  • One of the key factors for me getting into an international watercolor show - womeninwatercolor.com - was using an effective underpainting. In this video I will talk about what is an underpainting, how to choose colors for an underpainting, underpainting tips for beginners, what is the purpose of an underpainting, and lots more beginner watercolor tips in addition to sharing my advanced experiments and insights about my watercolor underpaintings

Doing a commission of a cardinal and I will do two: one in winter and the other in spring. This really helped me solidify how to make them each glow in a different way. The winter one will not have yellow underneath I want to keep the tone somber and deep but for the spring one the yellow will be perfect especially since I wanted her to have a bright halo! Thank you so much for this tutorial and teaching us how to use these creative watercolor techniques!

I strive to see other than local colors, especially the greens. This was really helpful. We all must experiment more. Fortune favors the brave! In "Building Brilliant Watercolors", by Judy D. Treman, she uses various values of "disappearing" purple as underpaintings, mixing with alizarin crimson and ultramarine. One could use a more permanent red, though. Your technique of using multiple colors for animal underpaintings reminds me of the techniques used in "Painting Wildlife in Watercolor, by Peggy MacNamara. Light washes that are more focused on value rather than color and form the foundation of the paintings. She uses more layers and glazes, which I have a tendency to muddy up, due to my lack of patience. Your work is brighter and bolder.

I haven't heard of those books but I have seen watercolorists paint a purple or blue underpainting first. I've never tried that but it makes sense why it works! If you let layers dry in between application you're less likely to get mud I've found.

Underpainting scares me but not that I can buy Hippie Craft paper, I won't be so afraid of ruining paper and just enjoy experimenting. I also purchased Artisto watercolor paper which is good for practice too. It's student grade but I was impressed.

oops, I missed it LIVE but lots of good info about underpainting! I can see how scary it is to lay down some of those colors. I guess you have to keep reminding yourself that it dries lighter! I took an online portrait drawing class from Rebecca TY and am starting to use more faces in my work. Thanks for the useful information, Rachel!❤

Hi Rachel! I love the insight in this video, I have been experimenting with underpaintings recently too so excellent timing 😂.
I recently found a super helpful tool to go along with color experimentation and composition! I have been using the red “compose it grid” pretty religiously with all my paintings. When you are pushing the boundaries with color you can still get a realistic effect if you follow the same values as the original. The red film is super helpful to compare your values without getting distracted by the color differences. It is also really nice for grid tracing and composition. One of my favorite recent purchases!

I have used the red cellophane as a value tool for decades. Thanks for the info. My only problem it is it doesn't work as well for warm colors as cool.

I would probably recommend the $8 tier as it gives you access to most tutorials. Once you learn your way around you can then decide if you want to do higher levels.
