, “Think Of Laura” (1983), would be his last.

The whole album was good with one hit after another including "Sailing", "Ride Like The Wind", "Never Be The Same", "Say You'll Be Mine" etc. He won 4 Grammy Awards for it. He released a 2nd album in 1983 with a few hits on it. But sadly after that his fame declined. Success came quickly, all at once & then suddenly faded. Too bad as he was very talented.

This song was a MONSTER hit in 1979. It was probably played once an hour by pop radio stations that summer, fitting perfectly to the mood on a summer afternoon. This song is the epitome of "soft rock" of the 1970s and 1980s. The genre got the name "Yacht Rock" in the 21st century mainly due to this song, I think.

This is definitely one of my favorite songs of all time! Absolutely timeless! I really wished you would have reacted to the official video. Same vibe but the sound quality is better. Definitely take a look in your free time! Your reaction was so spot on! Nice to see people appreciate all the nuances! The definition of the yacht rock genre!

Just to give you an idea of what kind of impact this song had when released: It won the Grammy for Song of the Year and Record of the Year in 1980. It was huge. Ride Like The Wind and Arthur's Theme are both excellent as well.

The original album is green, his name above a nice circle in the middle and in it is a pink Flamingo... His follow up hits are a great vibe as well.... SAILING was a chill VIBE enjoyed sitting on the beach or a mountain, sea breeze or pine needles scent fill your nose... Heck, just chilling on your back porch on a great day... It begs to be listened to, it guarantees to elevate your senses!! Your imagination is off the hook, Gurl!! Luv your love of music! PEACE!!

It's one of my favorites songs of all time but the best thing about this performance is Christopher Cross wearing a Houston Oilers jersy like a total fucking boss.

I couldn't put my finger on it about you. And why i like your reactions. You are very perceptive and genuine. You have sense about music and people......an old soul coming back again in a younger human being. I Thank you for the truth that lights in your eyes as you explore the past of someones's yesterday journey. May you and yours always find love in your todays.........

In ‘79 I was 15 years old and sent away to live with a relative. There were no other kids in my new neighborhood, no cable TV, it was like being in solitary confinement everyday. All I had was my collection of vinyl…and maybe a little pot. This track on that album was my psychological escape.

Good song but if you want to enjoy a song about a sailor check out Jimmy Buffett - Son Of A Son Of A Sailor or Jimmy Buffett- Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes. Everytime I hear either one my memories are quickly back on the ship sailing the Pacific , Indian, and Atlantic Oceans. BrittReacts is doing an awesome job, never fails to put a smile on my face. For that, thanks.

There was no such rock music genre in the 70s and 80s and the term was created in 2005 by video producers and not music insiders.

He has a few other big hits too. "Think of Laura", "Arthur's Theme", "Swept Away", Never Be The Same", "Alright", +.
"Swept Away " is purely a live song. Fair warning.
    Have a great day!
